celebrations underway around the bay area. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> protesters continue to toe the line between free speech and disruptive discourse on college campuses across the country. now, some of those schools are trying to return to normal heading into a new week. we begin now with the latest on those protests, where ucla plans to return to regular operations tomorrow, according to an online post by campus officials. this was the scene on campus just days ago. the protest interrupted some graduation ceremonies at colleges and universities across the country this weekend. abc's zohreen shah is following all the developments from los angeles. the lapd on campus at usc early sunday morning. >> the schools department of public safety says officers were called in to provide security as

the university worked to peacefully remove an illegal encampment. >> and it seemed like the people in the encampment followed. lapd's orders. >> no arrests have been reported. ceasefire now. protesters gathering again at the university of texas in austin sunday. we stand with palestine. the art institute of chicago, saturday. swat teams called in after pro-palestinian protesters tried to set up an encampment, police facing off with them for hours. at least 68 people were arrested at the university of virginia police in riot gear, moving in to clear an encampment. more than two dozen arrested these protests, many of which have been going on for weeks, are now impacting graduation ceremonies at the university of wisconsin-milwaukee, an encampment still on campus despite graduation events. >> this should have ended long ago, and the only way this will end is if our demands are met. >> shut it down. >> shut it down. the university of michigan's graduation was briefly interrupted by pro-palestinian protesters chanting and waving palestinian flags. we shall not be in new

york city. police moved in last week when protesters took over a building on columbia university's campus. >> the police came in and exactly two hours everything was over. it was a beautiful thing to watch. >> these protests happening amid the war in gaza are ■now campain issue breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations. >> none of this is a peaceful protest. >> new york city mayor eric adams has said many of those arrested have been what he called outside agitators. >> when those protests reached the point of violence as the president stated, we have to ensure that we use a minimum amount of force to terminate what is perceived to be a threat. >> zohreen shah, abc news, los angeles. >> here in the bay area, encampments remain in place at san francisco state, uc berkeley, stanford, sonoma state and uc santa cruz. they have been mostly peaceful. last week, representatives from the american civil liberties union visited the protest area at

berkeley to inform the students what rights they have while protesting and what would be illegal while an investigation is underway in oakland. after a person was found shot to death near lake merritt, police say it happened today at noon at first avenue and east 12th street. the victim was found inside a vehicle in the parking lot of the america's best value inn hotel. it appears the car crashed in the parking lot and the shooting happened at a nearby location. moving on to new developments in a story we first brought you last week involving a san francisco man and an egregious show of racism, terry williams is black and has lived in alamo square his entire life. on april 26th, terry found a doll with a noose around its neck on his doorstep. there was also a piece of paper so covered with slurs we couldn't show them on tv. now, despite reporting the incident to police and numerous neighbors speaking out in a show of support, it allegedly happened again last night. terry and his neighbors are fearful and furious and want

more action from police and community leaders. you'll hear from them tonight on abc seven news at 11. texas is being hit hard by more flooding today after severe storms and tornado activity. hundreds of people and their pets have been rescued by boats in mandatory evacuation zones. livestock are also stranded. downpours continue for a third day today, especially around houston and eastern texas. millions in oklahoma are also under flood warnings and watches. right now, authorities have not yet reported any deaths or injuries. cinco de mayo celebrations are underway and for some, taking part in the biggest bay area celebrations. it's more than just a good time in the south bay. it's an opportunity for a lesson in history and culture. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has more from san jose, where the city is marking cinco de mayo in a big way. >> cinco de mayo in downtown san

because happiness matters. firefighters from across the country gathered this weekend in maryland to honor some true heroes. the annual national fallen firefighters foundation memorial weekend included a morning memorial service. this weekend's events are a tribute to 89 firefighters who died in the line of duty last year, and 137 who died in previous years. 16 of them were from california. each firefighter's name will be inscribed on a bronze plaque and become a permanent part of the national memorial. holocaust remembrance day was commemorated in the bay area today with a plea for greater tolerance. speakers highlighted growing anti-semitism here in the bay area and across the nation, and an event this afternoon at the

