a.m. off dixon landing road. >> abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with one of the homeowners about a visitor who left its mark. >> surveillance cameras captured a mountain lion roaming through two milpitas neighborhoods. the first sighting was around 2 a.m. wednesday at friendly village mobile home park and so it jumped on that, yeah, nguyen showed us to her backyard, where the mountain lion jumped onto one of their sheds. you can still see it left swipes of paw prints on the sides. >> i was like, freaked out because i was like, that wasn't like it was in front of my, like, window. >> doris fee was sleeping in her room just feet away and never heard anything. >> that's crazy to me that like, some, like a cat so big was like walking through our neighborhood. >> two hours later, around 4:30 a.m, milpitas police said a resident's ring camera captured a mountain lion near fair meadow way that's less than three miles from where the first sighting

was captured. >> sightings of mountain lions and residential areas, i would say are are rare. >> the department is deploying thermal imaging drones to search for the animal. they shared the videos on their social media accounts just awareness for our community members, especially those walking or riding their bicycles so that they're more aware of their surroundings. we showed residents the videos. no, that's way too big. >> that's way too big. that's scary. >> sedan. palmer said he found out about the sighting through a neighborhood group chat. >> i mean, i was pretty scared. i usually take walks at night, but no more walks at night. milpitas police are encouraging community members for any additional mountain lion sightings. >> call 911. doris said she'll be sleeping with her bedroom window closed. >> definitely closed, i'm not leaving that open. no way in milpitas. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news smart move. >> all right, new developments

with the case of convicted killer scott peterson. late today, a san mateo superior court judge ruled the la innocence project may have new dna testing performed on one of the items gathered as evidence in the death of peterson's wife, laci, and their unborn son, connor, 20 years ago. i-team reporter dan noyes was in san mateo superior court and has the update. >> the director of the los angeles innocence project gave an hour and 20 minute rapid fire argument to scott peterson deserves to have the deaths of his wife, laci and their unborn son connor in 2002 investigated further no murder weapon was found, no time or even date of death is established, no cause and manner of death were ever established. >> there were no eyewitnesses implicating mr. peterson. the evidence against him centered almost entirely on conjecture over possible motive. >> peterson, now 51 years old, watched from mule creek state prison, where he's serving life without the possibility of parole. his lawyers say favorable dna evidence would change the outcome of the trial,

and they called for new dna testing for target bag wrapped in duct tape found near the spot where laci and conner's bodies were found. and they want new dna testing of a blood stain on a mattress from a van set on fire in modesto two days after laci disappeared. no evidence connecting that case to peterson at this point. >> the bottom line is that that mattress really needs to be tested, just thoroughly, completely tested. >> is there anything on it or not? we don't know. >> a special prosecutor from stanislaus county who worked the first scott peterson case said dna testing done on that mattress in 2013 found only male blood. he said the murder case has been adjudicated fully. >> we're not just talking about the first motion. we're not even talking about the stipulation. we're talking about. this is the third bite at the apple that the defendant is asking this court to address. >> harris focused the hearing back on peterson and his litany of lies. he told new girlfriend amber frey in the weeks before

his pregnant wife disappeared. >> the defense has never explained how mr. peterson was able to tell people that this would be his first holiday. back in the christmas, his first holiday without his wife. >> harris also said the defense never explained why peterson was researching tide charts for san francisco bay. and then weeks later, laci and conner's bodies were found in that same location, repeated lie after lie after lie after lie of this defendant, during the investigation of all of these different things that dealt with these two disappearance of his wife and unborn son, the judge approved dna testing for that one piece of duct tape. >> but denied new dna testing for everything else, including twine found on connor's neck. he had no injuries anywhere on his body for the i-team. dan noyes, abc seven news. >> testimony will continue for a second day tomorrow in the state criminal trial for david depape, the man charged with assaulting the husband of speaker emeritus

nancy pelosi. today's opening statements revealed new details about the mental state of depape leading up to the attack. his defense team revealed depape struggled with a personality disorder that led to fantastical thinking, including a desire to interview nancy pelosi. his lawyers believe the bizarre behavior does not mean depape intended to kill paul pelosi when he broke into the couple's home back in 2022. >> the most serious charge here is the attempted murder in order to be convicted of an attempt crime, you need to have specific intent. >> depape has already been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the assault on paul pelosi. the state case could bring more felonies that carry a life sentence. the trial continues tomorrow and friday. paul pelosi is expected to testify. >> all right, let's shift for a moment to the weather. it's feeling a little more like a summer in some parts of the bay area. >> certainly is. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya. yeah >> and dan and anna, those temperatures inching up today,

would ban those notifications. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has the story. >> a bill aimed at protecting transgender students privacy is one step closer to becoming california law. the state senate education committee wednesday advanced a bill banning school districts from setting policies requiring parents to be notified if their child identifies as transgender. a move some school districts have already made. gail chavez is the executive director of lyric, a local nonprofit providing refuge for lgbtq+ youth. and they say forcing students to come out to their parents is dangerous. >> many of these really conservative, outlandish bills and resolutions force them, force them to be unsafe, to have them in a vulnerable place at school. >> aaron friday is with protect kids ca, the organization behind a failed attempt to get a measure onto the november ballot requiring school districts to

