. plus, today is for 20. no celebration, though at hippie hill here in san francisco this year. instead a sports tournament being planned, then the end of an era. the last ride for bart's legacy trains. good morning everybody. it's saturday, april 20th. i'm stephanie sierra. lisa is here with a look at the forecast and it's looking nice out there. yeah, it certainly is. >> we get a nice dry weekend and a warmer one. in fact, we are getting into a warming trend for the next few days. here's a look at live doppler seven where you notice some patchy fog. but overall things are brightening up from our sutro tower camera. look how pretty that is. temperatures from the low 50s downtown, mid 50s in oakland, 57 in san jose and from vollmer peak. still a bit of a marine layer there. 58 in concord, 55 in livermore, and finally emeryville. our last stop there, the sea breeze kicks up today, but that's not going to keep the temperatures up from climbing in our inland valleys, upper 70s to near 80, low to mid 70s around the bay shore and then breezy winds around 60 at the coast.

but we'll even warm up tomorrow for the warmest day of the workweek. for most of you on sunday. details on that in a few minutes. stephanie lisa. >> thank you. we're following breaking news in the east bay. a third alarm fire is being reported at the intersection of 40th avenue and san leandro street in oakland. oakland fire live posted the alert earlier this morning on x. it's unclear how this fire started or if firefighters have contained it at this time. we will, of course, keep you updated as we learn more right here on abc seven and online at abc seven news.com. now to new developments on a deadly shooting in pleasant hill last month. two men from richmond are now under arrest. the shooting happened within twin bridge circle on march 19th. investigators say that's when two people tried to steal from a delivery driver on his way home. that led to a shootout between them all, leaving the driver and another suspect dead. a celebration of life was held for mario gonzalez. it was three

years ago. he died after officers pinned him to the ground, face down for several minutes. his family is now sharing their reaction to the district attorney's office deciding to charge three officers with involuntary manslaughter. abc seven news reporter tara campbell was at last night's gathering, a celebration friday of the life of mario gonzalez and the criminal charges filed against alameda police officers in his death. >> exactly three years ago. >> my, you know, like my son, they died right here in this park. >> mario's mother speaking one day after alameda county district attorney pamela price announced the results of a new investigation, eric mckinley, james fisher and cameron leahey lahey have each been charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter, price pledging to reexamine the case when she first took office, reversing the decision of her predecessor, nancy o'malley, who cleared the officers of any criminal wrongdoing. >> you know, it's not easy, but i expected the best, all the times, you know, i keep praying,

praying, praying, praying. and, you know, god is good. >> price is public accountability unit concluding mario gonzales died of asphyxiation in a departure from the initial report pointing to toxic effects of methamphetamine and morbid obesity, among the causes of his death, mario's brother, jerry gonzalez, says his sights are now set on a conviction. wanting justice not only for mario but also the seven year old son he left behind, the three men, each facing up to four years in state prison. does it feel like justice if they are convicted? >> yeah. it'll be. it's definitely a major win and stepping into the right direction. we're going to continue advocating for this. >> you know, amanda michael blanco works for a restorative justice nonprofit. her brother, eric salgado, was shot and killed by california highway patrol officers in 2020. the officers were never charged. my hope for this evening is that one we're in community that we don't lose sight from this fight, because this is just the beginning. >> and mario's mother plans on

doing exactly that, continuing the fight. >> nobody can can give me my son back. you know, my son, he already gone. yeah, unfortunately. you know, like my son. you know, like he's not here no more. but i'm here. i'm still, you know, fighting for him. >> tara campbell, abc seven news in the north bay, the sausalito pier is temporarily closed, suspending ferry service to the city, an issue which needs immediate attention was discovered during a routine inspection as a precaution, the pier will be closed to golden gate ferry service until those repairs can be made. >> the replacement golden gate transit bus service is available. there's no estimate on when it will reopen. another heads up for travelers in the north bay this weekend. as of last night, westbound lanes of highway 37 will be closed from vallejo to sears point in sonoma county for roadway repair. that closure will last until early monday morning. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at the impact. it's going

