soon be required by law to do when you speed from abc news, this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning everyone. i'm rhiannon ally and i'm andrew dymburt. >> the holiday travel rush begins today and we're seeing more extreme weather. >> extreme heat is shattering records in parts of the south, but the big story this morning more tornadoes. this was the damage last night north of austin, texas. however, the scene is far more devastating in the midwest this morning. severe storms racing across the country are only adding to a spring of extreme weather, from record breaking heat to deadly tornadoes. authorities in greenfield, iowa, now confirm four people were killed. at least 35 were injured when a tornado carved this path of destruction through town. winds topping 135mph. this 18 wheeler blown over as a tornado roared down a highway. >> this is the main intersection in greenfield. now this entire

block leveled. the cleanup is underway. we've got some power crews here, bucket trucks trying to restore power. >> the remnants of those storms now heading for the east coast, hitting the i-95 corridor from dc to boston later today, as millions prepare to travel for the holiday weekend. so far this year, 862 tornadoes have been reported in 37 states, the most active season since at least 2017. and when it comes to the extreme heat, miami has seen the hottest may on record in recent days. the feels-like temperature up to 112 degrees. heat indexes around 100 are expected in the houston area tomorrow, where many people are without ac due to power outages stemming from last week's storms. the extreme heat also impacting south of the border. rescuers are racing to give water to these dehydrated monkeys in the mexican jungle. dozens have already died and in

the north, scientists now blame the warming climate for turning some rivers and streams in alaska orange, saying the color change is the result of permafrost thawing, releasing minerals into the water. meanwhile back in mexico, we are following breaking news. at least nine people are dead and dozens are injured after that stage collapsed at a campaign rally in northern mexico, people were screaming and running as heavy winds toppled that stage. the candidate who was on the stage at the time was not injured. >> back in this country, train service is expected to be delayed again this morning along the busy northeast corridor from new york as far south as washington downed power lines disrupted service between philadelphia and new york last night. although some service has resumed, it's expected to be slow going for hours. we turn now to the new flag controversy for supreme court justice samuel alito, just days after responding to an upside down american flag at his home. another flag is raising questions. abc's christiane cordero explains. christiane. good morning. andrew

>> good morning. justice alito. supporters say the flag dates back to early american history, but his critics say it raises questions about whether alito can be unbiased in cases related to january 6th. controversy in the air after the new york times published photos of this flag at supreme court, justice samuel alito, beach house some linking the flag to the january sixth rioters, the flag seen here among the crowd storming the capitol. >> what is justice samuel alito doing displaying this flag which is so politically sensitive, which appears to connote an opinion? >> the flag depicts a pine tree with the words appeal to heaven. it dates back to the revolutionary war, but has more recently been linked to christian nationalism and a religious strand of the so-called stop the steal movement. after the 2020 election, it's unclear who placed the flag or what kind of statement was being made, but some politicians have also flown it, including house speaker mike johnson, a spokesperson says johnson appreciates the flag's history, but justice alito, a judge, not a politician, faces

more scrutiny. his defenders are skeptical of the flag's connections to january sixth. >> it is outrageous, outrageous and unacceptable for people to take a flag from the american revolution and say that because some january 6th protesters flew it, that it's now unacceptable to fly that flag. >> just last week, the times published this photo of an upside down american flag flying at alito's virginia home. shortly after january 6th. also viewed as a stop the steal symbol. but alito said his wife flew that flag during a dispute with a neighbor. in the meantime, dozens of democrats are calling for alito to recuse himself from two cases related to january 6th, including one which will resolve donald trump's claims of presidential immunity from criminal prosecution when justice alito has not yet responded to this latest flag photo controversy. andrew. christiane. >> thank you. nikki haley now says she will vote for donald trump. trump repeatedly mocked

haley during the republican primary, and she painted him as unhinged and unqualified. but she claims he's the better choice in the general election. >> six saying the border is a national necessity. our safety and security demand it. we need to end inflation and give working families relief. we need to get runaway welfare spending under control. trump has not been perfect on these policies. i have made that clear many, many times. but biden has been a catastrophe. >> haley urged trump to reach out to her supporters, families of the uvalde school shooting victims have reached a $2 billion settlement with the city. >> they say they took what the insurance company was paying because they did not want to bankrupt the city they love, but they have filed a $500 million lawsuit against the state police officers involved in the botched response to the shooting. officers waited 77 minutes to take down that gunman who killed 19 fourth graders and two

teachers. tomorrow marks two years since that attack, a new concern now about the bird flu. >> another rare human case has been confirmed after an outbreak in a dairy cattle. the big question now are we doing enough testing this morning after the discovery of a second human case of bird flu linked to dairy cows, the cdc is warning more cases are likely. authorities say a michigan farm worker has recovered from mild symptoms. >> there's still very limited information about cases of avian influenza in humans. there's been so few cases that we're still learning about where this infection spreads. >> back in march, a farm worker in texas was diagnosed with the first human case of bird flu tied to dairy cows. both the texas and michigan patients who worked with cows both reported eye infections. the cdc says it's tested only 40 people since march. the michigan farm worker was one of those tested, but with bird flu outbreaks in cattle now reported in nine states and dozens of herds, experts say the infection is likely even more widespread.

>> we need to maintain testing, especially in our farm worker community, because that prolonged exposure to cattle does mean it's possible we may see additional incidental cases. >> reporter the cdc is warning states to keep up flu surveillance during the normally slow summer months. still, experts say the risk of a widespread infection among humans is low. >> so far, we're not seeing any signs of widespread transmission or any signs of human to human transmission of this virus. it's very much concentrated in livestock. with now a few cases, now being observed in farmers. >> the more widespread the virus becomes, the more chance it has to mutate and increase the risk to humans. protective gear, including n95 masks, are now available to farm workers. >> louisville police are expected to release new video today from the arrest of pro golfer scottie scheffler. he is accused of trying to drive around a crash last week near the site of the pga championship, injuring an officer at the scene. he now faces a felony assault charge and other counts. his attorney

accused of recording several girls. >> the country's biggest ticket seller is about to be served. the justice department is expected to file a lawsuit against live nation and ticketmaster over its alleged monopoly. here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> new action to address the high price of concert tickets and other live events, the justice department is expected to file an antitrust lawsuit as soon as today against live nation, the parent company of ticketmaster, which controls more than 70% of the ticket sales market. the investigation began two years ago after the taylor swift eras tour ticket meltdown when ticketmaster site crashed, leaving fans brokenhearted. >> the tickets are so overpriced that the average person isn't going to be able to go anymore. >> customers accuse ticketmaster and live nation of speculative sales and hidden fees. lawmakers in washington grilled live nation's president. >> this is all a definition of monopoly. >> if you care about the consumer cap the price.
