>> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> happy thursday i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the extreme weather from the deep south to the northeast. >> millions are in the path of potential tornadoes and flooding. rain today. hours after the same storm wreaked havoc along the gulf coast, it looks like baghdad in oh four. >> this morning. >> parts of the south look like a war zone after a deadly storm system hit the gulf coast. >> big tornado, big, big tornado . >> this tornado slamming slidell, louisiana, near new orleans, leaving a trail of destruction. >> this has been a catastrophic event for the city of slidell. >> hundreds of homes and businesses damaged the roof of this apartment complex, ripped off authorities carrying out more than 50 rescues. >> we're alive. we're safe. that's all that matters. stuff is stuff. it can be replaced at this contracting company. >> employees rushing for cover as the tornado tore through the building. >> seven people were working in this building when the tornado hit. the group of them scrambled to a back room. twister comes through, blows it out top to bottom, bumps and bruises.

>> but remarkably, nobody hurt children of sergeant jake morris took cover in a bathtub as their father made rescues. air can come out bad enough. >> daddy wants to talk to you. >> out of the 14 years i've been doing this job, i haven't been that scared or nervous in new orleans. >> massive flooding, a month's worth of rain falling in just seven hours, inundating streets. come on, bro. in neighboring texas, horses at this farm rescued from flooded barns. and today the storms are moving into florida, georgia and the carolinas. another system is headed north towards kentucky and ohio. parts of central ohio seen here this week are still digging out from a tornado that killed three people last month. back in louisiana. no major injuries are reported in slidell. one death was confirmed in mississippi. we'll check your forecast in just a few moments. >> the other big story this morning, concerns about iran launching an attack on israel. it follows a recent airstrike that killed two iranian generals. president biden now speaking about this attack threat abc's christiane cordero

has the latest on this christiane good morning. >> ryan. and good morning. an attack by iran on israel or israeli interests now appears to be a matter of when not if. this morning, u.s. officials are warning israel of an imminent attack by iran in the coming days, possibly using drones and missiles to hit israel's regional assets. iran has vowed to retaliate for an airstrike last week at its consulate in syria, which killed two of its generals. israel has not admitted responsibility, but pentagon officials say israel was behind the airstrike. israel's defense minister is now threatening a powerful response if iran launches an attack. iran often uses middle east proxies like hezbollah to hit certain targets, but the wall street journal reports defense officials have warned this time iran could use its own military forces. president biden yesterday reiterated u.s. support for israel. >> as i told prime minister netanyahu, our commitment to israel's security against these threats from iran and its proxies is ironclad. let me say

it again ironclad. >> the show of support comes despite biden recently calling prime minister netanyahu's war strategy in gaza a mistake. an israeli airstrike yesterday killed three sons of a hamas political leader. hamas claims four of his grandchildren were also killed. meanwhile negotiations for a ceasefire deal may have hit another snag. hamas now says it does not have enough hostages in custody to meet the terms of the proposed deal, raising concern that more of the hostages may no longer be alive. before a cabinet meeting last night, prime minister netanyahu told israelis whoever hurts us or plans to hurt us, we will hurt them. andrew. >> christiane, thank you. on capitol hill, the house has blocked a bill that would reauthorize a national security surveillance program known as fisa. 19 republicans voted against advancing the measure, a blow to house speaker mike johnson. former president trump urged them to kill the bill, claiming it was used to spy on his campaign. fisa allows the government to conduct

warrantless wiretapping of non-americans outside the country. supporters say it's critical for disrupting terror attacks. it expires in eight days unless an agreement is reached. >> an arrest warrant has been issued for the nfl star charged in a chain reaction crash in texas. now the question is whether the super bowl champ could face prison time this morning. a star receiver for the kansas city chiefs faces multiple charges after this. six car crash. dallas police issuing an arrest warrant for rasheed rice. he's acknowledged racing down this highway in a lamborghini he'd rented alongside a corvette he owns, causing the chain reaction crash. both drivers and their passengers were seen in images obtained by tmz, appearing to leave the scene without checking if anyone was okay. kayla quinn says her vehicle was hit. her four year old son was in the back seat. >> the impact was crazy. we could have flew out. we could have got ejected out the windows. you know, my car could

have flipped over rice and the other driver now face six counts of collision with bodily injury, one count of collision with serious bodily injury and one count of aggravated assault, a charge punishable by up to 20 years in prison. >> police say they also found marijuana in both cars and found a playbook for the chiefs. a diamond necklace and a check for $16,000. in a statement last week, rice said i take full responsibility for my part in this matter and will continue to cooperate with the necessary authorities. rice and the other driver were given 24 hours to surrender on the charges, but a local expert says it's unlikely rice will spend time behind bars because the injuries were not serious. and he has promised to compensate the victims new fallout after the shooting of a first grade teacher in virginia by one of her students, abby zwirner was shot at her school in newport news last year despite warning school officials about the boy's behavior. >> now, a grand jury has charged the school's former assistant principal, doctor ebony parker, with felony child abuse for

allegedly ignoring warnings about the boy. the grand jury also detailed security issues at the school, including missing doors and security buzzers that did not work so far, no public comment from parker about those charges. >> republican lawmakers in arizona have blocked an effort to repeal a law that bans nearly all abortions in the state. they say they want to hear from voters first. former president trump says the arizona court ruling, which revived a law that dates back to 1864, goes too far. but in a statement overnight, trump continued to take credit for the overturning of roe v wade. >> people forget fighting roe v wade was right from the beginning all about bringing the issue back to the states pursuant to the 10th amendment and states rights, the states will be making the decision. republicans are now free to run for office based on the horrible border inflation, the bad economy, the death and destruction of our country. >> trump says if reelected, he will not sign a national

