country to get the best view. if you're here in the bay area, and if you hear my voice, you probably are, you won't be left out. the places with special events planned for today's solar show. good morning to you on this monday, march 8th, kumasi did not go anywhere. >> i didn't go anywhere. i'm just going to enjoy the eclipse right here. and it's going to be fabulous because this is going to be cloudy in texas where she was supposed to be. >> you made the right call. >> yes, i checked this morning. i'm like, oh gosh. and i'm like, it's still cloudy. >> it's gonna look great here. it's also going to be a very warm day today. so outside this morning we have our mount tam cam. we have great visibility with clear skies up above. so let's talk about that eclipse. the eclipse will begin at 1014 this morning. the time of maximum eclipse for us. we'll see about a third of the sun obscured by the moon. that will occur at 1113 later on this morning. remember, don't look directly at the sun. you want those special sunglasses as then the partial eclipse will end right around 1215 later on. but we are going to have totally clear skies and a warm day on

the way today. temperatures right now though, we are starting out chilly. we're in the 40s right now, 46 in oakland. good morning. 42 in santa rosa, 47 in san mateo. we're down at 39, though, in livermore. hello, san francisco, look at your day today. get used to the sky conditions because we will stay sunny for much of the week ahead. sunrise here at 644 this morning. it's a warm afternoon. 60s and 70s widespread away from the coast and believe it or not, this is one of the coolest days we have on the seven day forecast. it just gets even warmer than that in the days ahead. reggie will show you that coming up in just a few minutes. >> drew, thank you. let's talk about that eclipse just hours away from it now, 15 states from texas to maine are in that path of totality. see, the rest of the country will see it in some form. more than 30 million people live in places where the sun will be 100% covered. millions of others have traveled to cities in the path so many people, in fact, local officials have issued emergency declarations in some places. many people have been planning

their trip for this eclipse since the last 1 in 2017. >> we've been talking about coming here for this event since what, three months before she was born? >> oh, nasa says the path of totality is slightly narrower than the originally predicted. >> there are also clouds, clouds in many parts of the path of totality, as we were just discussing, especially over texas, people in those areas may not be able to see the sun, but it will still get dark outside, so they'll get some of the show. if you're here in the bay area, the peak of the eclipse will block out 34% of the sun, and there will be viewing events across the bay area for people who want to experience it with others. >> the exploratorium in san francisco will be welcoming visitors for its eclipse party that starts at ten, then in berkeley, the lawrence hall of science is hosting a sold out event and then in oakland, chabot space and science center's party includes a pair of glasses, which you do need to view. the eclipse. that's where we find abc seven news reporter

lena howland this morning. good morning. lena >> good morning, kumasi and happy eclipse day to all of you back in the studio. now we are live here at the chabot space and science center, where they are preparing to hold a sold out solar eclipse viewing party. on their observation deck, kicking off at 10:00 this morning. now that's where they say they expect to have a stellar view of the sun as it passes through 34% totality over oakland. folks will also have the opportunity to watch the nasa live stream in their 20 inch telescope. rachel, across the bay in san francisco, exploratorium. visitors can watch the total eclipse broadcast from texas and mexico. although the bay area will see only a partial eclipse, you will still need safety glasses. that eyewear was going fast at the exploratorium store over the weekend. >> how many eclipse glasses have you sold? do you know? >> yeah, we've been selling for weeks now, about 100 a day. we're down to our very last stock. >> if you don't have safety

going on around the bay area in the country today we have you covered. our special coverage starts at 11 a.m. wherever you stream abc seven news. >> developing news now. the faa looking into a very scary incident for passengers on board a southwest flight out of denver. gloria. the plane's engine cover blew off during takeoff. good morning. >> reggie. yeah, the plane only made it to about 10,000ft before it had to turn around and make an immediate emergency landing. passengers were watching the whole time. in fact, they were the ones that alerted the flight crew since the pilots could not see it. 143 passengers were on board. nobody was hurt. one woman says she felt a jolt before looking out the window to see the metal cover peeling back. >> the flight attendant walked back, looked out my window and went, oh my god, were a lot of people who were really quite nervous. lots of don't take off your seat belts, hopefully they're going to get us on the ground. they must be turning around. >> and the faa has opened an

