report that might make you think twice about a certain beach here in the bay area you visit, then nintendo betting on san francisco. why? some say the move could bring a big financial boost for union square. good morning everybody. it's saturday, may 25th. i'm stephanie sierra. before we get to all of that, meteorologist francis dinglasan is here this morning. and francis, how's the forecast looking this weekend? >> it is looking cool for today but things will change for memorial day. so that's some good news for the holiday weekend. a look at live doppler seven shows some widespread cloud cover. even had to use my windshield wipers this morning in san francisco, where we've already had five hundredths of an inch of measurable precipitation over the last 24 hours. here's your day planner. so still cloudy and breezy in the morning with most temperatures in the 50s, and by lunchtime still mostly cloudy. will be gusty this afternoon, but that will help push the clouds away, so we'll get some partly sunny conditions and

partly cloudy conditions. inland areas in the low 70s around the bay, low 60s and at the coast mid 50s. i'll tell you about that. warm up with the accuweather seven day forecast coming up stephanie. >> all right francis thank you. new this morning. one person died in a hit and run crash in oakland. it happened near san pablo avenue and shamrock drive. the area was blocked off overnight as police stayed on scene to investigate. right now, video shows what appears to be the suspected car involved, found about two miles away. it's not known right now if any arrests have been made. today another big event is expected to bring crowds of people to oakland's popular lake merritt. the town is looking to not only improve its image, but build a better bay area to. police will be there to keep an eye on the event just in case. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with organizers. >> in early friday evening on lake merritt, it's cold and breezy, but it's nothing to stop the locals. >> i've lived in the area for

about 13 years, and all the cool stuff that happens in east bay kind of happens around here, but i do see it's always popping over here. >> on the weekends. >> they look upon lake merritt with joy, and it's probably going to be popping again this weekend. on saturday, lake merritt will be the home of an afternoon concert. it's called love lake merritt. >> we could see things changing and becoming better, but perception is hard to fight. >> kimberly miller is the executive director of fairyland at lake merritt. she is one of several organizing the event where the focus is to bring as many people to the lake as possible. >> we've had a tough year here in oakland, but we're all about positive vibes and we want to bring art and culture, which is what oakland is known for down to the lake, from music to visual art to dance, to make sure to remind oaklanders what it's all about, we see the walkers, we see the dog walkers, the joggers, so many people who utilize lake merritt. >> but what miller and those we spoke with hope tomorrow's event brings is that it showcases lake merritt as the cultural center of oakland. >> i kind of feel like this is the central park of the bay

area. i mean, it's one of the cooler areas where you've got like a mix of out natural outdoor amenities and the trees and the lake and the restaurants, and there's really not another place in the bay that has that. >> earlier this week, a huge crowd came to lake merritt for a different concert. miller says those concerts and the one on saturday do great things for the local economy. >> more people at the lake, more people at fairyland, more people at the oakland public library, which is also one of our partners. more people going to the museum to see art, more people going to the restaurants that circle the lake, more people just taking advantage of what the lake has to offer. >> some call lake merritt a city treasure. >> it's great that it's a public land space that people can use, and it's a space where it's, really accessible to a lot of people. >> they hope saturday will encourage more people to consistently come back. in oakland. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> happening today, former oakland police chief leronne armstrong is kicking off his council member campaign. he is launching his campaign at

mcclymonds high school, where he graduated while growing up in west oakland, he's running for the at large council seat, which represents the entire city. armstrong was fired from his job as police chief over a year ago, and he's now suing the city for wrongful termination. he says the lawsuit will not impact this race. the effort to recall oakland mayor xiang tao is moving forward. the group behind the drive announced they've collected some 30,000 signatures. that's 5000 more than the required amount to get the recall on the november ballot, the group oust or oakland united to recall xiang tao points to crime and the firing of former chief armstrong as two of the main reasons behind this effort. >> voters in oakland will be able to let the mayor know that we are not pleased with her leadership. >> oust members say they want to collect at least 10,000 more signatures before turning them over to the registrar of voters. critics of the effort say tao

