j. trump, is guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree to conceal a scheme to corrupt the 2016 election. >> the manhattan district attorney just over an hour ago, following the conviction of donald trump on all 34 felony counts. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz trump continues to claim he is a, quote, very innocent man. abc seven news reporter luz pena is here with more on this unprecedent day loose in american history. >> that's right emma and dan. today's verdict means donald trump is now the first former president in us history to be convicted of a crime. the jury found him guilty on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the hush money payment to adult film actress stormy daniels outside the courthouse in new york, a crowd cheered guilty the moment the verdict was read

one person in the crowd with a make america great again hat who seemed stunned. former president donald trump addressed people outside the courthouse shortly after the verdict was read. here's what he said. >> this was a disgrace. this was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt. this a rigged trial, a disgrace. they wouldn't give us a venue change. we were at 5% or 6% district. in this area. this was a rigged, disgraceful trial. but the real verdict is going to be november fifth by the people. and they know what happened here and everybody knows what happened here. you have a saurus backed da and a whole thing. we didn't do a thing wrong. i'm a very innocent man and it's okay.

>> a short time later, he arrived at trump tower and raised a fist as supporters cheered him on. he'll spend the night there tonight, and is scheduled to hold a news conference at trump tower tomorrow at 8 a.m. our time two bay area legal experts talked to abc seven news about what happens next, and they say jail time is highly unlikely. >> it's going to be probation. i guarantee you he's a first time offender, just like you or me would be. he's a nonviolent offender. this is not a crime of a century. uh. this is this is treated as a misdemeanor. other than the fact that it was done to influence an election, which makes it a felony. i would be very surprised if there were any other sentence other than probation. >> there's nothing in the united states constitution that prohibits him from holding public office. he can still be elected president, but he's a florida resident. he just can't vote for himself. so that's the great irony. he can't vote for himself. but he could still be

president. >> constitutional experts also told abc seven news that previous supreme court rulings hold that congress cannot add qualifications to the office of the president. in addition, a state cannot prohibit convicted felons from running for federal office. it's important to note that former president donald trump will not officially be labeled a convicted felon until after his sentence. that's set to happen july 11th, but it's likely it's likely he'll appeal this conviction live in the studio. luz pena, abc seven news. >> all right, luis, thank you for that. the biden harris campaign issued this statement after the verdict, quote, in new york today, we saw that no one is above the law, then went on to say donald trump has always mistakenly believed he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain. but today's verdict does not change the fact that the american people face a simple reality. there is still only one way to keep donald

trump out of the oval office at the ballot box. convicted felon or not, trump will be the republican nominee for president. the threat trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. he is running an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution, pledging to be a dictator on day one and calling for our constitution to be terminated so he can regain and keep power. a second trump term means chaos ripping away americans freedoms and fomenting political violence , and the american people will reject it. this november. >> for a national representative for the california republican national committee is calling the trial unprecedented and highly critical of the verdict. >> this verdict is a disgrace for the american legal system. it was rigged from the beginning by a biased judge who should have recused himself. there were flawed jury instructions, improper evidence, improper denial of the admission of relevant evidence of a case that was rejected at the state federal and regulatory fec level

by multiple prosecutors who could have brought this case. this is the first time in history in new york that a documents and records case has been charged as a felony. >> harmeet dhillon was also critical of the judge for scheduling the sentencing just four days before the republican presidential nominee convention. >> the verdict might not have much of an effect on voters in a new marist poll, 67% of registered voters said a guilty verdict would not change how they vote. 76% said the same about a not guilty verdict. just 7% of voters said a guilty verdict would make them less likely to vote for trump in the presidential race. >> abc news brought you the verdict live and reported the jury's decision at the very moment every count was read, we will have live team coverage throughout the evening right here on abc seven. >> now to the latest in the state trial against the man convicted in federal court of attacking the husband of house speaker nancy pelosi today, a

dramatic recording from october 2022 played in a san francisco courtroom, with david depape explaining why he broke into pelosi's house. abc seven news reporter dan noyes was in court. joins us with the latest. >> dan and dan, i wish i could play the sound of that police interview, but as part of this ongoing trial to pat becomes angry and emotional because in his mind, nancy pelosi was part of a conspiracy to steal the election from donald trump in department 19 of san francisco superior court, 44 year old david depape is watching the prosecution build the case against him. piece by piece. they played a 59 minute interview with the defendant, recorded after he got caught on police body cam video hitting paul pelosi with a hammer. >> hey hey hey hey, what is going on? >> i'm not getting any answers. >> just two hours later, depape at san francisco general for a dislocated shoulder he suffered during his arrest. a police investigator interviews him while he lays cuffed to a gurney. she starts by asking, do you know why you're in custody?

