with pro-palestinian protests growing on college campuses, some of those taking part explain why they're doing it and their ultimate goal. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. the protesters at stanford and colleges across the country are demanding their universities end their investments in companies involved in the israel-hamas

war. abc seven news reporter leanna howland dives into that demand, and what companies protesters are targeting. >> a cardboard cutout of stanford university president richard saller with blood on his hands and signs calling for divestment, are greeting newly admitted students at stanford's spring admit weekend. >> we want stanford university to pull all of its funding from companies that are helping facilitate israeli war crimes. >> it's unclear how many students slept here friday night, but more than two dozen tents are still set up on the campus's white plaza. they've been here since thursday for what demonstrators are calling a people's university for palestine. this demonstration, drawing support from this parent of an incoming political science student here visiting from georgia. >> so it appealed me. let's go. i have a couple of hours and offer them whatever help they i can do for them being a parent. >> adrianna, a stanford junior and spokesperson for the group,

says there, lined in solidarity with other schools nationwide. they're demanding stanford separate itself from any companies or organizations advancing military efforts in the israel-hamas war. and they're calling out three well-known companies stanford has ties with lockheed martin, stanford has ties with chevron with hp, and all three of those companies, are hurting the palestinian people. in a statement, the university said. in 2015, the board declined a proposal to divest of certain companies doing business in israel. they say that decision has remained in place ever since. they also say it doesn't impact stanford's endowment, which the university website shows is $36.5 billion as of last august. stanford's statement continues to say the university's endowment has no direct holdings in israeli companies or direct holdings in defense contractors, beyond small exposures resulting from passive funds that track broad

indexes, such as the s&p 500. but students say they want more transparency. >> stanford refuses to disclose its, investments like where it puts its money, and that's another thing we would like the school to do >> lena howland abc seven news. >> tensions on college campuses around the country are rising. some protesters face deadlines to clear out, and police are also making arrests. jewish students at some schools say they do not feel safe on campus. abc's phil lipof has a look at what's going on with some pro-palestinian demonstrations. hands up the middle east. >> chaos on college campuses across the country. as protests over the israel-hamas war continued to grow. since last week, demonstrations and tent encampments popping up at at least 48 colleges across the country in boston, authorities began clearing an encampment from northeastern university's campus on saturday, school officials say what began as a student demonstration two days

ago was infiltrated by professional organizers with no affiliation to the university. some protesters hurling anti-semitic slurs, the university saying, we cannot tolerate this kind of hate on our campus. at least 100 people arrested and charged with trespassing. students at california polytechnic humboldt campus taking over a building as part of their protest. the school telling abc news protesters are demanding, among other things, the school disclose all holdings and collaboration with israel, cut ties with all israeli universities, divest from companies and corporations which are profiting from the israel-hamas war, and publicly call for a cease fire at george washington university in the nation's capital. the school says anyone who remains in university yard risks temporary suspension and being barred from campus. >> we are here to stay. we will not give up. we won't rest until you divest. >> and at columbia university, where pro-palestinian protests began earlier this month, some

jewish students say they feel unsafe on campus. >> on this campus, people chant that zionists are not welcome, calling on, quote, death to the jewish state. >> meantime, outside the university halls, pro-israel counter-protesters gathered on friday calling for the release of all israeli hostages taken by hamas on october 7th, columbia senate, which includes both faculty and students, voted to create a task force to look into the administration's leadership. during these protests, including the decision to call in the nypd last week. phil lipof, abc news, new york. >> we do have continuing coverage of the campus protests across the country and here in the bay area, all at our website, abc7 news.com. moving on in the east bay, citizens from one oakland neighborhood plagued by sex trafficking are calling for more help from city hall. mayor shengtao and alameda county district attorney pamela

price were there for today's rally. today at 13th avenue in international neighbors and community groups say the area is seeing an increase in prostitution, often involving underage girls. they asked city leaders to do more than just make arrests. >> will you lead a multi-jurisdictional effort to fund, design and launch regional human trafficking awareness campaign to increase public awareness of the impact of sex trafficking on victims and consequences for those who buy sex? >> today's press conference took place just a few blocks from saint anthony's k through eight school, where more than a year ago, the abc7 news i-team shot video of women who appear to be sex workers soliciting right outside the school in the middle of the day. the city says when they put up barriers near saint anthony's. the prostitution and trafficking moved down the street. today marks one year since the shooting death of a 24 year old transgender man at a san francisco walgreens. the

