the contra costa county fair went on without a hitch this weekend, but going to the bank to deposit the profits is now a much more unfortunate story. good evening. i'm ama daetz. it's a nearly $90,000 heist in antioch, and it involved the money you may have spent. police say the two victims were employees at the fair. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone spent the evening in antioch and has more on this investigation. jr. >> police say the two employees went to go and try to deposit

the money in the night drop box at 218 in the morning. they had thousands of dollars with them when they were held up at gunpoint. the contra costa county fair ended late sunday night, but it's what happened in the overnight hours after the fair at this bmo bank, a mile and a half down the road in antioch that is raising eyebrows . >> two of our employees possibly were taking a very large cash deposit to a bank not too far away, and were robbed at the bank, not on the fairgrounds. >> craig cannon is the president of the contra costa county fair board of directors. he was not the one making the day to day operations calls at the fair and is now demanding answers. he says nearly $90,000. the fair money was stolen outside this bank, which is located in a strip mall where stores are boarded up and unhoused individuals are living in the parking lot. >> things were not handled the way they're supposed to be, and we're going to work on fixing that. but you never send an

unarmed citizen to a bank at a wee hours of the day, when the banks don't even open and expect us to make a deposit, a night deposit would be made right here. >> the only possible camera i could see from here is right there. and police have yet to release any surveillance video. some community members were angered when we broke the news to them wednesday night. yeah, they. yeah it is. are you surprised that somebody would rob somebody else for the money that was made from the fair? >> i don't surprise me at all. >> that's bad. that's really bad. >> cannon says the loss of this amount of money could impact the fair's music headliners and animal attractions in the years to come, he says the fair went very well this year without any problems until this happened off property and in a community that has been hit hard by crime, everybody's free game right now with these criminals and it's everywhere. >> antioch, of course, with the limited police department out there, they have their hands

full. >> police have not given any description of the suspect. they also haven't given any information that would hint if this thief knew that the money was going to be at the bank at this time, or if this was a random robbery. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> all right, j.r, thank you so much. onto the peninsula. now, the mayor of redwood city is taking action after a fire at a recycling facility sent smoke across the region. we've been following incidents involving sims metal for years, including at this metal recycling center today. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez spoke to the city's mayor tonight, who wants an investigation. >> a fire that broke out at sims metal on the redwood city port sent plumes of smoke that reached parts of santa clara county. manuel michelle took these videos. he works at a water recycling plant next door. michelle said workers were advised to put on respirators because of all the smoke. >> this has probably been the biggest fire i've seen. we had to stop for maybe an hour or so while it got contained. >> sims metal is a recycling

facility that shreds things like cars, refrigerators, washers and more. the fire broke out just before three wednesday afternoon . redwood city fire said crews put out the fire by six, mayor jeff guy said this is not the first big fire at this facility. i'm disappointed that it happened again, especially since it happened the first time when i was serving as mayor. in 2013, two fires broke out at the recycling plant, prompting public officials to issue more than a dozen safety measures in order to prevent future fires. mayor guy said after wednesday's fire. city officials will be talking to the recycling plant again, but we'll be looking very carefully to the forensics, to what happened, why it happened and what corrective measures need to be made, whether it be physical improvements to the facility or operational improvements, to make sure that whatever is being shredded doesn't catch on fire and doesn't blow black smoke throughout the south bay, redwood city fire officials tell me what sims metal crews are doing is moving a pile into a

have video that was sent to abc seven by a classmate. you can see the knife on the floor of the boy's locker room where the fight started. investigators say one student pulled out a knife and stabbed the other student. the victim was taken to a local hospital. the district is offering counseling for students . now to the new ambitions from the former police chief of oakland, leronne armstrong. he's now making plans to step into the political arena. armstrong filed paperwork this morning to launch his campaign for an oakland city council seat. he was fired from the police chief position a little more than a year ago by mayor shengtao. armstrong is a west oakland native and now lives in district seven, but he's running for the at large council seat, which represents the entire city. >> i could serve beyond, you know, law enforcement, beyond the police department that i could continue to give back to my community. that's given so much to me. >> an investigation found armstrong mishandled two cases involving his officers while he was chief. however, an independent arbitrator later cleared him of wrongdoing. he has since filed a lawsuit

