the 46th annual carnival grand parade celebrating cultures with deep roots in san francisco's mission district. abc seven news starts right now. >> always live abc seven news starts right now, celebrating the vibrancy of the bay area. >> highlights of an event that uplifts san francisco's mission district, both culturally and financially. good evening and thanks so much for joining us. i'm dionne lim. we begin tonight with the colorful melding of music, dance and artistry that pays homage to cultural traditions in san francisco. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at the pomp and significance of this year's carnival parade. >> it's bold, bright and wonderfully loud. lydia and her family never missed the carnival. grand parade. this is a family tradition. >> we've been coming out here since i was a little girl.

>> and now i'm taking my daughter, my nephew, and our whole family's here. i like them. the nicaragua's on floats in el salvador's. >> this parade, stretching 20 blocks, celebrates the diverse latin american, caribbean and african roots of san francisco's mission district. carlos and his friends are definitely here for it. why do you love it so much? >> it brings cultures together. uh- i grew up in the mission. i was raised in the mission. >> honestly, it's just super fun just to see all of the different cultures just come together and it's honestly amazing. and we love to dance as you can see. so we're just having a blast. >> executive director rodrigo duran says carnival is sending a message to the city and the world. >> our theme this year is honor indigenous roots, and so we're taking an introspective look of who we are, what our roots are. but in a fun, colorful and majestic way. >> after the parade, mission restaurants and local food vendors ready and willing to feed hungry parade goers yesterday was really slow.

>> you know, okay, the weather didn't help today. it's a good day. >> more people. sumi kale says her 24th street restaurant started early cooking up extra food last year. >> we get a busy and the after the parade. it's uh- we get full house. >> we're an economic driver. >> carnival, san francisco for 46 years we've been supporting over 300 businesses outside. >> later, there was dancing at the carnival festival with good memories of a parade like no other in san francisco. colonel bernard abc seven news. moving on now to tragedy on the peninsula, a motorcyclist killed yesterday along highway one north of half moon bay was the son of the city's mayor. >> the collision happened near miranda road in the unincorporated community of miramar. 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado died at the scene. the collision involved his motorcycle and this pickup truck. the driver of that

truck stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. no word yet on what caused the crash. now, late last night, alvarado's family, including half moon bay mayor joaquin jimenez arena, gathered at the crash site. that's him there holding a candle. in this video, jimenez became half moon bay's first mexican immigrant mayor when he took office this year and has been a community advocate and organizer for more than 20 years to the south bay now, where a renowned san jose state professor says she's been suspended by the university for her role as a liaison between the administration and pro-palestinian demonstrators, saying hey, kill posted the suspension letter on her instagram page. the chronicle first broke this news. it doesn't name specifics, but the letter says she violated university policies because of, quote, unprofessional and exploitative conduct towards students. the professor of justice studies wrote, the struggle for academic freedom continues. sous encampment has

since been taken down. a moment today to remember those who died three years ago in a shooting spree at a vta rail yard in san jose. nine people were killed by a lone gunman on may 26th, 2021, in what is considered the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. the gunman, vta employee sam cassidy, killed himself as deputies arrived on the scene today. the vta observed a moment of silence at 6:38 a.m. to honor the lives lost. some trains and busses paused briefly at that time. we are following the story as deadly storms ravage several states in the central u.s. those storms now blamed for at least 15 deaths. you're seeing here storm damage in texas. abc news reporter morgan norwood reports how nearly 109 million people are under threat of large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes. the national weather

service is now conducting surveys after reports of at least 25 possible tornadoes stretching across five states. >> major damage reported in valley view, texas, north of dallas. dozens of people injured when this travel center and gas station was destroyed. >> approximately 60 to 80 people that were here at the time, some of them seeking shelter, pulled off the road. so, a lot of them sought shelter in the restrooms, and, but no serious injuries here. >> the storm overturning 18 wheelers on the highway, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands of homes in clay county. cows running for safety in this pasture as a funnel cloud forms above. and this marina in pilot point, destroyed by the violent weather, the widespread damage clearly visible from above. residents now just beginning to assess the damage. >> i mean, anybody that lives within 200 miles should should come together. it's texas. we will. >> in tulsa, oklahoma, downed trees litter the road, along with power lines brought down by

