dramatic scenes happening right outside this uc berkeley building. tonight, police officers clearing out pro-palestinian protesters for occupying a university hall. it's just the latest step in widespread uc system unrest. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. berkeley has been the epicenter of social and political protests for decades, and what we have seen tonight has certainly been the very same. >> yeah. the intensity flared up again this evening across the

street from the historic people's park. that's where officers began moving in to remove the protesters who had taken over the building about 24 hours before. >> abc seven news reporter tara campbell has the latest on the protester arrests. >> genocide is happening here. pro-palestinian chants rang out thursday as police arrested protesters occupied an abandoned building at uc berkeley. police making 12 arrests, clearing a building at the anna head alumni complex around 830, a school spokesperson saying protesters were arrested for trespassing, breaking and entering and vandalism. meanwhile, police work to control a couple of dozen protesters gathered at the scene, some tense moments as police tried to push back the crowd. protesters didn't want to speak on camera, but we did speak with a berkeley resident. >> it's going to keep happening until, there's a ceasefire or the war ends. berkeley is a traditionally a protest city. so i think it's going to be a lot of berkeley incidents, just throughout the summer. never

stop me. >> police eventually dispersing the crowd. protesters insisting they will be back. tara campbell abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow. the man convicted of breaking into nancy pelosi's home and attacking her husband, paul, will be sentenced in federal court. prosecutors want david depape put away for 40 years. his lawyers are asking for a 14 year sentence. there are two clearly different opinions, with the federal government arguing this was an act of terrorism. while the defense could argue depape needs mental help, he's not someone that needs to be locked up. >> if he's willing to go to treatment. so i think that's going to be the competing narrative in that courtroom. how much of mr. depapes mental health issues played a role in this case, and what the judge does with that in terms of fashioning a sentence that sends the message that we need to protect american democracy. but at the same time recognizes that

perhaps mr. depape could be returned to society if he expresses remorse and he undergoes treatment. >> now, keep in mind depape also faces a trial on state charges. what happens tomorrow in federal court could very well trickle down to that case. >> well, certainly the jury is being selected in the state case, and they're now going to know that mr. depape could be facing 40 years in federal prison. >> depape faces attempted murder charges in the state case. a conviction could carry a sentence of life in prison. now, we've been committed to covering this case ever since it broke in those early morning hours of october 2022. be sure to stay with us for all the updates that will come tomorrow. until then, you can catch up on the entire time line of this case. it's up for you on our website, abc7 news.com.

and we're getting dramatic video out of houston tonight where severe storms rolled through, triggering tornado warnings and doing all kinds of damage. buildings in the downtown area had their windows blown out and the wind toppled trees. as you can see, with at least one landing on top of a car. an eerie scene inside a costco where people sort shelter as the storm hit, the lights went out before eventually coming back on. but it was a strange, surreal scene. and take a look at what happened during the a's astros baseball game. the roof was closed, but that did not stop the rain from getting inside the ballpark. nonetheless, so far, there are no reports of any serious injuries from the weather. >> will we be seeing some wet weather of our own in parts of the bay area? abc seven news meteorologist andy patel is here tracking what we should expect in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. a little bit of drizzle or moisture out there tonight, sandy. yeah, absolutely. >> and tomorrow morning you're going to need those wipers across parts of the bay area because of the drizzle. we already have it, as you

mentioned. take a look at this live picture from emeryville. you can see that marine layer there across the bay area. it's not just near the coast as you look at live doppler seven, it has pushed in across the peninsula down towards san jose, in towards the east bay, and even into the north bay, all the way up towards santa rosa. visibility right now, just over two miles in half moon bay, seven miles in petaluma. you'll need to allow that extra time and be careful. there will be some damp roadways, so here's a look at your planner. 7 a.m. clouds, fog and drizzle 50s for your temperatures. partly cloudy by noontime and it is going to be a breezy afternoon. upper 50s to low 80s. cooler in the evening. i'll be back to let you know how your weekend is shaping up in just a few minutes. dan okay, sandy, thanks a lot. >> all right. if you're debating on whether to go out to the contra costa county fair over the next few days, organizers have a message for you. they say more security and stricter rules are now in place in an effort to improve safety over last year's event, abc seven news reporter j.r. stone is in antioch tonight and has more.

