corona, resulting in potentially wondrous displays in the overnight sky. a rare sight indeed. that's "nightline."

a fire tears through an oakland church just as parishioners were preparing for a friday night event, causing smoke to pour out of the building. good evening, and thanks for joining us, i'm larry beil. this fire started just before 730 tonight. that church, located on the corner of 27th and west streets in oakland. and from what we've gathered so far, the church has been around for decades. abc seven news reporter tara campbell, following this developing story, went to the church and spoke to a witness.

>> smoke billowing and flames ripping through saint andrew missionary baptist church in oakland, fire crews responding to the scene just before 730 friday evening. >> it eventually spread to the church and the church. there was a partial collapse in the residential property, and the church also suffered pretty severe damage on the charlie side of the building. in the rear, multiple crews making every effort to save the historic church with no reported injuries. there was no one living in the single family residence, and the pastor was in the church when the fire started, oakland fire chief damon covington noting it could have been a lot worse. crews did an outstanding job of keeping the fire to this building and half of the church. it really could have gotten a whole city block going had they not reacted so quickly. >> i was walking from the burrito spot down on what's that san pablo? and yeah, it was it was intense. >> matthew evans says he could see the flames from a distance. >> when i walked by, there was

still flames protruding out the building. i just hope everyone's okay. >> meanwhile, the fire chief says despite everyone being safe, there was a close call. there was a collapse to the rear of the building while the firefighters were inside the building, and we were just lucky that no one was got hurt, the chief says crews would stay on the scene until late friday night as an investigation into the cause of the fire gets underway. tara campbell, abc seven news and you'll find continuing coverage of this story on our website, abc seven news.com. >> it's right up there on the home page right now. a celestial spectacle tonight. and if you're lucky, you might be able to actually see the northern lights here in the bay area. one of the strongest solar storms in decades is behind this light show. it's already dazzling people all over the world. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez went to the chabot space and science center tonight, where people are hoping just to get a glimpse of it. >> look up the sky and just think like, wow, what is out there? >> families from all over the bay area drove to chabot observatory for a special night.

>> we just wanted to see the northern lights and see some planets. >> a strong solar storm could make the northern lights visible in parts of california. >> it's a lot of hype. we're so excited, i always wanted to take the kids to see it and we have our opportunity, like close to our backyard. so then why not? >> every friday and saturday, chabot astronomers provide free telescope viewing. chabot has three massive and historic telescopes where people can peek into the wonder of the universe. santa clara university associate professor of physics philip creston said, you won't need a telescope to see these rare lights for the eclipse. >> you know, you had to have certain special things available to you for the northern lights. if they're in the sky, you can see them from anywhere, creston said. >> the northern lights, which are officially called the aurora borealis, are spectacular when you can see them. and the reason this event is so exciting is

because it doesn't happen very often. >> there are a lot of things that happen in your life where you miss it. you go, oh, i'll see tomorrow. i'll do it tomorrow. this is not one of those things. san francisco resident alisa yao first saw the shimmering display on a trip to abisko, sweden, when it was -20 degrees outside. >> it was totally worth it and i almost cried and they look like green snakes in the sky. >> this photo was sent to one of the chabot astronomers from her sister, who lives in lexington, massachusetts. she took this photo around 8 p.m. eastern time. some suggest if you're looking up and you're not seeing anything, take your phone out or a camera and take a picture. >> because cell phone cameras are more sensitive to the light that will be in the northern lights than our eyeballs. >> at chabot space and science center. lauren martinez abc seven news this geomagnetic storm might be really cool to look at, but there are potentially some less cool effects. >> it could disrupt some communications and technology

