johns has the latest on the efforts to find and free that whale. >> for the second day in a row, the search for the entangled gray whale swimming off the coast of the peninsula continues . the whale, which was first spotted off the bay area tuesday morning, has its tail caught in gillnets. it's probably around a foot thick of gill net, just wrapped very tightly. >> we need some very strong tools that will help us cut through that and help to unwrap the lines. >> kathy george works with the marine mammal center and was on the team that went out to examine the whale tuesday. she says the whale was first seen off the coast of orange county late last month and was already entangled. george tells us some of the center's partner organizations have put a tracker and some buoys on the animal to keep an eye on it until it was safe to remove the gill net. but after the tracker stopped working, they didn't know where the whale was until it was spotted off the coast of pacifica tuesday, the marine mammal center tells me. scientists goals today is to find this whale and tag it once

again. that way, with bad weather expected in the coming days, they'll be able to continue monitoring it. as of wednesday afternoon, george says teams haven't been able to see the whale again, partly because of foggy weather along the coast. she tells us it's important to get the netting off sooner rather than later, though, as it could eventually be fatal for the whale. >> it could be a slow case of a secondary injury that results from that entangled point. it could be the whale's inability to feed. it could be its inability to get out of the way of other vessels. >> news of the whales entanglement has renewed discussion over the use of certain types of gill nets, and the effects they can have on animals. in a statement released tuesday, international advocacy group oceana called on california lawmakers to pass legislation that would do more to prevent these types of incidents. >> there are very nonselective gear type that have high rates of bycatch and bycatch mortality, and as well as wildlife entanglements. >> in the meantime, the marine mammal center is asking for the

public's assistance in finding the whale if they do see the whale, if they could report it to 877 s.o.s. whale or call channel 16 the us coast guard on your marine radio and stand by until train responders show up. >> that is the best way to help this whale in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> we'll keep tabs on that search, of course, but moving on. nothing short of magical. that's what legendary basketball coach tara vanderveer is calling her career at stanford. >> the 70 year old officially announced her retirement today. abc seven sports anchor chris alvarez is here with a look at a career and such an impact on so many people. >> yeah, it's exactly right. so many women over the years at stanford and men to all these fans that have watched over the years, the legend that tara vanderveer is, it's ending, at least at this part in bay area sports. tara vanderveer for 45 years of coaching, 38 of those at stanford calling it a career at age 70, she walks away as the winningest coach in college

basketball history. that's men's or women's 1216 victories and three national championships. >> my 38 years as the head coach of stanford university women's basketball team have been nothing short of magical. stanford is a beautiful place with incredible people. the strength of stanford is unwavering commitment to excellence. i'm proud of the championships we have won and how we have built a great tradition. what brings me the most satisfaction, however, is to see the transformation of the young women on our team, both on and off the court. how about kiki this season? off the court, young, unsure women become steady, confident leaders in the classroom. they have excelled and gone on to be doctors, lawyers, professors, business women and leaders. just walking into maples for practice and hearing the balls bouncing and the music playing has brought me great joy. coaching has never felt like a job. job and that's the definition of doing something you love.

analysis shows. oakland averages 279 stolen vehicles in just one week. >> another setback for street vendors in san francisco's mission district. they're now losing the storefront the city has been renting for them during the ban on vending that's been in place for months now. abc seven news reporter luz pena is joining us in the newsroom with reaction. louis, that's right. >> let's remember, the city implemented the street vending ban on mission street last year as a way to end what the city category as extremely dangerous fencing operations that were happening on the sidewalks throughout the day. that meant that vendors who did have permits were also prohibited from selling on mission street and the city. to help, that group rented a storefront, but now it's closing it. another change for the street vendors on mission street, this time, the city has decided to close down the tiangge store, where at least seven of them set up shop every day. >> we don't have any more surprises because we go through a lot of things, so right now

