holiday weekend. experts saying we haven't seen this many people leaving town in almost 20 years. what you should know before you head out the door. good morning travelers. it is thursday, may 23rd. yes we're going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> let me show you something really pretty out here. our east bay hills camera showing you the full flower moon. this morning. totally full moon out there. it gets the name because this is the time of the year when flowers are in full bloom. i know allergies sufferers. you're feeling that right now. trees and grass pollen are still high, but what a nice picture we have out there. first thing this morning. i love that temperatures right now we're starting out in the low to mid 50s currently, so it's very typical for this time of the morning. and we're on our way to another day of mild sunshine this afternoon. a little bit of cloud cover along the coast. currently nothing thick in terms of fog temperatures very similar to yesterday. we'll get you into the mid 50s for daytime highs. now looking around the bay shoreline, we have just a little bit of patchy fog out there. most areas are reporting clear skies. it's another beautiful

day. lots of sunshine, upper 60s to the lower 70s for daytime highs. now inland we are starting out with clear skies. temperatures are in the upper 60s by 10 a.m, and then by 3 p.m. mild still with highs in the low 80s later on today. speaking of traffic, let's check in with amanda. see how we're doing this morning. >> good morning. here at 501 we're taking a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see nothing in your way, especially as you make your way into the city. but we did have an earlier issue that we want to get to. about an hour ago, crews actually cleared. this scene is a deadly scene on westbound 580 near harbor way in richmond. this is video from earlier. at approximately 125, the chp says someone was walking on the freeway. that person was then hit and killed by a driver. it's unclear what the person was doing in the roadway, but once again, the area has been cleared at this hour. back to the desk, amanda. >> thank you. are you headed out for out of town for memorial day? well, so are millions of others. it could be the busiest that we've seen in almost 20 years. triple a says nearly 44

million people will be driving or flying somewhere during the holiday weekend. and it all kicks off now. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez live at sfo. good morning, gloria. >> good morning to you reggie. you know it is pretty busy here at sfo. you can see behind me quite a bit of people checking in for their flights this morning. so if you are going to be flying definitely want to come out here early. an airport spokesperson tells me this memorial day weekend they're expecting more than 750,000 travelers. that's over 98% of what they saw pre-pandemic. in 2019, the editor in chief of a travel website explains why she thinks that is. we are still in that post pandemic kind of revenge travel situation. >> we all still remember it wasn't that many years ago where we couldn't go out and spend time with our family and friends. uh- either this holiday weekend or in the summer, so people are really still going out there. they are, you know,

taking advantage of the long weekend. >> and here's a look at forecasted flights. the faa says it's expecting memorial day weekend to be the busiest since 2010, with more than 53,000 flights today and more than 50,000 tomorrow. and if you are going to be flying between now and monday reminder just check in with your airline before you come to the airport to make sure your flight is leaving on time. live at sfo gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> morning. the power is back on at uc berkeley just before 630 last night. the power went out in about 50 buildings on campus. electricians spent hours trying to restore power. that happened at 1215 this morning. classes are expected to resume this morning at christopher high school in gilroy, after a student was arrested for stabbing another student. it happened yesterday. staff put the school on lockdown after a fight broke out between the

students around lunchtime. this video was sent to abc seven by a classmate. you can see that knife is there on the floor of that boy's locker room. that's where the fight started. investigators say one student pulled out a knife and stabbed the other student. that victim was taken to a local hospital, and the district is now offering counseling for students at a nearly $90,000 heist. >> that's what contra costa county fair organizers say happened outside this antioch bank around 2 a.m. monday. they say two fair workers left. fair grounds went about a mile and a half to the bank to make the deposit. when someone robbed them of the cash. abc seven news spoke with the president of the county fair board of directors. he says he was not the one making the day to day calls at the fair, and now he's demanding answers. >> you never send an unarmed citizen to a bank at a wee hours of the day, when the bank's not even open and expect us to make a deposit. >> he says the robbery could impact the fair's music

