today that sunshine will warm us up well into the 60s. so right now we have mainly 50s on the board. some of our cooler valleys like danville and napa coming in at about 49 degrees. but get ready for a warm afternoon along the coast. i mean, look at this forecast. sunny skies, upper 50s, lower 60s today. light breeze out there is shaping up to be fantastic across the entire region. go to the bay shoreline. we warm pretty fast. by 11 a.m. we're already near 70 degrees, and then by 4 p.m. we're closing in on 80 and some of our warmest cities around the bay shoreline. now inland, looking lovely. we get pretty warm here, pretty fast. and by the afternoon, under full sunshine, mid and upper 80s for daytime highs. let's check in with amanda. commutes going yeah. >> good morning drew here at 602a little bit of sunlight on the sigalert in san jose. you can see it's this big rig that's on its side. it hit some barrels. it's carrying 40,000 pounds of strawberries. and because it hit those barrels, you can see that sand in the roadway. this is shut down northbound 101 to 880. and then northbound 880 to 101 in san

jose. it's been this way since about three this morning. let's get you around it, though. if you're traveling hitting the road, take 87 or 680 instead. it's sure to be an issue for the next few hours as well. back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. happening today. convicted murderer scott peterson will face a judge remotely again in the latest attempt to get a new trial. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez is live in redwood city, and gloria, today's hearing is all about evidence from more than 20 years ago. >> it is kumasi. his lawyers are focusing on a van and a bloody mattress that was found near the peterson home in modesto. this is scott peterson continues fighting for a new trial. and today a judge will be hearing arguments about whether to revisit dna evidence in the murder of laci peterson and her unborn child 20 years ago. the la innocence project would like items from a burnt out van tested with state of the art dna detection, and this includes the testing of the entire bloodied mattress that was found inside the van, not just a sample. if

any, of laci's dna was to be recovered in the van, that could place her as alive. when peterson went fishing 20 years ago, peterson was convicted of murdering his wife laci and their unborn son, connor. laci and connor's bodies were found in the san francisco bay in april of 2003, but uc davis forensics expert ashley hall does not think new testing will make a difference in the case, as peterson's attorneys try to revive a theory that burglars killed laci, the technology, the assays, the way that we collect and analyze evidence has not changed enough since 2019 that these samples warrant retesting and hall is worried if the judge agrees to the retesting, it could open the floodgates for similar appeals in other cases, and the prosecution argues there is no need for dna evidence because other evidence convict peterson live in redwood city.

school fight in novato. video shows at least one girl being assaulted during lunch time last friday. there were at least three girls beating down on her, while other students surrounded them, some filming this fight. it happened at sinaloa middle school. upset parents attended a meeting at the school last night. an update from police is expected today. melanie sanchez says her daughter was arrested because she was seen on camera throwing punches. she claims her daughter and others were bullied by the student who was attacked on video. >> hugging my daughter goodbye when she's never been away from me. that did it. >> when they took her to away today. >> yeah, yeah, and i can imagine how the other parents felt when they came home from work and their daughter was gone. >> police say school administrators knew about an initial attack thursday. on friday, two extra private security guards were brought in, along with a number of additional administrators. the two district wide school resource officers were not on campus. >> the developments uc santa cruz will hold remote classes

today and tomorrow in response to a new wave of pro-palestinian protests. protesters blocked the entrances to the university for more than ten hours yesterday. university officials say they cut off access to emergency vehicles and prevented employees and students from leaving the university. chancellor called the protests, quote, extremely dangerous, promising severe penalties. protests have been happening on campus since may 1st. graduate workers who are a part of the united auto workers union joined the protests on may 20th, and now the uaw membership has expanded its strike at ucla and uc davis. hundreds of unionized academic workers hit the picket lines yesterday, joining their counterparts at uc santa cruz. now these are grad students who teach, do research and support faculty. they are on strike to protest. university of california's response to pro-palestinian protests on campuses. they want uc administrators to give amnesty to students who are facing anywhere from arrests to