hasn't been given enough time on the job, and they contend many of the city's problems predate tao's election in 2022. oakland unified added increased security at skyline high school after a shooting erupted after their graduation ceremony. this week. three people were hurt, police say two groups got into a fight in the parking lot as people were leaving the ceremony on thursday, things escalated, which led to shots being fired. the victims were all taken to the hospital and they're all expected to survive. one person has been arrested and several others detained. if your holiday plans include a trip to the beach, there's one in the bay area you should know about. even though the water might look enticing, it's what's in it that's now raising eyebrows. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez takes us to pacifica, home to one of the most polluted beaches in the country. >> new data is revealing questionable water quality at

some of california's beaches. surfrider foundation just released their 2023 clean water report, high levels of bacteria were found at three beaches in california. linda mar in pacifica was one of them. sean sewell says he swims here often. >> i guess just a little surprising because the water always looks very clean and always just like, yeah, it always feels super nice. >> surf riders, blue water task force sampled from over 500 sites throughout the u.s. >> i think number one, it's, you know, being informed. laura diaz with surfrider foundation says the report is to build awareness that stormwater and old sewage pipes contribute to water quality at the beach. pet waste. you know, if you don't, you know, scoop your poop when you take your dog out, then that gets washed down into the water and all all this stuff, you know , pollution ends up in the creek and eventually flows down to the beach. and that's where we're we get concerned. the report said the consistently polluted san

pedro creek could be contributing to high levels of bacteria at linda mar. >> it's good to know what it's from and hopefully like we can do something about it. >> is the water safe to swim in? diaz said people need to turn to their local water quality information. a reminder before you head to a beach this summer, you think about like, is it sunny or is it raining? >> you know, what are the wave conditions? are there strong rips? oh yeah. water quality. that's the thing too. >> depending on the location, the data from the report will go to local officials like city councils or water boards. >> it is a concern. i have little kids and they love to, you know, come visit the beach and play in the water. i told her. maybe just your feet versus the whole body. >> in pacifica. lauren martinez, abc seven news well, speaking of beaches, it's the worst kind of summer holiday tradition in lake tahoe. >> vacation ers trashing the place with litter all over the

sandy beaches. but as we head into this memorial day weekend, there will actually be less beach to make a mess of lake tahoe is expected to fill up this summer for the first time in five years. water managers expect it will hit full capacity in about a month. it's a good sign for our water, but it also means more of the beaches will be underwater. >> it means perhaps our beaches might be a little bit. you might be a little closer to your friend, or closer to your your new friend. >> water managers are watching a usgs gauge to see when the lake levels will peak, and a full lake typically has enough water supply for three years, even when the following winters aren't so wet. all right, let's take a peek outside. hi, frances. >> hi, stephanie. good morning everyone. we are starting off with some clouds, even some mist and drizzle, especially along the coast and on some of the higher elevations. and as we show you live, look outside. and

welcome back. here's a live look from our exploratorium camera. looking at the san francisco skyline. it's 512. santa clara county leaders are calling on the state to investigate the parent company of regional medical center, located in east san jose. political leaders, advocates and health care workers sent a letter to attorney general rob bonta. they're urging him to look into what they claim are, quote, predatory practices of the hospital corporation of america. in february, the company

announced plans to close rbc's trauma center stemi program for cardiac arrest treatments. back in august. >> this is not just an east san jose issue. the ripple effects of this closure will be felt across the county. everyone that accesses health care in our county should be concerned about this. >> last month, the santa clara county board of supervisors called on the state public health department to keep the hospital open. according to the county, mmc sees about 2400 trauma patients each year. a large number are on medi-cal or our insurer uninsured. santa clara county health officials are launching a plan to get rid of an aggressive mosquito spotted in east san jose. the vector control district detected 12 female adult aegypti mosquitoes, and they've been in the area since april. now setting traps the mosquitoes are known to carry the zika virus, yellow fever and other illnesses. east san jose

