free. so we have sunny skies everywhere, including the coast. so you know it's going to be another warm one if you like. yesterday. love today because temperatures are a few degrees warmer. in fact, this afternoon. so we begin in the 50s for the most part. your light jacket. you need it for the next 1 or 2 hours. but post 8 a.m. those temperatures will feel quite nice. and then we'll get warm to hot this afternoon. so looking at the coast first thing, we'll find temperatures topping out in the upper 50s to lower 60s. very similar to where we were yesterday with a lot of sunshine as we head around the bay shoreline. it is bright out there. it's going to stay sunny this afternoon. it is warm for this time of the year, upper 70s to lower 80. so certainly feeling a bit more like summer than late spring. and then as we head inland, it's even hotter than yesterday. we have clear skies out there, temperatures close to 80 degrees already by 11 a.m, and then our warmest areas by 4 p.m. upper 80s to the lower 90. let's check in with amanda and see how the commute is going. yeah. >> good morning drew. we're going to first take a look at our overall map. the typical slowdown at the altamont pass,

noting a motorcycle crash cleared. but there is major stop traffic on westbound 205. and we're also following this sigalert in the gilroy area. a big rig overturned after 230 this morning on westbound 152 at ferguson, 20 gallons of fuel spilled, stopping traffic there. take bloomfield to highway 25 or 1 56 to 25 to get around it. and i'm also tracking breaking news out of the east bay, where a three alarm fire is now under control at the lake chabot public market in castro valley. the building houses several small businesses and food vendors, including a coffee shop, ramen restaurant and an ice cream shop. if you know this area, this is on lake chabot road, not far from the castro valley community center. alameda county firefighters spent an hour battling the flames inside, but they ended up having to move outside because the roof started to give way. video shows heavy flames coming from the entire building. the fire was contained to the public market, but some houses behind it took on some water crews are working to make

sure they don't sustain any damage and we want to get you to a live look at the area right now. the sun finally up on the scene, you can see a lot of fire trucks on the street. it's unclear how the fire started. we do have calls into alameda county fire for more information. back to you. >> day two of deliberations in former president donald trump's hush money trial set to get underway in less than 30 minutes in new york city. jurors deliberated the case yesterday for four hours. so here's a live look at the courthouse where people are gathering ahead of today's proceedings. yesterday, the jury sent the judge two notes, one requesting to rehear jury instructions and the other asking to be read back. some testimony. jurors will determine whether trump is guilty of 34 felony charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment to stormy daniels. >> testimony is set to resume this morning in the state criminal trial of the man charged with assaulting the husband of speaker emeritus nancy pelosi. opening statements yesterday revealed new details about david depapes mental state

leading up to that 2022 attack. his defense team says he struggled with the personality disorder that led to, quote, fantastical thinking, including a desire to interview nancy pelosi. his attorneys believe the bizarre behavior does not mean depape intended to kill paul pelosi when he broke into their home in 2022. >> the most serious charge here is the attempted murder. in order to be convicted of an attempt crime, you need to have specific intent. >> the pap has been sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the assault on paul pelosi. he's facing a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted in this state case. paul pelosi is expected to testify tomorrow. >> new developments in the scott peterson case. a judge says only one item of evidence can be retested, and that item is not the mattress, which his attorneys believed could help lead to a new trial. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez was in the courtroom yesterday.

