headache is coming back next on abc7 news at 11. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> right away. we begin tonight with that scary situation at a church in san francisco. someone stabbed a parishioner outside after interrupting sunday service. good evening. i'm dion lim. that attack happened outside saint peter and paul catholic church in north beach just before 1 p.m. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone talked to church leaders who say it's part of a bigger problem. >> yellow crime scene, tape flapping in the breeze outside of not only one of san francisco's most well known churches, but a spot where witnesses say a church parishioner was stabbed in the leg on sunday. >> several units. your suspect has black shorts. unknown length of the knife there in the middle of the street. church leaders at north beach's saints peter and paul church tell abc seven news that the eventual suspect, who they believe is unhoused, first came inside during a confirmation service.

>> the archbishop of san francisco was there, along with a very large congregation. due to safety concerns, leaders escorted the man outside. witnesses say he was speaking with someone saying, quote, jesus is not real. end quote. those witnesses went on to say that a short time later, that man stabbed a church parishioner in the street man's wife then called 911. church leaders tell me that several people actually held this stabbing suspect down in the street until police arrived. the man was arrested, but many community members i spoke with across the street in washington square are angry. >> these people are not looking for help. they're just like whacked out of their mind, whether it be drugs or whatever it is. like the city is just not doing anything about it. >> church leaders say they believe another unhoused individual came in a short time earlier during the confirmation service, walking up and down the main aisle with a bottle of wine. that man left, but his

actions had some on edge, only to then have this second incident. regina scolaro, whose son goes to school here and says she's frustrated with the city right now, but not surprised by this until we figure out how to solve this problem and solve it with with compassion and also, you know, crack down on things for people that need to really understand there are consequences to their behavior. san francisco police say charges against the stabbing suspect are pending and the victim's injuries are non-life threatening. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> police arrested five bar security guards saying they assaulted a patron last night in petaluma. it happened at jameson's roaring donkey in the heart of town. police say the cuomer, who was sober, argued with security guards whori to kick a woman out of a bathroom. then officers say the bouncers repeatedly hit him inside the bar and ctinu the assault on the sidewalk outside.

officers arrested the guards on suspicion of battery and conspiracy. some good news just in for drivers in the north bay. westbound highway 37 just reopened in the last hour. several hours ahead of schedule. 21 miles from vallejo to sears point. closed all weekend for repaving. it made for lengthy delays along the detour route. caltrans says it used nearly 5000 tons of asphalt and more than 300 trucks this weekend. the westbound construction continues next weekend, then the eastbound lanes will be closed for two weekends. sausalito leaders are hoping the ferry to san francisco will start running again this week. the sausalito pier has been closed all weekend after an inspection found a problem on friday. today we spotted a large crane and a barge ready to begin repairs. a city council member says they couldn't start until low tide just before five. busses are replacing golden gate ferry service in the meantime. all right. we got a taste of summer

this weekend. big changes, though, are on the way. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian joins us with the 24 hour forecast and the timeline. hey, spencer. >> okay, deon. well, changes are in the way, but we have one more taste of summer coming our way tomorrow. and here's a look at it starting at 7:00 tomorrow morning. a few high clouds around, but mainly sunny temperatures in the mid 50s at the bay and inland. then by midday by noon, warming up to upper 70s inland near 70 around the bay shoreline. upper 50s on the coast 4 p.m. we're looking at low 80s inland under bright sunny skies, mid 70s around the bay, 60 at the coast. and as we get to the 7:00 hour in the evening, a few coastal clouds will be developing, but skies will still be bright 70 inland, low 60s around the bay, mid 50s at the coast. now i'll tell you about all those changes. big cooldown is coming our way a little bit later when i have the complete accuweather seven day forecast. >> dion sounds good. spencer. thank you. time now for our abc seven news at 11 advancer helping you get ahead on the big headlines coming this week. up first, the supreme court case that california leaders and homeless advocates will be watching closely tomorrow, the

supreme court will hear arguments over whether people can be punished for sleeping outdoors. the lawsuit out of oregon is the court's most significant case on homelessness. in 40 years. appeals courts say it's cruel and unusual punishment to ticket people sleeping on the street when they have nowhere else to go. california leaders don't want the court to limit when they can clear encampments. our next abc seven news at 11 advancer is the unprecedented trial of former president donald trump. the 12 person jury has been seated, and tomorrow they'll hear opening statements. they'll have to decide if trump is guilty of falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to adult film actress stormy daniels. trump has pleaded not guilty and is promising to take the stand and ahead at 1130, we'll walk you through who else might be called to testify. our next adventure is an update in california's response to arizona's near-total abortion ban. governor gavin newsom says this week he'll propose legislation to make it

