letter last year, but the employees still haven't been paid. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley, and i'm ama daetz. >> alleged wage theft comes as a new report suggests the bay area has one of the highest minimum wage violations in the state. >> abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story. as dominoes in la lucha, standing in front of the radisson hotel oakland airport, where he used to work, francisco bonilla says he's owed more than $7,000 in wages from the hotel. >> me me me me muchas cosas tengo. >> speaking through a translator, bonilla says that's money he and his family need to pay rent and their bills. last october, the oakland department of workplace and employment standards found that the radisson hotel did not pay the correct minimum wage to 128 employees between july 2019 and april 2020, totaling more than $400,000 in back wages. the letter demanded restitution be paid within 45 days, six months

later, it still hasn't been paid. >> it says to us that they don't think that the city of oakland takes this seriously, and we need the city of oakland to show that that they do. >> sonya caraballo is a researcher at unite here local two, the hotel workers union. she says low wage workers at hotels like the radisson are often immigrants, and women, many with limited english skills, which karabell argues makes them easy to exploit the difference between what they should have been paid legally and what they were paid a difference of $5 an hour. the radisson hotel declined to comment for this story, but a new report by rutgers university that examines wage theft in california over the past ten years finds that the san francisco oakland fremont metropolitan area had the highest rate of employees being paid below the minimum wage at 14. >> i would point out that we're only looking at minimum wage violations, but oftentimes these are paired with, you know, discrimination, sexual harassment. >> daniel galvin is the lead author of the report. he says competition and profit are the

main drivers of wage theft. the biggest violations happening in the food service industry and private household industries, like maids and housekeepers. he says intervention is key. >> we also need stronger enforcement to make sure that that the workers who are entitled to the minimum wage are actually getting the wages that they're earned. >> in oakland, anser hassan, abc seven news. >> california's attorney general has issued a cease and desist order to the nonprofit neighbors together oakland. that's according to online news site oakland side neighbors together was founded by activist seneca scott in 2021. scott ran for oakland mayor in 2022. he now helps lead the campaign to recall mayor sheng tao, the may 10th order states. the group illegally solicited and received donations while failing to register as a nonprofit with the state. it also says the group failed to file required financial forms. in an email, neighbors together says it will appeal the attorney general's order. >> heartbreak tonight in one san jose neighborhood after a new beautification project was vandalized, more than a dozen new trees celebrated at an event

last week have been snapped and torn apart. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes first covered the planting of these trees is here with an update. zach. so senseless. >> yeah, so senseless and such a sad update to bring after the big event. planting the final trees. that was only last week and it saw the mayor of san jose city officials out planting trees themselves that day. the community was excited to finally get the trees. they asked the city for years. for today, they're beyond disappointed. from celebration to heartbreak. last week, the willow business district in san jose finally got the trees. they'd spent years requesting. 29 trees were planted. one was right in front of the business of norberto robles. we spoke with him the day of the official celebration. >> an i love it. it's hot. the olive tree, which i love. >> but friday morning that and the many other young trees he and his neighbors were so excited to get were found like this, broken with pieces left on the sidewalk. >> i ride my bicycle every morning, early morning and i saw this, my tree and then i started seeing more trees. and then i

went around walking around to see to count how many. >> robles said he counted at least 17. >> it's terrible. it's very terrible because i love trees and we need the trees in the city, you know, it's so sad, you know, he said to me. >> in the community, though, data shows many affluent communities have dense tree canopies and reap health benefits from it. other neighborhoods like willow have had to do without it. san jose city council member omar torres pushed for the council to pay for the trees and maintain them for three years. he said the vandals responsible for the destruction may have cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars. >> unfortunately, they're just terrorizing the neighborhood because, you know, again, this is a very important business district to not only my district, but the city of san jose, torres said. >> the willow business district has historically been underserved, but he plans to have the department of transportation replant or fix the damaged trees. and council member torres there also told me that he is in contact with the san jose police department captain who oversees that

neighborhood, to look into who vandalized the trees and hopefully prevent it from happening again. >> all right, zach, thank you so much. >> the city of novato appears to have lost its oldest oak tree. this was the scene about 1130. this morning on alameda del prado. the huge tree between cinnamon teal lane and puffin court split in half. as you can see, it's massive. it fell on two condos and caused a gas leak. witnesses describe the impact as feeling like an earthquake. >> enormous pop. and then i saw the tree just right down in the middle of the street. so i rushed out. i know the owners over there, so i wanted to make sure everything was okay, their actual entrance is blocked. there chimney was torn down, it hit a secondary condo perpendicular. their entrance is blocked, and it looks like we've got a bit of a gas leak at this point. >> novato police are advising people to avoid driving through the area for obvious reasons. and in san francisco today, the man convicted of attacking former house speaker nancy

