tv   Full Court Press  ABC  May 11, 2024 10:00am-11:01am PDT

10:00 am
swooshing) - [narrator] "full court press" is presented by state farm. like a good neighbor, state farm is there.
10:01 am
(intense music) (producer speaking faintly) - before a game i always take a nap, a pregame nap, that's a must, and then review the scatter report and just go out there and start stretching, but the pregame nap is a must. - i always eat four hours before. i don't really listen to music before games 'cause i'm already so hyped up. i don't need to get more hyped up. i get taped two hours before i usually get on the court. i just have a routine and i follow that pretty good. - i like to take a shower. i feel like they help me relax and just get prepared for the game. - [narrator] and now "full court press," presented by state farm. - i'm excited, honestly, i almost like, like i woke up and i was like kind of honestly like giddy, like i don't know, like the kind of like the first day of school feeling, you know when you wake up and you're like,
10:02 am
"oh my gosh, like it's gonna be so exciting today." like i always get very excited for games, especially home games, but obviously this one is just a little different. there's gonna be like an extra buzz in the air i feel like, so i'm excited, just to do it at home and have my family there, and i don't know, it's gonna be cool. i think my teammates are excited too. and like we don't really talk like as a team about like records and this type of stuff, but coach bluder's kind of have been a little bit different about this one. - [commentator] historical night. carver-hawkeye arena always has some buzz to it, but a lot of extra energy in the building today. (fire swooshing) here comes clark. how will she go for history? - what's unique about this moment in women's basketball? they can no longer hold us back. - [commentator] my goodness! a show-stopping highlight.
10:03 am
- ****, i like that. - [commentator] this crowd is electric. it feels like a football saturday. - [commentator] this is the 11th time, folks, they've sold out on the road this season. - [commentator] if you build it, they will come. - [commentator] all things are possible when caitlin clark has the basketball. got it, yes! (crowd cheering) - [commentator] the all-time leading scorer in women's college basketball. - she's the best basketball player i've ever seen. - [anne] now starting for the iowa hawkeyes, catie clark! - these are the moments i've worked for. i'm meant to be here. - you gotta get a picture of this. - [brent] i don't think anybody can fully grasp the pressure that she feels. - [coach staley] kamilla's why is her family. - i left brazil just chasing my dreams. that's my biggest sacrifice, just being away from my family. (janete speaking in foreign language)
10:04 am
(fans cheering) - kiki rice. - kiki! kiki! kiki! - [holly] she came to ucla for an opportunity to do something that's never been done before, a women's national championship here. - [commentator] but kiki rice could be in one. - ucla, we're winning and competing at the highest level is an expectation. - don't point fingers at anybody else. point it right back at you and do something different. - never underestimate anybody. - you gotta **** play, kamilla. - honestly, sometimes it feels like, is it all worth it? - let's go. - it's not gonna work. - [kamilla] every one wants to be the number one team. - fight! fight! - there is definitely a responsibility for me to lead the women's game. keep it close, make everybody entertained. hardest part about being caitlin clark, having to feel like you're always like on. (dramatic music) - i don't think you actually know what it takes until you're there. - if you want something, you gotta make sacrifice for it. - [commentator] cardoso for three! makes it in!
10:05 am
- [coach staley] it's a heavy load. it's only bestowed on those who can handle it. (dramatic music) - whoa! (players yelling) (upbeat music) (lively marching band music) (players cheering) - deuces. deuces, cop. - everybody's just so happy. they end up in the back. - oh my god, this is actually nuts. - my heart's racing. (lively marching band music continues) - let's go! (crowd cheering) - playing for so much today. playing for women's basketball across the country. this is the biggest women's basketball game ever attended, ever. it'll probably never be broken, all right?
10:06 am
you guys are part of that. enjoy it. (players cheering) (intense music) - [announcer] 55,646 people watching this basketball game. the all-time attendance record for women's basketball set today, october 15th, 2023 at kinnick stadium. (crowd cheering) - i'd describe this moment in women's basketball really as, you know, i don't know, unprecedented. - [announcer] number 22, caitlin clark! (crowd cheering) - [commentator] i think it's safe to say technically by volume, the roar for caitlin clark was the loudest roar in the history of women's basketball. (intense music) we're underway in kinnick stadium. and caitlin clark pushing now. clark with a difficult layup and won.
