in place. >> cover your head! >> this morning, a closer look at the terrifying moments an ef-2 tornado touched down in valley view, texas, about an hour north of dallas. winds gusting up 135 miles per hour as 200 homes and businesses destroyed, including this roadside gas station which our somara theodore visited shortly after the tornado struck. >> it was here at this gas station where 60 to 80 people ran for their lives seeking shelter, with one survivor describing this as like a scene out of a movie. >> officials confirming this weather system is to blame for at least 18 deaths in four different states. oklahoma, kentucky, arkansas, and texas, where a 2-year-old and 5-year-old were killed. >> in the moments you are on the floorboard, what's running through your head? >> it was scary. the most horrific thing i have ever gone through.

that to the women who have had the freedom to make their own health care decisions ripped away." like other third-party candidates, libertarians have been spoilers before and could be again, especially when so many voters say they are not excited about either trump or president biden. now, robert f. kennedy jr. also made a play for the libertarian party nomination, but fell short. he was actually eliminated in the first round of voting. instead, the libertarian party nominated chase oliver, a 39-year-old from atlanta, georgia. he told me he would cut off military aid to israel and be a messenger for those seeking a cease-fire. whit? >> yet another factor in his campaign. maryalice, while we have you, back to former president trump in the case. special counsel jack smith now asking for a gag order. >> yeah, that's right, whit. he said trump's recent comments online have posed a risk to law enforcement. trump has been making this false and really incendiary claim that biden's doj authorized the use of deadly force in that raid at mar-a-lago.

in fact, newly unsealed court filings show boilerplate language that fbi agents had to follow standard operating procedure, whit. >> maryalice parks, thank you. michael? >> thank you, whit. overseas now to a deadly israeli air strike in the gaza city of rafah that killed dozens of civilians. britt clennett has the latest from israel. good morning, britt. >> good morning, michael. dozens of people killed or injured in an explosion in rafah which the idf says is the last hamas stronghold. overnight, deadly strikes at a refugee camp in western rafah. at least 50 killed, according to action aid u.k. they say israeli fighter jets launched eight missiles at makeshift shelters, quickly becoming a flaming inferno, strikes hitting the area which the idf had previously designated as a humanitarian zone, horrifying images as the displaced living in this camp attempt to put out the flames, trying to save anyone they can.

the idf claims they killed two senior hamas officials in the strikes, also saying they are aware of several civilians in the area that were harmed. this comes hours after hamas fired rockets toward tel aviv for the first time in at least four months. this home on the outskirts of tel aviv with minimal damage. the idf saying the rockets are launched from rafah in an area with a civilian and back to the strikes in rafah, and idf official has just told me the area hit was not a humanitarian zone, despite the claims by hamas. rebecca? >> okay, britt, thank you. we turn now to the urgent search for survivors after a catastrophic landslide in papua new guinea with thousands feared dead. our foreign correspondent, james longman, is tracking the very latest for us. good morning, james. >> good morning, rebecca. more than 2,000 people may have been buried alive in a massive landslide in papua new guinea on friday. that's a new number from the

office of national disaster. really difficult to get a good idea on numbers, because it is such a remote location, but the search and rescue operation has begun. that is dangerous, because the earth is still moving. water is still rushing underground. this is an incredibly dangerous situation for them. heavy machinery moved in late sunday night, but until then, people were digging with their bare hands trying to find survivors through something like 6-8 meters of mud. more than 150 homes have been swept away, and farmland, as well. now, two survivors were found today. a couple deep beneath that mud, their cries for help were heard and they were saved. but there are other survivors perhaps underneath the mud. the race is on to get to them, but this is a catastrophic situation for the people of papua new guinea. michael? >> it sure is, james. thank you for that. now to the tragic death of 30-year-old pro golfer grayson murray. an outpouring of support this morning. will reeve has the latest for us and what his family saying.