contemporary jewish museum in san francisco. holocaust remembrance day honors the more than 6 million jews who were murdered by germany during world war two. those who spoke today said they are also alarmed by growing ignorance toward the atrocity. >> it's our collective responsibility to remember the holocaust for those that went through the worst of the worst. but also it shouldn't have to come to that. you know, jews are feeling more and more unsafe in their own communities, and we have to put a stop to this. >> today's remembrance included a reading of names, a prayer service, and discussion about fighting anti-semitic ism in today's world. governor gavin newsom is going to great lengths and great heights to spread the word that california's tourism industry is booming. >> the people coming back not only to visit, but coming back to live as well. >> the governor's office posted this video on social media showing newsom at the top of the golden gate bridge. he says travel spending in the state reached all time highs last

channel seven went live on the air for the first time from sutro mansion on may 5th, 1949. in the 1970s. a show called news seen changed tv news to what it is today. the basic format pretty similar to now, but for its time it was a revolution with cutting edge stories on social change. also a new focus on people's everyday concerns, consumer issues, health news stories about children and education, even pop culture all became part of the programing.

still breezy, but we don't have the widespread, powerful gusts that we had earlier in the evening. and it's about two, three, four, five degrees warmer in most bay area locations right now than at this time yesterday evening. so let's take a live view. looking out over san francisco from sutro tower, 54 degrees here in the city right now. a chilly 52 at half moon bay, upper 50s at oakland and hayward and redwood city, 60 at san jose. nice clear view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. we've got 60 degrees up north at santa rosa right now, only 52 at petaluma, mid to upper 50s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. let's now check out our forecast headlines or excuse me this evening. clear, breezy and cool. that's what we have right now. the beginning of the week. sunny and a warming trend begins tomorrow and tuesday. by the end of the week, it'll be like summer. i mean, we have quite a warm up coming our way and it's going to be hot in some spots. but right now, during the overnight hours, late night hours, i should say we're looking at that onshore flow continuing. we'll see a few clouds move up to the coastline

sort of, but they won't move over land. so we'll have clear skies overnight with low temperatures, mainly in the low to mid 40s, chillier up north where lows will drop into the 30s. mid to upper 30s at lakeport, santa rosa, ukiah. then tomorrow look for sunny skies and a little milder than today. the warm up won't actually be in high gear tomorrow. 57.5 moon bay mid 60s right around the bay shoreline. tomorrow we'll see mostly upper 60s to about 70 in the warmest inland locations. tomorrow, however, let's skip ahead to wednesday when we'll see highs inland moving into the low or low to mid 80s and upper 70s around the bay shoreline. then on thursday mid or mid to upper 80s inland and up to low 80s around the bay. and then on friday which is likely to be the hottest or the warmest day in the forecast period. we'll see upper 80s to about 90 in the warmest inland locations, low 80s, upper 70s to low 80s around the bay shoreline and up to about 70 in some coastal locations. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. the warm up gets off to a slow

sets its sights on a new part of the bay area. those stories and more tonight on abc7 news at 11. well, finally now, congratulations to all the runners in this morning's bay bridge half marathon, including one of the youngest participants. there she goes. as eight year old margaux. she'll accomplished her goal of finishing the marathon in under 2.5 hours. margaux dad sent us video as she crossed the finish line. they came from portland to take part in the race. margaux picked up running as a hobby when she was six years old, and as a reward for finishing today's 13 mile run, dad says margaux gets a trip to target to pick up a couple of toys she has already picked out. look at her motor form. not even a sweat. she's got her shades on. >> yeah. >> she's cool. yeah. very impressive. do you think you could do that? no but maybe i should start running so i get some toys. >> oh, is that how