to be a mess, but that's what you can't avoid it. >> drivers in american canyon are bracing for a big construction project, which will shut down portions of highway 37 over the next four weekends. >> even before the construction. 37 has always been a problem because 37 has a lot of, a lot of, potholes. >> part of the process is we're going to be grinding and repaving. >> caltrans says a 21 mile stretch of 37 from solano to sonoma counties is getting new asphalt. they say it's a challenging job on a two lane road. having a 55 hour closure allows our crews to stage safely . >> we be able to work on, like you said, that limited space and maneuver. so, it's very beneficial for us to be able to do so. and that is the limitation this weekend. >> the closure from 9 p.m. friday to 5 a.m. monday will impact westbound lanes of 37 from vallejo to sears point. caltrans suggests detours through wine country. >> it is going to be a long

detour, so please plan ahead with plenty of time. >> ramsgate winery in the sonoma valley posting this message to visitors on its instagram page about the 37 construction. >> you do not want to miss the sonoma speed tour. april 19th through the 21st sonoma raceway hosting this muscle car event over the weekend, ticket holders have been notified about possible delays getting here. >> you're going to have a detour. why not let it be through wine country to get here, but you know, it's still easy to access the track. there's still an easy way to get here. >> the repaving project, the first step in reimagining highway 37, which has seen roadway flooding and closures in recent years. a long time project calls for widening and elevating the highway. but for now, drivers are being asked to be patient. >> we asked the public to plan ahead as best as possible. please look at maps and traffic applications in sonoma county. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> looking ahead now to the most significant legal case on homelessness in decades. that's

now headed to the supreme court next week. on monday, the court will hear arguments on whether or not people can be punished just for sleeping outdoors. we followed this case for months now. the town of grants pass, oregon, is suing for the right to ticket people who sleep on the streets when they have no other shelter to go to. appeals courts have said that's cruel and unusual punishment. governor gavin newsom and san francisco mayor london breed are among the california leaders, asking the supreme court to give them more freedom to clear encampments. it's advocates like jennifer friedenbach say sweeps won't solve the problem. >> we don't want to see cities, using police and uh, using criminalization and jail as a way to punish homeless people for being homeless. >> the supreme court's decision is expected by the end of june. a big change is coming to the annual 420 celebration at golden gate park. today. the san francisco rec and parks department is holding a field

day with volleyball and kickball tournaments, instead of the usual hippie hill event. it was canceled because of financial constraints, but it's likely people who still want to celebrate cannabis culture will be in the park in anticipation of crowds. the psychedelic church of ambrosia is teaming up with nonprofits to send safety staff portable toilets and a medical tent to the park, and there will be some nice weather for it. let's check in with lisa. >> yeah, it's getting nice out the skies are clearing and the view from emeryville shows a lot of sunshine, but you can see the compacted marine layer there, sea breeze keeping it breezy by the bay and certainly at the coast. so the big warm up comes for the second half of the weekend. i'll explain. >> coming up. lisa thank you. also ahead, a rare saturday vote happening in the house today, the controversial bill that could jeopardize speaker mike johnson'

developing news in the middle east at least ten people were killed in israeli airstrikes in rafah overnight. that's according to al jazeera. this comes as more than 3400 people have been killed in gaza since the war started back in october, according to the hamas run health ministry in the west bank. at least five people have

been killed as the idf raids a refugee camp there. this appears to be one of the largest operations in this area since the war started. israeli military officials say soldiers eliminated terrorists, arrested a number of wanted people and have uncovered explosives during this operation. the house of representatives is expected to vote today on a $95 billion foreign aid bill to israel, ukraine and taiwan. the bill provides $26 billion for israel and $61 billion for ukraine. and $8 billion for indo pacific allies. it includes a potential ban of tiktok but does not include tougher border security measures. that's because speaker mike johnson needed to rely on democrats to advance the bill. after dozens of republicans voted against it. back here at home, several cities have been added to the state's pro housing designation. governor gavin newsom announced this week that berkeley, pinole, richmond and fairfield are joining 42 other