attorneys have been asking for more than a dozen items to be retested. >> yes, reggie. and among those 14 items that peterson's attorneys wanted tested or retested for dna, a bloody mattress from a van set on fire in modesto. after laci disappeared, scott peterson's attorneys are trying to link that van fire in a local burglary to her disappearance and clear peterson in the death of his wife, laci, and their unborn son, connor. more than 20 years ago. now, the one item that the san mateo superior court judge will allow for new or additional dna testing is a piece of duct tape that was found on laci's pants. it was tested in 2003 and was found to have human dna, but at the time it could not be traced to anyone, peterson is now 51 years old and watched the hearing virtually from mule creek state prison, where he's serving life without the possibility of parole. his attorneys with the la innocence project claimed that laci witnessed a break in across the street from their home the day she went missing. afterwards the burnt out van was

found nearby with a bloody mattress inside, and the defense wants the mattress retested for dna. but the judge denied the request, saying the evidence presented is not enough to warrant a retest. prosecutors say the burglary was two days after she vanished and that the van has nothing to do with the case. but the director of the los angeles innocence project argued that peterson deserves to have the deaths of laci, and conner investigated further. >> the no murder weapon was found no time or even date of death was established. no cause and manner of death were ever established. >> the defense has never explained how mr. peterson was able to tell people that this would be his first holiday. back in the christmas, his first holiday without his wife, a special prosecutor who worked the first scott peterson case, talked about the lies that peterson told his new girlfriend, amber frey, in the weeks before his pregnant wife disappeared. >> and he also said the defense

never explained why peterson was researching tide charts for the san francisco bay. and then weeks later, laci and conner's bodies were found in that same location. the judge said she's not determining whether he's entitled to a new trial, but whether he'll have access to test evidence. and of course, his attorneys are seeking a new trial. but it's still too early to know if that will happen. the next court hearing is scheduled for july. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you. gloria, i leaders will be coming together in san francisco again today for day two of the gen i summit, 10,000 people are expected at this three day conference. it is sponsored by microsoft and gpt dow, including big names like nvidia, openai, microsoft and ibm. the summit is also attracting people from all around the world. >> there's no ai event yet in the uh- in malaysia and indonesia, so that's why we flew here to actually learn from the experts here, because there are

there right now on the front range, but into the afternoon will likely see some severe storms pop up. and that could lead to a couple of delays around dia. just be aware of that. otherwise it's looking pretty quiet. honolulu looking nice, a little breezy, a high of 82 degrees there. back here at home it's going to be warm. future weather showing you it already feels mild at 10 a.m. mid 60s to the mid 70s under full sunshine later this afternoon. our hottest areas going into the low 90s. so if you liked yesterday's warm weather, today is a few degrees warmer than that in spots 78 in oakland today we'll go to a warm 70 in the city, 89 in santa rosa, about 92 in fairfield, 90 in antioch, 85. in san jose. it's warm along the peninsula, san mateo at 76 degrees. we are dealing with morning marine layer clouds in southern california, giving way to sunshine a high of 75. in la. our valley is getting hot. in the 90s. our deserts even hotter, surpassing about 100 degrees in death valley in palm springs, south lake tahoe, looking nice at 71. so the three day forecast will show you we'll keep it sunny and summer-like here today and tomorrow, but we

it erupted for the fifth time since december after a series of earthquakes yesterday afternoon. now, video from this morning shows activity has calmed down, but that eruption was the area's most vigorous. iceland. officials say the lava shot up nearly 165ft into the sky. barriers are now in place to protect a nearby town, which is used to volcanic eruptions. the us justice department says they've taken down one of the world's largest cybercrime networks. officials say chinese national eunice wang created the botnet. this is a network of malware infected computers secretly controlled by someone who is not the owner. the botnet spanned more than 19 million ip addresses in nearly 200 countries, with more than 600,000 here in the u.s. u.s. attorney general merrick garland says authorities arrested wang and seized millions worth of

luxury assets, including a ferrari and a rolls royce. >> he then made more than $99 million selling cyber criminals access to his network of devices . >> the doj says wang's customers allegedly defrauded the u.s. government of almost $6 billion. time now is 615. we have new information about a story we've been following for several weeks now. some brown pelicans found starving along the california coast will be returning to the wild today. since april, nearly 340 emaciated pelicans have been taken to wildlife rescue centers. and now amanda has more on their release. >> kumasi international bird rescue in sausalito has been helping the pelicans get better. the first group of rehabilitated , rehabilitated birds will be released at fort baker this afternoon. experts say the birds are having a hard time finding fish. nearly 40% have been found tangled up in fishing gear. it's not clear why this is happening.