10:07 am
- this gigantic audience at a football stadium. that was something that if you've been following the game a long time, you appreciated just what that meant, to have that many eyes on the women's game. - [commentator] caitlin clark, a marvelous passer. - you know this is a once in a lifetime experience and you're walking in it, you're living it. (crowd cheering) - [commentator] caitlin clark unloads! - caitlin finally hit a bomb. i mean 'cause it's kind of hard with the wind. that whole stadium just was like boom. - [commentator] from the inside. (crowd cheering) - those people there all the way down on the other end, they can't see if the ball's going in the hoop, but they just wanna be part of the rush. - [commentator] there it is, an assist for clark. triple double. it's been said before, but what can't caitlin clark do? 94 to 72, your final, iowa wins the crossover at kinnick.
10:08 am
(crowd cheering) - that will go down as one of the best moments of my career. - thank you so much, you're my idol. (kids yelling) - without caitlin, i don't know if that game happens. women's hoops are an all-time high right now and i think caitlin helped take us there. - thank you, thank you, appreciate it. thanks for coming. - caitlin was already a really popular and well-known figure in women's basketball. what i think happened in 2023 was the entire country was introduced to caitlin clark. (dates clicking) (crowd cheering) - [announcer] a sold-out crowd on the edge of their seat here today. - last year it was late in the regular season and it was a crucial game against indiana for seeding in the big 10 tournament. - that game was on espn, it was game day, it was sold out. there was so much excitement around that game.
10:09 am
- [commentator] the hoosiers lead it, 85-83. - early in the fourth quarter i said, "she's gonna hit a big shot in this game." lo and behold, it happened to be the last shot of the game. - [commentator] and looking is clark, she fires and goes! she hit it! (crowd cheering) all things are possible when caitlin clark has the basketball. - i knew in that moment that i was watching something special. - it just was 7-year-old caitlin in the driveway. her look and her response is exactly what has played out in our driveway so many times. - couple times. (joyful music) we used to play this game at home where
10:10 am
brent would get on the mr. microphone and we'd flash the lights and practice running out of the mud room. - [anne] ladies and gentlemen. - my mom would be like, "starting at guard." - [anne] now starting for the iowa hawkeys, catie clark! (family cheering) - i would run out and do a lap and so it's like honestly like i've dreamed of this moment since like i was a little kid. (crowd cheering) - [commentator] crowd is on its feet and we are ready for the first round in the ncaa tournament. clark will fire. it's hit from three! (dramatic music) - caitlin took it to a whole different level during the ncaa tournament. - [commentator] clark firing again, oh my! caitlin clark, a showstopper. (crowd cheering) - caitlin is playing the game differently than we have ever seen. we have never had a player who takes
10:11 am
and makes logo 3s like she does. (basketball clunking) (crowd cheering) - as a competitor, you're just like, you know, this is the moment, this is what you've worked for. i'm meant to be here. but also, once you make a few shots, the basket looks super big so that that always helps too. - [commentator] look at clark. yes. - caitlin, with the steal and the stick. - march madness, it's a nationwide celebration and the fact that she was so good in the tournament captured people's attention. - you wanna watch the best shooter in college basketball, men or women, it's caitlin clark. - she's the show. everything is caitlin clark. - she is the biggest brand in college sports right now. - we're sitting there together after the game and her phone, like every time you refresh on instagram, it's like another 10,000 followers, 20,000.
10:12 am
she's like, "oh, you know, tom brady just followed me. this is crazy." and i'm like, "yeah, it is." - [commentator] far. again! she's almost fictional. a 40 point triple double. - i always said i want to take this team to the final four, so there was probably the most pressure i've ever had in my life. - [commentator] for the first time since 1993, iowa is headed to the final four. (crowd cheering) - here they are on the biggest stage at the women's final four. on paper, no one in the world thought iowa was going to upset south carolina. - [commentator] and we are underway as south carolina wins the tip. - the expectation from all fans and those of us in the media was that south carolina was going to win a national championship.
