celebrating cultures with roots deep in san francisco's mission district. the news at six starts right now, always live abc seven news starts right now, celebrating the vibrancy of the bay area. highlights of an event that uplifts san francisco's mission district, both culturally and financially. good evening, and thanks for joining us. i'm diane lim. we begin tonight with a colorful melding of music, dance and artistry that pays homage to cultural traditions in san francisco. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard has a look at the pomp and significance of this year's carnival parade. >> it's bold, bright and wonderfully loud. lydia and her family never missed the carnival. grand parade. this is a family tradition. >> we've been coming out here since i was a little girl.

>> and now i'm taking my daughter, my nephew, and our whole family's here. i like them. the nicaragua's on floats in el salvador's. >> this parade, stretching 20 blocks, celebrates the diverse latin american, caribbean and african roots of san francisco's mission district. carlos and his friends are definitely here for it. why do you love it so much? >> it brings cultures together. i grew up in the mission. i was raised in the mission. honestly it's just super fun just to see all of the different cultures just come together. >> and it's honestly amazing. and we love to dance, as you can see. so we're just having a blast. >> executive director rodrigo duran says carnival is sending a message to the city and the world. >> our theme this year is honor indigenous roots, and so we're taking an introspective look of who we are, what our roots are, but in a fun, colorful and majestic way. >> after the parade, mission restaurants and local food vendors ready and willing to feed hungry parade goers. >> yesterday was really slow.

you know, okay, the weather didn't help today. it's a good day. more people. >> sumi kale says her 24th street restaurant started early, cooking up extra food last year. >> wiget uh- busy and the day after the parade, it's. we get full house. >> we're an economic driver. carnival. san francisco. for 46 years, we've been supporting over 300 businesses outside. >> later, there was dancing at the carnival festival, all with good memories of a parade like no other in san francisco. cornell bernard abc seven news. >> moving on now to tragedy on the peninsula, a motorcyclist killed yesterday along highway one north of half moon bay was the son of the city's mayor. the collision happened near miranda road in the unincorporated community of miramar. 28 year old joaquin dominic jimenez alvarado died at the scene. the collision involved his motorcycle and this pickup truck. the driver of the truck

stayed at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. no word yet on what caused that crash. now, late last night, alvarado's family, including half moon bay mayor joaquin jimenez arena, gathered at the crash site. you see him there holding the candle. jimenez became half moon bay's first mexican immigrant mayor when he took office this year, and has been a community advocate and organizer for more than 20 years. to the south bay now, where a renowned san jose state professor says she's been suspended by the university for her role as a liaison between the administration and pro-palestinian demonstrators, saying, hey, kill posted the suspension letter on her instagram page. the chronicle first broke that news. it doesn't name specifics, but the letter says she violated school policies because of, quote, unprofessional and exploitative conduct towards students. the professor of justice studies wrote, the struggle for academic freedom continues. sous encampment has since been taken

down. a moment today to remember those who died three years ago in a shooting spree at a vta rail yard in san jose. nine people were killed by a lone gunman on may 26th, 2021, in what is considered the deadliest mass shooting in bay area history. the gunman, vta employee sam cassidy, killed himself as deputies arrived on the scene today. the vta observed a moment of silence at 6:38 a.m. to honor the lives lost. some trains and busses also paused briefly at that time . we are following the story as deadly storms ravaged several states in the central u.s. those storms are blamed now for at least 15 deaths. and you're seeing here storm damage in texas. as abc news reporter morgan norwood reports, how nearly 109 million people are under threat of large hail, damaging winds and possible tornadoes. the national weather service is now conducting

surveys after reports of at least 25 possible tornadoes stretching across five states. >> major damage reported in valley view, texas, north of dallas. dozens of people injured when this travel center and gas station was destroyed. >> approximately 60 to 80 people that were here at the time, some of them seeking shelter, pulled off the road, so, so, a lot of them sought shelter in the restrooms, and, but no serious injuries here. >> the storm overturning 18 wheelers on the highway, downing trees and knocking out power to thousands of homes and clay county cows running for safety in this pasture as a funnel cloud forms above. and this marina in pilot point destroyed by the violent weather, the widespread damage clearly visible from above. residents now just beginning to assess the damage. >> i mean, anybody that lives within 200 miles should should come together. it's texas. >> we will in tulsa, oklahoma, downed trees litter the road, along with power lines brought down by another possible

tornado. and in northwest arkansas, the severe weather knocking down these massive trees on rob tinsley's property, we could hear the wind blowing outside and we could hear the rain getting, pretty loud. >> but we had no idea that we had the damage on our property that we had. >> the threat of severe weather is shifting east from arkansas to ohio. there's a threat of damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes, as well as the potential for dangerous flash flooding. morgan norwood abc news, new york now, despite that severe weather, we are seeing a record number of people traveling over memorial day weekend. >> here is a live look at sfo where more than 110 flights were delayed. today. that was the highest number of delays in the bay area. we're also tracking a handful of delays in oakland and san jose. the tsa says it screened more than 2.9 million passengers at airports across the country friday, marking the most people ever screened in on this memorial day weekend. tributes to remember those who

paid the ultimate sacrifice to defend liberty and freedom every year, veterans gather at the uss san francisco memorial. it lands end to honor fallen brothers and sisters, very few who served during world war two are still alive. this year's ceremony was a gathering of their descendants, family members who came together to recognize the tremendous sacrifice of those who served for america's armed services. now, many bay area cities are holding memorial day events tomorrow in san francisco. the u.s. department of veterans affairs will hold their annual commemoration at san francisco national cemetery in the presidio. that event starts at 1030. oak hill funeral home and memorial park in san jose will hold a remembrance at 11 at the veterans section of the cemetery at 300 curtner avenue. a