pelosi's husband inside their home was sentenced today to 30 years in prison. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow was in court when the sentence was announced. she is in the newsroom live for us with the story. melanie >> dan david depape did not speak in court today and looked straight ahead as the judge spoke to him, telling him that she believes there's one silver lining in this case. u.s. district judge jacqueline scott corley sentenced david to pap to 30 years today in connection with the october 28th, 2022 intrusion into speaker emerita nancy pelosi and husband paul pelosi's home. he'll receive credit for approximately 18 months and 20 days already served. the government had asked for 40 years. depape was convicted of assault and attempted kidnaping charges in november of last year. outside court, a spokesperson read a statement on behalf of the u.s. attorney for the northern district of california. >> today's sentence reflects david depapes lack of remorse and contrition for violently assaulting mr. pelosi. >> in asking for 14 years to

papst defense attorney noted he had no prior contact with the criminal justice system. was at a low point in his life, feels great remorse and that this was not a murder case. still judge corley gave three reasons for her 30 year sentence. first, she said she believes depape is presently dangerous. second, she called the very violent act of attacking paul pelosi completely gratuitous. and third, that depapes actions were unprecedented in that he broke into the home of a politician and attacked her spouse, a sentiment echoed by the acting assistant agent in charge of the fbi. >> public servants, and indeed all citizens, deserve to work and live without threats of violence or of intimidation. >> prior to sentencing, pelosi's daughter read two statements, one on behalf of her father and one on behalf of her mother. in them, we learned paul pelosi seen here at the medal of freedom ceremony two weeks ago, continues to suffer with dizziness, falling down and headaches and that he has to avoid bright lights and loud noises outside court. depapes son and ex-wife reacted to his sentence. we're going to appeal

this. >> i think that's quite sad, i think that's a really long time because if you think about it right, he's already nearly 50. he's he's basically it's just a death sentence. >> judge corley told depape she believes there's one silver lining to the case his reconnecting to his family. noting the letters of support the court received from his mother and twin sister. depape does have the right to appeal both his conviction and today's sentence. proceedings continue next week in superior court for the state charges that he's facing in the newsroom. melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> all right, mel, thank you so much. a newly released video appears to show a violent assault by rapper and producer sean diddy combs on his then girlfriend. this graphic footage was obtained by cnn, which says it shows combs in a towel chasing cassie ventura down a los angeles hotel hallway. back in 2016, ventura, which you'll see is grabbed by her neck and thrown to the floor and then kicked twice and then dragged.

now we're not going to show the entire video because it is disturbing, ventura's lawyer says. this video corroborates allegations made in a since settled lawsuit that combs physically abused her for years. combs has previously denied the allegations. abc news has not independently verified the video and has reached out to combs representatives for comment. >> coming up, a police chase in southern california ends with a head on collision on a freeway. look at this. we're going to hear from one of the innocent drivers hit during the suspect's attempt to get away. but first, by choice or left behind. >> new developments in the saga of a group of american volunteers, including two from the bay area, who became trapped in the gaza strip. abc seven

stay, but the council on american islamic relations says that they are stuck. >> we heard that the state department had successfully evacuated the american doctors. we learned shortly thereafter that doctor hale did not receive any notice of evacuation. did not receive any calls or instructions, and had no way to leave. today, more than 20 us medical workers were volunteering on a two week medical mission. >> they became trapped after an israeli military attack in rafah last week shuttered the city's critical border crossing to egypt. >> back home in southern california, several people were injured, including two police officers. following an early morning police chase, and it all ended with a suspect driving the wrong way on the 405 freeway, reaching speeds of more than 80 miles an hour before crashing head on into traffic. reporter jaysha patel with our sister station in los angeles has the story. >> oh my goodness. she's going to go head on into those

vehicles. oh my god. she decided to slam into them without even hitting the brakes. so we're going to have innocent people hurt. >> it was like a scene out of a horror movie. a speeding van hit with pit maneuver after pit maneuver, but continuing to evade police. air7 hd was overhead during the scary pursuit. >> i just see the headlights coming at us and boom, the collision. and then i was she. her car was pinned against mine and that's when i promptly exited the vehicle to the shoulder just to keep myself safe. pisses me off because i can't deal with noise. >> i've been ordered by the cartel. >> this all started just before 430 this morning. officers responded to a radio call of a woman causing a disturbance at fourth and rose in the venice area. she allegedly rammed into police vehicles, injuring two officers, and then took off. she was speeding, dodging cars and going the wrong way on the 405 near brentwood in the northbound lanes, the driver reaching speeds more than 80mph before

