of hope. good evening. >> i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. an iconic part of san francisco is making a comeback. a year after the century old company shut down. >> yeah, we're talking about anchor brewing. so who's coming to the rescue? the billionaire founder and ceo of chobani yogurt, right. >> might seem like an odd combination at first, but give us just a couple of minutes to make it make sense. let's start our team coverage with abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn. suzanne. >> so, dan, i talked to a former employee and several beer writers today. they all have high hopes that the new owner will embrace the company's long history and maintain a firm commitment to the community. >> when i heard the news this morning, i started tearing up like dahlstrom is really excited for this next chapter for anchor brewing, she used to supervise anchor's taproom and help create its workers union. i have always known that anchor steam was a phoenix. it's died and been resurrected many times. >> the ceo and founder of chobani yogurt, hamdi ulukaya, is taking over anchor brewing.

>> he explained why on instagram that i like to be part of bringing this company. anchor beer, this dream back to life. it's the essence of san francisco. it's the essence of this country that we can always bring it back stronger, better than ever before. >> that love and appreciation of san francisco and its iconic brewery is something dahlstrom cherishes. >> it's not just a beer company, it's a culture. and it sounds like he is willing to really embrace that. >> ulukaya was raised in a dairy farming family in a small village in eastern turkey. >> according to what we know now, eastern turkey is where beer originated about 12,000 years ago. >> randy mosher has written several books about beer that have become an industry standard. he says anchor's ownership transition comes during a tough time for the industry. >> the younger generation is drinking less, drinking less beer, drinking more. other things besides beer. >> mosher says. it will take a lot for anchor brewing to succeed, and it's going to be a

difficult challenge. >> but clearly that, you know, that guy has the marketing chops and, and, created a huge brand out of nothing. >> beer writer gail ann williams is optimistic about the resurgence of anchor brewing. >> it's an interesting company because it has been rescued before when fritz maytag came in and famously bought the company out of just what looked like sheer, demise, he restored it so it certainly could happen again. >> dahlstrom has high hopes for what ulukaya can do for anchor brewing. >> i have hope that he will follow through with those words and really embrace the community , the beer community, the neighborhood of san francisco and former employee blake dahlstrom is really glad to know that ulukaya plans to bring back the old labels she says it will preserve what anchor brewing is currently, and dahlstrom also says she has a better idea of ulukaya. >> s vision for anchor's future.

back to you. >> really interesting what's happened here, suzanne. thank you. now, what does this really mean for san francisco abc7 news reporter cornell bernard continues our team coverage with that part of the story. >> yeah, city leaders are calling this a very big deal for san francisco. anchor brewing set to reopen the taproom, including the factory here on dejaras street. a billionaire stepping up to make that investment. >> the beer is just excellent, and i'm glad it's coming back. >> anchor brewing, home of anchor steam beer, could soon be back on tap. >> i think that's great. it's the oldest craft beer, so in the united states and you know, craft beer is big right now. and i think san francisco needs it. >> since 1896, anchor was a san francisco original until its former owner, sapporo brewing, decided to close last july. >> can't wait to get back to work on my part with anchor brewery. >> hamdi ulukaya, billionaire founder and ceo of chobani yogurt, making it official on instagram. he's branching out into the beer business as

anchors new owner. >> let's do this. >> the news that anchors brewery and taproom will reopen on deharo street is an economic godsend to san francisco. supervisor shaman walton is already sporting his anchor brewing swag. >> this is big for san francisco as a whole. as you know, we've had a lot of businesses shut down anchor steam being one of them, so it's exciting for the city. it's extremely exciting for district ten mayor london breed posting on x this is not just an investment in san francisco. >> it's a recognition of what makes our city truly special our history, our institutions and our people. anchor brewing has always been a beloved part of san francisco, and thanks to hamdi ulukaya, it will be a part of san francisco for years to come. >> i'm. i'm bummed we didn't get it. >> of course, mike walsh and his investment partners made a bid for anchor despite losing out. he's encouraged about new ownership. >> pretty consistently said that my objective is to drink good beer, drink steam, and for it to be made in san francisco, and for the employees who want to

