>> david: i'm david muir. for all of us here at "20/20" and abc news, good night. uh- saturday showcase for oakland, where leaders are trying to change the narrative by showing off its culture at one of its most recognizable spots. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. oakland is looking to not only improve its image, but build a better bay area at the same time. and once again, the town is hosting another concert at lake merritt, and police will be there to keep an eye on things just in case. as abc seven news reporter ryan curry explains, organizers are hoping that showcasing one of oakland's landmarks will attract more visitors.
11:01 pm
>> an early friday evening on lake merritt. it's cold and breezy, but it's nothing to stop the locals. >> i've lived in the area for about 13 years, and all the cool stuff that happens in east bay kind of happens around here, but i do see it's always popping over here on the weekends. >> they look upon lake merritt with joy, and it's probably going to be popping again this weekend. on saturday, lake merritt will be the home of an afternoon concert. it's called love lake merritt. >> we could see things changing and becoming better, but perception is hard to fight. kimberly miller is the executive director of fairyland at lake merritt. >> she is one of several organizing the event where the focus is to bring as many people to the lake as possible. >> we've had a tough year here in oakland, but we're all about positive vibes and we want to bring art and culture, which is what oakland is known for down to the lake. from music to visual art to dance, to make sure to remind oaklanders what it's all about. >> we see the walkers, we see the dog walkers, the joggers. so many people who utilize lake merritt. but what miller and
11:02 pm
those we spoke with hope tomorrow's event brings is that it showcases lake merritt as the cultural center of oakland. >> i kind of feel like this is the central park of the bay area . i mean, it's one of the cooler areas where you've got like a mix of out natural outdoor amenities and the trees and the lake and the restaurants. and there's really not another place in the bay that has that. >> earlier this week, a huge crowd came to lake merritt for a different concert. miller says those concerts and the one on saturday do great things for the local economy. >> more people at the lake, more people at fairyland, more people at the oakland public library, which is also one of our partners. more people going to the museum to see art, more people going to the restaurants that circle the lake, more people just taking advantage of what the lake has to offer. >> some call lake merritt a city treasure. >> it's great that it's a public land space that people can use, and it's a space where it's, really accessible to a lot of people. >> they hope saturday will encourage more people to consistently come back. in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven

news. >> well, the holiday weekend is here. what will the weather be like tomorrow for that event? a meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> and dan, it's going to start off a little damp and gray. so let me show you a live picture right now from our exploratorium camera where you will notice it is pretty cloudy outside. we've already seen some mist and drizzle. and here's a look at your planner in the morning. gray and drizzly temperatures in the 50s by noontime. it's a mix of sun and clouds below average temperatures mid 50s to low 70s. breezy and cooler in the evening. just to give you a quick idea of what you can expect out, how about a little bit of a warm up for your sunday and your monday? i'll be back down with a full look at the memorial day weekend forecast. coming right up. >> all right. very good sandy. thank you. we'll touch base again in a few minutes. well, if your holiday plans include a trip to the beach, there's one in the bay area. you might have second thoughts about visiting even though the water might look enticing, it's what's in it that could be cause for concern. abc seven news reporter lauren

martinez with why a beach in pacifica is likely one of the most polluted, not just in the bay area, but the country. >> new data is revealing questionable water quality at some of california's beaches. surfrider foundation just released their 2023 clean water report. high levels of bacteria were found at three beaches in california linda mar in pacifica was one of them. sean sewell says he swims here often. >> i guess just a little surprising because the water always looks very clean and always just like, yeah, it always feels super nice. >> surf riders, blue water task force sampled from over 500 sites throughout the us. >> i think number one, it's, you know, being informed, laura diaz with surfrider foundation says the report is to build awareness that stormwater and old sewage pipes contribute to water quality at the beach. pet waste. you know, if you don't, you know, scoop your poop when you take your dog out, then that gets washed down into the water
11:05 pm
and all all this stuff, you know, pollution ends up in the creek and eventually flows down to the beach and that's where we're we get concerned. >> the report said the consistent, polluted san pedro creek could be contributing to high levels of bacteria. at linda mar, it's good to know what it's from and hopefully, like we can do something about it. is the water safe to swim in? diaz said people need to turn to their local water quality information. a reminder before you head to a beach this summer, you think about like, is it sunny or is it raining? >> you know what are the wave conditions? are there strong rips? oh yeah, water quality. see, that's the thing too. >> depending on the location, the data from the report will go to local officials like city councils or water boards. >> it is a concern i have little kids and they love to you know, come visit the beach and play in the water. i told her. maybe just your feet versus the whole body in pacifica. >> lauren martinez, abc seven

news. >> all right, ladies, an unwelcome summer holiday tradition at lake tahoe. vacationers trashing the place with litter all over the beaches sometimes. but as we head into the memorial day weekend, there will actually be less beach to make a mess of. lake tahoe is expected to fill up this summer for the first time in five years, water managers expected to hit full capacity in about a month or so. it's a good sign for our water, but it also means more of the beaches will be underwater. >> it means perhaps our beaches might be a little bit. you might be a little closer to your friend, or closer to your your new friend. >> water managers are watching a usgs gauge to see when the lake levels peak. a full lake typically has enough water supply for three years, even when the following winters are not so wet. well, a rough day on the roads to start the long holiday weekend, but the bay bridge toll plaza is finally clear tonight. as you look live.

it was a parking lot pretty much all day. after a big rig fire shut down part of the bridge, a truck carrying oranges caught fire near treasure island. that was about 9:00 this morning. it took hours for crews to clear up what was left of the big rig, and all of those oranges on the road. the chp thinks a brake problem may have started the fire. the driver was not injured. well, down in san jose, a deadly crash stopped traffic on 101 this afternoon, the chp says a 22 year old man from san jose was going the wrong direction and crashed head on into a big rig. he died in that crash in the east bay. the effort to recall oakland mayor sheng tao is moving forward today. the group behind the drive announced that they've collected 30,000 signatures, 5000 more than needed to get the recall on the november ballot. the group, called oust or oakland united to recall sheng tao points to crime and the firing of police chief laurent armstrong as two of the main reasons behind their effort.
11:08 pm
>> voters in oakland will be able to let the mayor know that we are not pleased with her leadership. >> oust members say they want to collect at least 10,000 more signatures before turning them over to the registrar of voters. critics of this effort say tao has not been given enough time on the job, and contend that many of the city's problems predate tao's election. in 2022, there was increased security today at skyline high school in oakland after a shooting right after yesterday's graduation injured three people. the chairs were where graduates sat were still on the field this morning. police say two groups got into a fight in the parking lot as people were leaving the ceremony, things escalated, which led to shots being fired. the victims were all taken to the hospital. thank goodness all are expected to survive. one person has been arrested and several others detained. and new developments with the story we first told you about last night
11:09 pm
here at 11 san jose police have arrested a man and are accusing him of killing his mother. the woman's body was found inside a home on shadow dance drive yesterday morning. investigators say her son was also inside at the time and officers took him into custody. police have not released any other details about this case. we're building a better bay area is our daily mission here at abc seven, as you know and tonight we have a breakthrough to share in a story we brought you earlier this week. leaders in fremont have adopted the city's first homelessness response plan. it calls for more resources to prevent people from losing their homes in the first place. they also want to more than quadruple the city's number of rapid rehousing beds and expand resources for people living in rvs still to come here. ozempic is the hottest craze in dieting right now, but new research has found it could have a potentially life saving benefit as well. we'll have that story. it's graduation night for san francisco state and the stars were out. you're going to hear from benjamin bratt as he is