residents are urged to get rid of spaces where the bugs might linger, like standing bodies of water. pregnant and elderly residents and those with compromised immune systems are most at risk if bitten by these mosquitoes. all right. up north now in san francisco, here's a new question being posed could super mario help energize downtown san francisco? well, nintendo seems to think so. the video game giant plans to open a store in union square, and this would be its second one in the u.s. abc seven news reporter luz pena has what we can expect. >> nintendo is coming to san francisco. its new home, union square. >> yeah, this is great news with nintendo's. who doesn't like a nintendo, a nintendo store in union square in san francisco is fantastic. >> details on the san francisco nintendo store are still unknown, but the video game company's first us location, located in new york city, could be giving us a glimpse into what the san francisco store could look like in new york. it's a

two story building with nintendo games, merchandise, and all the consoles. union square has a space for a similar look. >> you know, it's a great psychological boost. it's a great financial boost, and it really tells us that union square is still alive. it is still vital. it's still attractive. this is the second nintendo experiential store in the united states. so it's really a breath of fresh air. >> supervisor aaron peskin represents the area where union square is located. he says they're focusing on making the area safer to attract more businesses. >> my belief is that nintendo, of course, will have their own on site security. but san francisco has been very clear that we have devoted resources of law enforcement in that area of additional ambassadors. we have a police substation at union square. we've been paying overtime for law enforcement at union square. it is clean. it is safe. >> the union square alliance has been pushing for more storefronts at union square. the president of the san francisco chamber of commerce said 32

businesses have recently opened here, but union square has a number of different restaurants that have opened high end retail stores rolex, patek philippe, commercial, real estate services firm cushman and wakefield represent the majority of the commercial spaces in the city. they are noticing a promising trend. >> i'd say we're now at the point where there's a lot more tenants coming in. there's deals that have been done some time ago, but you don't see it until they actually open. a recent one that just opened is breitling. >> and so what should we expect? what else is coming to union square? >> so i think you should expect to see a lot more stores opening this year in particular. >> i think you're also going to see some other tenants relocating, expanding and driving by union square. >> you can still see some for at least signs. i asked cushman and wakefield about this. they said there are many stores already under contract, despite having the for lease signs out there projecting at least six more

businesses to open this year in union square. luz pena abc seven news san francisco state held its commencement ceremony for the class of 2024 at oracle park. >> nearly 7000 san francisco state graduates and thousands of loved ones packed the ballpark to celebrate actor and sf native benjamin bratt received an honorary degree. the law and order and modern family star thanked his teachers at lowell high school and called the honorary doctorate a dream come true. >> with this honor, you have fulfilled two lifelong dreams. first, my latina mothers wish to be able to call one of her children doctor and second, my boyhood fantasy come true. the chance to deal from the same field as my hometown heroes, the san francisco giants. >> oh that's amazing. well no major protests interrupted the ceremony, but we did see a few palestinian flags in the crowd. now to one of california's most iconic bands this morning, the beach boys are sharing a whole

new perspective on their sound. god only knows what i'd be without you. the new documentary, the beach boys, is now out on disney+ and the film includes extensive new interviews with two of the surviving band members. they say it was emotional to see all the old footage and reminisce about their old days on the road. >> i think it really comes across that there still is that love and will always be, and that's what gave rise to this world class harmony. >> yeah. truly iconic. brian wilson, the mastermind of the beach boys sound, makes limited appearances in this film. wilson has dementia and his mental state has declined in recent months. disney is the parent company of abc seven. well, frances, i've had surfin usa in my head ever since reading this. this morning. it's fitting for a holiday weekend. how's the forecast shaping up? >> well, it actually feels really cool out there,