investigation and is also looking into two other southwest flights that experienced similar issues back in march. southwest is calling it a mechanical issue and says that their maintenance teams are reviewing the aircraft. and this comes after another issue with a southwest 737 aircraft last week, the plane had to abort takeoff in texas after the crew reported a possible engine fire. and we should note that while this did happen on a boeing plane, the engines are not made by boeing. kumasi. thank you gloria. >> tomorrow, crews will begin to work to stabilize a portion of highway one that collapsed near big sur. caltrans says the work will include installing vertical anchors under damaged under the damaged southbound lane. and in the meantime, convoys will continue to lead drivers through that damaged area along the northbound lane. over the past week, that lane has been widened to make it safer for drivers. it's still not clear when the road will be open to traffic.

big sur chamber of commerce says businesses there are losing an estimated $1 million every day that this road is closed, they may. merry, merry, merry >> san francisco supervisor aaron peskin is officially in the running to become the city's next mayor. the board president kicked off his mayoral campaign in an already competitive race over the weekend. peskin addressed a large crowd in portsmouth square in chinatown saturday. there's 213 days between now and the election, and i'm going to walk every corner, every neighborhood of this city and listen to voters talk about my plan. >> but this morning was incredibly heartening. uh- i mean, we've had probably 700 people here today, and it's we're off to a great start. >> he is running against incumbent mayor london breed supervisor ash-shafi'i levi strauss, heir daniel lurie, and former interim mayor mark farrell. keeping baseball in

oakland. that is a message behind the ballers. the new minor league team looks to fill its roster. spring tryouts were held over the weekend. it was just days after the a's announced they're headed to sacramento, before finally moving to las vegas. about 100 amateur and professional players converged on laney college, hoping to make the roster. ballers co-founder paul freeman believes the departure of the a's is a big opportunity for his new team. friedman says baseball plays a vital role in the community. >> oakland needs baseball. oakland is a baseball town. we love baseball in oakland, and baseball has brought the community of oakland together more than any other sport. >> other sports teams are looking to make the east bay a permanent home. the oakland roots and soul soccer teams hope to play at the coliseum in the near future. >> time now 509. it's all about a warm and sunny week ahead. we have clear skies out there this morning from our tam cam. it's all about that solar eclipse. today we will have that moon going in between the earth and

the sun later on this morning. so here's a look at the nationwide map and where we'll see that path of totality that really stretches from texas through the midwest, up in through new england. now back here on the west coast, we'll see about 34% of the sun obscured by the moon. and that is going to happen later on this morning. the maximum occurs at 1113. later on today. so we have total sunshine today. i mean, we have one of the best views across the entire country. we are totally cloud free. as you can see on the forecast, temperatures are warm into the 60s already before lunchtime and at that time of maximum eclipse for us at 11:13 a.m, you will have great viewing conditions. but again, you never want to look directly at the sun. you want to have those sunglasses on as we view that partial eclipse here locally. it's also a warm afternoon. get ready for above average temperatures near 70 in oakland today, 73 in concord, 65 in the city, a very pleasant 74. in santa rosa, 69 in palo alto, 72. the high in san jose. but

blocking or throttling internet traffic. but they were rescinded under former president donald trump. well, today, the fcc chairwoman will host a roundtable discussion with the santa clara county fire department, which had its internet access throttled during a wildfire in 2018. the fcc chairwoman is expected to speak about the agency's upcoming vote to restore the rules. she'll also be highlighting their importance to public safety and to first responders. yesterday, a key federal lawmaker unveiled a bipartisan proposal that would give consumers more rights to control how tech companies use their personal data. it would require companies to gather only as much information as they need to advertise specific products to consumers. the proposal is likely to face input from other lawmakers before it is formally introduced. >> brazil's attorney general is calling for social media regulations after elon musk threaten to disobey a court order banning certain accounts on x over the weekend. musk is now under investigation by the