incident led to calls for justice for bank o'browne and as abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports a year later, the anger and grief continues. ray, his name brown calls for justice ringing out one year ago today, the day a security guard shot and killed banco brown at a walgreens in san francisco. >> franco was the type of person to give you the shirt off his own back. that's how that's how much he thought about others, even when he was struggling himself. >> julia arroyo is the executive director of the young women's freedom center, where banco was coming into his own fighting for transgender rights. >> he organized to talk about trans housing and specifically for trans masculine folks. he educated his. he taught us a lot. >> anger still felt over what played out in this walgreens. a guard suspecting the 24 year old of shoplifting in a scuffle shooting banco, later saying he felt his life was threatened one year out, the anger is just

coming from that. there really isn't justice for banco right now. in this moment, the san francisco district attorney's office didn't charge the guard with bianco's killing, saying there was clear evidence it was self-defense. >> a year after banco brown. sadly, things have not changed, they've only gotten harder and harder. >> gail lala chavez is the executive director of lyric, a center in san francisco serving lgbtq plus youth. and they say the attacks on transgender rights across the country are taking a toll. >> in the last year alone, tara, we we've seen about, i would say, about 45% of our youth experiencing homelessness are coming from out of the state, out of the country. >> the increasing demand for services, strapping nonprofits desperate for more resources. >> it's really difficult times right now. we honestly don't know what to do. the only thing i do know our doors will remain open. they have to. for young

people. similar to banco brown. >> tara campbell, abc seven news happening now two major road closures impacting drivers as caltrans tries to make repairs. >> nine miles of 680 southbound are closed through pleasanton between the 580 connector and koopman road that closure is scheduled to last until monday. caltrans is working on road repairs in the area. >> anybody who is familiar with that part of the road knows that there's potholes and all kinds of problems, and so right now, i'm happy to say we are on track to reopen on on time, on schedule. >> that is encouraging. 680 is scheduled to reopen at 4 a.m. monday. now in the north bay, westbound highway 37 is also closed all weekend. caltrans is repairing the pavement from vallejo to sears point. this is the second weekend in a row now that the road is shut down. there were brutal delays on the detour route last week, with people waiting 90 minutes to go just 13 miles. the closures are

shame on you. shame on you. >> as you hear protesters heckled and confronted people arriving to attend the white house correspondents dinner in washington, d.c. tonight, they shouted shame on you at people making their way towards the venue inside the hilton hotel. a small group reenacted the torture and imprisonment of palestinians, also saying the attending the diner dinner, i should say, equated to supporting the genocide in gaza. a south bay doctor is on her way to the middle east tonight to take part in voluntary volunteer medical mission in rafah, in the

south of gaza. the situation in gaza has become dire, with reports of hospitals being attacked and doctors killed. but this doctor says she is not going to be deterred. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has her story. >> by many accounts, it's currently one of the most dangerous places in the world. but that's not stopping doctor islami from going to gaza. >> when you see people who are starving or don't have health care, who have uh- don't have any basic needs, why not help? >> doctor shakil islami is a family physician at sutter health in san carlos. on saturday, she heads out on a two week medical mission to gaza. she lands in cairo and then heads to the rafah border, where a group of medical volunteers will cross into the town of rafah. >> you don't have everything at your disposal, but you can do your part and hopefully it will help, right? it will help sometimes when, you know, a kid

is sick giving them the correct antibiotic. >> doctor sheikholeslami says she knows she's entering a war zone. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu has warned of an imminent ground invasion of rafah, but she says that's not her focus right now. >> i have the faith that it will work out, you know, you know, and, that's my life is not any important than anybody else's life. >> her niece, sana, says that's the kind of determination that has always driven her, and it really reflects everything that my aunt does, in this world, as a mother, wife, doctor simply as, you know, a genuinely good hearted person. >> sana adds that the family is not surprised that her aunt is meeting this moment in history. i think we are all really concerned for her safety, but we're also really, really proud of her. doctor sheikholeslami says she's not trying to save the world, just help the people of gaza bear witness to the atrocities of war and take a stand for something she believes