especially right now. in fact, i grabbed my winter coat yesterday so the temperatures are definitely on the cool side. we're showing you live doppler seven. we're waking up to extensive cloud cover, even some mist and drizzle, especially near the beaches, and visibility is limited along the coast. half moon bay down to three miles right now. elsewhere visibility is better. winds have been really gusty overnight and right now they're still pretty breezy at 24 miles an hour in san francisco, 20 miles in concord. they will pick up again this afternoon. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge where you see lots of fog. it's been wet on the roadways, too. in san francisco, where it's currently 51 degrees. oakland is 53, hayward 55. san jose milder 58. redwood city 54 and half moon bay 52. and this time i'm showing you mount tam because we are seeing a little bit of break in the cloud cover as we look towards the bay, but it is pretty chilly in santa rosa and petaluma, only the upper 40s right now and low to mid 50s for other parts of the north bay, like napa in the east bay, concord and livermore in the low

to mid 50. and here's also look at the future cast. we'll show you what's going to happen. 7:00 this morning. still extensive cloud cover with even some drizzle. the areas there of green. and then you'll notice by the lunchtime in the afternoon we'll start to see some clearing in parts of the north bay. and then by this evening, more clearing for all of us. with those breezy conditions continuing. if you are heading to bottle rack, bottle rock, grab an extra layer. it's going to feel pretty chilly today, even though it will be mostly sunny in the afternoon with a high of 68. the gusts will pick up. we'll start to cool down pretty quickly at 5:00, and then 8:00 will drop into the 50s. wind gusts will be picking up this afternoon, so they will be quite strong, especially in san francisco. so 34 miles an hour, even 30 miles an hour in oakland . and that northwest breeze is what's going to keep things on the cool side. although san jose warming up to 68, morgan hill 70 degrees on the lower part of the peninsula. look for low 60s redwood city at 62, in san francisco, only 59 degrees

today. even cooler in daly city at 56, in the north bay where you get more sunshine. we'll see some 70s in the forecast, like santa rosa and calistoga in the low 70s and in the east bay. look for low to mid 60s. oakland 62, fremont 64 degrees and also inland areas only warming up into the low 70s like brentwood and antioch. walnut creek will be 66 degrees now. we will jump ahead to memorial day monday. it is going to warm up. we'll see some 80s return to our inland neighborhoods and along and around the bay we'll see 60s to 70s. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. still below average today, with our warmest areas in the low 70s tomorrow, temperatures start to bounce back. monday will be warmer for the holiday inland areas in the low 80s around the bay look for low 70s and at the beaches. still low 50s. but then we really warm up thursday and friday. stephanie.

here's abc news reporter johnny fernandez. >> it's been a busy start to memorial day weekend with millions of people taking to the skies and the road. tsa expects over 18 million airline travelers to pass through airport security checkpoints between now and next wednesday. thursday marked a second busiest day in history, with more than 2.8 million passengers passing through checkpoints. for travelers hitting the roads, it's just as busy. triple a estimating about 30 million people will drive to and from their holiday destinations. experts urging drivers to take their time on the road. >> oftentimes, it's those people who are in a rush that can sometimes make those careless decisions while they're behind the wheel. >> travelers may also be affected by the weather this weekend as a dangerous outbreak of severe weather is expected across the heartland today, oklahoma city, wichita and kansas city could see strong

tornadoes, severe wind gusts and large hail on sunday. saint louis, indianapolis and louisville are under enhanced risk for severe weather, including tornadoes. johnny fernandez, abc news, new york >> and on top of all the travel, gas prices have been higher lately. triple a, though, is reporting it's not stopping road trips as gas prices, though, have never really been a factor in terms of keeping people home. >> triple a has always found that people will just budget around gas prices. it's certainly nice that we're not paying some astronomical number right now, but it doesn't really hold people back. >> yeah, it depends on who you ask. the average gas price in california at the moment is $5.14. the lowest prices are in yuba city at 486, and the highest price across the state is in napa at 549. today marks four years since george floyd's death in minnesota in 2020. floyd was a 46 year old, unarmed