country's supreme court. a justice has accused him of disinformation and obstruction of justice. this fight centers around free speech in brazil and what types of language are covered under their laws. x believes rules forcing them to ban certain accounts violates brazil's constitution. speaking of elon musk, his electric car company, tesla may be rolling out an autonomous taxi service this summer in a vague message on social media, musk simply writes tesla robotaxi unveil on eight over eight. musk has spoken about a robotaxi project for years. some analysts say it's a risky bet. competitors like cruise and waymo have both been testing self-driving cars on roads for years. >> a new poll reveals an uphill battle for a group of billionaires behind the plan to build a new city near fairfield. at a 400 solano county residents surveyed, about 70% said they would not back the california forever project. the plan includes a includes building a

community with homes for 400,000 people. a group against this development says the poll reflects the public mistrust of the builders. it needs voter approval before moving forward. california forever proponents say people have not heard enough yet about the project. but in the north bay, people living on boats anchored out in richardson bay near sausalito face eviction by october, according to our partners at the sf standard. it's all a part of a plan to relocate the group within the next two and a half years. conservationists claim the anchors of the small boat community damage elk grass. excuse me? eelgrass. and it's a sensitive and vital food source for migratory shorebirds. housing vouchers are being offered to residents on the bay, according to a new us news and world report. >> san jose ranked among the top five cities in the country for a high quality of living. the company compiled what residents considered satisfying in their daily lives. factors include

crime levels, quality of health care and education, plus average commute times and arbor, michigan takes the number one spot. the runner up is boulder, colorado. number three madison, wisconsin san jose at number four, followed by portland, maine. >> the dungeness crab season in the bay area. it got off to a late start and now it's going to be ending early. >> the season closes today. this is a move to protect whales and help prevent them from getting tangled in crab gear. the closure means commercial crab fishing season lasted less than three months. it officially opened january 18th in the bay after a number of delays, and those were to protect the whales as well. crab season usually opens in mid november. >> local scientists getting ready to share in the solar eclipse moment. physicists doctor desiree whitmore from san francisco's exploratorium is getting ready to watch the sun vanish for several minutes. she is an junction, texas, where she and her staff will broadcast live on the exploratorium's website and youtube channel.

texas is one of 13 states which will experience totality about four minutes of darkness. >> i just can't wait. it's going to get dark and cold and the light's going to be weird and i'm just going to be surrounded by amazing humans that are just as curious as i am. >> more eclipse enthusiasts from here in the bay area made their final travel to get to viewing hotspots, and gloria to tell us they don't mind driving thousands of miles to get that perfect view. >> they don't. reggie. some bay area residents have already hit the road in preparation for today's total solar eclipse, and we've talked to some who finally made it to their destination. now they are waiting to see the magic happen. mike oria of brentwood, says he's living out of his car for the event. oria has been driving across texas looking for the best spot to get a shot of the eclipse life as a professional photographer is not easy because of the fluid nature of chasing the weather. >> you really can't book any,

make any solid plans like that. so i have been, without a without running water or a toothbrush, since, early yesterday morning. >> concord's mike ziegler made his way to ohio. he says it's a once in a lifetime opportunity. >> so flew out of oakland, connected in chicago and then flew into cleveland and then drove from cleveland down. so it's about an hour and a half drive. >> and kris and leslie feiling of hayward have made it to austin. the couple experienced the 2017 solar eclipse in oregon, and they believe a moment like that this year with friends will be equally as special. >> it was just such a visually life changing moment that everybody else was sold on us. one having a vacation together and two, why not see the eclipse at the same time? >> and of course, we hope that they all get a good view of the eclipse, because we know in some areas the weather may not be the

we say maximum about 34% of the sun is going to be obscured by the moon. that occurs at exactly 1113. later on this morning. and then the partial eclipse will end at 1215. and we are going to have clear skies across the board. here's a look at the accuweather headlines that solar eclipse today that maximum at 1113 this morning. it's all about a warming trend. if you love sunshine you love warm weather. this is your week. it feels like spring out there and even by wednesday and thursday we're talking about 80s making a comeback away from the coast. so certainly above average for this time of the year. high pressure is building in. that means california is very quiet. we're not seeing much in the way of cloud cover across the state today. here's future weather at that time of maximum eclipse. we'll have temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s with that sunshine later on this afternoon, we warm very nicely a lot of 60s around the bay shoreline. our warmest areas inland getting into the 70s and even this evening. if you have any plans outside, it will feel pretty pleasant, with most of us