abortion ban. >> new sonar images show parts of baltimore's key bridge under about 50ft of water. despite the wreckage from last month's collapse, officials say the city's port should be fully operational by the end of may. investigators are trying to figure out why a cargo ship lost power before slamming into the bridge. they're focusing on the ship's electrical system and circuit breakers. >> another special achievement for college basketball star caitlin clark. the university of iowa is now retiring. her number 22 jersey, which is a rare honor . clark is expected to be chosen first by the indiana fever in next week's wnba draft. as a result of that, 36 of the fever's 40 games next season will be on national television, one of the greatest to lace them up. >> all right, time now for your thursday weather. good >> we have another threat for severe weather today, including the risk for isolated tornadoes, hail, and even some damaging winds on the i-95 corridor from virginia to northern florida.

>> we're back with this wild car chase in provo, utah. police tried to stop the car, but the driver took off before flipping several times, hitting that house there and landing on other cars. two people escaped. the video is part of the police investigation. >> wall street gets another read on inflation today with a new report on wholesale prices. the labor department yesterday reported overall inflation was up 3.5% in march. that is compared to a year ago due to higher prices for rent, car insurance, clothes and even gas. one chicago store owner says her rent jumped from $1,400 a month to 1800. >> i have to do a sale. i have to bring people in just so i can be able to deal with what is, you know, the inevitable of my rent being $400 more than it was. >> experts say the worse than expected news on inflation yesterday means we likely won't see an interest rate cut from the federal reserve until september. that's at the earliest. >> now to florida and the growing mystery in the water. what's causing so many rare fish

to die? scientists have been trying to figure out why so many small toothed sawfish are dying in south florida, 38 sawfish have washed ashore in the florida keys this year. six in the last week. >> they don't know what's going on, they're they're testing them like crazy right now, trying to figure it out. >> the smalltooth sawfish are a critically endangered species. experts say the recent deaths could have a major impact on the species recovery. and it's not just sawfish. since last fall, more than 70 species have been observed from key west to palm beach, spinning and whirling in what wildlife officials call an abnormal fish behavior event. >> some sort of neurotoxin biological behavior where they're beating themselves in the shallows and swimming in circles. >> researchers are now taking samples from healthy fish and comparing them to samples from the fish that have died. so far, no bacterial infections have been detected and no signs that the water is to blame. >> an 85 year old woman is being praised for her bravery after fatally shooting an armed intruder who had handcuffed her

to a chair, police say the gunman broke into her home in blackfoot, idaho, in the middle of the night while he was searching for valuables. she managed to drag the chair to her bedroom. she grabbed her 357 magnum from under her pillow, and then she moved back to the spot where he left her. she opened fire. when he came back, police say the 39 year old suspect returned fire before he died, shooting the woman multiple times. her son found her ten hours later, but she survived. >> all right. coming up, the gambling scandal in baseball, a reported plea deal now in the works. >> also ahead, why? prosecutors say the alleged doomsday cult leader, chad daybell, killed his wife's children and his ex, labeling them as zombies

target, home depot, and even lowe's to be resold online, part of a trend in retail crime. four people are under arrest trial for chad daybell, the alleged doomsday cult leader accused of murdering his ex-wife and his second wife's children is now underway in idaho. >> an opening statements. prosecutors claim the murders were fueled by sex, money and power. here's abc's andrea fujii . >> dramatic opening statements in the triple murder trial of chad daybell. prosecutors claiming daybell did not let anything stand in his way. >> his desire for sex, money and power led him to pursue those ambitions. and this pursuit led to the deaths of his wife and lori's julius and children. >> daybell is accused of murdering his first wife, tammy daybell, in 2019. he's also charged in the deaths of 16 year old tylee ryan and seven year old jj vallow, the children of lori vallow, whom he married less than three weeks after his first wife's death. daybell wrote several books about

doomsday events. he met vallow at a religious conference in 2018. prosecutors say the two began sharing apocalyptic beliefs and labeled anyone who stood in their way as dark spirits or zombies. >> this narrative gave them the pretext to remove people from this world for their own good. >> when vallow's children were reported missing in 2019, chad and lori were found in hawaii, appearing to enjoy themselves. daybell has pleaded not guilty. his attorney insists there is no way to determine how tammy daybell died, and claims lori vallow manipulated chad into having an extramarital affair. >> lori vallow comes up and she starts getting a lot of tension, and she pursued him and she encouraged him. >> and the defense argues it was lori vallow's brother, alex cox, who killed the two children. cox died in 2019. >> whenever there was a problem or a threat to lori vallow. you'll hear testimony that alex cox came to the rescue. >> chad daybell's trial is

expected to last nine weeks. prosecutors want the death penalty. lori vallow is already serving life in prison for killing her two kids and conspiring to kill tammy daybell . rhiannon. andrew. >> andrea. thank you. in sports, the former interpreter for dodgers star shohei ohtani is reportedly in talks to plead guilty to possible federal charges, the new york times reports. there is evidence ep mizuhara may have stolen more than $4.5 million from ohtani to cover his gambling debts, allegedly changing the settings on ohtani's bank account so that ohtani would not get alerts about the transactions. >> and a first at the olympics this summer in paris, track and field will be the first sport to award prize money. the sport's governing body will pay gold medal winners $50,000 each. relay teams will split the cash. speaking of paris, a new world record in rope climbing, a french woman climbed to the second floor of the eiffel tower, 360ft, by the way, in just 18 minutes. >> and she did it to raise money