good morning, will. >> good morning, michael. this has sent shock waves through the golf world. murray was playing in a tournament on friday and withdrew near the end of his round. he was found dead the next day. fellow pga tour players grieving and sharing the memories of their colleague and friend as his family mourns their son. this morning the golf world mourning the tragic loss of professional golfer grayson murray. >> we were so competitive, so competitive out here. we all want to beat each other. and then something like this happens, and you realize that we are all just humans. >> broadcasters announcing the 30-year-old's death during the third round of the charles schwab challenge on saturday. >> such a sad, sad day for the pga tour. >> murray's parents confirming sunday that their son died by suicide, saying in part, "it's a nightmare. we have so many questions that have no answers. but one, was grayson loved? the answer is yes." on friday, murray withdrew from

the second round of the charles schwab challenge, citing an illness. the 8-year pga tour veteran had been open and vulnerable about his struggles with mental health issues and alcoholism, like in this social media post last year. >> it's not easy. me and the people around me that love me, they don't like to see me down. they have been my number one supporters. >> players left speechless upon learning the news. >> obviously it was a huge shock. my heart sank. i hate it. i miss him. >> pga tour commissioner jay monahan saying he spoke to murray's parents, and, "they asked that we continue with tournament play. they were adamant that grayson would want us to do so." >> the honesty, the openness, the willingness to tell his story so others might hear it. i mean, to me, that's his legacy. >> players wore pins on their hats yesterday to honor murray, and in their statement, his parents added, "please honor grayson by being kind to one another. if that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else." and if you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of

>> when we were together, sasha, i wasn't thinking about anything other than just you and me. >> wactor, best known for his role as brando corbin on "general hospital," was shot and killed in downtown los angeles saturday night. the 37-year-old was walking to his car with a female colleague after finishing his shift at level 8, a popular rooftop bar. according to police, when he arrived at the parking lot, he found three people huddled around his vehicle. authorities say he initially thought the car was getting towed, but the group was in fact trying to steal the catalytic converter. that is a car part that has become a common target for thieves across the country because of its valuable metal components. witnesses say, before wactor could even confront the thieves, one opened fire, all three then speeding off in another car, wactor dying a short time later. >> that's your decision. i respect that. >> in addition to daytime tv, he was also a familiar face on prime-time tv, having appeared on "criminal minds" and "ncis." >> i told you, i have no idea.

good morning, erielle. >> hey, good morning to you, michael. you know, 80% of life guard rescues are due to rip currents. experts say they can happen at any beach where there are breaking waves like where we are. and lifeguards tell us it is vital to heed the warnings, like flags like this one that say no swimming, and also knowing what to do and what not to do can save lives. this morning, as millions head to the beach this holiday, a summer warning about how to stay safe from a life-threatening danger in the water. >> we have this really, really rough water, very strong rip currents. >> officials say roughly a dozen people rescued from a series of strong rip currents in galveston, texas, this weekend. a 26-year-old tourist from louisiana, and a 19-year-old from houston did not survive. and, just last week, three good samaritans rescuing this teen, exhausted in a florida rip current. >> the kid was going under water numerous times. i yelled for him to swim to me. >> seth stern and two others

managing to pull the team to safety. stern admitting he struggled. >> i'm a pretty decent swimmer and that current was really ripping me. >> safety experts warn would-be rescuers often become victims themselves, simply because it is much more tiring than it seems. >> water rescue takes a lot of training and a lot of physical endurance. you are trying to hold someone up, and now you don't have the use of your arms. >> if you do attempt a rescue, experts say bring something that floats, like a boogie board. >> if you make contact with a drowning victim, keep it between you and the drowning victim so that they have that to climb on and not you. >> the best way not to become the victim of a rip current is knowing how to swim out of one. in 2022, our matt gutman partnered with the huntington beach fire department to learn just that. one of the most common mistakes is trying to swim back to shore by swimming against the current. >> the thing with a rip current is it is moving about as fast as an olympic swimmer.

