saturday. i'm whit johnson. we begin with deadly severe weather on the move. more than 400,000 people in texas with without power. the national weather service reporting what they call a derecho packing powerful straight-line winds gusting up to hurricane strength ripped through houston this week. the death toll rising to seven people. large trees coming down, homes and buildings destroyed. one city official saying some of the power outages could last weeks. a tornado touching down in pittsburgh on friday, winds gusting more than 100 miles per hour. tonight, growing concern as a heat wave expands across the region. temperatures feeling like the triple digits as many are left with no power or air-conditioning. somara theodore with the forecast in just a moment. first jacqueline lee leading us off. >> reporter: tonight, the death toll rising in the houston area, where the national weather service now says a derecho struck late thursday. straight line winds gusting as high as 90 to 100 miles per hour.

this building under construction, collapsing during the storm. at least seven people losing their lives across the area, including 31-y martinez, a mother of four who was moving her suv. her brother, jonathon, telling our station, ktrk. >> when she ran out, the tree, it snapped, and she thought she was safer in the truck, from what i know, and that's when the tree fell. >> reporter: dozens of houston i-s-d campuses, the state's largest school district, damaged. officials say their goal to have every student safely back in school on monday, providing they have power. as of this afternoon, more than 400,000 customers, across harris county alone, are still in the dark. severe weather striking much of the country for days. this tornado, touching down in pittsburgh friday. winds of 105 miles per hour. texas officials say some families could be without power for days or even longer.

there are new concerns about heat and air quality leading to challenginge iing conditions th weekend. >> let's get right to meteorologist somara theodore. now another round of severe weather on the way. >> reporter: that is correct, whit. we have our eye on wisconsin, where jusently a severe thunderstorm watch was issued. that's until 10:00 p.m. the east coast of florida could see thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon. we see an elevated risk for severe weather in central kansas, where they could see tornados tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening. we are tracking the heat in the south. houston with the power outages could be exacerbated with the next three days temperatures approaching or in the 90s. factor in the humidity, it will feel much hotter, places like laredo, texas, in the triple digits. overseas now to the war in ukraine.

ukrainian troops struggling to hold russian forces at bay as they advance on eastern towns and industries. president zelenskyy says thousands of people have been evacuated from kharkiv. the u.n. reporting more than 10 million ukrainians have been displaced since the war began. james longman tonight from ukraine. >> reporter: ukraine claims to have stabilized russia's incursion toward kharkiv. the fight north raging for a week now, at least 12 towns and villages swallowed up by russia's advance. the bombardment of kharkiv itself relently. hours ago a guided bomb striking this neighborhood, wounding five people, including a 15 and 16-year-old. we've been in kharkiv a few days now. we have day we hear missile and drone attacks on the city. this hit a few hours ago. we actually heard it hit.

incursions into the north are likely. staying overseas now, in the war between israel and hamas the idf announcing the body of a fourth hostage has been recovered from a tunnel in gaza. let's bring in marcus moore from israel. what else are you learning about this. >> reporter: family members said 53-year-old ron benjamin had been out on a cycling ride when he was murdered on october 7th, his body taken to gaza by hamas. the idf saying tonight they have now recovered his body there. he is the fourth hostage to be recovered after three overs in the past 24 hours. this grim news adding to the anguish so many families are feeling as they implore the israeli government to reach a hostage deal and bring their loved ones home. some took to the streets in tel aviv to protest. this use comes as the temporary pier off the gaza coast is up and running. it's expected to handle 150

trucks a day. also tonight, potential ripples in the israeli government as benny gantz gave an ultimatum to prime minister netanyahu threatening to quit the government on june 8th unless netanyahu implements a six-point plan that includes bringing back the hostages and establishing an international administration for gaza once the war ends. whit. back here at home, the race for the white house is heading up as both president biden and former president trump seek to solidify support for some key voting blocs. late today, trump promising attendees at the nra convention in dallas that he will protect gun rights and roll back some of president biden's gun reforms. the current president is in georgia trying to appeal directly to a traditionally strong part of his base. here's jay o'brien. >> reporter: in his first campaign appearance since agreeing to debate president biden twice, tonight, donald trump, scoring the

endorsement of the nra, as the embattled gun rights group turns to the former president for help weathering a political storm. >> we've got to get gun owners to vote. >> reporter: trump telling the nra's annual meeting in dallas he'll roll back biden's gun control reforms, after an estimated 150 plus mass shootings so far this year. >> the nra has stood with me from the very beginning. and with your vote, i will stand strong for your rights and liberties and four more years in the white house. >> reporter: once a politically potent organization, the nra, now at an inflection point. its longtime, powerful ceo, wayne lapierre stepping down earlier this year. in february, a new york jury finding the nra liable in a civil corruption case, fining lapierre and another senior executive close to $6.5 million. here in dallas, mike barr will be watching the debates closely. he's voted for trump twice, but isn't sure about this year. what could trump do to get your vote versus somebody else? >> shut his mouth.

president presumptive gop presidential nominee will be monday when he's back in court. new details from that tragic boat collision that claimed the life of a 15-year-old girl in florida. an attorney for the man accused of operating the boat releasing surveillance video, claiming it shows that her client was unaware his boat had hit anyone. >> reporter: tonight, new surveillance video showing the operator of the boat, that authorities say fatally struck and killed a florida teen, 78 gold carlos "bill" seen docked his boat after the incident. releasing the video stating, “as the video shows, bill was alone, he was not drinking, and he had no clue that he may have hit someone.” authorities say 15-year-old ella adler was wakeboarding with friends off the coast of key biscayne last weekend. she was in the water with the board attached to her feet when she was fatally struck. the boater not stopping to help.

police before her july court date. turks and caicos hardened their gun laws banning civilians from carrying guns and ammunition and imposing harsher tonight the governors of oklahoma, virginia and pennsylvania asking turks and caicos to reconsider the charges against their residents and expedite the release back to their states and families as soon as possible. the former prime minister of turks and caicos is defending what some have described as harsh punishment for these types of offenses. she points out that the country has experienced violent crime before and adding deciding what is just is not always easy. there is still much more ahead this saturday. the so-called miracle drug that may have saved a firefighter's life. and why diddy won't face