it's just another step. >> the city rented the storefront last year to offer vendors a place to sell indoors during the first street ban last year, the city extended the ban and the lease. >> the first allocation was around $100,000 for the first three months. that included operation costs, rent, anything and staffing. on a given day, you see 5 to 10 vendors in there . uh. the place has a capacity for 45 uh- they continue to say that sales are slow, because of the location of the president of the street vendors association said the site simply didn't work. >> so the tiangge was not the right approach. >> exactly. there was no the right thing for us, the city tried. they tried to do it marketing. they tried to do the best doing marketing, announced and everywhere. and it doesn't work. >> one of those vendors, manuel soltero, was not surprised by the city's decision. >> well, for me, it's the same close and no close, because i

port today, and it's not great news for most americans. inflation went up 3.5% in march. more than economists expected. prices increased 0.4% month over month. economists expected a 0.3% increase. the rate of increase is not as high as it was three years ago, but the news is fueling fears that the fed won't be able to slash interest rates this summer and the markets today reflected those fears. stocks fell across the board, with investors concerned that what looked like a blip in the battle to bring down inflation is more of a troubling trend. >> and one of the factors

driving those inflation numbers a rise in gas prices statewide. it's 539. in san francisco it's 565 cheaper in san jose at 550. abc seven news reporter ryan curry gets to the bottom of the rising gas costs. >> tick, tick, tick that meter keeps on rising. it's frustrating for drivers. >> what can you do? it's nothing you can do. >> it's over $6. i was like, man , it's a little bit too much right now. >> that's right. in some spots in the east bay, a gallon of gas is either $6 or close to it. fill ups are costing drivers a fortune. >> the whole tank cost me about 6570. so i mean, i'm just getting a quick fill up just to get back on the other side. >> so why are prices so high in the bay area? tom kloza, the head of energy analysis at the oil price information service, says there are two main reasons the first, local refineries are focusing more on maintenance than production. >> you've got refinery maintenance that's scheduled for chevron at richmond. you've got

refinery maintenance for chevron uh- at el segundo in the south, and you have refinery maintenance for pbf, which operates the martinez refinery. >> and the second reason, a recent change at the phillips 66 refinery, one of the refineries that was contributing about 50,000 barrels a day gasoline uh- is now no longer making gasoline. gas prices in california are up $0.50 just in the last month, while the rest of the country is only dealing with a 30 cent increase. and kloza says prices will keep going up in the next 40 days, but they should start to drop in the summer. however, he says if any refinery experiences any issue in the coming months, prices could rise again. if you have a problem with the refinery in benicia or or wilmington in the south or whatever, you could really have, some pretty severe issues for now. drivers say they will just have to budget accordingly. >> i've been seeing it slowly increase, but it's now it's a little bit too much. $6. it's

the environmental protection agency rolled out a national standard aimed at limiting so-called forever chemicals or pfas. >> as abc news reporter jacqueline lee explains, it will protect about 100 million people from exposure. >> in a major announcement wednesday, the environmental protection agency is providing a first ever national standard for the presence of so-called forever chemicals in drinking water, a move they say will protect about 100 million people. >> this rule really is a breakout from where we've been for decades. finally, we're seeing government start to take the pfas crisis seriously. >> commonly known as pfas, the epa is limiting six types of these substances the chemicals are commonly found in items like

fire extinguishing foam, food packaging and dental floss. since the chemicals break down very slowly, it can build up in people, animals and the environment over time and lead to an increase in cholesterol, changes in liver enzymes, and pregnancy complications, according to the cdc. >> we're starting with this six because with this six, we have the best, best science and data to design these health standards. so what epa is doing is we're measuring twice and we're cutting once. this is the first of six. and we're going to continue until we get to all of them. >> water systems will now have three years to monitor for these chemicals. and then two years to implement new technology to reduce their levels. according to the epa, $1 billion in funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law will help states with water testing and treatment. everyone should be able to turn on the tap and know that the glass of water they fill is safe to drink, and free of pollutants that harm people's health and well-being. the

american chemistry council released a statement last summer criticizing the plan, stating the epa analysis was flawed and under estimated the cost of compliance for water systems. the epa estimates between 6 and 10% of the 66,000 public drinking water systems will have to take action to meet the new drinking water standard. jacqueline lee, abc news, los angeles there's a push for lunchables and similar snack kits to be removed from school lunch programs after a consumer watchdog found the snacks contain relatively high levels of lead and sodium. >> consumer reports found sodium levels reaching up to 740mg per serving. that's more than a quarter of a child's daily recommended limit. lead was also found. researchers say none of the tested products exceeded federal limits, but nearly half would expose someone to 50% or more of california's limit, which is the most protective high standard in the u.s. >> san francisco is among the top cities for dog lovers. we love our dogs in the city, and

