>> san francisco unified school district facing a financial pitfall. the proposals being made by the superintendent and floating docks that were packed with sea lions just last week, now sitting practically empty this morning. >> the reason some of the bay area's most famous residents had to be temporarily evicted. >> everybody's getting evicted out here. i mean, when they come for the sea lions. it's really something. welcome to wednesday, may 8th. >> the warm up is here. >> yes. so we're going to feel a lot warmer this afternoon. and then it turns hot around here tomorrow. here's a live look from sutro tower. the cameras bouncing around just a little bit this morning. we do have a wind advisory that is in effect for all of solano county this morning. parts of napa county and sonoma county, basically the hills of the north bay, because we do have an offshore wind right now that will continue through tonight into early tomorrow morning. the winds currently, you can see they're gusting anywhere from about 15 to 30mph. and what that is doing

before schools run out of cash. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is here. gloria, they did have a special meeting last night. and what came of that? >> they did. reggie. state officials had some tough words for the sfusd board, blasting both their personal and business practices. and the board of the san francisco unified school district gathered last night for a special meeting to discuss the district's budget problems. a new report from the california department of education highlights the financial strain and says that s.f, usd may run out of cash by the next school year. sf usd superintendent matt wayne introduced a presentation by state advisors on what steps they think the district needs to take. despite the difficulties, he says he is confident the district will be able to meet its obligations moving forward. >> tonight's presentation of our 2223 audit is both, i think, exemplifies what you're saying is both the progress we've made, but how far we need to go. >> so you have to recognize you

have a problem. >> just last week, the state gave new powers to some of their representatives that have been assigned to monitor s.f, usd, and those representatives are now able to overturn or stop financial decisions made by the superintendent or the school board in order to save some money. some of the actions that are being considered include things like laying off staff and also school closures. live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. new developments in the war between israel and hamas. the biden administration paused a shipment of 3500 bombs to israel last week because of concerns they would be used in rafah. that's where more than 1 million civilians are currently sheltering. amanda defense secretary lloyd austin is expected to testify on capitol hill today. yes, stephanie. >> defense secretary lloyd austin will testify today before a senate panel. he will likely be asked about u.s. policy. this comes as two republican senators said they were shocked and deeply concerned about reports the biden administration often

failed to notify congress before withholding ammunition to israel. u.s. officials are worried delaying weapons shipments could put israel's defense at risk. israeli forces launched a ground operation into rafah and have taken control of the palestinian side of the border crossing the shipment that was paused last week consisted of 2,000 pound bombs and 500 pound explosive. gives a senior administration official shared a statement with abc news. it reads in part, we are especially focused on the end use of the 2,000 pound bombs and the impact they could have in dense urban settings. as we have seen in other parts of gaza, we have not made a final determination on how to proceed with this shipment, a source tells abc news. other weapons transfers are being watched closely. it's part of a larger review of u.s. military aid to israel. back to you at the desk, amanda. >> thank you. hundreds of people gathered at uc berkeley's sproul plaza yesterday to protest israel's actions in rafah. the

plaza has served as the site of an encampment for the past two weeks. students continue to push the university to divest from companies that do business in israel. >> we are now 13 or 14 days into our encampments here at berkeley, and we are not here for fun and games. we are here to tell them that as long as you continue this annihilation of our people, we will continue to puncture power in its eye. >> a spokesperson for uc berkeley says it will not divest from israel. >> many universities are altering upcoming graduation plans amid security concerns involving recent protests. cal's big graduation is set to go on this weekend. the university says everything is going forward as they planned it. thousands of undergraduates will get their diplomas at california memorial stadium saturday morning. if you're going know that there is a clear bag policy and no banners or signs are allowed. at last check. sather gate is open, but the encampment at sproul plaza is growing and there are

barricades blocking access in some places. campus police are keeping an eye on the plaza. there are also private security guards. >> we're going to be prioritizing the ability of graduating students, their friends and their families to participate in and to enjoy one of the most meaningful days in their life. >> in addition to the big graduation, there are 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events around campus over the coming days. >> in southern california, officials at pomona college are preparing for protestors to interrupt graduation ceremonies this weekend. a camp went up monday morning right in front of the main stage. pomona was one of the first places where pro-palestinian encampments started, and some students were arrested there after entering an administration building. >> how long are you going to stay here until pomona college? >> divests. >> so even if that means commencement this sunday, you'll be here. yeah >> we will not rest. >> i can understand where they're coming from. but again,

another major tenet, according to the chronicle, google is leaving its 300,000 square foot space along the embarcadero next year. amanda. google is not totally leaving the city. >> yeah, correct. this is another result, though, of flexible schedules and working from home companies just don't need as much space. a spokesperson for google confirmed to the chronicle the company is leaving its huge office space at one market plaza. google has occupied that space since 2018, but its lease expires next april. one market plaza has two high rise towers and a smaller office building called the landmark. google will continue operating in the landmark, but we'll pull out of one market spear tower, the company tells the chronicle. it remains, quote, committed to our long term presence in san francisco. one market has lost other tenants, including visa and software company autodesk. >> back to you. amanda. thank you. you can now learn more about the life of legendary reverend cecil williams, a