disciplinary actions for protesting. >> if there is no amnesty for the students and the student workers that were peacefully protesting in our campus and because of that are not facing charges and all the way to eviction from the university. there is you know, that's just the bare minimum that we're asking for. >> ucla vice chancellor mary osako said in a statement, quote, students are paying tuition and fees to learn and were dismayed by deliberate outside disruptions that get in the way of that. students want to hear their professors teach, not the piercing sounds of trumpets, drums and slogans being shouted right outside their classroom windows. >> a south bay doctor is home after getting stuck in gaza. this is video of that homecoming doctor haley sheikholeslami is a physician at sutter health in san carlos. she went to gaza on a volunteer medical mission. she was only supposed to be there for two weeks, but while she was there, the israeli military shut down the rafah border, leaving her stuck. >> i'm glad to be home. i'm glad

deaths. a bill requiring narcan to be added to first aid kits has advanced to the state senate. narcan is a nasal spray that can reverse an opioid overdose. amanda this bill is advancing as one san francisco supervisor is urging the city to begin testing for a drug that's

being blamed for hundreds of overdoses across the country. >> yeah, reggie. and we know narcan is really good at reversing fentanyl overdoses. now, supervisor matt dorsey is warning about fentanyl laced with the animal tranquilizer or medetomidine. now, dorsey says chicago, philadelphia, indianapolis, toronto and vancouver are seeing the drug in fentanyl. he says it's very potent and dangerous. dorsey is asking for the metal medical examiner's toxicology office to start screening for the drug. >> we periodically update our testing regime when feasible, and that is certainly a substance that we would add to our list of testing regime. >> the office already screens more than 200 drugs that can be synthesized and sold last year, the dea warned of an uptick in use of another veterinary drug, nicknamed tranq. back to you, reggie. >> thanks, amanda. in the east bay, a man shot by a pittsburgh police officer two years ago is now suing the department. ashton porter says he was experiencing a mental health crisis and

locked himself in a hampton inn hotel room. his family called police for help. officers shot porter when he left his room with a knife. he claims the department and several officers violated his civil rights during the 2022 encounter. >> i called out for help. i explained to him that i really didn't understand what was going on at the time, and i just wanted time to get some sleep, try to clear my mind in whatever way i could. >> the contra costa da's office charged porter with assaulting an officer, trespassing and refusing to leave. we reached out to the pittsburgh police department. we're waiting for a reply. >> new details in a south bay shooting that killed one woman, injured a man and led to an hours long standoff with police. all of this happened on memorial day on north 20th street in san jose. neighbors reported hearing several gunshots, some initially thinking it was fireworks. san jose police say officers found a woman who had extensive physical

trauma inside the house. they also saw a male suspect who then self barricaded. he eventually surrendered after 2.5 hours, then was arrested. police say the woman was not the only victim during the investigation. >> we did discover that he did brandish a firearm and shoot an additional adult male victim who was there at the incident, and he was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries. >> the woman's death marked the city of san jose's 16th homicide of the year. that number is trending higher than last year at this time, when there were 11. >> new details about the timeline to get a controversial proposal in solano county before voters. we could know as soon as june 12th if the california forever plan will appear on the ballot this november. abc seven has been following this story for quite some time. developers have bought up huge chunks of land around travis air force base in fairfield. they want to

build a city for 400,000 people. last month, they turned in signatures to get this on the ballot. now the county is verifying those signatures. if the registrar voters can verify enough signatures by june 12th, the process will move forward. at the june 25th board of supervisors meeting. >> robots will be in charge of filling up drivers, tanks across gas stations in the emirates, abu dhabi national oil company launched a pilot project introducing a robotic fueling arm meant to provide an ai driven experience. so the arm uses sensors and cameras to extend toward the car, open the fuel tank cap and then align the nozzle to fill up the car. its creators hope that this will support existing staff, boost productivity, and reduce wait times. >> interesting, right? >> and they also hope it won't attack them, right? >> it's i like that it's like locked in place so it can't like come after you. that's a nice little added benefit. you know i support this is cool. i do on