abc seven news spoke with a veterinarian and the international bird rescue earlier this month about the mystery pelicans. >> never forget how to find fish. but sometimes they run into problems. finding it can be a weather problem. could be a food availability problem. >> what i've learned in my time here is that they can come back from a lot of severe injuries, so we're confident that we can get a lot of these birds back into the wild and healthy again. >> experts say if you see a pelican in distress, call your local animal control international bird rescue is asking for donations to help with the cost to care for the birds. the group says it costs about $1,000 a day to keep them fed. kumasi >> thank you amanda. local businesses are expecting a big boost this weekend when a huge rave comes to san francisco. more than 20,000 people are expected saturday at civic center. the electronic music concert features dj skrillex and producer fred again. 40% of attendees are reportedly coming from outside the bay area. >> i don't think that there's

shoreline. it is warm. it's mild , pretty fast here and we'll find temperatures in the upper 70s to the lower 80s. and even along the coast we are clear with temperatures in the 60s, so we are summer-like in a lot of areas today. widespread 80s. you can see in the south bay a high of 85. in san jose, along the peninsula, from the coast to the bay shoreline, we have sunshine 78, in palo alto, 76 in san mateo, pacifica at 62 degrees. as we look across the city, it's another sunny day, no matter where you are in san francisco. 66 for the sunset, we'll head to 70 downtown. the financial district in the north bay. it is warm to hot. 83 san rafael mild and sausalito at 72, but 91 in cloverdale, 87, in sonoma, the east bay. it's bright and mild, 78 in oakland, warm in fremont at 81 and inland, we're getting hot 90 at antioch, 92, in brentwood, walnut creek, up to 87 with full sunshine. so this evening, just like yesterday, we do find a lack of marine cloud cover. so it's clear throughout the evening with mild temperatures. and that sets the stage for another clear night overnight tonight, with temperatures mainly in the low

like it. >> here comes the sun. let's go. we're finding warm temperatures this afternoon. if you liked yesterday, you'll love today because it's even warmer than we were yesterday. from the exploratorium camera. it is bright out there. you look at current sky conditions across the entire region, and we are reporting sunshine from the coast to the bay, shoreline and inland. so you know what that means. we are in store for warm weather this afternoon. now, right now we're starting out with temperatures mainly in the low and mid 50s. so i would take the light jacket with you, keep it on until about 8 a.m. and then after 8 a.m. those temperatures really do take off. so we warm fast today looking at the coast, we expect sunshine today. very similar to yesterday upper 50s, lower 60s. it's very lovely. along the coast around the bay shoreline where a couple of degrees warmer today compared to yesterday we have sunshine 70s already popping up at 11 a.m. and then by 4 p.m. we're going to the upper 70s and lower 80s. so dress more for summer than spring. you probably get away with t shirts and shorts for big portion of the bay shoreline today. inland certainly want to dress for

shows the heavy flames that came from the entire building. building earlier this morning. and now let's take a live look at the scene. alameda county firefighters say they they battled the flames for about an hour from inside. they had to move out after the roof started to give way. one woman who lives behind the building says she goes to the market all the time. >> we come down here like frequently. we come down to get ice cream after dinner or we'll come and get some meat at the at the uh- meat shop. it's, it looks devastating. >> it's unclear how the fire started. we do have calls into alameda county for more information on new development. >> scott peterson's attempt to get multiple items of evidence retested did not go as he planned, although one item will be looked at again. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez was inside the courtroom and gloria, a piece of duct tape will be retested. >> it will kumasi. it's a piece of duct tape that was found on laci's pants. it was tested in