collection of documents chronicling the late civil rights leader's work at glide memorial church have found a permanent home now at the san francisco library's main branch. they include decades of information about how glide served people in the tenderloin and the lgbtqia communities as well as williams speeches, sermons, and correspondence. williams died last month. his memorial service will be held may 12th at glide. doors open at noon and the ceremony will begin at 1:00. >> watch for more kids on the road this morning. this is national walk, bike and roll to school day. here's video from a past celebration with san francisco unified students. the idea is to get kids excited about modes of transportation that are good for our health, climate, and communities. many schools are hosting special events and activities today. >> all right. did you see this the past few nights near coit tower, a mysterious bright green and blue laser beam shooting skyward. it first popped up monday night and could be seen for miles. it does have the

necessary approval from the city as well as the faa, and we found out it's to celebrate the rsa conference, which is going on currently at the moscone center. according to mayor breed, it's the second largest conference to be held in the city, and the rsa conference has been with us for more than 30 years. >> they welcome over 40,000 people from all around the world to talk about cyber security. so we're so happy to welcome them back to san francisco. >> now, as for the beam, it's going to be around for one more night. >> pier 39 says so many sea lions visited the docks last week. they had to clear it out for repairs. this is video from just a week ago. look at them. wow, it is totally full. there's no room. not one inch. >> literally not one inch. >> we're told this is the biggest gathering they have seen in 15 years. in that time, pier 39 told us the floating docks got damaged. i mean, you know, these animals are not the lightest. so take a look at what

we saw just yesterday. certainly there are sea lions there, but nothing compared to what we saw. so the docks are fixed. the sea lions can come back. but the harbormaster says some of the sea lions may be a little bit cautious. i mean, you know, i would be too, if i got unceremoniously kicked out of my home, right? >> i want to see the video of them getting them off the dock. like, how did that all happen? >> i mean, some of them are massive, right? >> was in the middle of the night while they're sleeping, you know? right. surprised them. how did we not know? i don't know, i mean they're famously loud. >> yeah. you know, and feisty. >> they will fight. >> i just hope they come back. yeah. i want to see them. >> well, could you imagine being a tourist thinking, oh, i'm going to see this whole just area filled with them. >> yeah. where are they happened? >> you're like sorry, they were too big. we had to repair our docks. it's been quite some time, you know, 15 years. >> san francisco needs to make a decision. are we not popular enough or are we too popular? >> so true. all right, so the

heat is coming our way this afternoon. and this continues for the rest of the week, depending on where you are, this week will depend on how hot you get. meaning the warming gets underway here today. our coastal cities. our warmest day is going to be on thursday. by friday we'll see a little bit of a marine layer return. but inland cities, friday is your warmest day. so tomorrow we're well above average everywhere. but by friday we'll likely see 90 degree heat returning and our warmest areas inland. this morning we're talking about those warm winds. we have a wind advisory in effect for parts of the north bay and you can see clearly where we have those winds like brentwood, vallejo, fairfield, saint helena. we're in the 60s right now. other areas that see much lighter winds like san mateo, fremont, danville were much colder in the 40s. right now, that wind advisory continues through tomorrow morning. here's a look at the forecast today. inland sunny. we're going into the low 80s for daytime highs around the

bay shoreline. it is going to be a warm one. you'll feel that warmth pretty quickly today upper 70s under those bright conditions. and then along the coast we will find sunny skies and highs barely hitting about 6062 degrees. but it will feel nice today. highs across the region. it's above average today. a lot of sunshine. you don't need many layers. a light jacket this morning. then this afternoon we can get away with shorts and a t shirt. 74 in the city, 78 in oakland, 80 in san jose. about 82 in santa rosa. we'll watch those winds continue this afternoon. they get a little bit breezier, about 20 to 30mph. and then overnight, those winds will continue keeping us mild late tonight. and then tomorrow in the afternoon we'll start to see a bit of an onshore flow developing. and that's why the coast will start to cool off on friday. overnight tonight we'll find mild air once again mid 50s to the low 60s for overnight lows. tomorrow though is going to be a very warm day. we're approaching 80 degrees in the city mid and upper 80s inland. and then on friday there

worldwide developers conference next month. >> for the first time in its 114 year history, the boy scouts of america is choosing to rebrand entirely. this storied organization has been flooded by troubling claims and financial woes for years. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on what this historic shift could look like. >> boy scouts of america is changing its name to scouting america, saying it reflects their mission of inclusion. >> we want everybody to be feeling welcomed here, and this is why we need the name change. it's just a necessity. it had to happen. >> the silicon valley, monterey bay council consists of around 8000 scouts. a third are girls 5 to 21 years old. diane betts first joined bsa as a summer camp counselor and now she's the program director. she is inspired by the amount of growth and confidence scouts gain in the programs, enjoying going on a campout, learning how to cook their food over a grill, failing