memorial day ceremony will be held at mare island naval cemetery in vallejo starting at 9 a.m, and mill valley's annual memorial day parade begins with a veterans ceremony downtown at 945 tomorrow morning, followed by a parade at 1030. well, looking ahead, a new labor movement in california involves health care workers, and it's the first time doctors at one major medical provider have voted to unionize. plus, people are toasting an addition at golden gate park. the new twist to a popular beer and wine garden. >> i'm spencer christian. we're experiencing quite an impressive warm up from yesterday to today. and now going into memorial day, what can we expect? i'll have the accuweather forecast coming up when

relations board. if certified. cair would represent more than 400 employees at locations including san jose, san francisco and oakland. golden gate parks seasonal bar is expanding its beer and wine garden into a cocktail foodie destination. its new name is the whale's tail, located on the jfk promenade. kids, dogs and bikes are all welcome there. you can enjoy some live music, food trucks, street art and games. it is open every weekend this summer and select holidays, including tomorrow from noon until 6 p.m. happening tomorrow. the very last of the big ski resorts in tahoe is closing for the season. palisades tahoe, as you can see here, the slopes they are closing out for skiing and riding after memorial day. the resort called this past season a memorable one, with ample snow to treat visitors. the other big resorts, heavenly, kirkwood, northwood and sugar bowl, all closed last month.

>> nice to see our sports producer casey pratt there on stage as well. you can support their efforts by rounding up to the nearest dollar. when you buy food at mcdonald's. well, happening now, the last day of bottlerock in napa valley and ed sheeran is headlining. last night was all the hype because actor bradley cooper joined pearl jam on stage. maybe it's time to leave the old ways, but but wait, there is more. cooper then started cooking up cheesesteaks for people. the excitement brought the largest crowd to the culinary stage in the history of the festival. steph curry was apparently in the mix as well, pouring drinks for fans. he was promoting his new gentleman cut bourbon in the vip sections. those stars will be back today with award winning chef jose andres to play and cook on stage. bottlerock tickets sold out weeks ago, with 120,000 people expected to attend. well, climate change is already impacting california's

crops the next quarter century, and that could impact the world famous wine industry here in the bay area. >> earlier frost more frost risk in the spring. all of these things are compounding and create a lot of issues with being able to figure out what might be able to grow. >> we know what will happen to napa's famous cabernet grapes and what's being done to keep the local grape harvest from wilting away. be sure to watch the abc7 originals presentation, bay area 2050 to learn more. of course, i thought of you, spencer, when it came to all things wine and climate change. exactly. >> i'm passionate about both of those things and they are, of course, closely related. yeah, yeah. climate change affects everything right now. here's a look at what's happening with our weather at this moment. dion, we've got a brisk onshore flow. in fact the pretty windy in some spots with surface speeds up to 24mph at sfo, 21mph at concord. so let's move along and take a look at how it affects our temperature change. well, it seems to have increased

the temperatures. it is so much warmer right now all across the bay area than at this time yesterday. anywhere from eight to about 14 degrees warmer in most locations. and the sea lions at pier 39 are soaking up the late afternoon early evening sun, 59 degrees here in san francisco right now. oakland 63, hayward 68. mid 70s at san jose and redwood city 55 at half moon bay. nice view from mount tam looking down onto the bay and to parts of san francisco. 77 right now at santa rosa. petaluma 6471 napa. upper 70s at fairfield, concord and livermore. let's check out our forecast headlines monday, tomorrow, memorial day. it will be mild inland cool at the coast. very little change going into midweek, tuesday, tuesday and wednesday. but later in the week, thursday and friday, we are going to have a sharp warm up. it's going to feel almost like summer in many locations, so during the evening hours, in the late night hours, we'll see this onshore flow continuing. we'll see some low clouds and fog developing along the peninsula coastline before midnight. between midnight and about 6 a.m, you'll see the fog expanding across the bay locally and over to parts of the east

bay. it will remain mainly clear, though up in the north bay, overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 40s. right around the bay shoreline. we'll see lows down to only about 50 degrees. highs tomorrow. mid 50s at the coast, upper 60s to low 70s around the bay shoreline. upper 70s to low 80s inland. now let's skip ahead. look at the maximum temperature range. starting on wednesday we'll see that big warm up i was talking about beginning with inland highs going into the mid 80s. by thursday we'll see upper 80s to around 90 and the warmest inland spots near 80 around the bay shoreline and even higher on friday will probably see 1 or 2 locations breaking 90 degrees inland on friday. so here's the accuweather 70 forecast memorial day tomorrow. nice and mild. then on tuesday, a one day drop in temperatures before they bounce right back on wednesday. and then we get that warm up thursday and friday, upper 80s to low 90s inland. and then next weekend we'll see temperatures moderating into a more typical range for this time of the year. >> what a road trip it's been for the giants. four straight

the save. and he's in trouble right away. very first pitch. little ground ball gets right over him and it's an infield single. and then next pitch j.d. martinez solid single to right. so two pitches in and the mets have the winning run at the plate. gets worse for the giants. jeff mcneil hit by the pitch there. that loads the bases with just one out. and then very next batter it's bader. he saw him use the glove and now doing it with the bat liner in the left field. one run is going to score. here comes the game tying run scores easily. and now all of a sudden we're tied at three. and the mets still have a chance to win an intentional walk. loads the bases for omar nevarez and there's your ball game liner to center field. time to bounce in queens. giants lose 43a good road trip, but it could have been great a good chance to win the game. >> obviously you know first game of the series was tough. last game of the series was tough in between was good, but it just felt like a game that that we were going to win. >> you know, you win more games