another possible tornado. and in northwest arkansas, the severe weather knocking down these massive trees on rob tinsley's property, we could hear the wind blowing outside and we could hear the rain getting, pretty loud. >> but we had no idea the that we had the damage on our property that we had. >> the threat of severe weather is shifting east from arkansas to ohio. there's a threat of damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes, as well as the potential for dangerous flash flooding. morgan norwood abc news, new york now, despite that severe weather, we're seeing a record number of people traveling over memorial day weekend taking a live look now at sfo. >> you can't tell from the outside, but there were more than 11,000 flights delayed this morning. that was the highest number of delays in the bay area. we're also tracking a handful of delays in oakland and san jose. the tsa says it screened more than 2.9 million passengers at airports across the country on friday, marking the most people ever screened

well this memorial day weekend. tributes to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend liberty and freedom in every year, veterans gather at the uss san francisco memorial at lands end in san francisco to honor fallen brothers and sisters. very few who served during world war two are still alive. this year's ceremony was a gathering of their descendants, family members who came together to recognize the tremendous sacrifice of those who served for america's armed services. many bay area cities are holding memorial day events tomorrow in san francisco. the u.s. department of veterans affairs will hold their annual commemoration at san francisco national cemetery in the presidio. it all starts at 1030 oak hill funeral home and memorial park in san jose will hold a remembrance at 11 at the veterans section of the cemetery

at 300 curtner avenue, and a memorial day ceremony will be held at the mare island naval cemetery in vallejo. that's starting at 9 a.m. in mill valley's annual memorial day parade begins with a veterans ceremony downtown. that's at 945 tomorrow morning, followed by a parade at 1030. a new labor movement in california involves health care workers. it's the first time doctors at one major medical provider have voted to unionize, and people are toasting an addition at golden gate park. the new ■twist to a popular beer and wine garden. >> i'm spencer christian, looking at a very impressive warm up since yesterday this time. but will that pattern hold for memorial day? i'll have the accuweather forecast coming up when abc

it's the first group of doctors in kaiser's health system to do so. residents and fellows voted 311 to 4 on thursday to be represented by the committee of interns and residents known as seer. the group is part of the service employees international union, and the results must now be certified by the national labor relations board. if certified, seer would represent more than 400 employees at locations including san jose, san francisco and oakland. golden gate park seasonal bar is expanding its beer and wine garden into a cocktail foodie destination. in its new name is the whale's tail, located on jfk promenade. kids, dogs and bikes are all welcome there. you can

evening, but it will burn off quickly tomorrow morning. so let's move along and take a look at what's happening right now. we've got the usual onshore flow. onshore flow is pretty brisk. we've got 20 mile per hour surface winds here in san francisco. excuse me. gusts to 20 and concord. so all around the bay area. it's pretty breezy right now, which is what we expect this time of the afternoon and evening this time of the year. and look at the 24 hour temperature change. it is impressive. 13 degrees warmer right now in novato than at this time yesterday. 12 degrees warmer in concord and six degrees warmer in both san francisco and oakland. now back to those sea lions enjoying the afternoon sunshine at 61 degrees here in the city. oakland 65. we've got 69 in hayward, mid 70s at san jose and redwood city, and only 55 at half moon bay. beautiful view from mount tam looking down onto the bay and onto parts of san francisco with no marine layer in the in the way to block our view. 79 degrees right now at santa rosa, petaluma only 66. we've got 73 at napa, 83 at fairfield, concord, 80 degrees and 79 at livermore. and as we look out over san francisco from sutro

tower, check out the forecast headlines tomorrow. memorial day will bring us a mild inland weather, but cool at the coast through midweek. there will be little change from tomorrow's weather, but on thursday and friday, big changes turning sharply warmer and we'll get to the details of that in just a moment. so during the evening and overnight hours we'll see this onshore flow continuing and after midnight up until about 6 a.m. or so, we'll see some low clouds developing along the peninsula coastline. and some of that cloudiness will move across the bay into the east bay. but it looks like the north bay is going to remain mainly clear overnight. overnight low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 40s in the north bay, upper 40s to about 50, just about everywhere else. and highs tomorrow mid 50s at the coast only 61 in san francisco, 67 oakland. but the inland areas will be mild with highs there in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. now let's skip ahead to wednesday. not much change there, just a few more locations we'll have highs in the 80s. but look at what happens on thursday. upper 80s inland and above 90 degrees in

well, finally. now visitors to the oakland zoo are getting a triple dose of cute. check it out. the zoo welcomed three new baby bison over the past week. how sweet they are. they are apparently referred to as red dogs because of their light reddish fur. it will all darken with age. oakland, though, won't be their permanent home on the