continue to work there, to work there. so, you know, it sounds like it's probably in good hands with hamdi, so that makes me happy. >> i'm told by ulukaya team, the billionaire is interested in rehiring former employees at this facility. it could take months to get the doors open once again in san francisco. cornell, bernard. abc seven news. >> now at abc seven, we focus on building a better bay area because we believe in improving that this this place that we all call our home and care so much about. go to see our stories online at abc seven news.com/better bay area pro-palestinian demonstrators who had been camping out at uc santa cruz for a month, were cleared out by law enforcement this afternoon, but not for long. >> situation intensified last night when police started dismantling the encampment. at one point, students wearing bicycle helmets and construction hats tussled with officers in riot gear. san francisco police and chp officers helped clear the encampment. some students say they were injured in the

confrontation. >> they started getting violent and aggressive even more than they were before, and they started brutalizing students. >> more than 80 demonstrators were arrested for failing to clear the area, including several uc santa cruz faculty members. after police left, students started setting up a new encampment. >> new developments today in the murder of a man whose body was found by his wife outside a pleasant hill park this year, three people are now in custody and charged with his death. 37 year old santiago jacobo was stabbed and killed after his custodial shift at the park in february. police say jacobo and the suspects, two women and a man, all knew each other. they say he was in a relationship with one of those women and that she was being ramone, romantically pursued by the male suspect. police say evidence indicates they all worked together at an assisted living facility, and that the attack on jacobo was coordinated. notorious killer richard allen davis will not get his death

penalty conviction overturned this morning. a santa clara county judge denied a motion to overturn the sentence davis got for killing 12 year old polly klaas back in 1993. attorneys for davis argued the death penalty conviction should be recalled because of california's moratorium on executions. polly's father, marc klaas, says the family will only get closure when davis is put to death. remember to check out our streaming documentary, struck by justice the impact of polly klaas on our abc seven news streaming app. it's about the tough on crime laws that followed the murder of polly klaas. >> tonight, the basketball world is remembering a former nba player who got his start in the bay area. former 70 sixers player in san jose native drew gordon died yesterday in a car accident. police near portland, oregon, say gordon was driving a three wheeled vehicle when he hit a pickup truck. gordon died at the crash scene. the 33 year old graduated from archbishop mitty high school in san jose. his high school coach remembers

gordon's character on and off the court. >> i don't think people realize how selfless he was. he didn't care how many points he scored. he cared that he was a major factor in the game and that we won. >> gordon went on to play for ucla and the university of new mexico before going pro for the 76 ers. his brother aaron gordon is still playing for the denver nuggets. drew gordon is survived by his wife and three young children. >> well it is the first week of summer break for oakland unified students. and for some children a school lunch is the only meal they get during the day. so what happens during the summer? abc seven news reporter lena howland looks at how oakland is helping make sure that no child goes hungry. >> it's the first week of summer break for students in oakland. >> any child within the community is welcome to show up and receive a meal starting this week. >> more than 50 sites for the city's summer food service program have opened at places where kids are already spending their summers. this includes

churches, summer camps, rec centers and community centers across the area. program manager michael okonji says this comes at a time when 35,000 kids already rely on free or reduced lunches in oakland alone during the school year, i witnessed it up close. >> i've seen the several food deserts and the lack of accessibility to fresh nutrition. >> that's why their goal is to serve more than 120,000 meals over the next few months. >> that hot lunch is what families depend on during the school year. because of the, you know, what's going on, the inflation, prices are going up. it's hard to pay bills now. >> daniella spends her weekdays racing between at least a dozen sites a day to make sure no child goes hungry. >> they cannot function without food and i'm going to do all that i can and the rest of my team, all that we can to help provide these meals for these