easier for people from arizona to get abortions. here. he wants to offer abortion providers in arizona a way to quickly get licensed, to offer care here in california. it's something arizona's attorney general called for after the state supreme court upheld that 160 year old ban providers in california are expecting a surge of patients from arizona and say they need help from doctors there to handle the demand. and our final abc seven news at 11 advancer an important time for jewish families happening amid threats and loss. passover begins tomorrow. abc seven news reporter tara campbell talked to synagogues stepping up precautions and families changing traditions amid the israel-hamas war. the calls to bring them home continue. >> the bay area jewish community, preparing for a celebratory yet somber passover for. >> i really hope that this holiday what brings us together is our humanity and our compassion, for each other.

first time since 1985, somewhat of a delayed souvenir from breed's trip to china. the mayor just got back from that week long visit. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard talked to her about the panda diplomacy success. >> it's definitely great to be home mayor london breed back in san francisco with news about her weeklong trip to china. we were truly successful in our trip. we had numerous meetings with government officials, with airlines and with business leaders. we held a business forum of people who have interest in not only doing business in san francisco, but investing in san francisco. >> but breed said the highlight of the trip had nothing to do with business, just check out her luggage. >> and of course, what everyone is truly excited about. >> pandas mayor breed signing an agreement with chinese wildlife officials to bring pandas to the

san francisco zoo as soon as early next year. we expect a pair of pandas, and they are hopefully anticipated to come as soon as we're able to raise the resources, do all the permitting, we are prepared to receive them so that when they do come to san francisco, they're environment, their food, their support will allow for them to be healthy and to thrive . millions of dollars in private donations need to be raised to build an enclosure for the pandas at the zoo. the last time pandas were in san francisco was the 1980s. thousands lined up to see them. come on, come on, mayor breed making this visit to see pandas up close. she called it a next level experience. >> i had a chance to go to the shanghai wildlife park, was the first time i actually saw a panda in person, and it was amazing. it was amazing to

see them walk to eat, to sit up, to pick up things with their hands. >> the mayor also meeting with airline officials in china in an effort to bring more flights between sfo and chinese destinations. >> overall, when we look at international travel, we've recovered 95. what still remains, though, is china. we're still only at 50% of what we were doing back in 2019. >> we know that there is a real demand. we heard it from tour operators who said we want more flights. we heard it from people who said, we want to come to san francisco at sfo. >> cornell, bernard, abc, seven news, new at 11 neighbors in the sierra foothills are supporting the family of the brothers attacked by a mountain lion, the el dorado county community continues to mourn 21 year old talon brook, who died in the attack last month. >> 18 year old wyatt is expected to make a full recovery today. neighbors held a benefit concert to at a brewery to raise money for wyatt's medical bills. >> most of these people are from

our community. these people came out, they obviously the story has gone wide and our community up here is amazing. they have come forward and so many ways you can't even describe it. and more than half a dozen bands came to perform for everyone. >> the family says they are remembering talon for being a very kind and gentle soul. wildlife officials are reporting the first whale death in the bay area this year. it's floating off the coast of crown beach in alameda. officials believe it's a young adult female gray whale that's estimated to be 40ft long. the coast guard and army corps of engineers will help tow the carcass to angel island state park, where they'll determine how it died. this is not the whale. keep in mind, seen entangled in fishing nets near daly city weeks ago. soon, when you pay your p-g-and-e's bill each month, you may not be paying just for electricity. you may also be paying for p-g-and-e's commercials, a new bill trying to change that gets

a second chance. this week, lawmakers are considering banning utility companies like p-g-and-e's from using customer money to pay for advertising and lobbying. p-g-and-e's has a plan to spend $6 million of customer money on commercials touting the company's work to manage wildfire risk. >> they shouldn't be using our money, our ratepayer money, when they have huge pots of shareholder money they can use for that purpose, the company argues. >> the bill would take power away from state regulators, who review what p-g-and-e's charges us for. a union for pg and e employees claims it would get in the way of union members freedom of speech and contract use. the bill failed in committee last week, but it is back up for another vote tomorrow. waymo robo taxis are now a common sight in san francisco and on the roadways. new data shows us where they are driving the most. the san francisco chronicle crunched the numbers, reported to state regulators, and they show in the first six months of waymo's commercial service,