depape answers, absolutely. he grows increasingly angry and emotional, claiming that nancy pelosi and other democrats committed crimes to steal the election from donald trump. then, depape says, i was going to hold her hostage and get her to tell the truth. if she didn't tell the truth, i'd break her kneecaps. adam gassner was a longtime san francisco defense attorney who's been keeping up on the depape trial. >> well, it's unclear whether he's going to testify, but if you hear his voice and you hear his ramblings or his rantings, the shake in his voice, the oddity of the way he speaks, it gives real insight into what he was like at that time. >> also today, the neurosurgeon who operated on paul pelosi showed a dramatic cat scan with a dent in his head about the size of a silver dollar. he described how he had to drill around the fracture, lift it up and reattach it with screws. another officer who rode with pelosi by ambulance to the hospital showed photos she took blood covering his face and his hands that were crossed on his

bare chest. >> i think it's really significant because it sympathizes and shows paul pelosi as a human being who is really seriously injured within his own home. it's very visceral. the jury cannot overlook that. >> the jury also saw a new body camera video taken by an officer who searched the house shortly after the attack, and who came upon those bags. depape left in the pelosi's yard. the officer started to search the bags and then he stopped. he worried about explosives, so he cleared the house and called for a bomb sniffing dog. no explosives were found. now all this sets the stage for the testimony of paul pelosi, which we expect for tomorrow. and of course, abc seven will be covering it. well late today, attorneys for depape said he's not feeling well, and the judge said if he has covid, the trial could go dark for a few days, so we'll find out tomorrow. >> all right. thank you for keeping on top of that. thanks, dan uh- diablo man convicted of rape, is now set to be extradited back to

massachusetts. >> twin kit lee had been hiding in the east bay more than several years using a fake name. abc seven news reporter ryan curry spoke with police about the arrest for more than a decade. >> one man was tucked away in these hills, hiding, trying to avoid justice. >> it is kind of shocking, but the cops did their due diligence and found him, so it's good he's finally in jail. >> twin kit lee was convicted of rape back in 2007, in quincy, massachusetts. the victim worked at his family's restaurant, but she was still able to identify the masked man who broke into her house and raped her at knifepoint. in 2005. >> when we interviewed her, one of the things she had said was she couldn't tell any physical description or anything, but she said he had really bad breath and she referenced, like my boss for his sentencing. >> lee fled the state. quincy police chief mark kennedy says a tip led them to diablo, where lee was living under a fake name. after almost 17 years on the run, they found him on tuesday. >> this is incredible special to

be getting this, this, this guy off the streets. >> kennedy says the us marshals were observing him for a while, monitoring his daily practices and during a traffic stop earlier this week, they were able to arrest him. he had a pretty regular routine, so they came up with a plan out there that, that they were going to basically affect a motor vehicle, stop and take him into custody. his neighbors were caught off guard. >> he was actually apprehended very close to where i live. and so the thought that somebody had been living there for a very long time, it's pretty scary. >> laura markstein said she didn't know lee, but she is happy he is not her neighbor anymore. >> we don't have that type of things happening in the area, but just certainly glad that he's caught. he was apprehended. sorry that it took so long, but hopefully they'll hold him accountable. and, you know, the victim will feel some justice. i hope so. >> lee is now soon to be extradited back to massachusetts, where he's expected to be sentenced in the

seabirds were found starving beginning in late april, up and down the california coast. >> abc7 news reporter cornell bernard went to sausalito today, where several of the pelicans returned home healthy. >> vets are giving a final checkup to this brown pelican, which came to the international bird rescue in fairfield last month, starving and barely

alive. today, this bird and others have been rehabbed back to health thanks to a diet of smelt and mackerel. that's why we do what we do to see these birds get back out into the wild, to, you know, be there to create a new generation, to keep these, you know, species that are iconic around fitted with this blue band to track their progress in the wild. eight pelicans are loaded into carriers by the center staff and driven 50 miles to sausalito. we were there for the big moment when the seabirds stepped out and took flight, returning to their home on the bay. while it's good news, there's about 160 pelicans back at the rescue center not doing as well. their rehab will take time. emaciated pelicans are still arriving here, but in far fewer numbers compared to several weeks ago when we visited. it's still unclear what's causing the crisis, but experts believe el nino weather conditions possibly made it harder for pelicans to find fish. >> stormy weather can create some dynamics in the ocean that makes hunting really