kids and these meals already come individually wrapped so students can grab and go or eat right here on site. >> we try to make the food, tasty and culturally accessible. so it's not just a chance for them to meet their nutritional requirements, but for them to, like, learn about new cultures or try new foods or expand their palates. >> the oakland unified school district has a summer food service program available on school sites, too. the only difference is these meals are supplemented by the city's sugar sweetened beverage tax that was passed by voters in 2016 by as much as $2 per meal, for the lunches. so this, ensures a guarantee is larger and more nutritious portions. >> the program wraps up the second week of august, when kids head back to school in oakland. lena howland, abc seven news. >> taking the stand today, paul pelosi himself testified against the man who broke into his home and attacked him with a hammer. highlights from the courtroom, including the inflatable unicorn costume, are next. i'm

her testimony about interviewing depape at the hospital. at one point, she was holding in her hands the hammer to pap allegedly used on pelosi, which she called a sledge hammer. she also described the contents of his backpack, which included a laptop and inflatable unicorn costume. depape said in his federal trial that he had planned to wear that costume while interrogating then speaker of the hse ncy pelosi. but she wasn't home the night of the break in. in his testimony today , paul pelosi described waking up in the middle of the night startled, scared and groggy. paul pelosi on the stand, describing the moments inside his home a little after 2 a.m. when his bedroom door burst open and he was greeted by a large man with a hammer and zip ties. pelosi says david depape woke him with a question are you paul pelosi? it's those four words that began a middle of the night conversation with depape, looking for paul's wife, then speaker of the house nancy pelosi, and paul trying to explain she wasn't there. i'm going to have to tie you up.

we'll wait, pelosi testified to pap said before saying she's second in line for president and we're going to have to take them all out. pelosi described attempts to get away from depape , including walking to an elevator just outside his bedroom, which had a phone in it he wanted to use to call 911. depape followed close behind. he said. ultimately, pelosi described going to the bathroom, where he was able to get his cell phone and call 911 on speaker. being mindful to say, just enough to the 911 call operator to elicit help but not too much to tip his hand to depape. he seemed very intent on what he was going to do, testified pelosi. pelosi eventually convinced depape they should go downstairs to get to pap's belongings, and that depape could tie him up down there so they could sleep. i was trying to negotiate something, testified pelosi. when police arrived, pelosi opened the door. pelosi said when depape wouldn't drop the hammer hand on the hammer and doesn't

remember what happened after he was hit. in describing the lingering effects, the attack has had on his health, pelosi said he's had two falls since the incident. also that it's better for his mental health not to talk about what happened following pelosi's testimony, a forensic expert took the stand. jurors have been intently listening, and with each witness, the judge has given them the option of submitting a question to be asked today. the jurors had no additional questions for pelosi. >> interesting. okay. all right. thank you mel. >> well, a snapshot of history today as this morning's headlines capture the unprecedented conviction of a former president donald trump found guilty on 34 felony counts, is promising to appeal. tonight. here in the bay area, pro-trump protesters hung upside down american flags on an overpass in lafayette. the inverted flags have become a symbol for the movement, falsely claiming the 2020 election was stolen by 1:00. the flags over highway 24 were gone. trump continued his claims of an unfair trial today in a speech

packed with attacks on prosecutors and the judge. >> this is a scam. this is a rigged trial. it shouldn't have been in that venue. we shouldn't have had that judge. >> president biden addressed the conviction as part of a speech on israel. biden says the conviction shows that no one is above the law and is criticizing trump and others, claiming the verdict was rigged. >> it's reckless, it's dangerous, it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don't like the verdict. >> the big question, of course, is how much the conviction will affect trump's chances of winning the presidency a second time. today on our 3 p.m. program, getting answers, a pollster serving democratic candidates told us polling in the next several weeks will give us a better picture of where he stands in all the polling we've seen, you know, democrats are much more likely to agree with the fact that charges were brought to view him as being guilty, and republicans generally have been the opposite . paul mitchell of political

in fairfield, but 59.5 moon bay, a good 36 degree difference between inland area and coast. our summer microclimates at full play. most areas are dropping off right now by 11 degrees in santa rosa, six degrees cooler in the city, down seven, oakland down five, livermore and san jose. onshore winds are ramping up. that's playing apart. gusts to 35 right now in oakland. do expect that pattern to continue. so if you have evening plans tonight the sun's out 7:00. you're still pretty nice inland in the mid 80s dropping to the 70s and eventually to the 60s around the bay in the low 60s, a little breezy and then a few patches of clouds developing late tonight going into tomorrow morning along the coastline. we already have some patchy fog. we're seeing it now 56 degrees coming down to the low 50s. so you need a jacket if you're going to be along the coast. pretty potent storm pushing towards the pacific northwest with an atmospheric river. that's a strong atmospheric river. it's bringing the potential for some flooding concerns across the pacific northwest. what it's doing for