out transgender students to their parents. she says parents have the right to know if their child is identifying as transgender, and it shouldn't be up to educators. >> what this bill will do is it is permitting adults to make decisions for other people's children. they are keeping these secrets from parents because they fear that parents will harm their children or abandon them. >> meanwhile, parents like nikki koger are taking to the streets of lafayette in support of transgender children. she's the parent of a transgender student and says not all parents are as supportive. >> your parent isn't always the safest person, unfortunately. and so no, i don't believe that. if there's a child who's in a situation where their parent is potentially going to be the person who is unsafe with them, i don't think that child should have to choose to out themselves or the school district to do it for them. >> the bill will now go to on be heard by the senate health committee. tara campbell, abc

seven news. >> historic but controversial flag that's become a symbol of the far right is now removed from in front of san francisco city hall, according to a city official. the appeal to heaven flag was swapped with an american flag on saturday. officials say the controversial flag was initially raised on flag day in 1964. it was raised at civic center and was part of what is known as the pavilion of american flags. the appeal to heaven flag has led to calls for supreme court justice samuel alito to recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 presidential election and january 6th, but he's refusing to do so. the call started after questions were raised about flags at two properties. alito owns the appeal to heaven flag appeared outside his new jersey vacation home, an upside down american flag flew outside his virginia home, but alito says this was part of a neighborhood dispute. the upside down flag had become a symbol for some donald trump supporters. >> there's a lot more coming. we're seeing a little relief

the prices of roughly 5000 items, primarily groceries and other everyday goods. amazon fresh announced it was cutting the prices on roughly 4000 grocery items. abc seven news reporter jeff stone spoke with the ceo of a family owned northern california organic food company, who says they're doing what they can just to keep the prices low. >> well, they certainly are. dan i've been posting about food prices on my facebook and instagram pages on and off for years, and i'll admit, i've been called cheap here and there. but when i talk about prices lately, everyone chimes in dozens of comments from viewers who are upset over the additional price they paid for dinner or for a coffee or at the grocery store. believe it or not, some food companies are behind the scenes trying to keep costs low. >> it's these little price tags that may haunt you when you go to the store. wait, how much is it? >> my goal is to say, how can we sell it for less? >> that's gary cohen, he's the president of natural value, an organic food and eco friendly

company based out of west sacramento with products going all over the country. >> they've been family run for 29 years at valencia whole foods in san francisco. their products can be seen on the shelves. overall, food prices are officially up more than 20% from where they were in 2020, according to federal data. cohen says he is concerned over the actions of other food companies, companies coming out and saying that their sales went up 1, but their gross profits or net profits went up 5. >> and so i think there is a certain amount of companies taking advantage of cost increases to pad their profit margins. >> and cohen is not the only one talking about the ten or so main companies that dominate the market. >> they are. all you have to do is walk in the grocery store, right and understand something's wrong. >> joe maxwell, a farm action, testified about possible price

gouging in a senate hearing last week. >> the evidence that we have clearly rests that that blame right at the doorstep of the largest food corporations in the world. >> he'd like to see the federal trade commission take action. >> they need to do more. they've got the backing of the white house, and they need to be all in on taking on these companies and bringing about justice for america's consumers. >> but uc berkeley economists i've talked with say that inflation is real, pointing to minimum wage and labor costs, among other factors, as to what happens next. mixed opinions. >> they will stabilize, hopefully. and they and they will go up. i don't see them going down unless there's some other big disruption in the next few months. >> then we should see prices returning to something a bit more normal. >> cohen, though, admits that business has been strong because their organic products are often some of the lowest priced products. >> it's sad that this is how

we've had. we've been able to grow so dramatically with these customers because people are hurting, but at least the option is there for them, correct? right. >> j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> scientists believe ancient egyptians may have tried to treat cancer. medical texts from the time show healers were aware of cancer and the visible tumors it produced. researchers looked at scans of a skull more than 4000 years old. they found cut marks around lesions believed to be malignant tumors, according to scientists. healers used sharp metal instruments to remove the growths. however, it's unclear whether this was a surgery meant to heal the patient while they were alive or was an autopsy. after their death, a major breakthrough in the effort to help stroke survivors. and it happened right here in the bay area. ucsf scientists have developed an ai brain implant that's bilingual. it's helping a man communicate in english and spanish. nearly

two years after a stroke left him paralyzed, the patient first received the implant in 2019, but it took another three years for ucsf's team to train it to be bilingual. using ai. the patient was not bilingual before his stroke. >> that's truly amazing. it is. well, for the first time in decades, san francisco will host an oceanside parade to celebrate independence day. the area's supervisor has announced plans for a parade and picnic at great highway park june 29th. that's the saturday before the 4th of july. you're invited to bring your own float. parade goers are being asked to decorate bikes and wagons to be part of this event. a float decorating party will be held the day before inside golden gate park. that's fun. >> abc's hit show station 19 will end its run tomorrow night. the cast and crew are preparing to say goodbye after seven seasons. the show started as a spinoff to gray's anatomy, but took on a life and audience all its own, and the star of station 19 says fans will not be