2003, and it was found to have human dna, but at the time it could not be traced to anyone. scott peterson's new attorneys with the l.a. innocence project had requested new or additional dna testing for a total of 14 items, and they include a bloody mattress from a van set on fire in modesto. after laci disappeared. also, a target bag wrapped in duct tape found near where laci and conner's bodies were found, as well as twine found on connor's neck. this as they try to clear scott peterson of the death of his wife laci, and their unborn son, connor. more than 20 years ago. peterson wants a hearing virtually from mule creek state prison, where he's serving life without the possibility of parole. the defense claims a burglary and van are crucial to the case that laci witnessed a break in across the street from their home the day she went missing. afterwards, the burnt out van was found nearby with a bloody mattress inside the defense wants the mattress retested for dna, but the judge denied the

request, saying the evidence presented is not enough to warrant a retest. >> the bottom line is that that mattress really needs to be tested, just thoroughly, completely tested. is there anything on it or not? we don't know. we're not just talking about the first motion. >> we're not even talking about the stipulation. we're talking about. this is the third bite at the apple that the defendant is asking this court to address a special prosecutor who worked the first scott peterson case said dna testing done on that mattress in 2013 found only male blood. >> and prosecutors say the burglary was two days after she vanished, and that the van has nothing to do with the case. but there are questions over when that burglary was because the homeowners the next court hearing is scheduled for july. live in the studio gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. a san jose state professor who serves as an advisor to the students for

justice in palestine group, says she's been suspended. and she says it's because of her stance on the war in gaza. doctor sang kill shared a letter that she received from the university's vice president of personnel. it says the suspension was for repeated violations of university policies, despite notices. she says the accusations are false. >> i directed the students to do a march through the student rec center that never happened. we did not march through the student rec center. the other thing they said is that i directed the students to lay down their camps, and the students refused to listen to my orders. and like, again, that did not happen. >> so the suspension is for at least 60 days. abc seven reached out to the university, which said that it does not comment on personnel matters. new video overnight shows a blockade set up at uc santa cruz campus. pro-palestinian protesters have been blocking campus entrances this week. that's why all classes will be remote today. the blockade is located at the

west entrance at coolidge and high streets. students are protesting how the uc system has handled pro-palestinian protests at universities in east oakland. >> the lawyer for tenants affected by a fire at their apartment building will be meeting with the landlord tomorrow. now the fire happened, more than five months ago and they are still dealing with the aftermath of it. amanda is at the live desk with the lawsuit they just filed. amanda kumasi tenants say they have been dealing with electrical issues and pollution from a generator. >> they say the problems are related to an electrical fire in january that damaged the building. the tenants say all 18 units of the building were without power and hot water for a month after the fire. during that time, they say they spent thousands in out of pocket expenses. they claim their complaints went unanswered for months. they are now suing for reimbursement and breach of contract. one tenant says she has a doctor's note indicating fumes from that generator are causing health issues for her children. >> the landlord has committed a

outside of his new jersey home. an upside down american flag flew outside of his home in virginia, which he says was a part of a neighborhood dispute. the upside down flag became a symbol for donald trump supporters. >> milpitas residents are on alert following two rare mountain lion sightings caught on camera. the first shows a big cat taking a giant leap right next to someone's bedroom window. that sighting happened off of dixon landing road around 2 a.m. another happened two hours later near fair meadow way, which is about three miles away. one woman showed us her backyard where the mountain lion jumped onto one of her sheds. you can still see the swipes of paw prints on the walls. doris fee said she was sleeping in her room at the time. she didn't hear anything. >> i was like, freaked out because i was like that wasn't like it was in front of my window. that was crazy to me that like some like a cat so big was like walking through our neighborhood. >> >> a video of the second sighting shows a big cat. see

