california last year. but businesses in san francisco's fisherman's wharf are skeptical. >> i mean, back in 2016, this place was mobbed on the weekends . i mean, there was a line going down the stairs. we don't see that at all on even on a saturday night. >> and visit california says travel spending reached just over $150 billion across the state in 2023. but that number does not factor in inflation when adjusted for inflation. travel spending in 2023 was down 14% compared to before the pandemic. in 2019, and visit california has previously predicted that california would not be fully recovered from the pandemic until 2027. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. and the south bay police are looking for the person who stabbed two people less than an hour after cinco de mayo celebrations wrapped up in san jose. police say a man is in critical

condition and the second victim is a juvenile whose injuries are non-life threatening. it happened last night near emma prusch farm. residents call it disappointing. >> i'm not surprised. have you seen the area? i've worked here or i've lived here since maybe since like 2012, i reckon. and you know, i've been working here and it's been getting worse and worse. you know, i can understand that this is, you know, a damper, but, you know, shoot. i mean, just keep looking. moving forward, i guess authorities haven't said whether the violence had any connection to the cinco de mayo festivities . >> oakland police say a mass shooting at a juneteenth celebration near lake merritt back in 2020 1st may be connected to another homicide that happened more than a year earlier. deshawn rhodes died in the june 2021 shooting on lakeshore avenue, five men and two women were also hurt. investigators now say the people responsible for that shooting are behind another killing. a year earlier, henry texada was

shot and killed in east oakland in april of 2020. police say the group used a nissan suv rented in nevada as the getaway vehicle. police are asking for your help to identify the suspects. >> so far this year, crime is down in nearly every neighborhood in san francisco, but according to analysis from the chronicle, one neighborhood saw the opposite. in noe valley, crime was up 15% from january to april compared to the same time last year. there were increases in burglaries and larceny theft, including car break ins, which made up more than half of the reported crimes. >> new developments in a story of racism we first told you about last week, a black man in san francisco found a doll with a noose around its neck on his doorstep, and now he says, it's happened again. dog walker terry williams first discovered the doll in a plastic bag at his alamo square home the morning of april 26th. it was with a piece of paper with dozens of slurs and racist imagery. so bad that

we can't show it to you on tv. sfpd says it's investigating this as a possible hate crime. yesterday terry woke up to another bag. this one had a toy grenade and threats. if he didn't leave his alamo square neighborhood, they really targeted me. >> now, like i need to really like this is reaching another level. they had another picture of me and then they had it a detail at the at the bottom. what they going to do? like like we're we're coming for you. >> neighbors have since banded together to raise money for terry so he can install new security cameras and move his elderly parents into a temporary home. they're disappointed that this happened again. despite their calls to police last week, and they're asking community leaders to do more. >> we're just really hopeful that moving forward, they can be more transparent and let us know what's going on and what their, you know, the actions that they're taking to find who did this. >> it makes me wonder, like, are we really protected around here? >> terry has been in contact with president of the san

francisco chapter of the naacp, amos brown. supervisor dean preston tells abc seven news tracking the case. he's tracking the case closely with the police chief and local police captain. he calls the incidents vile harassment and intimidation, and that this would not be tolerated. >> the presidential election is just six months away. a new abc news ipsos poll shows donald trump and president biden are neck and neck. trump has a slight edge at 46% over president biden at 44. and for personal favorability, mr. biden is seen as more honest and trustworthy, leading trump 40 to 33. both candidates are seen as more unfavorable than not. among top issues for voters is abortion access. president biden has a 12 point lead over trump on the issue. the former president continues to avoid specific positions, instead deferring to states on the issue . >> a big hearing is set for

today that will give a local government, will give local governments more say over autonomous vehicles. a decision on this issue will really shape the future of self-driving cars here in california. >> now, reggie aqui a south bay state senator, dave cortez, is behind the bill that would give cities and counties, say, over how self-driving cars operate within their communities. waymo will start testing its robo taxis in seven more bay area cities in the coming weeks, all on the peninsula. in march, the state puc cleared the way for waymo to expand its operating area to include parts of san mateo and santa clara counties. the pilot program will only be available to waymo employees at first. they will be able to order rider only trips anywhere from san francisco to san mateo and burlingame. senator cortez said this about the bill on the robo taxis in march that we need to create a system right away, you know, to do just modest regulations, modest controls, ordinary normal traffic controls to make things safe for our

students just this morning, the university said it would still have school level ceremonies at ucla. classes will be back in session today after violent clashes between pro-palestinian protesters and counter-protesters. police arrested more than 200 people last week. ucla chancellor says the school will change its security operations and create a new office of campus safety. the university is hiring former sacramento police chief rick brazile to lead that new team focused on security. also in la, usc is cleaning up protesters second attempt to put up an encampment. the university called in the lapd saturday night to clear out that group, saying the encampment was breaking the law. we don't know if any protesters were arrested this time. usc's graduation, much like columbia's graduation, is going to go on. but minus the big commencement ceremony, the university could call that off. following backlash over its cancellation of the valedictorian speech, they cited safety issues over her pro-palestinian views.