music mogul sean diddy combs, according to cnn investigates, have notified possible witnesses that they could be brought in to testify in new york city since november 8th. lawsuits named combs, seven of them accusing him of sexual assault. one of them, filed by former girlfriend cassie ventura, has been settled . investigators are still gathering evidence and questioning potential sources in their federal probe. a virgin atlantic flight from london to san francisco was forced to return to heathrow monday, after the pilot reported a cracked windshield. here's a live look at sfo. that's where the flight was headed. a virgin atlantic spokesperson tells abc seven news the captain reversed course about 3.5 hours after departing london, while over iceland. that flight was canceled. next, at 630, a big win for lgbtq advocates as a bill that would have cut some trans rights in california fails to make the

judge will be hearing arguments about whether to revisit that dna evidence. prosecutors have argued it's not necessary. and today peterson will be appearing virtually. the hearing starts at 9:00 this morning. of course, we'll have updates for you at 11:00 today. live in redwood city. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks. gloria san mateo police are calling a recent string of drive by shootings involving toy gel blasters alarming. on sunday, police received three different 911 calls within three hours from communy meers saying they had been shot at. a man and his pregnant wife say they were shot multiple times in the third incident. officers say the suspects used guns similar to what you see here on the screen. they shoot out gel filled pellets up to 200ft per second. some of the victims were reportedly shot in the face and almost got hit in the eye. residents are pretty surprised by all this. >> it's really surprising because i've never seen anything like that. i've been here lots

of times and it's always felt safe. >> three people have been arrested. police say they're being charged with assault with a deadly weapon. >> crime victims in san francisco will soon have access to more help. the city has announced the establishment of the office of victim and witness rights. this office will provide support and assistance to victims and their families in the aftermath of a crime, during criminal prosecution and after a verdict is reached, the crime. the office will also connect crime victims to available resources citywide, and it will be led by civil rights attorney ivy lee, who's worked in the mayor's office as a policy advisor on public safety and victims rights. >> this office will have one purpose, which is to try to make government work better for survivors and the people who serve them. >> we have so many organizations and people who do this work every single day, and now you have a city department that is leading the effort and will make

our about a recall involving nissan vehicles. that's been going on for years. amanda nissan is urging people with certain cars to stop driving them because it could be dangerous. >> kumasi. this urgent warning out this morning involves a recall you've likely heard about. nissan says there are still more than 84,000 people who have not had their dangerous takata airbags replaced. now, those airbags have been in question for years. they can explode and send metal fragments flying. as many as 58 people were injured since 2015 because of this issue. one person was killed by an exploding inflator in 2018. the warning covers certain 2002 through 2006 centrist small cars, some 2002 through 2004, pathfinder suvs and 2002 and 2003 infiniti q suvs. nissan says if you have one of these cars that is not had the airbags replaced, you should stop driving it immediately. they are so

concerned they're even offering to have the car towed to your dealer to have the issue fixed. back to you at the desk. >> okay, amanda. thank you. today, santa clara county will start spray treatments to try to get rid of aggressive mosquitoes spotted in east san jose. the mosquitoes are known to carry the zika virus. yellow fever and other illnesses. 12 have been detected recently. trying to kill off the adult mosquitoes hasn't worked, so the county will now target larva with insecticide spray. the county says pets and people should remain inside during the treatments. this is going to take place over the next few months. wildlife officials in south lake tahoe say a man accused of shooting and killing a bear cub is not going to be cited. >> the bear league says this 16 month old bear walked into a home through an open door, likely trying to find something to eat. the homeowner says the bear went for his dog and that's what he shot it. the bear then went outside, climbed up a tree and fell. he says he shot the bear again to euthanize it