headliners and animal attractions in the future. police have not released any information about the suspect or if this crime was planned or random. >> this morning we are hearing from former oakland police chief laurent armstrong about why he wants a seat on oakland city council. if you are watching abc seven mornings yesterday, you heard about his plans to enter the race. mid morning. he did it walking into oakland city hall, filling out the paperwork. armstrong is a west oakland native and now lives in district seven, and he's running for the at large council seat, which represents the entire city. >> i could serve beyond, you know, law enforcement, beyond the police department that i could continue to give back to my community. that's given so much to me. >> armstrong joins a race with eight other candidates. he says his top priorities are public safety, homelessness, improving oakland's image. you may remember armstrong was fired from his job as police chief more than a year ago. now he is

suing the city for wrongful termination, but says the lawsuit will not impact this race. >> today, oakland mayor shengtao is set to reveal her plans to fix a growing budget crisis in her city. a key component is expected to be the landmark deal to sell off the city's stake in the coliseum site. we first told you about this massive deal yesterday morning. it's worth more than $100 million. abc seven news reporter ryan curry got a closer look at what the future of the coliseum could look like, swinging for the fences on a project that could forever change the coliseum grounds. >> mayor shengtao announced the city will sell its share of the coliseum land. the buyer, the african american sports and entertainment group, this is a moment where east oakland is going to change. founder ray bobbitt says his organization is ready to transform the land into something that can reshape not just east oakland, but the entire city. >> the coliseum site really represents an incredible opportunity to do to revitalize this community without displacing and without

gentrification. >> at wednesday's announcement, students at castlemont high school showed their renderings of what could come aasg says. they could build new housing, entertainment centers and new sports arenas. plus $105 million is money the city needs while facing a tight budget. it is good timing, but i would say it's not good timing. >> the sense they should have been happened decades ago, right? we're talking about a parcel in in a space where we have the highest amount of people who are on public assistance. >> this sale is the latest chapter surrounding the future of oakland sports. after the baseball season. for the first time since the 1960s, no team will call the coliseum home. >> it's about the heart and mind and soul that sports fans of all generations have put into these teams in oakland, and that's being ripped away from their grasp. >> the oakland roots and oakland ballers have both explored playing at the coliseum. however, both these teams play in minor league divisions much different than the three teams that used to play here. chris

dobbins, who used to sit on the coliseum board, now runs save oakland sports. he believes oakland should not just be a minor league town, but after having been having, you know, professional football, professional basketball, winning a number of championships in oakland to going back to just having minor league teams. >> no. >> so how do you get an nfl team to move back to oakland, or an nba team to play at the arena again? dobbins says it's not easy. >> it takes people with money and, you know, let's i hope that the african american sports entertainment group can make that happen. >> but with this deal, it's possible the first steps towards achieving those goals are being taken in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> thanks, ryan. 509 this morning we're looking at our okay camera this morning. we have clear skies around the entire bay, shoreline and inland. right now, the only area reporting any sort of cloud cover currently is half moon bay. so at the airport right now, we're at 54 degrees. we have plenty of stars out there. in fact, moonlit sky, as you can see, that full moon on the western horizon that moon is slowly setting this morning.

it's beautiful out there. a light breeze out of the south and humidity is high. it feels quite pleasant. so today's a huge travel day before the memorial day holiday weekend. traveling to socal. no problems. looking lovely there. new york city though we will have some scattered showers and thunderstorms. so hubs like laguardia, jfk, newark may experience some delays later on this afternoon as those thunderstorms move through. we're looking great in chicago, denver a low chance of showers. atlanta looking great. seattle looking great. honolulu looking lovely. so it's really only the northeast that will deal with some inclement weather. here's future weather today. it's going to be a nice day once again. mild sunshine by noon uh- mid 60s, mid 70s and later today maybe 1 or 2 degrees cooler compared to yesterday. but temperatures are still above average for this time of the year. mild sunshine continues 71 in oakland today, 77 in san jose. we'll hit 65 in the city, 81 in santa rosa, 80 in concord. a bit of a breeze picks up this afternoon, gusting over 20mph at times, peaking around 4 p.m. so the next three days it is sunny

on the holiday weekend. get ready for severe weather. major cities from dallas to boston are facing storms, and amanda, this is coming after at least 20 tornadoes reported in six states in the last day. >> now kumasi those tornadoes were all reported in the upper midwest in just a 24 hour period. the worst damage is in the small town of greenfield, iowa. wind speeds hit more than