so, unless you're michael phelps, you're probably not going to beat it. >> instead, experts say the first thing to do is flip and float. this will help you stay calm. the next move, swimming parallel to shore, following the direction of the coastline until you feel that rip current stop pulling, then swimming at an angle back to shore. and experts say that rip currents can be hard to spot, but if you take a walk up a little bit higher, on higher ground, when you get to the beach, before you get in the water, you turn around and look at the water and see any places where the waves aren't breaking, or if you see any sediment floating back out to sea, any foam floating back out to sea. that could be a sign of trouble. you always want to be prepared. have your cell phone fully charged when you go to the beach, and, again, take a flotation device like perhaps a boogie board or even an empty cooler. that can make all the difference in an emergency. guys? >> great advice, erielle. thank you so much for that. coming up next, we have our play of the day. you don't want to miss it! ♪ ♪ day.

of his new book with maria elena salinas, "one year in uvalde: a story of hope and resilience." and the new documentary, "print it black." good morning to you. you mentioned how much time you spent there in uvalde with the families. you had a chance to really get to know them. can you tell us how they are doing now? >> it is still a struggle. it's hard to believe it's been two years now. but they spent a bit of resolution last week. 19 of the families reached a settlement with the city of uvalde for $2 million. but they still don't feel they have all the answers they need, they want accountability, so they are suing the state and the federal government because there were 150 federal agents who responded to robb elementary. they are suing the manufacturer that made the ar-15-style rifle. they are suing social media, instagram, and the company that makes "call of duty," the video game, that these families argue trains and desensitizes young adolescents who commit

these crimes. >> i'm sure the families' pain will never go away. two years, but it'll never go away. now you have the new abc news live documentary, "print it black." it tells it from a different perspective, from the local news perspective. >> it's a story about this little town newspaper, small, only eight reporters, and how it grapples with not only covering the tragedy in their backyard, but also mourning, because it seems like everyone at the paper knew somebody who passed away in that tragedy. we call it "print it black" because the day after the shooting the staff decided to put a blank slate, a black slate on the front page. no pictures, just a black slate with the words "may 24th, 2022." >> let's take a look at a clip. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> i have covered child homicides before. i have requested autopsies.

"one year in uvalde: a story of hope and resilience." those families, they really show a lot of resilience in their fight for justice. >> we did a whole year there, we spent it with producers and reporters and camera crews, and we wound up producing almost 300 stories during that year, mike. and then we also did five documentaries, including this one, which tells the story about the small town newspaper. it was just amazing, the way that community came together, and the way that newspaper wound up having to cover it. in many ways, it is inspiring, because the families are now politically active. they took heart ache and turned it into activism. and some are running for political office, staging protests, staging marches. kimberly rubio ran for mayor. the uncle of one of the other

"american grill: 125 recipes for mastering outdoor cooking." we are going to be making chicken paillard. >> this smells amazing. chicken paillard, for people who are not familiar, it sounds fancy but it's actually pretty simple. >> "paillard" just means slice thin and grill it. and traditionally, when you say chicken paillard, it is usually chicken pounded really thin like this or sliced thin, which is a fantastic technique inside the book. a little bit of olive oil, put on the grill, cook for maybe 3-4 minutes on each side because it is so thin. it cooks really quickly, stays nice and juicy, and you get that delicious charred flavor. >> and you are serving it with a

beautiful salad with some fennel in it. >> i will hand you those tongs so you can flip our chicken while we do this. you can build this chicken paillard with just about anything. on my particular recipe inside "american grill," we start out with fresh arugula and then we will add fennel to this, it is a nice crunch. it might be an unexpected ingredient, but i love the fresh flavor, a slight anise note to that, almost like a licorice note. it's really delicious. >> i love the grapefruit you're putting in for a little citrus. >> a vitamin c pop, the acidity from the grapefruit is really great. now we are going to start adding some other delicious salty flavors to this. we've got green olives, which are delicious. we have got some tomatoes, those are starting to pop right now. >> perfect timing for summer. >> exactly. got a little caper for a salty pop, too, and some feta cheese. >> and this is interesting, too. you top it off with some chive oil? >> yep, chive oil. it's just -- are you ready for this? chopped chives in olive oil. boom, couldn't be more simple than that.