>> we're also following the pro-palestinian encampment on uc berkeley's campus. it has reportedly expand, and this is video from last week, the chronicle reports. alumni have now joined protesters in sproul plaza. it's unclear how many people are there now. the university spokesperson told the chronicle the administration was aware of this new encampment extension here in the bay area. encampments remain in place at san francisco state, uc berkeley, stanford, sonoma state d uc santa cruz. for the most part, they have all remained peaceful. >> some french bakers celebrating this morning after setting a new guinness world record for baking the longest baguette on the planet. it just seems to go on forever. it's 461ft long, beating italy's previous record. obviously, this video is sped up so that we can see the whole thing and i'll be here all day. bakers say they began kneading and shaping the dough at 3 a.m, before putting it to a specially built, slow

people are expected to be in san francisco for a big cybersecurity conference at the moscone center. secretary of state antony blinken will be giving a keynote speech. this event comes after governor newsom made a big announcement from the top of the golden gate bridge. he says tourism is at an all time high. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live now with reaction from local businesses and why the governor's numbers don't tell the whole story. >> good morning stephanie. the governor is touting huge spending by tourists in california last year. but some business owners say they are just not seeing it. >> so we couldn't be more proud to announce today record breaking tourism numbers in the state of california over $15 billion of tourism spend unprecedented in our state's history. >> the wharf is still not back to where it was. you know, i mean, you have half the restaurants are closed compared to 2019. we're down 40, 50% and the wharf has come back

this on friday morning. the police officers union says that officer jaime arredondo had a second surgery over the weekend. he was last listed in critical condition. a second officer had minor injuries and has been released from the hospital. police say the shooting happened late thursday night when the officers responded to a man breaking into a hotel room in south san jose. he shot at the officers. they shot back. the suspect was also injured and is taken into custody. >> we continue to follow the effort to improve living conditions for farmworkers on the peninsula. it's been a year and a half now since the mass shooting in half moon bay highlighted the need for safe and affordable places for workers to live. now, the chronicle is reporting that at least one project meant to improve living conditions is now being stalled. according to the report, the planning commission has held public meetings for a proposed five story, 40 unit complex on kelly avenue. both times, public comment was positive, however, the commissioners chose to delay a vote. commissioners criticized

the building for being too tall. they also worried about the potential traffic and said it is out of character with downtown. >> half moon bay, a local nonprofit, is trying to cultivate the next generation of inventors. but a fire last week did extensive damage to its creative space. san francisco based human made provides space, tools and training to up and coming inventors and entrepreneurs, the founder says the fire was devastating. there was extensive smoke damage to the walls and water from fire fighting reached 4 to 5in inside. now the group has been forced to take its training online. >> we focus on hands on learning here where hands on program, so it's going to have a significant impact over the next month at least, as well as the businesses that really count on our space to run their day to day operations or launch their product or their idea. >> in the meantime, they're hoping a gofundme campaign will help cover some of the upfront losses. you can find a link to help at abc seven news.com. >> native american groups are calling attention to the issue

of missing and murdered indigenous women. the american indian cultural center of san francisco held a spring dance at the presidio yesterday. the goal was to put a spotlight on the high rate of assault, abduction and murder of tribal members. >> we want to make sure that our families get justice, and so we want to bring attention to this epidemic and make sure that those loved ones that are missing or have been murdered, we say their name, that they get justice. >> organizers say government data on the issue is inaccurate and incomplete, but estimates from advocacy groups find there are about 6000 cases that have gone unsolved. >> developing news on what could be a major escalation in the middle east. israel is warning people to evacuate the city of rafah. amanda. this could signal a ground offensive by israeli forces is imminent. >> reggie aqui the u.s. and other world leaders have long discouraged an israeli offensive

brought that rain saturday morning. some feet of snow to the sierra. behind that front. we now have high pressure building in, and that's going to be the muscle maker of the forecast over the next 5 to 7 days, bringing that warming trend with us. we'll show you concorde for example, average daytime high this time of the year right around 75 degrees will be below that today but will be average tomorrow. then we see those temperatures really start to warm by the end of the week. we're talking likely 90 degree warmth by friday afternoon and several cities inland. so feeling a lot more like summer than spring. so here's a look at today's forecast. those temperatures at or just slightly below average inland will be in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees under sunny skies, low 60s around the bay shoreline and along the coast, we'll have partly cloudy conditions and temperatures, mainly in the mid 50s. so looking at the next three days, we have a chilly morning right now, giving way to sunny afternoon and then mild air starts to move in here. but by the middle of the week those temperatures will begin to take off. we'll

to south dakota. amanda, the new threat comes as millions of americans are already dealing with historic flooding. now.