the university with these memories of, like, graduation being disrupted in this way, they really could fix it if they wanted to. reporter. >> tonight, uc santa cruz says it will continue the remote instruction in place this week through tomorrow and friday. an old, outdated ship is sinking into the delta and now leaking fuel and oil. multiple state agencies are responding and trying to contain the leaking diesel fuel. the aurora, as it's called, sits about 20 minutes northwest of stockton. it's a decommissioned cruise ship built in 1998 and had been in the process of being restored. time to talk travel. the unofficial start of summer is expected to be another busy holiday weekend, and tomorrow will be when it all begins. we first start on the roads as we check out some of our live freeway cameras in the area, 80 going through berkeley and emeryville. all seems to be one of the biggest problem spots. make sure to avoid those peak commute hours. triple-a says this will be the second busiest memorial day weekend on

jupiter. charlie colon was 58 years old. colin. excuse me. tonight, a class action lawsuit over systemic sexual assault at the recently closed federal women's prison in dublin is set for trial. but as abc seven news reporter tara campbell reports, the case involving hundreds of prisoners could forever change the system. >> just one month after shuttering the doors of the federal women's prison in dublin. a day in court for hundreds of women who say they were abused inside. i think this will be a benchmark case to say to prisons, you need to treat people fairly. >> these are very vulnerable individuals and we're not going to tolerate this kind of abuse. >> a district court judge announcing wednesday the federal bureau of prisons will go to trial next june over claims of widespread sexual abuse. erin neff is with the california coalition for women prisoners. >> it's very good that we have a date set. >> a class action lawsuit was

filed last year by a group of more than 600 women, claiming the feds allowed for guards to sexually abuse prisoners. >> this cannot be isolated to just the 605 women, because the problems are system wide. the abuse, medical neglect, retaliation in it, just the list goes on and on. >> eight former correctional officers have already been convicted of abusing female prisoners at the federal prison while talks of a settlement in this larger case are underway, it appears that the prison system recognizes that the abuse was rampant and that change needs to be made, and they appear to want to reach out to a settlement because this was an ongoing crime problem for many years. meanwhile, advocates want people to be in the know. hosting a virtual town hall thursday evening with updates on the case and its potential impacts on the prison system. >> this is a prison that is

funded by our tax dollars and it's important for people to know and that while you don't think it is affecting you, it is affecting your greater community . >> the judge has also ordered a special master to oversee mandatory changes to the federal prison system. tara campbell, abc seven news. >> the president and ceo of the aquarium of the bay has resigned. that's according to the san francisco chronicle. we've spoken to george jacob several times since he took the helm at the san francisco located aquarium in 2017, the board's chairman told the chronicle. the board asked jacob to step down. the chairman says the board had recently received complaints about deteriorating equipment and collections agencies, calling the aquarium, jacob told the chronicle he resigned to pursue a new project. california could extend the statute of limitations for the prosecution of domestic violence from five years to 15 years. the proposal is gaining new attention after disturbing video was released showing sean

diddy combs physically assaulting his former girlfriend on hotel surveillance video. back in 2016, the l.a. district attorney's office said earlier this week it cannot prosecute combs for the assault because it's outside the statute of limitations. the new bill was introduced by state senator susan rubio. >> i am a survivor of domestic violence, so i have been very vocal about protecting victims. >> the bill has already passed in the senate. if it is approved , it will become law january 1st of next year. tomorrow, louisville police are expected to release video footage of golfer scottie scheffler s arrest during last week's pga championship. the department said it would also provide an update on its internal investigation surrounding the case. police arrested scheffler shortly after 6 a.m. friday after he attempted to steer around traffic congestion. the traffic backup was caused by a fatal crash earlier that morning. scheffler faces several charges, including second degree assault of a police officer. investigators say his car dragged a police officer who

tried to get him to stop. many feel like the ticket buying process for concerts or sports games has gotten out of control. tomorrow, the justice department and several u.s. states are expected to step in. they're expected to file a joint lawsuit alleging antitrust violations by live nation, the group that oversees ticketmaster. it came under extra scrutiny a couple of years back, when many were blocked out of chances to buy tickets for the taylor swift eras tour. a successful case could lead to sweeping changes in the live events industry. a california family is on the hook for almost 90 grand after a massive mistake looking for vacation souvenirs. at the end of last year, the rust family took a trip from their fresno home to pismo beach. >> my kids were picking or they thought they were collecting seashells, but they actually collected clams, 72 to be exact. >> oh, the rust family didn't know clamming has regular sessions. they got a ticket on the spot and later received a