cities honored for their efforts to encourage more housing development. the list includes a total of bay area cities. the designation comes with financial incentives and other resources to helspeed housing a major housing shortage and has set a goal for 2.5 million new homes by year 2030. watch where you park in san francisco. the city is preparing to crack down on illegal parking and issue more tickets. sfmta's director says cities parking enforcement officers will finally be able to start enforcing all the parking rules after being short staffed following the pandemic. abc seven news spoke with the transportation advocate, who said this approach is key for public safety, but not everyone agrees. >> we know that people who park on sidewalks or in bike lanes or in crosswalks or really close to intersections reduce safety for all people, but especially for children and seniors. people

with disabilities who walk, bike or use mobility devices to get around. >> well, the whole city is trying to get more money because of the deficit. the budget deficit. >> sfmta anticipates a $12.7 million budget deficit during this fiscal year, and next. another transit news today will be the last run for bart's legacy trains. the cars that have been running since bart first opened to its passengers back in 1972. the transit agency is holding a celebration at macarthur station in oakland with food, activities as well as a bart merchandise pop up. that event starts at 1:00. this marks the end of the transition to bart's so-called fleet of the future. those more modern cars you may have seen have now fully been phased in. there's more than 700 of them. as for the legacy cars, at least three of them are headed to a museum. a museum that is in suisun city to weather now. and yes, we can say

he called it proximal femoral focal deficiency. dr. cho: in gianna's case, she had a leg that was essentially non-functional below the knee. and although she could have been able to do some things with that non-functional leg, she would not be able to do as much as if she got an amputation and was fitted with a prosthesis. and so that type of decision isn't taken lightly. but we are fortunate that we take care of so many kids with this condition. sean: fortunately, our ob-gyn, her husband, was an orthopedist, and he was actually friends with the chief of staff at shriners in los angeles. and so very quickly, he had us on the phone with an orthopedic, just explaining to us what condition this was, what type of life we could expect. devon: she was born, and she was perfect, and it was so calm and peaceful in that moment.

and i think having sophia already and her having a big sister. life just-- okay, let's go. she was about three months old. we had our first visit at a clinic at shriners. and the beauty of it is we could see another kid that was, maybe, a year old, and we can see a three-year old, we can see a five-year old and seven and nine. we see these other kids that are there, and they're smiling and they're laughing, and they're with their families. and i can visualize what my child was going to be and how she was going to be. that was why we chose shriners. we knew it wasn't just a surgery that was gonna be completed, and we were on our own. we had a community. there was physical therapists, there were people to help us with services in our community.

it was the doctors, it was... the processes, it was a community of people and families that we knew that this was the place that we could be with her for long term. i remember just driving up to shriners and always going through those doors and feeling so welcome, and the people there would just so patient with me and so open to trying to give me the best possible leg. and i know as a child, i've been difficult in some point, in some scenarios, and they've just always made me feel worthy of being there and feel like i could do anything. devon: gianna was always pushing the boundaries, always pushing how far she can climb up a tree, how fast she can go, you know, she just would always push herself. to keep up with her sister, keep up with the kids in the neighborhood,

and go, go, go, go. [cheering] gianna: and so i went out and tried sports. i played soccer, softball. i did fencing for a little bit. i did tennis when i was younger, i did swimming. sean: i think what makes me most proud of her is just how she's grown up, how she perseveres, how she gets up every day and gets out of bed, puts on her leg. i have to understand that's-- no day is easy for her. um, but she always has a great attitude about just getting up and going. gianna: when i think about the legacy i leave behind, i want to be person that people look towards for encouragement and inspiration. i want to be the person that shows strength and vulnerability and honesty. i wanna show kids just like me that...