>> stephanie, the rain has stopped, but rivers are still rising. this morning in texas, a four year old boy died during the flooding in fort worth over the weekend. his body was recovered by search and rescue crews after his family's car was swept away in fast moving water. parts of the state have received nearly two feet of rain. more than 200 people have been rescued outside houston due to the flooding. residents have started assessing the damage and cleaning up the mess. >> it's a kick in the in the in the knee. we'll just we'll just say that it's a terrible, demoralizing feeling. i mean, it ain't a fire, but it's close. >> second the tornadoes that could develop today could hit areas already devastated by previous storms. there could also be medium to large hail. oklahoma and nebraska have the highest risk of severe weather. but as we've mentioned, the threat extends all the way north to south dakota. back to you at the desk, reggie.

speak about the idea the bill would put new rules in place for businesses in hopes of boosting employment and cutting down on theft. opponents of the plan say it would end up hurting these businesses. supporters, including the prosecutors alliance of california, say the changes could help stop theft before it happens. >> one of the main deterrents from theft is that there are staff paying attention in the store to your activities in part, it's codifying, you know, some requirements that that i think, from our perspective, are a little heavy handed as far as you know, getting down into the granularity of how a business or store needs to operate. >> if this idea becomes law, grocery and pharmacy retailers would have to meet certain requirements, or they would have to get rid of their self checkouts. it would include increasing the number of staff watching over these machines. >> tomorrow apple will hold an event to introduce its new ipads. the cupertino based companies let loose event is expected to feature new ipad pro and ipad air models. the company is also expected to reveal a new

fair conditions, but temperatures. we do have some chilly spots. some of our coldest areas are starting out in the 30s, like danville right now, 39 degrees. we're at 37 in calistoga, napa right now, certainly feeling that chill this morning at 38 degrees. but we'll rebound nicely this afternoon. a huge change, a welcome change to the pollen index thanks to the rain. we had on saturday that helped to get rid of some of the pollen in our atmosphere. so trees, grass, pollen. now at low levels. if you recall last week these were at medium to high levels and people were really suffering because of the grass pollen that is now a lot better with low levels expected not only today but the next couple of days. so breathing a little bit easier. highs today we're in the 60s. couple of degrees below average for this time of the year. but we'll have a lot of sunshine. and your sunset coming at 805 this evening. speaking of this evening, the evening planner calls for a pretty tranquil conditions. a mix of sun and clouds throughout the evening, and then by sunset we'll have those temperatures slowly dipping into the 50s. later on

tonight. now overnight tonight. not as chilly as we are currently. we'll have temperatures more in the upper 40s to the mid 50s as we head into tuesday and tomorrow afternoons a little bit warmer than today, but temperatures really accelerate by wednesday and the end of the week. here's future tracker temperatures wednesday afternoon feeling quite warm 70s and 80s for daytime highs. and then those numbers get even higher by thursday. we're in the mid 70s in the city, low 80s in the east bay, mid 80s in the south bay and then by friday friday we're likely finding our first 90 degree days inland of the season with those temperatures feeling more like summer. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we have a lot of sunshine this week. those temperatures warm by thursday and friday, 80s and 90s by friday afternoon. away from the coast over the weekend. minor cooling. but those temperatures still stay above average with a lot of sunshine both days. guys >> an unusual rescue in colorado over the weekend. crews pulled an injured teen from an abandoned missile silo. deputies

say a group of teens were exploring abandoned tunnels on a rural property saturday, when one of them fell two floors down the shaft. rescuers had to rely on the 19 year old's screams to find him. they say it's one of the most dangerous rescues they've ever made. >> i don't even want to. i don't want to go back in there. >> the kid that we pulled out is probably lucky to be alive. >> the injured teen was airlifted to a hospital and is expected to survive another generation of falcons hatched on alcatraz island. >> these falcon chicks are the result of a uc berkeley conservation success. larry is the offspring of annie, who we just talked to last week. yeah, one of the falcons from the uc berkeley campus clock tower. we saw larry hatch during a live stream back in 2018. larry was identified on alcatraz by the bans placed on her legs as a chick. the national park service set up a new live cam to track these hatchlings progress, and they appear to be in good