135mph, killing several people. wind turbines snapped in half, some even caught fire. spray paint shows homes and cars that have already been searched. >> there's just all your memories and your own home. everything that you worked so hard to build just gone. >> so i got all the kids and went downstairs into this room. the only room left standing, and just kind of huddled in the corner and it got really quiet and then really loud, and then everything was gone. >> fema will be on the ground today in iowa. the white house says it's ready to provide support as needed. more severe weather is expected to stretch into today as the memorial weekend. memorial day weekend, i should say, gets underway. back to you at the desk, reggie. >> all right. thanks so much to today. we're expecting louisville police to release video footage of golfer scottie scheffler's arrest during last week's pga championship. the department said it would also

provide an update on its internal investigation surrounding the case. police arrested scheffler after he attempted to steer around traffic congestion. now the traffic backup was caused by a deadly crash that morning. scheffler faces several charges, including second degree assault of a police officer. investigators say his car dragged the police officer, who tried to get him to stop. >> california could extend the statute of limitations for prosecution of domestic violence from five years to 15 years. this proposal is gaining attention again after disturbing videos released showing sean diddy combs physically assaulting his former girlfriend on hotel surveillance video back in 2016, the l.a. district attorney's office said earlier this week it can't prosecute combs for that assault because it's outside the statute of limitations. the new bill was introduced by state senator susan rubio. >> i am a survivor of domestic violence, so i have been very vocal about protecting victims.

>> the bill has already passed in the senate. if it's approved, it will become law january 1st of next year. >> on the peninsula, the mayor of redwood city is taking action after a fire at a recycling facility sent the smoke as far away as santa clara county. this happened at ss metal on the redwood city port around three yesterday afternoon. workers next door say they had to put on respirators because of all the smoke. abc seven news has been following incidents involving sims metal for years. in 2013, two fires broke out at the recycling plant, prompting public officials to issue more than a dozen safety measures in order to prevent future fires. it's something mayor jeff g says might have to happen again. >> i'm disappointed that it happened again, especially since it happened the first time when i was serving as mayor. >> in a statement, sims metal said the health and welfare of the community is an immediate priority. >> how bad is your commute?

hayward oakland san francisco just ranked in the top 30 cities when it comes to the worst commutes, and you can see all three are averaging about an hour a day or more than 240 hours a year. that's ten days a year. there is some good news, though. some commute times are going down in the bay area. the u.s. census bureau american community survey looked at the top ten cities where commutes have decreased from 2012 to 2022. fremont was number one in the nation, with drivers saving about 27 hours a year over the past decade. san francisco came in at number six with a 17 hour drop, and in sunnyvale, drivers have shaved off 14 hours of commute time. >> a lot changed in the bay area between 2012 and 2022. the biggest thing, of course, was, the pandemic. and that introduced, the widespread acceptance of remote work.

>> john goodwin from the metropolitan transportation commission says more express lanes and continued emphasis on public transportation have also likely contributed to lighter commutes. >> let's talk about these birds. today. we're going to know the names of the four falcon chicks living on cal's clock tower. there were four group options. the first was earth related, so aurora eclipse, solstice, and equinox. the second bay area native plants alder, madrone, aster and myrtle. there is also a group of characters from beverly cleary books ramona, henry, beezus and ralph. by the way, cleary graduated from berkeley, so that's the connection there. the last group included name suggestions from kids pam the funkstress, lucky tyra and sunny. we also have, you know, that i was really campaigning against the ramona characters the other day, and then was made to feel bad because someone told me that was came up. it was our producer,