>> let's go to sutro tower this morning where we have sunshine out there. the headlines for the next few days. it's another warm one today it's sunny and summer-like for the weekend outlook. we turn slightly cooler, but we still keep clear skies and the extended outlook for much of next week, we're turning up the heat once again. that warm sunshine is here to stay, so just looking at the next 24 hours around the bay shoreline, you can see we'll go into the upper 70s and lower 80s for daytime highs. so it is a little bit warmer than we were yesterday. in fact, future weather showing you as we go hour by hour. we warm up nicely this morning, 60s and 70s by 10 a.m. and then into the afternoon. there you go. we're well into the 80s and 90s and our warmest spots inland. so highs today, a couple of degrees warmer than yesterday for a lot of us, up to 78 in oakland, 85 in san jose near 90 in santa rosa will go to 92 in fairfield. even the coast is looking lovely in the 60s and 70s. the three day forecast. here comes that slight cool down over the weekend. look at the entire weekend foreca

pitcher, then the benches cleared. there's a little bit of pushing and i was watching. nobody threw any punches. nobody got ejected. everybody calmed down. the game went on. the giants lost the game. now coincidentally, yesterday's incident happened seven years to the day after this drama. benches clearing at oracle and bryce harper also involved in this one. oh he was playing for the nationals at that time. he was upset about pitches in this instance that he deemed to be too close to hitting him. he got suspended for four games. >> wow. kentucky prosecutors dropped charges against the world's top golfer after he was arrested outside the pga championship nearly two weeks ago. you probably remember this. we showed it to you just moments after it happened. scottie scheffler was arrested for trying to drive around the scene of a fatal crash outside a golf course in louisville. he was charged with felony assault on a police officer after authorities say he dragged an officer who

attempted to stop his car. video of the incident, released last week, casts doubt on those claims. scheffler called the incident a big misunderstanding. plastic bags may not be an option in california stores anymore. as soon as 2026, assembly member rebecca bauer-kahan of orinda is working on one of the two identical bills, so the goal is to strengthen an existing ban that first took took effect ten years ago. but as you know, there's a loophole that allows grocery stores to sell thicker plastic bags, which are considered reusable. >> the reality is people are not really reusing them, so they're ending up as trash. >> lawmakers have until the end of august to pass one of the bills through each house. only one needs to pass in order to go to the governor for his signature. if passed, a paper bag made of mostly recycled material will cost you about $0.10. the companies that make the plastic bags are not a surprise against this idea. the american recyclable plastic bag

alliance says bans for stores and shoppers to switch to other products that are more expensive with food prices continuing to climb from near record inflation, these increased costs will be passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. and now it's your morning money report. now's a good time to stock up on items at your local walgreens. the drugstore has immediately cut prices on more than 1500 items. the company joins other retailers in marking down costs to bring in shoppers who are concerned about inflation hikes. items include toiletries, snacks, vitamins and other related merchandise. walgreens joins target, walmart and amazon in price slashing for consumers. as you may have noticed that fast food prices have been high in recent months. now, the president of mcdonald's is saying that the prices, quote, aren't that bad. it comes after reports of a big mac meal costing 18 bucks in some places. he says that was just one location in connecticut, and that the average price nationwide is about $9. he says

so it feels a little bit more like summer than late spring in the upper 70s and lower 80s. and then as we head along the coast, we'll find those temperatures quite pleasant in the low 60s. so highs in our microclimates very sunny and summer like here in the south bay, widespread 80s. you can see along the peninsula, the coast to the bay shoreline. it is bright, low 60s for half moon bay, but 82 for redwood city, 78 in mountain view in the city. it is sunny everywhere, including the sunset. the richmond in the 60s. we'll go 70 downtown today, so it feels very mild into the north bay. it's warm to hot 91 in cloverdale, 89 in calistoga, 87 in sonoma. then we head into the east bay. it is bright and mild. 78 in oakland, warm in union city at 8082. castro valley and heading inland. it's getting hot. we'll hit 92 in brentwood, 89 in concord, 88 in livermore. now, looking at the evening planner, very similar to yesterday, our marine layer is taking a break when it comes to any sort of fog upstairs. so we have clear skies throughout the