still in the 60s by 7 p.m, highs today will get you into the mid 60s to the mid 70s in most areas. the lone exception right along the immediate coastline. we will have a bit of a sea breeze. that ocean water temperature currently 56. that's going to keep half moon bay right around 59. but concord very nice at 7372. in san jose 71 the high in napa overnight tonight we keep those clear skies and temperatures in the mid 40s to the lower 50s heading into tuesday. now future tracker temperatures gets even warmer here on tuesday. more of us into the 70s. but watch what happens on wednesday. 80s start to appear inland and that continues even into thursday. so we have a pretty warm week ahead. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. enjoy the sunshine today. great viewing conditions for the eclipse. we just keep warming through the middle part of the week. by friday, temperatures begin to drop, but it's more back to reality over the weekend with dry conditions. saturday and sunday. guys >> thank you drew. coming up, the seven things to know this

texas to maine have a chance to see it in totality. however, the weather is threatening to block some of the best viewing. >> number two, remember, you need special glasses to view the eclipse so that you don't hurt your eyes. you can find out more about what to look for in the special events happening in the bay area today, and watch our live coverage at abc seven news.com. >> and number three, we have great weather to view that partial eclipse, that maximum will occur at 1113 later on this morning. and you could see with the day planner today we will have clear skies, temperatures, warm 60s and 70s for your daytime highs. >> number four, the faa is investigating this. an engine cover on a southwest plane blew off during takeoff yesterday. that plane was heading from denver to houston. it turned around. it landed safely. passengers were all put onto other planes. >> number five, you may get more choices when it comes to concert tickets. today, oakland assembly member buffy wicks plans to

detail her new bill that would end ticketmaster's exclusive control of ticket sales. wicks compares ticketmaster to a monopoly. she wants to lift restrictions on reselling and allow multiple companies to sell tickets, similar to the way airline ticket sales work. >> and number six, if you are driving this morning from tracy to dublin, it is a little slow there right now. it'll take you about 53 minutes. if you're going to san rafael to san francisco, 16 minutes and back to concord, 15 minutes. so that's moving pretty nicely right now. >> number seven, treasury secretary janet yellen is in china this morning. over the weekend she urged the chinese government not to give aid to russia. she also warned a flood of cheap items from the country is putting jobs and businesses around the world at risk. transit leaders in san mateo county are trying to cut off an alarming trend of bus drivers being attacked, sam trans says assaults on bus drivers more than tripled last year, compared

with 2022, only 14 in total, but still, that is 14 people and it's concerning enough that sam trans is making changes. last week, the board of the board of directors approved a new code that could ban people for life if they attack a driver. >> we want to make sure that we are communicating with our public what our expectations are so that we can mitigate or minimize any of these kinds of instances nationwide. >> the federal government says attacks on transit workers quadrupled since 2009, a milestone for the decades long project to relieve congestion on highway 101 at the novato narrows. >> starting thursday, traffic will be shifted to allow the next phase of construction to begin that means southbound traffic from olive avenue and san antonio road will be realigned off the temporary median lanes and onto the newly constructed roadway. northbound traffic will be shifted to those temporary lanes, so the old northbound lanes can be reconstructed, caltrans says the

exact timing of the shift and nighttime ramp closures will be announced in the coming days. the project is expected to be finished by summer of 2025. >> it has been more than three months now, but finally we have a powerball jackpot winner. a ticket sold in portland, oregon matched all six numbers, winning a whopping $1.3 billion jackpot. so if the person who won takes the cash option, it's worth around $621 million. this is the eighth largest prize in the game's history. the win came after a bit of drama with the powerball technical difficulties delayed the drawing for almost three hours. powerball says they needed more time to re verify tickets in one state. >> today's the day a total solar eclipse will make its way across the country and into the path of millions of americans. i'm christiane cordero with how people are preparing. >> bay bridge takeover next at