10:13 am
- [commentator] clark gets a clean look and knocks it down. clark has the mismatch, all caitlin clark. now you see her, now you don't. - it's just one of the most incredible performances i've ever seen. (crowd cheering) - [commentator] a deep one. you bet! (crowd cheering) and the mythical mastery of caitlin clark continues. iowa has conquered south carolina. - that iowa team upset that experienced, dominant team that had won wire to wire all season long. it's one of the greatest upsets we've seen in the tournament. - let's go, baby. (hand banging) oh yeah! (players cheering) - it was just crazy like we're going to the national title game.
10:14 am
- [commentator] and the national championship game is underway. angel reese facilitating again, flau'jae johnson lays it in, plus the foul. poole going for the dagger, you bet! lsu has captured its very first national championship. (pensive music) - instead of the focus being on what was really a great game, social media was stirring after the controversy surrounding lsu player angel reese's celebration that mimicked a previous celebration by iowa player caitlin clark. - [speaker] excessive celebration in her face after the game is over. - i'm too hood, i'm too ghetto, y'all told me that all year, but when other people do it, y'all don't say nothing. - [press] there's a lot blown up on twitter about angel reese following you around, pointing to her ring finger and taunting you. - honestly, i have no idea.
10:15 am
i was just trying to get to the handshake line and shake hands and, you know, be grateful that my team was in that position. (pensive music) - the media was trying to create a circus out of racial things, out of trying to make hatred come up and she just wouldn't let it happen. - that's the only thing people wanted to talk about when we just went on this like magical run and united so many people and that like was frustrating to me. i want my legacy to be the impact that i can have on young kids and the people in the state of iowa. i hope i brought them a lot of joy this season. i hope this team brought them a lot of joy and i was just that young girl so all you have to do is dream and you can be in moments like this. i'm a competitor.
10:16 am
i wanna be in the national title game again. it's like you wanna end it the right way.
10:17 am
10:18 am
(crowd cheering) - south carolina started their season in paris, just representing on one of the biggest stages in the world. - the nba, nfl, they take their team overseas and play a regular season game and i always thought why couldn't we do it? i think it's super cool that we're in this movement where we're wanted. - [commentator] bonjour, everybody, so happy to be with you for the start of this women's college basketball season. what a way to start it here in paris, the first game ever played here for the ncaa. a top 10 matchup that features south carolina. a team that has gone to three straight final four. last year sent five players to the wnba. this year, five newcomers, three freshmen.
10:19 am
- with this team, i think we heard a lot of stuff. oh my god, south carolina's not gonna be good. south carolina is rebuilding. they lost too many players. - the expectations for kamilla are really high. you lose aaliyah boston, the number one pick in the wnba draft, you lose your starting five. this is your time to shine. - i told her this, i said, "kamilla, you're the difference maker." (announcer speaking in foreign language) - i was like, "okay, i'm starting for south carolina." that was like the most nervous i felt before a game in my life. ball went up for the tip. we all like loosened up and it's like, "okay, we got this. let's just play." - [commentator] rejected. kamilla cardoso with the block. wiley dumps it inside, cardoso the catch in the finish. - if you can't make a clear pass to a guard,
10:20 am
go to kamilla, okay? i want kamilla. you just go. - [commentator] a little floater from powell, while cardoso, just impossible to stop. - you could have another 6'7" person that has great hands, or you can have a big that is mobile. there's not a big that has all of it, and that's who kamilla is. (crowd cheering) and won. - [commentator] south carolina putting on a parisian show. - ****, i like that. - [commentator] south carolina so impressive and the gamecocks win at over notre dame 100 to 71. (crowd cheering) - if we're gonna win a national championship, she is the key, it's a heavy load. when you decide to pick up and leave your family,
10:21 am
it's a huge sacrifice and i know she doesn't wanna let her family down. (birds chirping) (gentle music) - i grew up on a bad part of brazil and you either have ways, you make it out, or you stay on the hood. (pensive music) i came from a poor family. it was me, my mom and my sister. my granddad and my grandmother passed away when they was really young so my mama had to give up on her school to go to work. she started working in a spice stand. (janete speaking in foreign language) (janete speaking in foreign language)
10:22 am
(janete speaking in foreign language) (janete speaking in foreign language) (birds chirping) (kamilla and family speaking in foreign language) (kamilla and family speaking in foreign language)