challenging. some thoughts about where the fish are. maybe they are deeper or not in the same location. >> the california department of fish and wildlife said it's our feeling, but nothing proven, that pelicans were simply unable to reach the fish they normally would because of those ocean conditions. today, there's encouraging signs pelicans are hunting again near the golden gate. >> just a few days ago, about 250 pelicans were seen just on the other side, feeding and doing normal pelican things. >> it's moments like these which make caring for these iconic california brown pelicans totally worth it. >> it is the magic moment. honestly, you spend a lot of time watching every single bird, checking its abrasions, making sure it's eating blood values are good. to return them to the wild is really absolutely magical in sausalito. >> cornell, bernard abc seven news. >> so nice to see them on the mend. well, coming up, a popular east bay market is nowestroyed after an early morni

in the east bay. the fire started at about 2:00 this morning at the lake chabot public market in castro valley. heavy flames caused the roof to collapse. the market is home to several different food vendors. drone view seven shows the aftermath of the fire. terrible destruction. the roof of the business just completely gutted as you can see the inside, well, that's a total loss. >> i'm shocked right now. i don't even know what to say. everybody's like, come here, grab a drink, grab some food for work. i don't know, it feels like so inconvenient for everybody right now. >> nearby shippo elementary. chabot elementary had to close today because of smoky conditions caused by the fire and the road closures. they're planning to be back tomorrow for the last day of school. >> a new civil grand jury report

is critical of san francisco's efforts to curb the use of illegal fireworks, the report says. san francisco has little to no coordination among city departments to prevent the use of illegal fireworks. last year, six people were treated for injuries related to their use. around july fourth, the civil grand jury recommends san francisco create an illegal fireworks workgroup within the department of emergency management. >> okay, weekend is almost here. weather is nice. a good bit warmer today. >> that's right. let's get to abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. sandhya? yeah. ama and dan. you can definitely feel the warmth out there. some 90s in our inland areas. let me show you those temperatures. we are now hitting our peak in places like livermore, concord, brentwood, 90 degrees. it is 70. in oakland, 67, san francisco 85. in san jose. look at this. 87 degrees in calistoga, 92 degrees in fairfield. fairfield. you've already hit 93 degrees. a lot of sun out there, a few high, thin, wispy clouds in our tower, on our tower, cameras, as you can see right now, just

harmless. passing through the bay area, high pressure controlling our weather brought us the warmth today we're going to hang on to it for some areas tomorrow as we look at a live view from our golden gate bridge camera. just bright skies tomorrow, another warm day inland weekend weather will be breezy and cooler and the middle of next week. summerlike sizzle is coming! we're going to be talking about triple digits, but not tomorrow. you're okay for santa clara high school's graduation tomorrow at 4:00. it's going to be 80 degrees. so pretty warm. and then eventually dropping down, but bright skies expected. also graduating tomorrow. amador valley high school, amador valley high school in pleasanton, 7:00 in the evening. it's going to be mild, 70 degrees dropping off into the 60s. eventually and as we speak of the temperature drop 6:00 tonight, it's still going to be pretty warm inland in the 80s, 50s coast side. we will notice that the temperatures remain in the comfortable, comfortable zone. and then tomorrow morning only patchy fog right near the coastline

starting off in the 50s and 60s as we head into the afternoon once again, we will see a couple of low 90s popping up in our warmest locations. so first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the 50s and 60s. i think you can leave your jacket behind. as you will notice, it will rapidly warm up into the 90s. inland antioch up to 90 degrees 59 in half moon bay. so that's where you may need that extra layer 66 in the city, 73 in oakland, 86 in san jose and santa rosa, 82 degrees in san rafael. these temperatures coming down around the coast and bay, but not inland. now we're going to fast forward to next week. as you will notice, temperatures are just going to come right back up again into the 90s. and by wednesday we're talking triple digits. this could be the hottest weather of the season. so far. if this pans out. and then we'll continue with the heat on thursday, although not quite as hot. so here's a look at the accuweather seven day forecast. we'll hold on to the 90s tomorrow. coast cools as we head into a new month. we're

going to turn down the heat mid 80s inland 50s coast side. foggy start on monday and then turning up the heat on tuesday, wednesday and thursday. it's definitely going to feel like the sizzle has arrived a little early. dan ummah looking at those triple digits. yeah there we go. yeah. >> game on right. yeah. all right a celebration to mark the reopening of the capitola wharf is being postponed. the wharf was closed last year after a storm damaged it. a work to repair the deck, rail and pilings is set to be finished in june. but other items like benches, trash cans and artwork won't be installed in time for the august celebration. while the wharf may reopen in august, the grand reopening event itself will not happen until sometime in september. we'll keep tabs on
