would have played in goes on abc seven news at 430 starts right now. always live abc seven news starts right now. the unofficial start to summer isn't feeling all that summery in the bay area. chilly temps to start this memorial day weekend, but people are still finding some slivers of sun. good afternoon and thanks for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we begin with memorial day weekend traditions from the water to the skies to the roads. taking a live look at the roads tonight. and we are seeing an awful lot of wide open highways. certainly nowhere near the traffic mess rivers faced last night. plenty of people are spending their saturday at parks and beaches and in the north bay. the holiday comes with a warning to be safe, especially along the russian river. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard is live for us in santa rosa, at the spot that is very popular this holiday, cornell.

>> yeah, dion, you can say that again. the sun is out, the water is fine here at spring lake regional park. as you can see, a lot of families making this their first stop this holiday weekend. and check out that floating play structure. very cool. right up on the russian river. lifeguards sending a special alert to be safe because the water and the river is so high. >> we love the jumpy house on the water and the lagoon. >> melissa schwartz is spending part of her memorial day weekend at santa rosa spring lake regional park, where this lagoon has morphed into a summertime water park for kids. >> so far, it's nice and relaxing. the sun's out, it's warm enough to be in the water, so we're just kind of hanging out with, with our kids here. >> trung lee is watching his kids on the beach while he thinks about what to grill up for lunch. >> it's a pretty amazing area for the kids and the family to go out to have a good weekend cookout. >> hey guys, just a friendly

reminder down there. thanks for staying with your little ones because it does start to drop off. >> lifeguards are now on duty at veterans memorial beach in healdsburg this holiday weekend. the russian river is running fast and high, so it's important to be safe. >> we had an influx of rain this year, so the water levels are a lot higher, so we just ask that people take the necessary precautions. so, either don't swim if you're not comfortable swimming, maybe just dip your feet in the water, if you do decide to go for a swim, just make sure that you're wearing a life vest. or you can come here and swim near a lifeguard. >> sadly, a teenager drown on the russian river near forestville last month. first responders say he wasn't wearing a life vest. that protective gear free to anyone at this beach to use for the day. every barbecue at this park is spoken for and fired up everyone enjoying good food and sunshine after a cold, wet winter. >> kind of nice just being close to the water. i think. just getting out and relaxing, getting some sunlight. we haven't had too much chance to really enjoy it. >> so this is our first time.

surface. we've got gusts well over 20mph across much of the bay area right now, especially near the coast and bay. and that onshore flow, robust as it is, is keeping temperatures about 10 to 15 degrees below average for memorial day weekend. so right now we're looking at only 68 degrees in san rafael, 71 in santa rosa, 71 in brentwood, where you would expect to see 80s this time of the year and this time of the day, 68, in san jose. so these are our. losing my voice. these are our forecast headlines. bright, breezy and cool going into the evening hours tomorrow. mostly sunny, little warmer than today. and on monday, memorial day sunny and even warmer still. so there is reason to take hope that this weekend will not be too winter like all the way through. i'll have the complete details on the seven day accuweather forecast in just a few. just a few minutes. >> diane spencer, don't lose your voice over the summer summary. going away. oh thank you. okay well, taking a live look now from the sfo and oakland airport cameras in the middle of a busy travel period,

us airports are jam packed. the tsa says it is set a record yesterday, or it set a record yesterday for the most number of travelers screened in a single day, nearly 3 million people passed through security checkpoints at us airports. no matter where you are taking off or landing, it is busy. >> big weekend for us, kind of the kickoff of summer travel. >> so we've been in preparation for several months. >> i'm like two hours early, which is not what i do. but because of the holiday, i felt that it was important to do so. >> now, if you are driving this weekend, you will also have plenty of company. triple a predicts nearly 44 million are hitting the roads this weekend. that is the highest number since the company began forecasts in the year 2000. a 27 year old man is dead after being gunned down on the peninsula last night, police say. shots were reported in belmont at 8 p.m. friday. officers found the victim suffering from multiple wounds while in a parked car. medics tried saving his life but were

unsuccessful. the shooting happened in the area of hiller and irwin streets. investigators are asking the public for help and for home security. camera footage that may have captured the suspect. it is official former oakland police chief leronne armstrong's campaign to become the next city council member is underway. armstrong kicked things off this morning at his ama mater, mcclymonds high school in west oakland. that's where he was sworn in as police chief back in 2021. armstrong, you may remember, was fired from that job by mayor shengtao early last year. he's now suing the city for wrongful termination. armstrong and his supporters say it is time for some new leadership in oakland. >> i need you to tell them that it's a new day. i need you to tell them it's a new season. and i need you to tell them there's a new council member on the way. and his name is lauren armstrong. >> armstrong is campaigning for the council's at large seat. incumbent rebecca kaplan has not yet declared reelection. eight