>> it's what you'd expect at a county fair, and i have corn on the cob, kids and families alike chowing down, having the time of their lives. >> we got to pet the goats. the baby goats. it was really cute. >> but last year here at the contra costa county fair, there were several fights among teenagers seen here in the cell phone video. fair organizers, though, tell us that changes have been made when it comes to security. i did see a lot of personnel in place to there. >> yes, we have beefed up security, put security in our parking lots and more outside the entrance of the gates just as a precaution. anybody 18 years are under needs a chaperon of somebody 25 years or older to be here with the fair. we want to make sure that people are not just dropping off their teenagers and thinking we're a babysitting site, and those changes are being seen already. >> i think the chaperon part is awesome, because i really feel like we all have to take care of

our own kids. >> did they check coming in? >> they did because they had. they asked the kids and they had a group of people before me that they would not let them in because they didn't have a proper chaperon. >> last year was a little chaotic. it was a little too much, you know, younger crowd was kind of taken over. a lot of the stuff that was here. it's a lot more low key today than it usually was last year. >> the goal a safe and fun weekend for families. >> we have a tina turner tribute band, a couple different party bands out here, camel rides, pony rides, petting zoo, lots of carnival rides, lots of great fair food. >> the hope now is that the focus here at the fair stays on the fun things to do, and not what so many of us saw last year. what's the best part? the best favorite part? the food. >> yeah, yeah, i like the food. >> ten out of ten. good in antioch, j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> ten out of ten. >> that's saying something. well, every day here, we at abc seven news are looking for ways to build a better bay area and

the complex issue of homelessness is something we all are hoping to crack. >> yeah. tonight, the city of san francisco is celebrating its new numbers on homelessness, but it doesn't really paint the full picture. >> so let's walk you through it. the results of the most recent homelessness count were put out today. the city says the number of people living out on the street has reached the lowest level in nearly a decade. however, when you look at the total number of homeless across the city, that number is at a record high at more than 8300 people. the number of people sleeping in vehicles spiked 37. this is all despite a massive amount of money being spent on the issue, according to a recent city audit, funding for the crisis reached 676,000,000 in 20 2223. >> across the bay. we're also keeping a close eye in on oakland this week with the city's new era in law enforcement. of course. police chief lloyd mitchell is in his first week on the job, and we wanted to find out more about how it will go from there. so we had oakland mayor shengtao join us today on abc seven news

midday to discuss his new role. >> the first line of work for chief mitchell is really a meeting. you know, his rank and file. he's going to meet his rank and file. you know, he understands the strategy. he fully supports the strategy. and we're going to continue to press on that gas pedal because it you know, for us it's about saving lives. and it's about making sure that people feel safe. >> in oakland, mayor tao points to a study showing that the department's operation cease fire crime fighting strategy is getting results. recent crime data shows most all forms of crime have fallen this year, except for robberies. >> of course, celebrating the breakthroughs is a key part of building a better bay area. and tonight, the south bay is the source of a big one. downtown san jose is hoping to spark the summer season with a little song and dance. and that's not all the abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more from tonight's events. hoping to be a boost for the downtown scene. >> a new kind of scene is

brewing. this is the first year off the grid, a popular food truck market that started in san francisco 14 years ago is now in san jose. they're partnering with gordon biersch, his weekly night market. >> i love it, i feel comfortable i can bring her out. it's every type of food we could try beers and music. it's like pretty nice. every thursday they'll have live music from san jose, jazz and rotating food trucks. i'm a foodie, so i just love food. so yeah, and i like i like it that the trucks are a little locally owned business usually. so i can come support them in downtown. >> the summer block party series returned to. each month through october, a block party will be held to highlight local music vendors, arts and small businesses. >> we just want people to feel welcome. >> at consett barbershop, they brought the chairs outside for exposure. >> we have talent like him that needs platforms and events like this to showcase. >> owner khan chung invited