while you might think that every dog needs a home, we found that's not always true. >> as part of our efforts to build a better bay area, we are turning our attention to the homeless and their dogs and the care they both need. >> abc seven news reporter liam melendez is here with a somewhat controversial issue. >> yeah, but we do love our animals. we do. it is possible to care for both the unhoused and their animals because, you know, san francisco has had a free clinic for dogs whose owners are unhoused. they've had it for about 23 years. it started as outreach workers who were going out to treat people living on the streets, and they found that some of them had pets who also needed care. the city of oakland recently did a sweep of a homeless encampment, finding a few dogs living outside. it's a picture that may infuriate some animal lovers. so we asked ourselves, does every dog have to live under a roof to be considered well taken care

of? we approached the first unhoused person we ran into who had not one, but two dogs, their names baby girl and gypsy girl. what do you say to people who say you're not taking care of your dog properly because they're out on the street here? >> i tell them, like i give them their shots. i have food for them. you feel me? they're being loved. they're being taken care of the right way. so just because your house doesn't mean that you're better than me. >> like the pets of the homeless . provided that they had, veterinary care, were healthy, were well fed the title of my book comes from that. that realization, that book titled my dog always eats first homeless people and their animals, was written by researcher doctor leslie irvine. >> admittedly, she was once critical of homeless people owning dogs, but changed her mind after interviewing more than 70 homeless people across 40 cities, as well as social workers and veterinarians. how about the front dewclaws doctor ilana strubel of san francisco

is one of the vets she interviewed. today's clinic. >> we had 50 clients signed up, 50, and each one has a 1 to 2 pets. >> in 2001, struble began seeing pets who live with their homeless owners. today, through the program called vet sos. she sees their animals once a month for routine checkups in the spca parking lot. the program is run by the san francisco community clinic consortium. >> he's got something going on with this stomach, joseph baker adopted jillian after finishing a drug rehab program. there are people out there who don't take care of them. there are, but a good amount do take care of them. and, you know, and they are their children. >> precious and baby girl helped jamal thomas get through a rough time. >> i'm not sure if i would be here if i didn't have my dogs. that's how much they mean to me. how so, a few years back, when i got them, i was going through a

really hard time. and the love, the unconditional love that they have for you, you know, how much they appreciate every little thing. it just it shows you that there's reasons to keep going. >> every unhoused person we spoke to had the same outlook. kimchi came into sarah sandoval's life after a divorce, and struggling with homelessness. imagine life without kimchi, who, i don't know, i, i don't know where >> i really don't know where. she's everything to me. >> my family is in another state. i don't get to talk to them or see them often. and it's hard all the time to be just like around people, you know? so these are. these are my people. that's your family? this is my family? >> yeah. many of them take better care of their dogs than themselves. i've heard of you. seen that? >> we've seen that. the many are living unlimited funds. right. so they make choices. and a lot

of them, do, you know, purchase things, food for their pets, over their own own needs? many times, vet sos offers their homeless clients dog items, medications and pet food. >> on fridays back to shy brown. she says the people she encounters on the street have more empathy for her dogs than for most humans. are you surprised when people tend to treat your dogs better than they treat you, or anyone who is unhoused? >> i don't mind that. i don't, i don't because of the fact that they need just as much love as we do now. >> according to the author of that book, as a volunteer for the humane society, she came to realize that the animals who were brought in or surrendered came from perfectly solid homes and not from homeless people. now, people who take care of their animals on the streets say they are more social and usually better behaved. the dogs they are really? yeah, yeah. and usually, you know, i talked to

today. so target is adding new technology to try to stop theft as self checkout registers. it's called true scan cameras will be able to detect anything that has not been scanned. you'll get audio and visual messages if you don't scan items correctly. target says the technology will help them track people who repeatedly fail to scan their items, even after being prompted to do so. so some people say, hey, look, doesn't it seem like the stores are just spending extra money on this technology so that they don't have to spend money on on the humans? right. and then some people prefer going through the human checkout line. other people prefer the self checkout. so i'm just going to throw it out there. thoughts.