10:23 am
- i left brazil to chase my dreams, which was play basketball in a high level, get a better education, give my family a better life. - the first time that i heard about kamilla was this blog in brazil. i saw a picture of her and they were talking about this 6'4" kid, like 14 years old. - he came to me, he was like, "oh my gosh, you're super tall, you're very talented." and then he talks to my mom about the united states. - i opened their minds like talking about high school and whatever like us could provide to her. - he was like, "there's a coach in there that really wants her. she thinks she's really good. she thinks she got a lot of potential." (janete speaking in foreign language) my mom was a little nervous
10:24 am
because i was like 14 at the time. i didn't speak no english. i was moving to a whole different country. i didn't know nothing about the culture. on the first two months that i left home, it was the hardest months for me. i wasn't eating, i lost like almost 20 pounds. i was very sad, but like i used to call them every day and they just used to tell me like, "you just gotta stay strong and continue to chase your dreams." (jessica and kamilla speaking in foreign language) (jessica and kamilla speaking in foreign language) i feel like if you wanna be great in life, you're gonna have to make some sacrifices and that's what i did and that's my biggest sacrifice, just being away from my family.
10:25 am
just hug me on my worst days whenever i'm feeling down. - let's go. come on, come on. kamilla, you see this? right here, let's make this adjustment. you know how we're just coming here. come right here. yes, yes, yes, kamilla. - [kamilla] money and basketball is what is gonna give my family a better life. - [coach staley] let's go. good. - my mom not having to work anymore. just taking care of them the way that they took care of me when i was younger. - [coach staley] yes, kamilla! yes, kamilla! don't give it up!
10:26 am
10:27 am
(traffic humming) (shoes squeaking)
10:28 am
- score. yes, man! - my first scholarship offer was in 8th grade. it started feeling crazy my freshman year, maybe like 40 college coaches just lined up on the side of our game. my dad always thought it would be a good idea for me to kind of just look at yale academically. my brother goes there, both my parents went there, but i always knew that i wanted to go to a school that valued basketball more. - good job. - safety. hey, this is real. let's go. - she is seeking out greatness. she came to ucla for an opportunity to do something that's never been done before, a women's national championship here. - [newscaster] ucla, the ncaa champions for 1967. - [newscaster] i believe at our best we're the finest basketball team that has ever played college basketball.
10:29 am
- [newscaster] john wooden with his 10th championship in 12 years. - every time before games we walk in a tunnel and we walk by like all of the national championship banners on the men's side, and obviously that's super cool, but it also is like, "okay, we wanna have that for the women's program." - you have this really talented deep group of sophomores. they all took a chance on ucla. - honestly, they're all my best friends. hey! you have christeen. you have londynn always bringing the laughs, jokes. lina, little more quiet. - hey! - gabriela jaquez was the co-mvp of the mcdonald's all-american game, along with kiki. and then the freshman class got bigger with the addition of lauren betts who transferred from stanford. combining her with kiki gave ucla, the number one and number two overall recruits
10:30 am
in the same recruiting class. (players clapping) - what are four words we said we would protect this year? - selflessness. - selflessness - consistency. - consistency. - toughness. - toughness. - togetherness. - togetherness. - the goal is to win at ucla. i valued going somewhere and being part of the first group to win at that school. - bruins on three, one, two, three. - [all] bruins! - i think one of the reasons why kiki was comfortable coming to a place like ucla where she was gonna build something new was because she did it at sidwell friends. - sidwell friends is a independent school in dc, well known for i think how academically rigorous it is and for educating the children of presidents, not so well known for athletic prowess. at least it wasn't. it's a different story today. - she turned it into one of the best programs
10:31 am
in the country. (crowd cheering) - [commentator] the mvp of this tournament is gonna be kiki rice. (players cheering) - kiki had this dream senior year where just everything went right. she just ran the table on i think every top award. - not only are you the state gatorade player of the year, you're the gatorade national player of the year. (players cheering) - i've had a ton of great coaches, trainers, mentors, but my dad, i think, he's just taught me so much of what i know from a basketball standpoint and just the mental side of the game. (basketball pounding) - give me one! (laughing) obviously as a parent you pinch yourself. i get one more. when she was born, it was really important for me to try to create the environment where she had no questions about what she could achieve.