candidates are vying for the spot. the filing deadline is august 9th. also happening in oakland today, a celebration of music, dance and theater designed to revitalize the city's crown jewel, lake merritt. today is kickoff of love our lake. that concert and community picnic event. this is the first of several monthly summertime weekend events at lakeside park geared toward getting visitors to the lake and its attractions. enjoy it for the summer because there's so many activities at the lake, all enjoy. >> so we really want to inspire and empower people to come down. >> today's performances included a jazz combo from the oakland school for the arts. the next big event at lake merritt is scheduled for june 22nd. new developments for a troubled prison in the east bay that just closed several lawmakers from the bay area are demanding a congressional investigation into alleged abuse at fci dublin. the women's prison closed last month after allegations of widespread sexual abuse. at least eight

employees, including a former warden and chaplain, have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. there lawmakers sent a letter yesterday to the chairs of two house committees asking them to hold hearings in investigating new abuse allegations tied to when inmates were transferred away from dublin. well, it is an essential part of building a better bay area, and today there is a new push to figure out why efforts to fight homelessness aren't paying off. the san jose spotlight reports two san jose city council members are pushing for a new audit of the city's homelessness spending. council members ben doan and arun batra want a clearer picture of how the city spent $300 million. a state audit blasted san jose last month over its failures to track its homeless programs. at a meeting last week, doan said he is fed up with the lack of progress. >> how is our city structural really set up to address the homeless? and because to me it's a failure at this point. the

♪ ♪ grace anne murray died this morning, a day after he withdrew from a tournament. the two time pga tour winner was set to play at the charles schwab cup challenge in fort worth, texas, this weekend. his management company confirmed his death, but didn't share other details. murray had dealt with alcohol and mental health issues in the past, but made a major competitive turnaround this year. the pga tour commissioner says murray's parents asked for this weekend's tournament to continue. rapper nicki minaj is calling off a concert tonight after getting arrested at amsterdams airport. she has since been released. minaj was heading from the netherlands to england when police stopped her. they accused her of having cannabis pre-rolls in her luggage. she live streamed some

the branch on 14th street is set to shut down on memorial day, and it won't be open again until november. crews are making some critical repairs, including putting in a new roof and upgrading the electrical system. today is the first of san francisco's two day carnival festival in the mission district . what makes you want to groove? it covers 17 city blocks along harrison with 400 vendors, five main stages, and dozens of local performing artists. you can come for the entertainment and the international food entry is free and it runs until 6 p.m. today and kicks off again tomorrow with a parade at 930. the festival is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m, and hopefully it is not going to be drizzly like this morning. was spencer drizzly this morning? >> the low clouds contained a lot of moisture, and i saw some drizzly drops falling in my

backyard pool this morning. >> your wife called it rain and you said, no, no, i called it drizzle. >> she wins. she always does. >> the wife always should win. >> look at what's going on right now. we had mae gray really hanging around. well, not so much mae gray hanging around late, but the chilly conditions in the atmosphere, the hours are pretty cold as we have this vigorous onshore flow right now, we're looking at gusts between 22 and 26mph near the coast in bay and of course, that makes it feel even cooler than it really is. but there has been a little bit of a warm up since yesterday at this time, in locations over in the east bay and south of the golden gate up in the north bay. though many locations are cooler than at this time yesterday. so let's take a look from mount tam out over the bay 58 degrees in san francisco right now, low to mid 60s at oakland and hayward and redwood city. 68, san jose 57 at half moon bay. blue sky over the golden gate for now, but low clouds will return later in the evening. 71 degrees right now in santa rosa. that's pretty mild in fairfield, 72, but it's only in the 60s at petaluma, napa, concord and livermore. and

then we go to the futurecast showing that onshore flow continuing into the evening hours. now we'll start to see the development of a few pockets of low clouds later tonight. and then during the overnight hours after midnight. but it will all burn away by mid-morning tomorrow, leading us to another mainly sunny day overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s, so a little bit cool overnight and then tomorrow uh- mid 50s at the coast, mainly mid to upper 60s near the bay and only upper 70s inland. so it's going to be a fairly pleasant day, but not nearly so mild as you would expect for this point in the month of may. so looking ahead to monday, memorial day, you can see a slight uptick in temperatures. and then things kind of hold steady until wednesday. and here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. after midweek we'll see quite a warm up developing. look at thursday upper 80s inland mid 70s around the bay shoreline on friday close to 90 in the warmest inland spots. upper 70s to near 80 around the bay and then temperatures moderate into a closer to average range on saturday.