black man who died while in police custody. his death sparked widespread protests and black lives matter movements across the country that summer. on thursday, congresswoman sheila jackson lee reintroduced the george floyd justice in policing act. the legislation was passed by the house in june of 2020, but stalled in the senate. we're also following new developments in the war in israel. the united nations has ordered israel to stop its military offensive in the southern gaza city of rafah. it's something israel said it won't do. the international court of justice also asked israel to ensure access to un fact finding missions, and to investigate allegations of genocide. it asked israel to also open the rafah border for humanitarian assistance. >> quote is not convinced that the evacuation efforts and related measures that israel affirms to have undertaken are sufficient. >> an israeli delegation will

travel to paris today. that's where the latest cease fire talks are taking place. cia director bill burns will attend a deadly and chaotic scene is playing out in a remote area of papua new guinea. more than 100 people are feared dead after a landslide buried people while they slept in the middle of the night. search and rescue crews are working to secure the area this morning, but debris blocking the main highway and the villages rural setting are hampering those efforts. >> the local people are doing whatever they can, obviously to, access those who might still be, trapped, but at this stage, with such large amount of debris, i think, you know, it's obviously they're looking at the worst case scenario so far, three bodies have been recovered. >> officials say the landslides impacted about 3900 people closer to home. now the jury was

officially sworn in for the state trial of david depape. he's already been convicted in federal court of breaking into speaker emerita nancy pelosi's san francisco home and attacking her husband, paul, with a hammer . depape faces eight charges in state court, including attempted murder, burglary, assault with a deadly weapon and threatening the family of a public official. opening statements are expected on wednesday. depape was sentenced to 30 years in federal court last week, but the sentencing has since reopened due to a court error that resentencing will happen on tuesday. the union for deputies and san francisco's jails is asking leaders to raise its starting pay as it deals with a staffing shortage. the san francisco deputy sheriffs association says jail staffing is extremely low and dangerous, fueling increasing violence by inmates. the union says the sheriff's office has more than 180 open positions. still ahead

welcome back. here's a live look outside. it's 538 this morning. we have a breakthrough to share in a story we brought you earlier this week. fremont leaders have adopted the city's first homelessness response plan . it calls for more resources to prevent people from losing their homes. they also want to more than quadruple the city's number of rapid rehousing beds and expand resources for people living in rvs. the news is mixed when it comes to your commute. a decrease in remote work is leading to a spike in commuters, and three bay area cities are in the top 30. when it comes to

who's worst. hayward was number 23 with the average person spending. get this 245 hours commuting annually. oakland was 28th with an average of 241 hours on the road, and san francisco was 29th with 240 hours. that's about ten days a year of just commuting alone. but there is some good news. abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey has part of that story. >> when it comes to one of the biggest issues plaguing bay area residents, one topic seems to always come up the traffic in the commute. >> it's just stop and go traffic everywhere, accidents, people driving fast, people in a hurry, congested and definitely congested. >> stressful from the east bay to the south bay and up the peninsula to the north bay. it takes a while to get around. people actually spend so much time stuck in traffic. annually it equates to ten days in cities like oakland and san francisco, but would you believe some commute times are actually decreasing in the bay area?

>> who's saying it's a decrease? i'm really i'm really curious. >> that would be the us census bureau american community survey. while the nationwide average has increased by two minutes in the past decade, the bay area is showing progress. when you look at the top ten cities where commutes have decreased from 2012 to 2022, fremont is first in the nation, with drivers saving about 27 more hours per year over the last decade, which means you're saving about six minutes per workday. at number six. san francisco, which saw a 17 hour dip rounding out the top ten is sunnyvale, where drivers shaved off nearly 14 hours in that span. residents we spoke with were slow to believe their time was actually being saved. >> i don't know if it's gotten worse over the last year, but it definitely has not gone down. not not even close. >> metropolitan transportation commission spokesperson john goodwin, however, was not surprised. >> a lot changed in the bay area between 2012 and 2022. the biggest thing, of course, was, the pandemic. and that introduced, the widespread