hayes valley, mission bay, south of market and the mission district are hot spots for the robo taxis, waymo says it gave rides to more than half a million people from september through february, the company told the chronicle. the busiest nights are fridays and saturdays or any time there is an event at the chase center. waymo also says some riders are using the robo taxis to get to work every day drummers, dancers and decorative floats made their way through san francisco's japantown. today marking the end of the norcal cherry blossom festival. it shows everyone just all the little parts of what makes the japanese culture amazing. >> and so let it be the yosakoi dancing. let it be taiko drums. the one float i'm always impressed with is our queen court. and so it's always so proud to see what the next leaders of japantown will be. yeah yeah, such a nice turnout with thousands of attendees this year who enjoyed the annual bloom and dozens of activities,

performances and vendors. >> a pro-palestine group also blocked the parade route for a few minutes, calling for a cease fire. and boy, i've been to this event in years past when it is freezing cold, so this was quite a nice no freezing today. >> not here, just lovely. almost like summer right now. >> but not for long. >> not for long. maybe one more day. here's a look at what's going on. you can see on the satellite radar composite image. we have high pressure controlling our weather right now, bringing us, of course, the clear skies. and we have an onshore flow which was quite stronger, quite a bit stronger. earlier in the evening. but right now it's getting pretty weak. as i give you a look at the wind speeds right now, really, really calm. those places that actually have measurable wind speeds have wind speeds mainly around 4 or 5 or six miles per hour. so it's really calm out there. it's quite mild. 24 hour temperature change shows most locations a few degrees warmer than at this time last night. so on we go to a live view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco where it's 56 degrees right now, 58 in oakland, low to mid 60s at hayward and san jose and 48 at

half moon bay. so it's cooling down at the coast right now. the temperature readings right now looking across the bay toward the bay bridge from our uh- exploratorium camera 58 degrees in santa rosa, 50 at petaluma, 60 at napa. pretty mild 59 fairfield and low to mid 60s at concord and livermore. those are our warmest readings at the moment. so looking across the embarcadero from our rooftop camera, these are the forecast headlines. one more day of summer-like warmth tomorrow, then the middle of the week will bring us a sharp cool down, and by the end of the week, we'll see increasing clouds and a chance of some showers. forecast animation for the overnight shows just a few high clouds sweeping by, but we're talking about mainly clear skies overnight and certainly mainly sunny skies to start the day tomorrow. the overnight lows will be really mild. we won't see more than 1 or 2 locations dipping into the upper 40s. generally we'll be looking at low to mid 50s for our overnight lows, so uh- almost warm as a matter of fact, overnight and certainly warm again tomorrow, especially in our inland areas where we'll see highs of 82 at antioch and livermore, fairfield, san jose, 80 up north

at santa rosa, right around the bay shoreline, mainly mid 70s, perhaps even a couple of upper 70s around the bay and then on the coast, 61 at half moon bay. now, as we look at the maximum temperature trend for the next few days, you can see a sharp cool down by ten degrees or more on tuesday, ten degrees or more cooler than tomorrow's highs. wednesday pretty much the same range of highs thursday. that's steady range of cooler than average temperatures. and that will lead us into the end of the week. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so it won't get we won't have the threat of rain until the end of the week. we will see a few more clouds as it gets breezier and cooler midweek. but then on friday, clouds increase with a chance of showers. at the moment, this doesn't appear to be anything major. not a big storm, not heavy rain. but as we get closer to that date, we can give you a better idea of how much rain we'll get. but again, at the moment, just a chance of showers and then going into next weekend gets sunnier and warmer all over

the first criminal trial of a former president is unfolding this week. donald trump will be in court tomorrow as opening statements begin. here's a quick refresher on the big players. this all revolves around the months before trump was elected president back in 2016. he's accused of falsifying business records to hide hush money payments. star stormy daniels received $130,000 in exchange for her silence about a sexual encounter with trump ten years earlier. that payment came from michael cohen, trump's former attorney who pleaded guilty to charges tied to the hush money

scheme. as abc news reporter alison kosik shows us, all 3rd may take the stand. donald trump about to become the first former president to face a criminal trial. he's charged with illegally falsifying business records to cover up hush money payments to star stormy daniels to keep allegations of an affair out of the tabloids ahead of the 2016 election. trump has denied having an affair with daniels. the jury of seven men and five women, along with six alternates, were chosen from a pool of 200 new yorkers. those jurors, now sworn in ready for opening statements, which are scheduled to begin on monday. prosecutors have not said publicly who their first witnesses will be arguing they could face attacks from trump on social media. the judge agreed, and prosecutors were not forced to reveal who they will be calling to on testify. among the possible witnesses, former national enquirer publisher david pecker, who prosecutors say agreed to be the eyes and

