at the intersection of center road and east capitol expressway. one man was kild, another was hurt. >> abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has the very latest on the investigation. >> a deadly intersection in san jose claimed another life tuesday morning. >> multi-vehicle accident with three patients one patients unconscious, not breathing just before 730. >> san jose police say this red truck was speeding westbound on capitol expressway. the driver then ran a red light at the intersection of center road, just outside andrew hill high school. >> that red vehicle collided with a bicyclist and then collided with another white truck that was traveling northbound on capital expressway. they had the green uh- the bicyclist. unfortunately sustained a major injuries and was pronounced deceased there at the scene. >> sapd says the bicyclist was an adult and he is sadly the 17th traffic related death in san jose of 2024. the driver of the white truck was also injured. as for the driver who ran the red light, the driver of the red truck did try to flee at some point. >> it sounds like they were

taken into custody. i don't have the circumstances on what they were wanted for or who took them into custody just yet. >> debris was spread out in a several block radius as investigators work to put the pieces together of what happened during this deadly collision. although the crash came just before classes started at andrew hill, a district spokesperson told us students were not involved in the accident. however, the school still felt the impacts, with investigations shutting down surrounding streets that is in all directions on capitol and center road, and it's because the accident is pretty large considering the amount of vehicles that were hit related to this actual accident, and they're going to be closed for a significant amount of time. it was at least five hours before traffic began moving again on both sides of the busy intersection. center road and capitol expressway are identified as dangerous corridors in san jose due to the amount of lanes in the high speeds drivers use in today's deadly crash serves as a reminder in san jose, dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> in san francisco, two people are recovering after a wild chase through several different neighborhoods. police say this all start in the tenderloin

and an urban alchemy employee was hit near market and jones, the driver, kept going. also hit a 14 year old middle school stent. officers eventually caught up to the driver along the embarcadero. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has more. >> i saw the car coming back down francisco street, going very fast around 930 this morning, bonnie lumaj spotted a car speeding through her north beach neighborhood. it made a very sharp, fast turn. >> according to police, the driver hit a 14 year old as she crossed francisco street. authorities tell us she has a broken shoulder and cuts on her head. >> the class is in session, but the student was crossing from one side of the street to the other. >> but everything began just before 8 a.m. around 755 this morning. >> there was an individual driving a car, and he hit and injured an urban alchemy employee at market and jones. police say the driver struck the

person in the tenderloin. >> officers spotted the driver running red lights and driving recklessly more than an hour later, other officers spotted the driver again in the tenderloin. they initiated a pursuit toward north beach. police say that's when the driver hit a student by francisco middle school. the driver didn't stop and took off toward the embarcadero. he got stuck in traffic and officers detained and arrested him at embarcadero and green streets. >> our officers did a tremendous job and took him into custody, assistant chief lazar says. >> officers decided to pursue the suspect today because the driver was involved in a hit and run incident that creates that felony hit and run gives us the authority to pursue. >> of course, we have to weigh out the risk of harm to others. >> voters pass measure e in march, offering officers more latitude when it comes to car chases. chief lazer says that measure has not taken effect yet. supervisor aaron peskin weighed in. >> frankly, policing should be left to the police and their oversight body, but let's be

clear this is a very dense, congested city, and whether it's police officers or individuals driving at high speeds, it's very, very dangerous and has to be done very, very carefully. >> police say it's a good thing the driver was stopped and arrested and that more people weren't hurt. in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> in the east bay. sky seven was over a fire that damaged at least two buildings this afternoon in oakland. this is at the scene and the intersection of east eighth street and sixth avenue. you can see the flames shooting out of what appears to be a home on the corner. they also spread to the building next door. and as bad as this fire looks, the oakland police fire department says nobody was hurt. it's not clear if anyone was living inside either building. one of them was covered in graffiti and had boarded up windows. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> tonight, san francisco school leaders will talk about the next steps as sf unified is facing some serious budget issues.

there's a new report says the district could run out of money in about a year. school closures, as well as job cuts, are on the table. the district says it received notice friday that the state has downgraded its most recent budget evaluation from qualified to negative. the san francisco board of education will meet tonight to discuss the budget and the district's plan to move forward. that meeting starts at 630. abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez who spent many years covering education issues here in the bay, will join us on abc seven news at five, offering some perspective on the potential impact of what happens next. right now, teachers in san lorenzo rallying for higher wages. they just kicked off a march in front of the san lorenzo unified school district office, the san lorenzo education association says the high cost of living is really hurting the district when it comes to retaining and recruiting new teachers. they say the $24 million surplus in the district budget for next year could be used for teacher salaries. >> a new report is out from the alameda county district attorney's office that shows how things have changed since da pamela price took over. the

number of cases her office has taken and their outcomes are not part of the report. assessing work done in 2023, price's office says part of the reason is because her office is updating how it collects data and analyzes it. today's report focused the outreach efforts by the district attorney's office, along with some of the new partnerships that have developed over the past year. >> hopes for a ceasefire between hamas and israel. hope appears to be fading there today. israeli tanks seized control of gaza's vital rafah border crossing with egypt, and that's increasing fears of a full scale invasion. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the terms of the cease fire deal that were announced by hamas yesterday do not meet israel's core demands. talks continue in cairo, and u.s. officials say they're optimistic that some agreement can be reached. un secretary general antonio guterres urged the two sides to come to a deal. >> make no mistake, a full scale

push that's currently moving through california's legislature to reduce the speed limits in school zones across the state. >> should the street in front of city college in san francisco be ripped up to have new protected bike lanes installed? that is a proposal being discussed right now by the city's mta commissioners. the controversy plan to redo frida kahlo way would eliminate nearly 30 parking spots. the city college board of trustees has voted to oppose the project, saying the loss of parking would severely impact students who have no other choice other than to drive. supporters say the plan would make it safer for bicyclists and pedestrians. also improving conditions at muni bus stops. that meeting is underway right now. >> the latest battle over bike lanes. >> yes, there's plenty of them. >> all right, well, it is a nice week if you enjoy cycling or being outside for other reasons, and the temperatures are going to be going up week. >> a pretty spectacular weather shaping up here right now. the warming, the warm up that we've been talking about so much is underway already. let's take a look at the wind speeds right now. as you look at the

satellite radar composite image, that robust onshore flow that we've had for several days now continues. you can see the circulation around this area of high pressure building offshore, combining with the circulation around low pressure to our northeast to produce a rather brisk wind flow. right now at the surface, we have speeds up to 20mph in san francisco, 15 to 20mph, generally across the region, and we also have a wind advisory, by the way, that will be in effect from 1 a.m. to 11 a.m. tomorrow for the interior, north bay mountains, interior north bay valleys and over into the delta and the carquinez strait and much of northern sacramento valley as well. wind speeds up to about 40, gusts up to 45mph. right now, though, we're looking at a warm up that is not being inhibited by the wind flow we are four, five, six degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. more specifically, let's take a look at san francisco, where the temperature reading is 62. we have upper 60s at oakland, hayward and redwood city, 71 at san jose, 57 at half moon bay. looking northward right now, relatively cool, comparatively speaking at petaluma 66. but we have low to
