monday, june 27th, it is memorial day, so we are honoring those who lost their lives for our country. thanks for being here. >> hey. good morning to be a nice day. the warmest of the three days. get ready. it's a nice afternoon. on the way. we'll take a live look outside from the exploratorium camera, showing you that it is a little cloudy over the city right now. we will have a little bit of a marine layer this morning, but it will give us a lot of sunshine later on today. so looking at current temperatures, we do have some more chilly spots this morning in the 40s from sonoma to santa rosa, we have low 50 s around the bay shoreline right now. good morning oakland coming in with a current temperature of 52 degrees. let's talk about the coast first. we'll have a lot of cloud cover this morning giving way to a mix of sun and clouds this afternoon. high temperatures today. you can see we're mainly in the mid 50s, maybe the upper 50s, and some of our warmer areas along the coast now around the bay shoreline a little bit. patchy fog being reported across hayward, oakland in the city right now. we'll get that sunshine out here pretty fast this morning. the afternoon we'll have daytime highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s. the

nice day around the bay shoreline inland. today, it's bright out there. it's also going to be a warm one, the warmest of the three days. this holiday weekend. we'll have daytime highs hitting the lower 80s by about 3 p.m. >> reggie drew, thank you. developing news in the east bay. firefighters are still monitoring the scene of a massive fire in oakland. this e t at a lumber supply st off of 880. the flames and smoke prompting traffic delays and air quality concerns for people in that area. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is tracking that for us. and gloria, no one was hurt here. yes. >> very good news, reggie. and at last check, firefighters were still putting out hot spots and figuring out the cause of the fire. big plumes of smoke could be seen in east oakland last night. the fire started around 7:45 p.m. yesterday at economy lumber company on high street near interstate 80, and people driving by could see it from the freeway. more than 75 firefighters responded. the oakland fire battalion chief says they initially faced access

issues because of the train tracks there, and rail service was stopped temporarily. some roads around the area were also blocked off after the fire broke out. >> upon arrival, they found heavy fire making its way and impinging into the main building of economy lumber. immediately on scene, our first two engine company called for a second alarm, bringing more units on scene, realizing that this fire was heavily established into the building and was going to cause us some significant difficulties to be able to put it out, the battalion chief says the building was used to store materials and was also the main showroom for doors and windows. >> there were no reported injuries, but a smoke advisory was issued late last night. fire officials are reminding anyone who lives in the area to keep their doors and windows closed to prevent smoke exposure, live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. thanks, gloria. >> more than 50 people who live at a senior care facility were displaced in the east bay

overnight. a call about someone stuck in an elevator at the apartments in oakley spiraled into a much bigger problem. it happened at the oaks apartments on carol lane, just off main street, when contra costa county firefighters got there to help with that elevator. they found a sewage leak on the second floor. they say the water was spilling from a bathtub down into the electrical room. p-g-and-e's turned off the power. firefighters helped all the residents and their pets evacuate, and it was especially stressful for seniors relying on medical devices. >> if i didn't have an extra oxygen tank, i would be in bad shape because they don't have no generators here. >> firefighters say they have been to that building several times before for flooding issues . the fire department says building management is putting residents in hotels until the leak is fixed. >> it started with racist messages left at the front door. then a fire destroyed a san francisco family's home. now, neighbors near alamo square are

showing that family how much their supported in the community. abc seven news reporter ryan curry brings us to the block party, helping them recover. >> a block party is always a way to bring a neighborhood closer together, but this one holds a deeper meaning. it's about supporting a family who currently doesn't have a home. >> i feel like, someone has died . my house died. my childhood house that i've been at since i was three years old. >> a fire broke out last week, destroying the inside. latisha's mother almost didn't make it. she says a neighbor had to help. >> her name was teresa. she's helped my dad. she wouldn't let him go back in because he wanted to go get my mom. and i just want the world to know. i thank her. >> the fire came almost one month after leticia's brother, terry, started getting racist packages at his doorstep. one had a doll with a noose around its neck. terry is still processing everything. >> like i was having bad moments, man. like seeing my