the coliseum authority unanimously approved a resolution to negotiate an agreement for the oakland roots and the soul soccer teams to play at the 58 year old facility. the resolution calls for 34 events over a one year period starting in march of 2025. the soccer teams will pay for and install new turf. final approval is expected next month. >> steph curry's vast business enterprises are getting a new home, according to the chronicle. curry closed sale this week on a two story building at the corner of 20th and illinois streets in san francisco's dogpatch neighborhood, not far from chase center. the report says the warriors star paid $8.5 million for it, nearly six times higher than what it sold for three years ago. we're told the building will serve as the new headquarters for 30 inc, steph's business enterprise. >> the bay area's new wnba team continues to gain support ahead

of the 2025 debut. the golden state valkyries has surpassed 10,000 season tickets, deposits sold. the team says more than 2500 of those deposits were made after the team made a name revealed, and the brand launch on tuesday. fans are invited to a valkyries block party at thrive city outside chase center. the party starts tomorrow at 2:00. should be great and on sunday, thousands of costumed racers are expected to attend san francisco's beloved bay to breakers race. >> it officially gets going at 8 a.m. on sunday, but beware, some of the street closures begin tomorrow night. they stretch across the city from the embarcadero to ocean beach. most of them will end by 11 a.m. sunday, but there are a few that will stretch into the afternoon, so keep that in mind. >> so the weather could affect the costume choices. >> that's true. you don't want to be too warm if it's going to be hot. sandy out. what's going on? >> you know what i think? if they dress in layers, dress that is ama and dan, they'll be okay.

we know some will show up without their clothing on. let's take a look at the forecast for bay to breakers on sunday. it really couldn't be better weatforunning in the morning. there will be some patches of fog temperatures in the low to mid 50s and then slowly climbing up into the low 60s. sun will be out. it's going to be a nice day and also a beautiful day for the valkyries. uh- block party tomorrow afternoon at 2:00. bright and breezy, starting off at 61 degrees and coming up to 64. so make sure you have your sunscreen and enjoy! if you're going to either one of those events, here's a live view from our oakland airport camera and you can see that the marine layer is there in the distance. if you are getting out of town and you are heading off to honolulu, there is a 50% chance of rain, 83 degrees isolated showers kahului 86 degrees. so warm there. live doppler seven showing you the fog right near the coastline. it will push back in once again, but the pattern is pretty quiet. you'll probably notice that parts of northern california getting clearing from

the fog high pressure is still the controlling factor as we head into the weekend. so other than mist and drizzle, we're not expecting any rain. it is breezy right now. gusts to 24 at napa sustained 27 onshore in san francisco. that's preventing us from getting too hot. as a matter of fact, our warmest location right now in the low 80s, places like brentwood, 60 degrees in san francisco and a nice view from santa cruz. camera people are already starting off their weekend overnight fog spreads, spotty drizzle tomorrow. mainly sunny and breezy, and early next week we've got sunshine and warmer weather coming your way, so tonight that fog will be slow to spread from the coast into our valleys. by 1130 at night and then backing in the morning, starting off with some back into the drizzly pattern. like today and then clearing away. actually, most areas will see the sun tomorrow afternoon. your morning numbers will be in the 40s and 50s. you will need to layer up because it starts off on the cool side tomorrow afternoon. i think you could get away with short sleeve weather

away from the coast in the 70s where the sun is shining, breezy coast side. there will be a few patches of fog with temperatures in the 50s and 60s. your accuweather seven day forecast. a really nice looking weekend at or slightly below average for the weekend, and then we'll bump up those temperatures up into the mid 80s by monday and tuesday. low 60s coast side temperatures will still hold in the 80s, but a little bit of a dip midweek. and then by friday it's going to be noticeably cooler. dan and ummah all right. >> sounds good. thank you sandhya. >> oakland unified school busses are going all electric. usd will be the first major district in the country to transfer to transition to a 100% electric school bus system. the bus company that handles student transportation for the district is providing a fleet of 74 electric school busses and chargers to be placed across the city. all of it will be managed through i technology, by the way. >> coming up, the santa cruz

years later, guests still come from around the world to enjoy a thrill at that california landmark. >> abc7 news south bay reporter dustin dorsey took a trip to the beach to see how the legendary attraction will be celebrated this weekend. reporter there's nothing quite like the anticipation going to the top of a roller coaster, but even better than the rise is the fall, a feeling guests have felt riding the giant dipper at the santa cruz beach boardwalk for 100 years. >> it's like my first big coaster. i'm just excited to see it, like, be like 100 years old today. >> may 17th, 1924. construction of the iconic wooden roller coaster officially wrapped up and a legend was born. it cost an eye popping $0.15 a ride back then. saturday, the boardwalk will celebrate the giant dipper
