flation frustration of americans fed up with being asked to pay a tip. almost everywhere may finally have a solution. >> from abc news this is america. this morning. >> good tuesday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the severe weather and travel trouble. >> nearly two dozen people have been killed in severe weather outbreaks in recent days, but the weather hasn't been the only complication for travelers. the severe weather threat reaching the east coast overnight. strong storms hitting washington, dc. at least one tornado warning in maryland. the storm spawned at least 25 tornadoes in five states over the holiday weekend. this is the moment a twister packing winds up to 135mph leveled a convenience store north of dallas, texas.

my row, i said, did he just say water landing pilot telling them to put on life vests due to a possible mechanical issue? they got on the, thing and was like, turn your phones off. like, you mean to tell me, is this my last time to, like, not be able to make a phone call? like, i won't be able to let nobody know that we're about to do an emergency landing. >> the plane eventually landed safely and is now being evaluated. meanwhile, more severe storms are expected in texas today. your forecast in just a few moments, the jury and former president trump's hush money trial will hear closing arguments. >> today. the defense is expected to attack the credibility of trump's former fixer, michael cohen, the only witness to testify that trump was directly involved in the scheme. prosecutors will detail the evidence, claiming trump falsified business records to cover up payments to a star before the 2016 election. abc's aaron katersky has been covering the trial. >> trump will be in court, as he

has for the last six weeks, and the trial is clearly on his mind . a memorial day social media post devolved into an attack on the judge. trump remains under a gag order, but the judge is fair game. the jury could begin deliberating tomorrow. >> now to the global outcry after a deadly israeli airstrike in gaza, dozens of civilians reportedly killed. the backlash spreading now to the u.s. protesters blocking a freeway in california. abc's perry russom is here now with more. perry. good morning andrew. >> good morning. just weeks after president biden warned israel not to attack heavily populated areas in rafah, a deadly airstrike is raising questions about how the white house will respond. this morning, the biden administration is reportedly assessing whether this israeli airstrike in rafah sunday crossed president biden's red line. the attack leaving a refugee camp engulfed in flames. people screaming in horror. 50 people were killed, hundreds injured, according to the hamas

run health ministry, says this woman saying we were here in tents and suddenly we found rockets falling on us. there is nowhere safe for us to go. her family, now forced to move for the eighth time, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu calls the airstrike a tragic mishap, saying there was a technical failure that will be investigated. the israeli military says it was conducting an intelligence based strike which killed two senior hamas officials, and that it regrets any harm to uninvolved civilians during combat. the deadly strike targeted a location only 650ft from a designated humanitarian area. more than 1 million palestinians have fled to rafah during the war to seek refuge. president biden earlier this month threatened to withhold weapons from israel if its forces entered the city. >> i made it clear that if they go into rafah, they haven't gone into rafah yet. if they go into rafah, i'm not supplying the

weapons that have been used historically to deal with rafah, to deal with the cities. >> the attack on rafah sparking protests here in the u.s. pro-palestinian demonstrators blocking this freeway in los angeles, a u.s. official says material from sunday's airstrike may have ignited a fuel tank, creating that huge fire. a white house spokesperson calls the images devastating, saying israel must protect civilians, but also says israel has a right to target hamas militants. rhiannon. >> all right, perry, thank you for that update. new details this morning about the killing of former general hospital star johnny wactor. police in los angeles are searching for suspects in the shooting. family and friends say wactor saw someone who appeared to be working on his car, but the suspects were actually stealing the catalytic converter. they say wactor was killed while protecting a female coworker. >> the person looked up. they had a mask on and they pulled out a gun. and from what i understand, johnny literally stood in between himself and his colleague and the shooter just

pulled the trigger and ran away. >> police are now gathering surveillance video from that area. >> pope francis is accused of using a homophobic slur during a meeting at the vatican. italian media reports it happened when francis was talking to bishops and said that gay men should not be admitted to seminaries, but some are suggesting francis made an honest mistake, saying his comment may have been lost in translation because italian is his second language. >> now to an abc news exclusive we are hearing from the pennsylvania man detained in the caribbean for months away from his family because he says he accidentally had ammunition in his luggage, and he's describing his long ordeal to good morning america. the pennsylvania dad held in turks and caicos for bringing ammunition in his bag, says he was preparing for doomsday. >> i truly felt like i could not breathe for three and a half months, brian hager had been

detained by the island nation since february, when airport authorities found hunting bullets in his luggage, which he says he did not know he had. >> turks and caicos recently passed a strict gun law calling for a 12 year prison sentence for carrying ammo. hager had to spend more than a week in jail before posting bail. >> i was with three folks that were accused of murder, it was scary. you just don't know who. who's next to you, who's coming in? >> he was in turks and caicos for more than three months while awaiting sentencing. he and his wife walked into court friday to learn his fate. everything was about to start to give ashley what could have potentially been the last hug and the last kiss that we get to share together for a very long time. >> it just it hurt so bad, so bad. >> but a judge granted brian a suspended sentence, essentially saying a 12 year punishment did not fit his crime and agreeing to just a fine for 101 days. >> finally, it was over. it was

bear spray actually saved his life. >> the nfl kicker is facing sexual assault allegations from two flight attendants. a new lawsuit describes a party like atmosphere on the team's plane. here's abc's derek dennis. >> this morning, former jacksonville jaguars kicker brandon mcmanus in trouble for some alleged contact off the field. espn reports a new lawsuit accuses mcmanus of rubbing against and grinding against two flight attendants on a team chartered plane while the jaguars were traveling to london for a game last year, attempting this field goal from 44 yards away. and he got it. according to espn, the lawsuit claims the fight quickly turned into a party, and that mcmanus passed out $100 bills to encourage several flight attendants to drink and dance inappropriately for him, and that mcmanus sexually assaulted two of the flight attendants in front of other players. the suit claims. one of the flight attendants made eye contact with another jaguars player, whom she said looked ashamed of mcmanus

behavior. an attorney for mcmanus calls the allegations absolutely fictitious and demonstrably false. the jaguars are also named in the lawsuit. the team says it's looking into the matter. it comes as the nfl looks to expand overseas travel, playing more games and potentially even basing a team in another country. we have five games in europe this year, we expect to do more games in the future. we're looking at games around the world and we believe this is our next big frontier. >> the jaguars did not resign mcmanus this offseason. his new team, the washington commanders, says it's looking into the situation and takes the allegations very seriously. andrew rhiannon. >> all right derek thank you for that. a star from hgtv is facing a lawsuit accused of breach of contract and building a defective house. dave mars and his wife are seen on the show fixer to fabulous. his two companies are named in the lawsuit. an arkansas couple who bought the home in question claim not a single repair was