testified they met at a celebrity golf outing in california when she was 27 and he was 60, and he invited her to dinner in his hotel suite. she said they talked for hours, and at one point she went to the bathroom and came out to find trump on the bed in his boxer shorts and t shirt. she said she was startled and despite being interrupted by trump's lawyer multiple times, testified in graphic detail about having sex with trump. trump's lawyer calling for a mistrial, saying daniels testimony was extraordinarily prejudicial. but the judge denied the request. a court transcript of a sidebar conversation now reveals trump was visibly agitated. judge juan merchan telling trump's attorney, i understand that your client is upset, but he is cursing audibly and he is shaking his head. it has the potential to intimidate the witness. trump's attorney responding, i will talk to him. >> they don't have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt they had they had sex. they have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the checks were cut, that

it was decided to put it in the book improperly. >> daniels describing the payoff a $130,000 hush money arrangement to trump's former fixer, michael cohen, just weeks before the 2016 election. she said the deal was motivated out of fear, not money. on cross-examination, trump's lawyer trying to paint daniels as a lying opportunist who hates trump. daniels saying this has cost her a lot and that she wants trump to be held accountable. it's a disaster. >> this whole case is just a disaster. >> trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in connection to this case. daniels testimony resumes on thursday, and when abc news washington. >> stay from the abc seven news i-team. the los angeles innocence project has filed a motion requesting new dna testing in the scott peterson case. remember, he was convicted in the 2004 killing of his wife, laci, and their unborn child. the la innocence project has taken up peterson's case, and

its death row and send prisoners elsewhere. last month, we showed you the sharp response from a town in southern california after men were sent to the prison there. now san bernardino county leaders are pleading with the state over this issue. elected leaders from the county and the city of chino say the california institute for men is old and in poor condition, with a history of escapes. they argue the overcrowded and underfunded prison can't handle potentially dangerous inmates. >> in a letter to governor newsom, we called on him to remove the condemned inmates already housed at c.i.m. effective immediately, the state agency overseeing prisons says it is following the law and the condemned inmates are being moved to the highest security facilities. >> san jose police made 87 arrests during enforcement over the cinco de mayo weekend. they also issued more than 150 traffic citations for various offenses, including illegal sideshow activity. the department gave us a recap of

highway traffic traffic safety administration show someone filed a complaint about a vinfast car with details seeming to match the pleasanton crash. the complaint was filed days after the crash. the writer says they are the owner of the car and loaned it to a coworker. the driver in the crash. the complaint also said they'd had prior issues with the car steering wheel going rogue. investigators have said they're looking into whether speed played a role here. vinfast told us at a statement, quote, vinfast is aware of this tragic accident in pleasanton and our hearts go out to the family. >> you may see more driverless cars as a part of public transit in contra costa county. this is the latest model for the guideway system. it's designed to connect pittsburg, antioch, brentwood and oakley. this new car was just unveiled at a transportation summit in san ramon. it will travel up to 30 miles an hour on a 28 mile circuit, with more than 50 boarding stations, loading docks . essentially, the system will connect east contra costa county

with more on the damage left behind. >> yeah, stephanie, multiple tornadoes touched down from michigan to ohio, ripping apart buildings and scattering debris. tens of thousands of people are without power. a fedex facility in michigan collapsed after a tornado passed through, trapping about 50 workers. there were no serious injuries, though the governor has declared a state of emergency. the national weather service issued the first tornado emergency on record for michigan michigan yesterday. the tornado also damaged homes and a strip mall. several residents took shelter in a local library. >> the man in charge of the library let everybody come in that wanted to come in, you know, to the library for safety. so we came home, got here, and they were pulling somebody out of the rubble over there in oklahoma. >> people took cover in this hampton inn as pieces of wood pierced the hotel's outer walls like spears. the severe weather killed at least one person in oklahoma. back to you, stephanie

square for a giveaway, the senate posted online. senate apologized for what happened this morning. toronto police are investigating a shooting outside the home of the rapper drake. it happened just days after a feud between drake and rapper kendrick lamar escalated. drake security guard was injured in this shooting yesterday morning. he's now in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. it's not known if drake was home at the time of this. officers say an unknown number of suspects approached the victim in a car and started shooting. >> that person was working, apparently as a security guard at the residence. he was standing outside of the gates in front of the residence when the shooting occurred. >> toronto police say they have video of the incident. no arrests have been made. investigators say it's too early to say if it's related to the ongoing feud between drake and kendrick lamar. the two have been releasing diggs diss tracks about each other almost daily