us is it's deepening that marine layer. that marine layer is already starting to deepen. we're seeing the fog along the coast that's patchy, but it will continue to spread northward and we will see more areas going under gray skies. excessive heat watch is going to start tuesday morning and it's going to run until thursday evening. the reason for this is the temperatures are going to soar. and this is a solano and lake counties. they're going to soar well above average into increasing the risk of heat illnesses significantly. so something to keep in mind, especially if you're sensitive to the heat. right now. you don't have to worry about the heat from our san rafael camera. just nice blue skies right now. low 60s san francisco, oakland. you're at 79 in san jose and 85 degrees in half moon bay. as we look at the view from sutro tower, it's a little breezy, but blue skies. 74 in santa rosa, 66 petaluma. you're in the 80s. fairfield. concord, livermore and sun shining in san jose overnight tonight. areas of fog and drizzle tomorrow. breezy to gusty and cooler and the middle

of next week. summer sizzle is coming so get ready tonight. those temperatures will be slow to fall, but i'm going to show you what's going to happen tomorrow. you start out with some fog and then numbers don't rise quite as rapidly. you're looking at 70s and 80s inland, 50s coast side. so a pretty nice looking weather. the wind will be an issue. windy along the coast, breezy inland. the winds will continue to ramp up tomorrow evening, so keep that in mind. your morning temperatures anywhere from the 40s to the 50s tomorrow afternoon in the south bay. it's going to be a nice day. 77 in san jose. not quite as warm on the peninsula. 71. redwood city 59, in pacifica, with lingering fog. 65 in the city, north bay numbers mid 80s from sonoma to santa rosa in the east bay, closer to average 70. in oakland, 72 fremont had inland, 84 in fairfield, 78. in livermore, accuweather seven day forecast temperatures will be about the same sunday and then coming down on monday. after that, we bring in some hot

weather from the mid 90s to the low one hundreds. by the middle of the week, so it's going to be pretty hot. >> that'll get our attention. yes, it will absolutely. >> thanks, sandy. all right. well thousands of mexican nationals living in the bay area are expected to vote this weekend in what is expected to be a historic election for president of that country. the top two leading candidates are both women, which virtually guarantees mexico will have its first woman president. leading the pack is claudia sheinbaum. the former mexico city mayor has bay area ties. she worked on her phd at lawrence berkeley national lab. her main opponent is conservative, so she'll galvez. mexicans in the bay area can vote sunday at the san francisco and san jose consulates. >> one call, one click. >> how it's going to get easier to get transit services

dow fell nearly 1000 points in three days, but the blue chip index managed to regain some of those losses in the final trading day of the month. in fact, the dow posted its best day so far this year with a pickup of 575 points. the nasdaq was essentially flat. the s&p gained 42. may is the sixth winning month out of the past seven for all major indices. costco's new chief financial officer has a reassuring message for customers. he says don't

worry about the dollar 50 hot dog soda combo. the price is not going up. gary millerchip made the announcement on an earnings call with analysts. with costco's leadership change, some had speculated the combo price might increase. it's remained the same since 1985. relief to many costco shoppers. >> all right, helping to build a better bay area. new federal funding will be used to help streamline public transportation in contra costa county. transit officials say it could boost ridership and have a huge impact on the county's fastest growing population. that's aging seniors. the goal is to help people plan their routes better, even if they use multiple transit methods, including paratransit. i had to take different transit systems to get there, and as a consequence, going was slow enough. >> but coming back, it took me four hours. >> the contra costa transit

hides the beast that is city bureaucracy. building a better bay area means balancing the two as san francisco tries to keep its streets clean. >> abc seven news reporter lyanne melendez is here for some trash talk about the city's trash cans. >> truth be told, is what i say. dan, now late last year, we learned through a report that it takes longer and costs more to build homes in san francisco than anywhere else in california. homes aren't the