10:32 am
ooh. are you egging on the crowd. (laughing) bring it on. aah. - kiki has a lot of basketball influence in her life. her father played basketball in college. she also has a cousin, allan houston. - [commentator] it's houston looking for 50. he's got it! (crowd cheering) - and she has a great uncle who played for the harlem globe trotters. growing up in dc, she had the unique upbringing in that she was around a number of people that were in really interesting positions politically. kiki's aunt, susan rice, held a number of interesting political appointments. - americans have forged opportunity out of crisis. - [andrea] she was ambassador to the united nations and she was president obama's national security advisor. - all right, game time. good shot. - when kiki was really young, johnny had the opportunity
10:33 am
to play pick-up basketball with president obama, which was what a thrill. - through my relationship with my sister, every few weeks we would be told president wants to play and the games were highly competitive. one of the most special things for me was that i was able to bring kiki to watch. - i remember like kinda watching the game. we were also trying to like dribble the basketball, kind of play on the side, and i don't think i really like recognized how special that was. - president obama follows her, you know, and takes some interest and always asks me about how she's doing and so forth. - nobody hurt. - yeah. - especially me. - exactly. - i remember taking her down to one of our neighbor's places before we had like a little basket in front of our house and i remember her taking that first shot.
10:34 am
okay, again, again, again, again. hey, come on, come on, shoot. little did we know that that was gonna become her passion, especially with that release. (family laughing) (ball clonking) - [andrea] we have a really close family, but really we kind of push each other and expectations are high. - ah! sometimes i feel some pressure just because a lot of people in my family have done really incredible things. honestly, sometimes it feels like too much or is it all worth it, but then it always come back to like i'm doing what i love to do. (crowd cheering) - [commentator] full court play, but kiki rice gets the end one. i don't know much more you could say about how she can score on every level on the court.
10:35 am
kiki rice, 22 points for the sophomore phenom. ucla will stay undefeated, moving on to 5-and-0 on the season. - i've had so many incredible opportunities because of basketball and i realized like no, i wouldn't trade that ever.
10:36 am
10:37 am
(players chatting, clapping) - we're acting like it's so easy to make it. five, two, one. we talked about with pressure, breathe, right? be positive, appreciate the opportunities. okay, now it says the next step may not be an issue for some but could be inconceivable to others. we've gotta face our challenges head on. forgive give yourself from the start for any setbacks that may occur because no one is perfect. one of the worst things we can do is stick our head in the sand. (quiet music) - [commentator] caitlin clark thinks she has
10:38 am
a lane to the rim and sundell says, "i don't think so." - [background speaker] one, two, three. - [commentator] clark, a long three, it's short once more. the long rebound to walker and she's gonna go up with it. k state takes down iowa. - i think our inexperience really showed in a lot of areas in that game, but i think it was a good wake-up call for our group. - that first loss, you know, it's always a stinger, but we just kept going to work and, you know, understanding it's a marathon and not a sprint, and i think caitlin led the charge with that. (water splashing) you gotta get the shot of the city, my city. so in des moines, this is where i grew up. my mom worked at that building right over there, which is crazy, and i grew up going to like so many games at wells fargo arena.