booked, highways are crowded, and some places have even issued a state of emergency ahead of this big event. abc news reporter christiane cordero has the story from washington. >> this morning. millions of americans are hoping for clear skies to experience their excitement in totality. >> i came down here for the eclipse. we're keeping our fingers crossed for the weather. i got the uh- certified safety eyewear. i got uv filters for my camera. >> the path of totality across the u.s. spans from southern texas to northern maine. along the way, a boom for local businesses between rental cars. >> we're fully booked right now. that's one things. so even if they call us, we don't have. >> and homes, according to airbnb, one out of four guests with a reservation has booked a stay along the path of totality. texas is among the most booked states. indianapolis the most booked city the increase in travel means extra traffic on the roads and in the skies. >> they even told us to maybe be prepared to sleep in our store

from the deck of the cargo ship that crashed into the francis scott key bridge last month. officials say removing these containers will allow them to access a piece of the bridge that now lies across the ship. now, the crew of the ship has been stuck there. this whole time, but this week's work could allow them to finally leave. the governor of maryland says fully reopening the channel, leading to the baltimore port by the end of may is a bit aggressive, but it's a realistic timeline. >> but we are going to do everything in our power to make sure we are bringing closure and comfort to these families to be able to reopen this channel, to be able to support our workers and support families who have been impacted by it, and also begin the process of the rebuild of the bridge. >> it was a vigil in baltimore over the weekend to honor the lives of the six workers who were killed when that bridge collapsed last month. divers are still trying to recover three of their bodies.

>> there was another incident involving a cargo ship over the weekend. gloria, this ship lost power and it's a very similar kind of phenomenon to what happened before the crash of baltimore. >> that's right. reggie, the ship lost power friday night as it was crossing through the new york harbor, and the coast guard is now confirming that it also has a loss of propulsion. tugboats escorted the ship through the waterway as crews managed to get the ship partially working again. authorities note that even if the ship had come close to the bridge, the design of the bridge would likely have prevented a major collision. >> it is a time to go out and rethink what you have, and make sure that all the inspections and all the uh- studies have been made for the individual bridges themselves. >> the incident serves as a reminder for bridge officials nationwide to be on alert. that ship was allowed to continue on its journey to norfolk, virginia, after getting repairs. kumasi. >> thank you. gloria. police in

the east bay are searching for a driver who crashed on the highway, killing a nine year old girl. the driver was heading north on interstate 680 in concord early yesterday morning. he veered off of the road and flipped over several times. chp says some of the passengers were not wearing seat belts. the force of this crash threw people from the car, and that nine year old died at the scene. four other women had to go to the hospital. investigators say the 30 year old man behind the wheel ran away after the crash. the chp is trying to figure out what caused this collision. you >> we are learning new details about a wild sideshow that shut down traffic on the bay bridge saturday. a i should say. early sunday morning. wanted to make sure we had that right. the chp

tells us about 100 cars, took part in the sideshow in the westbound lanes before treasure island crowds gathered to watch some. as you can see, setting off fireworks. witnesses say it lasted about 20 minutes. the chp says it towed two cars and detained four people. >> repairs begin today at a goodwill in pittsburg after a car crashed through the wall. look at this video. it left that gaping hole in the building. it happened yesterday morning on atlantic avenue. a goodwill rep tells abc seven the donation side of the building was damaged, but thankfully no one was hurt. the store stayed open. it's still accepting donations. no word yet on what led to the crash. the push for reparations for black for black californians is gaining traction, with lawmakers now considering a number of bills that would attempt to repair the harms of racism and anti-black policies in the state's black population is finding allyship in japanese americans who won redress after being locked up in concentration camps during world war two. >> there are many people who

midwest. chicago look at that. a lot of sunshine 71 degrees in the pacific northwest a little bit of rain. seattle coming in quite cooler at 52 degrees. it's all about that eclipse today, happening later on this morning. you look across the entire country, that path of totality where we'll have the moon completely obscuring the sun that will occur from texas through the midwest, up into new england later on this morning. for a lot of us in california, depending on where you are, northern california, anywhere from about 20 to 40% obscured, closer to 60% in san diego. here locally, this is what it will look like, the viewing conditions. i mean, we have great weather to see this eclipse. the maximum eclipse for us will occur at 1113 in the morning, and it will be about 34% of the sun obscured by the moon, and it will have a lot of sunshine. today it's a warm day, climbing through the 60s into the 70s. you can ask for better weather to see something in our sky highs. today we're going above average 69 in oakland, 65