nephew break down this morning and like he was like, uncle, i never seen you cry before. my daughter's like. i've never seen him cry before. >> daddy, he's lived in this area. his whole life, and he's gotten to know his neighbors through his dog walking service. the threats he received confound him if he go there walking dogs, doing what i'm doing for so long, they don't like that i've been told they don't want me walking dogs. >> on a note, they said they don't want me up here no more. get out of here. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation and police are looking into those threatening deliveries. but his neighbors on sunday wanted to make one thing clear. they've called it home for years. but now they can't go inside. but to get an idea just how much support they're getting from the community. look no further. >> now you see all the love and all the kindness and everything that you've done for people in this community is being paid back to him. >> but it goes beyond messages on his house. one neighbor started donation bins for his family. the gofundme now has received over $100,000. he says this level of support gives him and his family strength.

>> you can get down but keep your head up, keep pushing in san francisco. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. >> there are several events planned across the bay area today to mark memorial day, san francisco national cemetery and the presidio will be holding its annual commemoration that starts at 1030. this morning. oak hill funeral home and memorial park in san jose will hold a remembrance at 11 at the veterans section of the cemetery at 300 curtner avenue, mare island. naval cemetery in vallejo holds its ceremony that starts at 9 a.m, and mill valley's annual memorial day parade begins with a veterans ceremony downtown at 945. the parade starts at 1030, and a reminder bart and muni are running on a holiday schedule today. gathered at the uss san francisco memorial at land's end to honor fallen brothers and sisters, very few who served

during world war two are still alive. this year's ceremony was a gathering of their descendants, family members who came together to recognize the tremendous sacrifice of those who served for america's armed forces. >> 507 on this holiday will take you to san jose this morning. we have clear skies here. a current temperature right around 55 degrees, with plenty of stars in the south bay. we are dealing with a bit of fog through napa this morning, over oakland and across the city and along the coast, but today is going to be a mild day. lots of sunshine. today is the warmest of the three days this holiday weekend as we take a look at weather wellness out there, air quality is good. some encouraging news when it comes to our pollen levels. they are coming down from high to moderate levels. that's a big improvement for us today. olive and pine trees are your top allergens this morning. your uv index and a lot of us will be enjoying the day. it is an eight out of an 11 that is very high. so you do want to wear that sunscreen as you go about your day. here's future

weather as we go. hour by hour. here's 9 a.m. we're still dealing with a bit of fog through oakland, certainly over to the city and along the coast. but as we head deeper into the day, we will see bright sunshine. i think the coast will even see a bit more sunshine and say, this model is pointing out it will be a nice, mild afternoon. we'll go into the low 80s and our warmest spots away from the coast around the bay shoreline, 60s and 70s, with a good amount of sunshine later on today. and then tonight, we'll see that marine layer push across the east bay and will turn to foggy skies in spots as we head into tuesday. so today we'll get that sunshine breaking through here throughout the afternoon. 67 for high in oakland. we'll go to 76. in san jose, 80 the high in santa rosa, 61 in the city, fairfield coming in with a mild high of 80 degrees. if you are traveling across california today, we'll have a nice pleasant coast in the 60s and 70s, 80s and 90s in our valleys. tahoe coming in close to 70 degrees. a lot of sunshine this afternoon.