like gps or appliances. >> i would say there's a good possibility, at least in some areas, that there may be some interruptions of cell phone service, tv transmission, uh- power outages, things like that. >> now, if you're worried about a possible power surge or something that could damage your devices, one suggestion is turn off the breaker rather than going around the house and plugging each and every device. all right, let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandyha patel. now for more on the northern lights and the first peek at your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandy. >> yeah, larry, it will be so cool if you can see the northern lights. i want to show you a live picture though, from our emeryville camera and this is a place you don't want to be looking from, which is san francisco, the coastline. because the fog is in. here's a view from santa cruz, where it has been foggy off and on. so here's a look at what you can expect uh- the northern lights best visibility up to the north of us northern california. now it is going to possibly extend

as far south as southern california. in terms of visibility, you might be able to see it down far, far south 1 to 4 a.m. tomorrow morning. move away from the bright lights, away from the coast where there's fog, and if you are using your camera, use long exposure. look towards the north , the northern horizon. you'll see a warm green glow. now in the morning there will be some fog 5060. temperatures rise at noontime. most noticeable inland where it's going to be another hot one by 4 p.m. in the 90s, 60s, coast side and then breezy along the coastline later on in the evening. larry, i'm going to be back to tell you how mother's day is shaping up. there will be some changes coming in just a few minutes. >> all right, satya, see you in a few minutes. on to politics now. president biden is in seattle tonight after a whirlwind fundraising trip here in the bay area. he was met by protesters during stops today in portola valley in palo alto. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes captured the sights and sounds and the message that people hoped the president would hear a whirlwind trip to the bay area for president joe biden, the

fifth just in the last year, the president's motorcade made its way to two campaign receptions in the south bay on friday, the first in portola valley at a fundraiser hosted by billionaire venture capitalist vinod khosla. >> the second fundraiser, hosted by former yahoo and google executive marissa mayer. >> we need actions from biden, which he could easily take. he could pick up the phone and things could change in a heartbeat. >> pro-palestinian demonstrators rallied outside both events and at one point blocked part of the motorcade there, calling on biden to stop sending military aid to israel. they told us they're also working to reach his donors. >> there are an unprecedented amount of billionaires and millionaires, and a lot of money is going to the democratic party. we want these donors to understand that we care about what's happening in palestine right now. >> but they weren't the only demonstrators lining the streets. some groups holding israeli flags wanted to thank biden for the work he's been doing for i do not support the israeli government's decisions. >> i support israel's existence and israel's right to defend

itself. but i think that right now the goal should be returning the hostages, and it looks like the best way to do that is the hostage deal. >> and you're happy with how the president has approached that? i am, despite the protests, experts say the fundraiser will be critical to his campaign. >> it's a cliche, but we are the nation's piggy back for these campaigns. there's a lot of people here with a lot of money and a lot of interest in who wins these elections. >> and as you saw, you had protesters on both sides of the issue out here as it relates to biden's handling of the israel-hamas war. but you also had just simple onlookers looky loos out here with american flags waving, wanting to see the president's motorcade coming through. so a lot of different perspectives out here along the president's route here in the bay area right now in palo alto. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> president biden's visit brought out a lot of families and visitors to san francisco's marina green and those who showed up for a glimpse said they could not have asked for better weather. 15 month old colette vicknair and her parents, they were out and about

when they saw air force one arrive. >> it was amazing. we had no idea it was going to happen, but we were on a walk and we were here and saw all these helicopters come down, and it's just incredible. i mean, it makes me teary eyed when you see it. >> this was mr. biden's second campaign fundraising visit to san francisco in recent months in the east bay. today, uc berkeley's law school graduation ceremony was interrupted several times by pro-palestinian chants from people in the crowd. >> professor sayeed has been teaching at berkeley law since 2009. >> the commencement at the greek theater continued despite a controversial mobile billboard outside the event. now times today, protesters could be heard interrupting dean erwin chemerinsky. many of the graduates said they expected some disruptions due to pro-palestinian protests and encampments on campus. the last few weeks. >> respect, respect students right to, you know, have their