ears of trump's 2016 campaign by identifying damaging stories about trump and keeping them out of print. trump's former lawyer, michael cohen, could also be called as a witness. as well as stormy daniels, the former president is using this prosecution as a political rallying cry. this is a giant witch hunt to try and hurt a campaign that's beating the worst president in history. while president biden is out on the campaign trail making his case to voters, donald trump, in an email to his supporters complaining that he's trapped in court. >> you can come out and say, sure that this is all a witch hunt and that might rev up his base. but is that really appealing to the independent voters, the republicans, who are not sold on the former president that he needs to win over in order to clinch the white house? >> alison kosik, abc news, new york. we are committed to following the story here at abc seven. we took you inside weeks ago as san quentin prepared to close its death row. and tonight , we know 26 of the inmates living there just moved to a

prison in southern california. the mayor in chino is concerned, though, saying the prison's decaying infrastructure may not be secure for the condemned inmates. >> they are the worst of the worst, and most of those prisoners have spent their entire prison time on a level four yard, and the california institute for men is at best in its prime, a level two yard. the third oldest prison in the state. it was actually constructed in 1941, and for several years now, it's been woefully underfunded. inmates have escaped from the prison in chino before. >> regardless, the state department of corrections and rehabilitation intends to transfer at least seven more inmates. there we'll take a look at some really heartbreaking moments out of saint paul, minnesota. good samaritans and a state worker helped rescue a driver from a burning car. the suv drifted off the highway, hit a light pole, then a guardrail, catching fire. and as the flames grew more intense, one man managed to break the suv's window and the group pulled the

driver out feet first. he went to the hospital for evaluation but was not hurt. a ride got a little too real at universal studios hollywood this weekend. 15 people were hurt when a tram crashed into a guardrail during the studio tour attraction. chp says the tram was turning, but the last car hit the rail, knocking over the car. no one's injuries were severe, the theme park says. tours resume today with a modified route. well, it is the stuff of dreams for some kids. a four day school week. a school in louisiana is trying it out. administrators at the school in suburban baton rouge are trying to change the culture. after noticing students less motivated since covid. they believe juniors and seniors will perform better if they are only in school. monday through thursday. the students, as you can imagine, are excited about it. >> a lot of us have jobs. a lot of us we participate in after school activities and i feel like it's an amazing incentive. >> it gives me more time to

>> there is a push for major spending to control flooding here in the bay area, as climate change pushes our tides higher and higher. abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian shows us how proposed solutions go beyond levees and seawalls. using nature to stop the water. >> reporter as with many pacific islanders living around east palo alto, the shoreline is a spiritual place to anthony tongia and violet siena. a lot of things you know happened, but this over here, you can walk a nice and hear the water and then hear the bird. >> and that's everything. >> they're part of a community that has helped restore this section of cooley landing park. and they say people here are keenly aware of the threat to the shoreline from flooding and sea level rise. >> many of them would say, oh, you know, we came to the united states because we want to feel safe. and now they're hearing of the same problems again, like, where are they going to go next? right they came here because of climate change and sea level rise. it is a beautiful place.

>> we met the pair as sienna was leading a tour of the area with lawmakers who are sponsoring climate bond legislation designed to pay for shoreline projects, including the restoration of thousands of acres of tidal marsh that can help absorb the rising sea levels that have already begun flooding this area of east palo alto. during king tides. >> you know, wetlands actually act as a sponge. they slow down the flow of water. they absorb high flood waters and then release them slowly when the tide goes down or when the storm passes. david lewis directs the environmental nonprofit save the bay. >> he says the region is barely halfway to its goal of restoring and protecting 100,000 acres of tidal marsh. but earlier this year, crews finally breached a levee at a nearby salt pond, creating the bay's newest tidal marsh alongside a green levee planted by the group. we've learned in the last 20 years that we can restore these diked off areas to tidal marsh, and

that's really improved the health of the bay. but in the next few weeks, we could learn whether there will be money to keep up the pace. lawmakers have pressed governor newsom to back a climate bond of $10 billion or more in time to make the deadline for the fall ballot. but with the state facing a multi-billion dollar deficit, the financial landscape is growing more unpredictable. still, though, backers say the spending would help protect housing developments and existing communities. adrian covert is with the bay area council. >> i don't think that we can get the most cost effective flood solution for the bay area without incorporating and maximizing our tidal marsh restoration opportunities and the urgency is easy to see with areas like bel marin, keys near novato and foster city already needing to bolster everything from seawalls to improved levees and other flood control structures. >> backers believe expanding tidal marsh will help take some of the pressure off in coming decades and protect shoreline areas that have become both a