temperatures very similar to yesterday in the upper 50s. but later on this afternoon, you'll notice once again we'll have those winds picking up around 4 or 5:06 p.m. that's when they'll peak and will gust between 20 and 40mph with the strongest winds along the coast. so just be aware of that. it's a breezy, if not gusty afternoon on the way, but it feels very nice out there. we'll have full sunshine temperatures again. 60s and 70s around the bay shoreline are warm spots going into the low 80s. your pollen count is unchanged from yesterday. tree pollen is still high the evening planner will show you our marine layer comes back a lot faster than yesterday. we're already seeing it surge back in from the coast closer to 7 p.m, so be aware of that. we do cool off pretty quickly this evening looking at overnight lows. it's a mix of stars and clouds, temperatures dipping into the upper 40s and lower 50s as we head into friday. friday we kick off bottlerock in napa. it's a really nice looking forecast. we have a lot of sunshine tomorrow for the first day of the festival. 72 degrees. the

but that won't be the case once the three day music, wine, food and brew festival kicks off at number seven, you may notice more ev chargers popping up at airbnb rentals. >> airbnb has teamed up with chargepoint to offer host discounts to buy and install chargers at their homes. airbnb says more customers are searching for stays that include car chargers, as the strike against the uc system enters its fourth day today at uc santa cruz, students are now wondering if their graduation is in jeopardy. >> grad workers and teaching assistants started the strike on monday over how the uc system has handled the pro-palestinian protests and encampments at its schools. the strike has been authorized until june 30th because most people on strike are the ones who handle final grades. many students may not be able to graduate on time. those on strike say the ball is in the university's court. >> is it the case that they want the class of 2024 to, like, exit the university with these

memories of, like, graduation being disrupted in this way, they really could fix it if they wanted to in the short term. >> uc santa cruz says it will continue remote instruction for the rest of the week. >> there is an online petition asking uc berkeley to change back some of its recently updated branding. the b you see in the middle here is now what shows on the school's social media pages. in the past, it's been a more stylized b or a c for cal that you see on the right. well, this change is a part of a larger rebranding, and you can see the full new logo in the middle here. the school says the b is only intended for small spaces where the full logo is too hard to read. officials say they made all of these changes to better connect the berkeley and cal identities, which have co-existed, but caused confusion. alumni and co-founder of boba guys, andrew chow, says he thinks it's leading to more confusion. >> and everyone's like, oh, what's that? b i've never seen that before, versus if a cal

script was there, people know that's uc berkeley. >> the school says more than a quarter of the people surveyed in the bay area did know that berkeley and cal were the same university. additionally, they say more than two thirds of people thought berkeley and cal were different institutions. >> to be fair, i used to think that i mean, before i lived here, so no judgment here. please don't come after me in judgment. >> a college bound high school senior from oakland has quite a decision to make. >> helms at a geca will have to narrow down his college choices from a list of more than 120 schools. helms has a suitcase as you can see here, that is spilling over with all the letters, the acceptance letters, he and his dad, chris, joined our 530 streaming show yesterday to talk about his options. >> so my dream is to become a professional musician and i know that's going to take a lot of

work and determination to make that dream come true. and by applying to so many schools, i sort of wanted to prove to myself that that is something i'm really passionate about and i'm willing to make come true. >> helms has a 3.9 grade point average at head-royce high school, where he's part of an a cappella singing group. oh yes, we love that, his dad says. while a music degree isn't required for pop stardom, it also can't hurt. >> i do not want him to have this illusion of seeing people as superstars and think, oh, i can just go do that without really thinking hard about the amount of work required to make it happen. >> oh. helms applied to 157 universities, so a few did say no. can you imagine who he's also earned a staggering $5.3 million in scholarships. >> okay, you are berkeley options. congratulations. this is exciting.