this was the scene on the 14 freeway this morning. the person who took the video says the bear appeared to be looking for food, which of course makes good sense, not just in los angeles either. the lake tahoe area is dealing with a close interaction of its own. the sierra county sheriff's office has issued a warning after putting dowa bear spotted in downieville. the bear is believed to be responsible for a series of break ins and yesterday, trying to get into a gym at a school. there we spoke with a state wildlife expert who says the search for food is drawing a

growing number of bears out of hiding. >> they have a tremendous sense of smell, right? uh- seven times greater than that of a bloodhound. black bear. so. and it's food that motivates them. and when they discover that human beings can provide food, or their homes or neighborhoods are sources for food of all sorts, you know, garbage, pet food, they learn. and that's, they become bolder and bolder. >> i've been told by experts they could smell a tic tac inside a car. officials say people living in mountain communities must remember to secure their trash and recycling materials, take down bird feeders, and secure any enclosures where chickens or other livestock are kept. >> governor newsom took center stage at the vatican today, highlighting california's role in preventing climate change. after meeting the pope this morning, governor newsom appeared at a panel discussion as part of a three day climate summit. the governor addressed how the changing climate is affecting california's landscapes and natural disasters.

news reporter cornell bernard was among the guest speakers. there's cornell for tonight's event, including a live auction and a barbecue dinner. organizers say the event raised about $150,000. >> that's great. visa is rolling out changes to how credit and debit cards will operate. the biggest change will allow banks to issue one payment card that can be connected to multiple bank accounts. you'll be able to set criteria with your bank, such as having some purchases applied to the debit card while other purchases go on the credit card. the new features would mean a thinner wallet with people having to carry fewer physical cards. visa says the changes will be available this summer. >> well, it's a tradition like no other in san francisco this weekend. the wacky race that is the bay to breakers. thousands of people are expected to take part. many of them will probably wear costumes. and who knows what other high jinks will take place. the race gets going at 8 a.m. on sunday, but beware, there are several street closures starting saturday night. the closures stretch across the city from the embarcadero to ocean beach. most

had only 1.23% of the state is in the lowest category of the drought, abnormally dry. and that's in the southeastern portion of california. the only precipitation we're expecting is in the form of drizzle. our pattern is pretty quiet. high pressure over the pacific. we've got a low over the pacific as well, but our marine layer is about 2000ft deep and it's made its push into many locations across the bay area. so tomorrow morning it's going to be sweater weather numbers. right now in the 50s and the 60s, we still have that onshore breeze 18 miles an hour in san francisco all the way out towards the delta in fairfield. this pretty much means that it will keep that cool ocean air going as we head towards tomorrow, and a live view from our exploratorium camera just shrouded in cloud cover right now. overnight clouds, fog and drizzle. tomorrow we're looking at sunshine bay and inland in the afternoon and for the weekend, breezy and cooler conditions expected. so when we look at our hourly forecast at 5:00 in the

morning, there will be damp roadways. it's going to be widespread gray to start the day, but i think we're going to see a little more clearing a little sooner. noontime, the north bay that's been socked in today will clear out quickly, but there will still be cloud cover around the east bay and along the coast. and then we'll start to notice some of it trying to peel away from the coastal areas to the north. your morning temperatures, 40s, 50s. watch out for the fog. the drizzle tomorrow afternoon, a wide variety breezy coast side, upper 50s there, low 80s inland. you're going to see plenty of sun away from the coastline. now, i do want to show you what to expect for the golden state valkyries thrive city block party on saturday at 2:00 62 degrees. the sun will be out. it will be a nice way to welcome the newest team for the wnba temperature of 64 degrees. later in the afternoon, the accuweather seven day forecast morning clouds and drizzle giving way to sunshine away from the beaches. breezy and cooler for the weekend. still pleasant, mild inland with 70s 50s coast side and then we'll warm it up