voice be heard, especially in, you know, public forum. this is a public university. >> in the end, more than 600 graduates picked up their diplomas today. now tomorrow, thousands of undergraduates will take part in graduation at memorial stadium. and there are 90 other graduation related ceremonies and events taking place around the campus in the coming days. the biden administration, criticizing israel for its failure to protect civilians in gaza tonight, but stopping short of saying that israel broke international law. the new report by the state department says that israel's use of weapons provided by the u.s. likely violated humanitarian laws, but the first of its kind assessment did not uncover enough evidence to go further. ceasefire talks in cairo, meanwhile, ended today. no deal the israeli military is stepping up operations in the city of rafah. it comes after mr. biden halted a weapons shipment over the invasion. there happening now part of highway 37, just closed in the north bay so caltrans crews can make repairs.

it's the second to last weekend of construction there. the closures on the eastbound lanes from sears point to vallejo. it is the same stretch that shut down several weekends last month for repaving. and you can see the detour there. we've highlighted in green. caltrans would have started the eastbound work last weekend, but rain forced them to postpone that road set to reopen by 5 a.m. monday. san francisco bay ferry planning a significant expansion that would include switching to an all electric fleet by the year 2050. our media partners at the san francisco standard report. it's also looking at multiple locations to add service, especially in the east bay. some possibilities are berkeley, martinez, pittsburg and antioch. well, it started with a storage facility and led to this, a big raid in the north bay, california, going to be facing some difficult choices. a huge budget deficit ahead. the one thing the governor is promising he will not do and they're dancing in the streets tonight. we'll have the return of the bhangra and beats night

water storage in san francisco. public health nurses are set to hold a strike authorization vote next week. they're concerned about what they call inadequate and unsafe staffing levels at the city's hospitals and clinics. the public health department says 166 nurses have been hired since december, and they have plans for 50 more sf runs. sf general and laguna honda hospitals. a new push tonight for a major overhaul of melatonin and how it's used after a report found that thousands of kids ended up in the er because they took too much of it. the supplement is meant to help people get to sleep, but health leaders are concerned too many kids are taking it without their parents knowledge, a cdc report shows. from 2019 to 2022, 11,000 children ended up in the emergency room after taking melatonin without supervision and now a trade group for the supplement industry is pushing new voluntary guidelines for melatonin. >> it has a central nervous system effect. it makes them,

to upper 80. here's a look at the forecast for san francisco for mother's day 8:00 in the morning in the 50s, with some fog coming up into the low 60s. later in the afternoon in san jose, going from 60 at 8 a.m. to 80 degrees by 4 p.m. and napa is looking good from the 50s in the morning, with some areas of fog all the way to the 80s. by 4 p.m, high pressure is still the controlling factor. that's what brought us the warm weather today. or hot weather inland. that ridge will stay put, but it is going to weaken ever so slowly. so we are expecting those temperatures to slip by. mother's day right now on live doppler seven, we do have fog visibility is less than a quarter mile in half moon bay, petaluma down to five miles. so be careful tomorrow morning if you have early plans. 50s to 70s right now. still hanging on to the heat from earlier in the day. as we start off the day, there will be some fog by noontime. the fog sitting near the coast, but inland areas are warming up under sunny skies in the 80s and by the afternoon we're already talking about some 90s inland. so it's really going to be a summer like spread. your

people don't realize we make sausages here. we case them seven days a week. we go through hundreds and hundreds of pounds of meatballs and sausages. we have meatball gigantes. they're giant. they're land on a table. we're never a one-stop shop. you're always reinventing yourself, and you can become old very fast in our industry. so we'll never get old. it's a timeless restaurant, but at the same time, we're always ahead of the curve. so, i'm a 13-time world pizza champion. early in my career, i won in pizza acrobatics, doing kind of like what a harlem globetrotter does with the basketball. you know, we do with the pizza. then i started focusing on food, and i won a number of world titles in cooking in naples and portugal and the u.s. one on the food network. i'm a two-time food network gold medalist and a four-time guinness book of world record holder. so when it comes to pizza, i've kind of done everything in that. and there was a competition back in the day. i kind of was always about it, so...