what do you prefer guys? chris i prefer the quickest. >> yeah, exactly. whatever that is. i will say though, i can't remember what store i was at, but i've seen in the self checkout line they had the cameras too, so that would also. hey, they're looking right at your face. yeah, the watchdog mentality there. so i'd rather have humans because then we're taking jobs away from people. so i'd rather have a whole laundry list of people checking us out, and that's just not the way it is anymore. unfortunately so i like to go on the human line. i want more humans. let's get rid of these machines. >> i'm totally with chris on that one. i like the human interaction, but if there's a long line waiting for the human checkout person, i'm going right over to self checkout. i'm the same. >> that's my second choice. go to the self checkout. i'll do it. if you have to wait a long time, it's much more fun to come up and see somebody and have i kind of look at how many items i have. >> if it's a lot, i'm going to the person because i'm tired. too slow. yeah, yeah. >> all right. i'll leave it to the professionals. right? yeah. a new survey reveals generation z is less happy than the rest of

us. a gallup and the walton family foundation poll found that gen zers ages 18 to 26, are less likely to rate their lives positively than older generations, when they were in the that age range. researchers say two factors are associated with gen z happiness they are the amount of sleep they get on weekends and a sense of purpose. a spencer maybe i'll start with you on this. i mean, i will say that those are two things you can control how much sleep you get, and you can find a sense of purpose if you really look. but what are your take on this? older generations seem happier. >> yeah, i'm not quite sure how to look at that. at the unhappiness, a lack of happiness among gen zers. i mean, one way of looking at it from my perspective is they have a longer life ahead of them than those of us in older generations , so why not feel positively about that? i'm not quite sure how to take that. >> chris, you're closer to that age group than any of us. what do you think? >> i think probably the unhappiness comes from social media, and some people, so many people compare themselves to whatever else is going on in

everybody else's lives. i think that's where a lot of people get in trouble, that's a good that can cause unhappiness if everyone else is on vacation. i'm not all of a sudden i'm sad. >> everybody is comparing themselves to and i don't know that older generations who didn't grow up with that social media do that to the extent that you do on social media. that's a good point. >> and they do face some existential crises right from the environment, climate and things like that. it just feels so big to them. and anyway, we've all faced that too, in our yeah, in our generation somehow, i don't know. i think it goes back to chris saying, you know, social media just makes it seem bigger. right? and more. yeah. all right. for the first time ever, gold medalist will be able to win prize money at the olympic games. the governing body of track and field will pay winners at the summer games in paris. $50,000 olympic medal winners. traditionally don't get prize money since the event originated as an amateur competition, the organization says. the money shows a commitment to empowering the athletes and recognizing the critical role they play in the success of the olympics. wait,

>> the first time i realized that i had a hearing loss. i didn't even remember it until a few years ago. i was at church and me and my group of classmates we were supposed to be doing some kind of singing. i remember looking at everybody else and everybody's singing, and i had this pamphlet in my hand. it's a little booklet. i look down and there's like different songs on it and stuff, and i was like, i don't even know where we are. i'm trying to like, you know, keep up with everybody. and i'm kind of giggling about it. but i'm also like, hiding my face because i didn't know what the heck was going on. my first grade teacher was like, she needs to take a

hearing test or she's going to stay back a grade. and they were like, okay, we'll do it. then when we went to take my hearing test and actually see an audiologist, they were like, what do you mean? she has a hearing loss? what and then that's when they found out it impacted their life in a big way. and, you know, they they really didn't know what to do. >> they said you had a profound deafness in one side, especially. it totally shocked us because there was nobody in our family that was deaf, on either side of our family. and we didn't really know anyone that was deaf. and plus they were kind of pitching. the school was pitching well. it's hard of hearing, which they didn't really consider deaf. i could see it was very stressful at times. you let your guard down and you were running to keep up, and that was so very