in. >> yes it is. there's a risk involved. but then, you know, inshallah, it would be, it will be certainly worth it. and, and then i can come back and talk about all that i have witnessed in the south bay. >> anser hassan abc seven news. >> new at 11, ucsf health has formally broken ground on what it calls the hospital of the future. today, hospital officials celebrated the start of a massive rebuild of the parnassus heights campus. the plan involves building a new 15 story hospital and research center at the current site, which has been operating since the early 1900s. the expected cost more than $4 billion. >> we're going to add almost 200 beds of capacity and double the size of the emergency room. so this is really about serving the city of san francisco in the region with more capacity. >> the new hospital is scheduled to open in 2030. hundreds of people in the south bay put on

in other locations are generally under 20mph. let's take a look at the 24 hour temperature change. it's just a few degrees warmer, two to 4 or 5 degrees warmer in most bay area locations than at this time last night. so on we go. beautiful view from mount tam under clear skies, looking down onto san francisco where it's 53 degrees right now. mid 50s at oakland, hayward, san jose, redwood city and 52 at half moon bay. another beautiful view from the sutro tower camera looking out over the city. 57 in santa rosa right now. a cool 48 at petaluma, 51 at napa, fairfield and concord. mid 50s and 52 at livermore. and now let's check out our forecast headlines. overnight skies will be mainly clear. it will remain windy at the coast, but not quite so gusty as it was in the early evening hours tomorrow. sunny and a little bit milder than today and the week ahead will bring us sunny days with a warming trend that will take temperatures up into the low 80s later in the week. but for tonight, look for mainly clear skies. we'll see a patch or two of high clouds swinging through the bay area, but generally it's

going to be clear skies with a sunny start to the day tomorrow and a continuing brisk flow of wind down at the coastline. the overnight low temperatures will be mainly in the upper 40s in our inland communities. in fact, they're pretty chilly up in lakeport, with a low of 39. hi lows rather right around the bay shoreline will be in the low 50s, and then highs tomorrow up to about 59 at half moon bay, 64 here in san francisco around the bay shoreline up to about 70 degrees. our inland areas will see highs in the low to mid 70s tomorrow. but as we look at the maximum temperature trend going into next week, you see the temperatures will rise into the upper 70s in many inland areas. on monday, low 70s around the bay shoreline, pretty much the same range on tuesday, then a degree or two warmer on wednesday. as we start to approach 80 degrees in our inland areas. and here is the accuweather seven day forecast. and as you can see, midweek will bring us the peak of our warming wednesday through friday. we'll see high temperatures inland in the low 80s right around the bay shoreline, mid to upper 70s and

is now assessing the damage in nebraska after numerous reported tornadoes touched down near lincoln and omaha on friday. douglas county hard hit several buildings at omaha's eppley airfield suffered significant damage, but fortunately, the passenger terminal was not hit. drone footage captured the destruction in omaha roads filled with debris, roofs torn off. >> we can see it form behind it and then once it hit that house, it just it obliterated. you can see there's nothing left on the ground, but it was just sticks. it wasn't a formed home. >> and in lancaster county, about 70 people were trapped inside this manufacturing business after a reported tornado slammed into it. three people were injured. >> we are very thankful that there were not more injuries and that everybody's going to be okay. >> president biden has reached out to the governor. >> the federal government is here to help us every single step of the way. it's going to be a lot of people needing a lot of help throughout the day. >> saturday, six states from texas to iowa were under a tornado watch that's moving supercell that we have right

here that is north of the stillwater airport in kansas. several reported tornadoes and one confirmed touching down in robinson not far from the missouri border, and another confirmed tornado in harrold, texas. officials now working to determine if it was a tornado that hit hardy, oklahoma. high school proms and other events canceled across much of oklahoma city as the dangerous weather moved through flood watches issued across eight states from texas to iowa through monday afternoon, heavy downpours could dump significant amounts of rain over a short period of time on sunday. the threat of severe weather is reduced, but there is still the possibility of damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes across several states. once this line of storms dies out, a break in the severe weather is expected, giving people an opportunity to start the recovery process. chuck sivertsen, abc news, new york. >> harvey weinstein was hospitalized after his return to new york city from an upstate prison, his attorney said today. he has a lot of problems. he's