i'd have walked off the job last week, the union voted to approve the strike as he pushed for a contract with higher wages and benefits. the strike started on saturday and forced some of their managers to pilot the boats over the holiday weekend. the union president tells our media partners that the sff standard that, quote the walkout would continue as long as it needs to until management decides to negotiate in good faith. >> some encouraging news for business in downtown san francisco nintendo is making plans to open a store in union square. this would be only the

second location in the country. abc seven news reporter luz pena with what we can expect when mario and his friends come to town. >> nintendo is coming to san francisco in its new home, union square. >> yeah, this is great news with nintendo. who doesn't like a nintendo? a nintendo store in union square in san francisco is fantastic. >> details on the san francisco nintendo store are still unknown, but the video game company's first us location, located in new york city, could be giving us a glimpse into what the san francisco store could look like in new york. it's a two story building with nintendo games, merchandise, and all the consoles. union square has a space for a similar look. >> you know, it's a great psychological boost. it's a great financial boost, and it really tells us that union square is still alive. it is still vital. it's still attractive. this is the second nintendo experiential store in the united states. so it's really a breath of fresh air. >> supervisor aaron peskin represents the area where union

square is located. he says they're focusing on making the area safer to attract more businesses. >> my belief is that nintendo, of course, will have their own on site security. but san francisco has been very clear that we have devoted resources of law enforcement in that area of additional ambassadors. we have a police substation at union square. we've been paying overtime for law enforcement at union square. it is clean. it is safe. the union square alliance has been pushing for more storefronts at union square. >> the president of the san francisco chamber of commerce said 32 businesses have recently opened here, but union square has a number of different restaurants that have opened high end retail stores rolex, patek philippe, commercial real estate services firm cushman and wakefield represent the majority of the commercial spaces in the city. they are noticing a promising trend. >> i'd say we're now at the point where there's a lot more tenants coming in. there's deals that have been done some time ago, but you don't see it until

they actually open a recent one that just opened is breitling. >> so what should we expect? what else is coming to union square? >> so i think you should expect to see a lot more stores opening this year in particular. i think you're also going to see some other tenants relocating, expanding and driving by union square. >> you can still see some for at least signs. i asked cushman and wakefield about this. they said there are many stores already under contract despite having the for lease signs out there projecting at least six more businesses to open this year in union square. lou pena, abc seven news. >> golden gate park seasonal bar is expanding its beer and wine garden into a cocktail foodie destination. its new name is the whale's tail, located on the jfk promenade. kids, dogs and bikes are all welcome, and there you can enjoy some live music, food trucks, street art and games that's going to be open every weekend this summer and select holidays, including today from

pollen has been at high levels. now, with the latest information this morning, we're bringing that down to medium level. so there's a little less pollen in the atmosphere. grass, trees and mold are all low. let's talk winds. future tracker windspeed showing you later on this afternoon we'll have our traditional onshore wind picking up. you'll find those speeds anywhere from about 15 to 25mph. but we'll have this wind under mainly sunny skies, so highs today. we will find temperatures in the 60s and 70s in the south bay, 76 in san jose, 68 in santa cruz, cupertino up to a lovely 74 degrees. now along the coast we have clouds right now. we'll get a little bit of sunshine before the wind picks up mid and upper 50s for half moon bay in pacifica, brighter as you hop over to redwood city at 7269, in mountain view. right now across the city, we are seeing cloudy skies. we'll have that fog break close to noon today, so we'll have that three four hour window where we get some sunshine this afternoon. upper 50s to the mid 60s with those winds picking up later today in the north bay. it

in oakland after ripped through a lumber supply company just off 8-80. crews say they've used so much water they've had to ask east bay mud for help to keep the hydrants flowing so now they're watching for hot spots. >> number two this week, the la innocence project will argue in court for a chance to retest some dna evidence in scott peterson's case. peterson was convicted of killing his wife, laci, and unborn child 20 years ago. his new attorneys want items from a burned out van to be tested, including a bloody mattress. prosecutors argue the dna has been tested enough. >> number three powerful storms across the south and midwest are being blamed for the deaths of at least 18 people. hundreds of others across texas, oklahoma and arkansas have been injured due to high winds and

destructive tornadoes. >> and number four for the holiday today it will be sunny. we will have mild temperatures, a little bit of fog out there this morning breaking over the next couple of hours, 60s and 70s around the bay shoreline. our warmest cities today in the low 80s. >> number five, you thought there's going to be no one on the roads right now? you are right. look at traffic this morning along the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see that it is smooth sailing. so if you are trying to get back to somewhere this morning, now's a great time. >> number six, we're on the tail end of the holiday travel rush with a predicted 38 million people taking road trips, triple a warns today between 3 and 7 p.m. will be especially busy on the roads. that's when a lot of people are driving back from their long weekend. >> number seven oakland's main library is closed, at least for now. the branch on 14th street won't be open until november. crews are making critical repairs, including putting on a new roof and upgrading the electrical system. a weekend filled with culture, art, music and a whole lot of dancing in the street. the carnival parade