10:39 am
they were the iowa energy at the time. they're now the iowa wolves, so that's where the state basketball tournament was. that's where i played a few times during my high school career, so it's cool that we we're coming back here to play a doubleheader and i'm expecting a lot of hawkeye fans today. - [commentator] a sold-out crowd ready to see superstar caitlin clark play in her hometown as number four iowa faces cleveland state. - caitlin is an iowa kid and that means a lot in this state. she could have gone anywhere to play. she chose to stay in iowa and she had big dreams. (crowd cheering) - [announcer] caitlin clark. (crowd cheering) (pensive music) - [commentator] and we're underway here in the iowa capitol. caitlin clark, wakeley getting a look at knocking down the first three she sees. clark in transition, yes. (crowd cheering)
10:40 am
- i just don't think people really understand how important home, her family, her community really is to her. (pensive music continues) - many people don't really know this, but i actually committed to notre dame first. i started first getting recruited in 7th and 8th grade. i didn't even really know about it 'cause my parents were like, this is not the stuff a 7th-grader should be thinking about. - no way, like she's in 7th grade. we got a long ways to go on this. - my parents would tell me like when you get home after school, make sure you're the first one to get the mail every day, so i would like take the mail and hide it. - [commentator] she's diana taurasi, she's steph curry. she's insert-great-shooter. it's unbelievable.
10:41 am
- it's a lot of pressure having to choose and decide where you're gonna spend four years of your life. we're catholic and every person like idolizes notre dame, like that's just what you do. i told muffet mcgraw, one of the greatest coaches of all time, that i'm gonna play for her. when i took my official visit, i just knew like something wasn't, something wasn't sitting right with me. so i tell my parents and i'm like, "i think i'm gonna switch to iowa," which was hard, like i didn't, like i was scared. like i'm 17 years old and now i have to call coach mcgraw and tell her that i'm not coming. and i remember sitting in my bed and i'm like sweating. i'm like, "oh, this is so bad." but i really loved the idea of being close to home. (crowd cheering) - i was at a restaurant eating with my husband. when she called, i stepped outside to take the phone call.
10:42 am
i tried to hold it down a little bit, but then i went back in and we ordered a bottle of champagne. (buzzer buzzing) - [commentator] the shot goes as time expires, but never in doubt it is iowa, 104-75 is the hawkeye victory. (somber music) - i'm really just thankful that i was able to come back here and play in front of a lot of family and friends and you know, i thought we played really well. yeah, it's just really exciting. i had chills when we ran out of the tunnel. this is what i've known my whole life. no matter where i go, iowa will always be a warm, welcoming place that i've loved my entire life. (somber music continues) (crowd cheering in background)
10:43 am
(traffic humming) - hi, guys. - yes, yes. - hi. choosing what college you're gonna go to is one of the hardest decision for students. - [fan] y'all take care of business tonight. - all right, thank you. - yes, sir. (basketball pounding) (all cheering) - i got like over 50 offers and i knew i wanted to come to south carolina, but honestly i was scared. i used to second guess myself like, am i good enough? i was like, okay, maybe i should just take the easiest route, which was going to syracuse. - cardoso. - when she was a freshman, i went and watched her play for syracuse in the acc championship and i was just like, "oh my gosh. kamilla cardoso is unstoppable." here she is as a freshman as really
10:44 am
of the best players in the country already. - [commentator] the putback, syracuse got it. - i was there for a year. that's when i realized i still want to be in south carolina right now. when i talked to coach staley on the phone, i was like, okay, i wanna play for her. she sounds like she's gonna help me accomplish all of my dreams and that's when i was like, "okay, i'm gonna transfer." - she could see that dawn staley was putting players in the wnba. a'ja wilson had just come out, was the number one pick and a terrific post player. she could see what she was doing with aaliyah boston and her as a post player. - [commentator] aaliyah boston, utter and complete dominance. - [commentator] yeah, one of the most dominant players in college basketball. - she wants to be the number one draft pick in wnba and i think her coming here, she really had true examples of how to do it. - [announcer] with the first pick, the indiana fever select aaliyah boston.
10:45 am

(upbeat music) - the beginning of the season was the warning shot to the rest of the country, like you know, ucla's here and ucla's ready to play. they beat yukon relatively handily. they beat arkansas. they keep just like mowing these teams down. kiki rice is the dynamic floor general. - [commentator] spin move by kiki rice, my goodness. - her work ethic, her talent, her selflessness. she's such a good mind and i think that makes everybody else around her better. - [commentator] and ucla, the second-ranked team