getting all kinds of tests and is somewhat of a train wreck. health wise. weinstein was already dealing with a variety of health issues. the new york court of appeals nullified his rape conviction on thursday, which erased his 23 year prison sentence and ordered a retrial. the people hit hardest by california's home insurance crisis could be facing a new blow. the head of california's insurance plan of last resort says rates are probably about to skyrocket for many homeowners. the state's fair plan is the only option. it's pricey, thousands of dollars a year, more than other plans for people in high wildfire risk areas, the head of the fair plan told a state committee this week that problem is going to get worse. >> our rates are going to go up, no question about it. if we can put that cost of reinsurance in there, if we can put use catastrophe modeling, just like the voluntary market, our rates are going to go up. >> this week, we learned allstate will consider once again writing new policies in

california, but only if the state makes changes to make it easier for them to raise rates. the head of the fair plan wants those same options, so the plan can have enough money to cover losses in a bad fire. a deal to send a second pair of pandas from china to california is now official. more than a week after agreeing to send pandas to the san francisco zoo, the chinese government signed an agreement to send two more bears to the san diego zoo. that deal was originally announced in february. these are pictures of the male and female pandas. their names are yang chuan and shen bao. san diego last had pandas five years ago. the zoo will now begin to upgrade enclosures so the animals have a larger living space. once everything is approved, the two bears could arrive by the end of the summer. the pandas coming to san francisco are expected to arrive in 2025. san francisco officials joined the japan town community today to break ground on the peace plaza renovation

of the number of unhoused people, but few record their deaths. alameda county has been analyzing homeless deaths since 2018. abc7 news reporter lyanne melendez explains why recording deaths can help save lives. >> the way the unhoused congregate varies from city to city. some of oakland's encampments seem somewhat secluded away from disapproving eyes. thousands of people get in their cars to commute to work every day, not knowing that under these freeways are communities of unhoused people. for many here in oakland, this is their refuge. >> it's basically a safe place for me because i know everybody around here, so i don't have to really worry about nobody trying to steal nothing from me or whatever. >> stonis arrington was born and raised in west oakland, a short distance from where he now calls home. he's been homeless for three years. is there any hope coming from you to someday get out of this situation? yes.

>> that's the only thing that keeps me going is hope and prayer. >> i'm billy bob. >> billy bob lives in an rv and is the owner of this pile of goods. he's been unhoused since 1988. the why is irrelevant, he tells us. what's important is that he's learned to adjust. >> and god fulfilled his promise. three scores and ten. >> three scores and ten is a biblical term meaning a life expectancy of 70 years old. billy bob is 71. but for those living on the streets in all of alameda county, the average age of those who die experiencing homelessness is 52. most are male and african american, 351 unhoused people died here in 2022. those are the most recent numbers compiled cardiac hypertension, diabetes, liver disease, cancers, stroke. drug overdoses are also a factor. how

do they know this? david mosebach works for the alameda county health care for the homeless program. >> we did data matching to find out how many people who died in alameda county were also homeless, known to be homeless. and then we also looked at death records to see if there were clues, died in a dumpster, died behind on the streets in a tent king camp, unsheltered and that information helps to avoid unnecessary deaths and determine the kinds of treatments needed to save lives. >> lucy kasdin directs the program, like really bringing care and increasing access to care for this community. >> so bringing that service directly to people where they where, where they live, right. as opposed to them having to leave their belongings, maybe things get stolen when they go to a clinic. >> being a female out there is not it's not safe. and that's like coming here and being able to lock my door. also, having a bathroom is amazing. >> melissa fischer, once unhoused, has now been given supportive housing but remembers

the few times when people died alone. >> there's one gentleman that passed away and he was in an encampment in a tent, and he was there for like a week and nobody knew. no one knew. >> and billy bob told us they don't think about dying on these streets when people realize that they're going to die. >> i think that's the point in life where everybody go crazy. >> you really don't have anybody looking after you know, this guy . do you worry at all that you know something might happen to you and nobody will know? no >> i think i got faith in god. >> you've got faith in god. >> leon melendez reporting there . all right, one last check of the weather situation and things seem to be on the up and up, spencer. they are indeed. >> we've got some very nice weather coming our way. well, it started today, but overnight it will be clear. windy at the coast and then tomorrow sunny and even a little milder than today was. and the week ahead