532. we're going to take a look at drive times live drive. times tracy to dublin 44 minutes 17 minutes from san rafael to san francisco. and then that trip from antioch to concord is going to take you 17 minutes back to the desk. thanks, amanda. >> at airports and on roads, it is expected to be a record setting memorial day weekend. and all of it kicks off today. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live at sfo with a glimpse of what you can expect if you're flying out this morning. and gloria, what's it look like right now? >> good morning kumasi. well, it is pretty busy out here. a lot of people starting to arrive here for their early morning flights. you can see behind me as people go to the kiosks checking, get their luggage tags and get ready to board their flights and airports. airport spokesperson tells me that today through monday, they're expecting more than 750,000 travelers. that's about 8% more than last year. here's triple a's projection for travel from today through monday, nearly 44 million people will travel, with

38 million traveling by car and 3.5 million by plane. triple a vp says it signals a busy summer travel season ahead. i talked to the editor in chief of a travel site, and she says it's time to book that summer travel. if you haven't done it already, the best time to book for summer travel is now. >> the earlier the better. we're already kind of, you know, past that prime, that prime booking window. but i will say one tip i do have is that you know, the olympics are going to be in paris this summer. flights are very inexpensive right now to go to paris directly after the games. so you heard it here first. >> so good tip right there. she also recommends booking early flights with less chance of cancellations. and this all comes as flight prices are increasing slightly. but i guess a lot of people still want to do that. memorial day travel triple

a data shows that there's a 1 to 2% increase in prices for those domestic flights, and some of the top destinations i looked it up for this memorial day weekend are las vegas, also orlando and los angeles. live at sfo gloria rodriguez abc seven news. >> gloria thank you. and now we talk about the roads. if your holiday travel plans involve a car, there are some specific times you're going to want to know about. a man is breaking down the best and the worst times to leave the house over the next couple of days. i'm >> hi, reggie. bay area roads will certainly be busy. triple a is noting convenience and flexibility are two main reasons so many people plan to travel by car here at home. eastbound i-80, san francisco to the area near highway 37 specifically is expected to see the most congestion this holiday weekend. if you can avoid the east shore freeway, especially on friday at 11 a.m, it will be a mess during that peak, traffic period. what would typically be about an hour drive that stretch encompassing

the fire is under investigation. >> a surge of california highway patrol officers into the east bay has led to hundreds of arrests and stolen vehicles being recovered, according to the governor's office. chp has helped to recover more than 700 stolen cars and made more than 350 arrests since february. that's when the state began tempoorary searches in alameda county. there's no word on how many people have been charged or convicted, though. the governor's office says the arrests are linked to organized crime, carjackings and other major felonies. >> this morning, a plea to governor newsom to change his mind. mayors from some of california's biggest cities asking the governor to keep funding for a grant program that provides money to local governments to fight homelessness. the homeless housing assistance and prevention program, or hap, has helped 42,000 californians find long term housing. funding for the program will be cut after this year, as part of the governor's plan to balance the

like the process to buy tickets for concerts or sports games has gotten out of control. today, the justice department and several u.s. states are expected to step in, and amanda is at the live desk with the move that could potentially transform the entire live concert industry. >> yeah, reggie, today, the justice department is expected to file a lawsuit alleging antitrust violations by live nation, the group that oversees ticketmaster. now it came under extra scrutiny two years ago when many were blocked out of chances to buy tickets for the taylorswift eras tour. customers accused ticketmaster and live nation of speculative sales and hidden fees. the company blames scalpers and bots pretending to be human customers. but live nation's president said the company has been seeking common ground with the justice department. he addressed live nation's use of exclusive contracts, which require a venue to use ticketmaster for a certain number of years. he says the company has no issues with any venue that says they want to be non exclusive, but he

over last year's disastrous train derailment in ohio. it is not clear how the money will be divided and how much of it will go to the residents impacted by this, but so far, it appears the closer people are to where the derailment happened, the more money they will receive. initial documents suggest families could get up to $70,000 for property damage. up to $10,000 for injuries if they live within two miles of the disaster. this morning, new concerns about the bird flu and other rare human case has been confirmed after an outbreak in dairy cattle. authorities say a michigan farm worker has recovered from mild symptoms. back in march, a farm worker in texas was diagnosed with the first human case of bird flu tied to dairy cows. both patients worked with cows and both reported eye infections, with bird flu outbreaks in cattle now reported in nine states and dozens of herds, experts say the infection is likely to spread even more. we need to maintain testing,
