while this defendant may be unlike any other in american history, a historic day as donald trump becomes the first president to be convicted of a crime, we arrived at this trial and ultimately today, this verdict, in the same manner as every other case that comes through the courtroom doors. >> a jury finding him guilty on
1:10 am
all 34 counts, tied to a hush money payment made to adult film star stormy daniels in 2016. trump remained defiant as he left the courtroom. >> now a felon, this was a rigged, disgraceful trial. >> the question what happens next is a big one. will the former president spend time in prison, and how will his conviction impact the november election? >> there's nothing in the united states constitution that prohibits him from holding public office. he can still be elected president >> and good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. former president trump continues to claim he is a quote, very innocent man. he attended a campaign fundraiser tonight on new york's upper east side. and tomorrow he plans to hold a news conference at trump tower at 8 a.m. our time. >> the new york jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. the verdict came after
1:11 am
about ten hours of deliberations. cameras were not allowed inside the courtroom, but sketches show former president trump closing his eyes as the verdict was read, with the jury looking on. a short time later, he addressed people outside the courthouse. trump also the gop's presumptive presidential nominee, immediately turned his attention to the election. this was a disgrace. >> this was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt. >> the real verdict is going to be november 5th by the people, and they know what happened here , and everybody knows what happened here. >> meantime, manhattan's district attorney alvin bragg thanked the jury, saying despite trump's criticism, he did his job. >> we arrived at this trial and ultimately today at this verdict in the same manner as every other case that comes through the courtroom doors, by following the facts and the law and doing so without fear or
1:12 am
favor. >> former president trump is scheduled to be sentenced july 11th, and there are many questions tonight on what kind of impact today's verdict will have on trump's run for president. >> i mean, this is the first time a us president has been convicted of criminal charges, he said. >> it is historic, and abc seven news reporter j.r stone spoke with some experts tonight. j.r what's their take on all of this. >> well dan umma it seems that today's verdict actually strengthened both political sides. if you can believe that. meaning that if you didn't like trump before you really don't like him now. and if you like trump before you stand with him now when his back against the wall, the question in the upcoming election is about those in the middle. former president donald trump not shying away from cameras even after he was found guilty on 34 counts. the question from some will he be given jail time when he is sentenced on july 11th? >> it's going to be probation, i guarantee you he's a first time offender, just like you or me would be. he's a nonviolent offender that's constitutional
1:13 am
law. >> professor rory little of uc law, sf this is not a crime of a century uh- this is this is treated as a misdemeanor. >> other than the fact that it was done to influence an election, which makes it a felony. but this is still the first time a former us president has been convicted on felony charges. >> trump even sounding off about it afterwards. >> i think he was also, you know, saw it as an opportunity to campaign, you know, tell the story of him being the victim of the establishment and that just like his supporters feel like they're victims, that they need to, you know, put their faith in him, that he's being attacked just like they're being attacked. and he will protect them. there have been several voter polls about how this conviction could impact the election, but stanford's john krosnick has concerns about those. >> we have 100 years of research in psychology showing that people cannot guess how information influences them. and in fact, even after they've been influenced, people are not good
1:14 am
at describing how information has influenced them. so what matters is watching polls that will be done in the coming days and weeks to see whose voting intentions are changed. >> on one side of things, trump's winred campaign donation site went down after thursday's verdict. his reps saying the site was overloaded with those wanting to donate to the campaign. >> this trial has already made mr. trump more popular. >> on the other side, president biden's campaign saying a second trump term means chaos. the big question, though, is on how independent voters will look at this conviction. >> listen, i believe that if those independent voters listen to that evidence, my prediction is they are most likely to be pushed in a direction away from former president trump. >> this could be a really big gift for a biden campaign that's been struggling in a lot of ways . >> so all the scholars out there say that trump will likely get probation, not jail time, first time offense and his age, but it
1:15 am
technically would be possible. dan and ama trump sentencing is just four days before the republican national convention to which, of course, his supporters are criticizing the timing of that sentencing date. >> is there a belief that republicans would switch the nominee? >> that's when you start hearing the experts. the scholars say, well, we haven't seen something like that. and then you get into what ifs. one thing is fairly certain a trump appeal would likely keep him free before the election. but again, this is all what ifs and what ifs. and then there's the question of who would be the nominee if they pulled him, if there was some sort of jail sentence. a lot of big questions, unchartered waters. >> we've never been here before. exactly. thanks jared, very much. >> thanks. well, jurors in this case deliberated for more than nine hours before reaching a verdict. the former president still faces three more criminal cases. there's a federal case in florida over classified documents he's accused of taking . he is one of several defendants facing charges in georgia over the attempt to
1:16 am
overturn the 2020 election. and in washington, dc, he faces federal charges also tied to the 2020 election. at this time, none of the cases appear headed to trial before the election, and we have been on this story since this afternoon. and you can find live streaming and continuing coverage on the abc seven bay area app. download it and watch wherever you stream. >> all right, let's turn for a few moments to the weather, because it is beginning to feel a little bit like summer around the bay area. >> so it is. meteorologist sandhya patel joins us now with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya. yeah. >> and dan, it's going to feel like summer again tomorrow. let me show you $1 million view from our mount tam cam city by the bay is just sparkling tonight, but visibility is down to four miles in half moon bay where there is some fog. and tomorrow morning, as we look at your day planner, there will be some patchy fog around 50s and 60s. the sun's out, the temperatures are rising. inland areas will feel like summer again with 90s along the coast in the upper