>> good morning everybody. it is monday, may 27th. it looks like it's. >> i'm sorry. go >> i'm just saying it's memorial day. >> it is. >> and a lot of you are wondering what the weather is going to be like today. it's going to be a warm one. >> it will be. and today is going to be the warmest of the three days this holiday weekend. it is going to be a nice sunny afternoon with mild temperatures. this morning though, we'll start out with our tam camera showing you our marine layer is back here along the coast into parts of the east bay around oakland and hayward. even pushing a little bit north into napa this morning. other areas are reporting clear skies. so underneath some of that fog we are in the 40s, low and mid 50s right now from the city to hayward, san jose, right now coming in at 55 degrees. so taking a look at the forecast, we'll begin along the coast this morning. we do have a fair amount of cloud cover, some pockets of drizzle. not out of the question. we'll see a blend of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon. temperatures in the mid 50s. it also turns breezy around here. we'll have frequent wind gusts over 20mph throughout the afternoon around the bay shoreline. we do have some

patchy fog out there this morning, but you can see that fog will clear after 10 a.m. we will have bright sunshine this afternoon and very pleasant when it comes to our temperatures, upper 60s to the lower 70s. but again, that breeze picks up this afternoon and inland it is going to be mild. if not warm. clear skies early on, full sunshine that will get daytime highs above average. we'll hit the low 80s by about 3 p.m. reggie aqui kumasi. >> thanks, drew. it has been a deadly memorial day weekend after two dozen tornadoes tore through parts of the plains and the south. and this morning, the severe weather being blamed for at least 18 deaths. here's abc news reporter perry russom. reporter the car is shaking. >> deadly tornadoes killing at least 18 people in the south and southeast in texas, governor greg abbott says at least seven people have been killed, including a two year old and five year old from the same family. this dog found alive in the rubble valley view, texas, north of dallas, one of the

hardest hit cities. this gas station destroyed with 60 to 80 people hiding inside. the sheriff says no one was seriously hurt. the destruction is widespread. the governor signing a disaster declaration for more than a third of the state. >> candidly, it's been a harrowing week, with lives lost, property reduced to rubble hopes and dreams of texas families and small businesses have literally been crushed by storm after storm. >> storm stretching from texas to illinois. in oklahoma, hail the size of baseballs. in arkansas, at least eight people killed, buildings collapsing and roofs ripped off homes. >> we felt it hit the house and just felt it started sucking air up through the through the walls and the windows. >> tried to make it to the hallway. that's the most central part of our house. and that's when we realized we didn't have a roof. >> tens of thousands of people without power. >> we are seeing the great

find was inside a live hand grenade and a tear gas canister. firefighters gently set the box down, called in backup. the travis air force base bomb squad showed up to take that hand grenade back to the base so it could be detonated. the sheriff's office took custody of the tear gas can. thankfully, no one was hurt this morning. >> the community of half moon bay is in mourning. we've learned the victim in a deadly motorcycle crash is the mayor's son. san mateo county deputies say it happened saturday night along highway one near miranda road and the unincorporated community of miramar. it's a painful loss for this close knit community. abc seven news reporter j.r. stone talked to neighbors who share concerns about that stretch of highway. >> half moon bay mayor joaquin jimenez's family seen here in this video saturday night, are in mourning right now after the mayor's son died in this motorcycle accident. >> you know, saw the there was the truck there and the motorcycle that was more or less lodged under the truck was