only thing we're slow at. sure, you can blame it on the pandemic, but does it take several years to cover the city with trash cans? apparently so. for a major city, san francisco has a fairly good number of trash cans. but we have a problem. trash tends to find its way onto city streets, tarnishing san francisco's image even further. like right here they cleaned today, and two minutes later, somebody will trash it. it's been found that the more people litter, the more it becomes a habit. they're desensitized. why can't we just have a nice can out in san francisco, a nice wire basket like they have in some other cities? >> we tried that in our pilot program and we saw that it didn't work. we're slobs. i don't know if it's slobs. it's really it's behavior issues. >> the city then realized that they needed some kind of human resistant trash can without compromising esthetics. but this is san francisco, so it has to be different, right? they settled on a sleek new design

that was two years ago. here's part of the reason for the delay . rather than pick any design, public works decided to go the democratic route, asking residents to select a favorite from a few prototypes. those special trash cans became yet another city pilot program, costing $550,000. that's a lot of money. $550,000. >> yeah, it's a lot. it's a lot of money. the garbage cans, certainly, once they're into full mass production, aren't going to cost that much. we're hoping they'll cost about $3,000. >> this is the model that could cost $3,000, called slim silhouette. there's one along the embarcadero across from the ferry building. as seen in this photo. one was placed in the tenderloin, but that's now gone. the sexy new cans are supposed to be graffiti resistant and hard to tamper with, and we've noticed that it's been tampered with. >> it looked cute, pretty. that's it. you went from

spaceship to come back and get it. >> public works says there will be some design changes and improvements made, like being able to fit a used pizza box. right now, the opening isn't large enough. they also want to make sure that people can't get into the recycling portion, so that this kind of rummaging doesn't happen. i'm sounding sort of like my mom, what happened? what's wrong with the old ones? >> okay, so the problem with the old cans is we see we get a lot of problems with people being able to go into the cans, rummage through them and pull the garbage out. we want to have it so people just can't pull off the doors and smash the locks as easily as they do now. and finally, we want to have something that's a little bit esthetically pleasing. >> mind you, public works has yet to find a company that will mass produce them, so at the earliest the cans will start to roll out by the summer of 2025. the city wants to purchase 3000 trash cans, so do the math.

that's $9 million. to clarify, ratepayer funding previously collected by recology has already been set aside by public works to cover the costs of the cans. board president aaron peskin, who is running against the incumbent mayor, has been critical of the costs and delays. >> i expressed these concerns years ago. i said that we just needed an off the shelf product. they wanted to have something special regardless of cost. we still don't have the cans right now. >> public works has a more immediate problem, like how to quickly replace the 15 big belly smart trash cans like this one removed overnight from the north beach neighborhood. after the north beach citizens, the local nonprofit, terminated their contract with the company that provided them big belly. >> big belly has fallen down on the job. they're not servicing the cans well, they're not taking care of them. they're not maintaining them. >> a dark mark left on the pavement is proof they were once here. the office of economic and

workforce development expressed its disappointment with big belly, stating that such action would require a lot of coordination on the city side. for now, it appears there will be no cans for the upcoming north beach festival. attendees could carry their trash home, but of course there is always the street. well let's hope not. tomorrow is the sf fest italiana and the north beach street fair is from june 15th through the 16th. now we reached out to big belly several days ago and they never responded. and as we say, you can't make this stuff up. no you can't. >> i mean it seemingly simple. i know it's more complicated. you can't just put up any trash can, but cities all over the bay area have. i'd love to see an experiment where they just tried on a block, just different trash cans over a period of a few weeks. that's right. just try what others like in washington dc. >> it really works. the mesh and they people are pretty, you

know, clean there and so forth. well, it didn't work here. yeah. so unfortunately it's a thing of habit. i guess. >> thanks, liane. sure. >> well june will kick off tomorrow in san francisco to the beat of electronic music workers spent the day setting up a stage at san francisco's civic center plaza for saturday's huge rave. 25,000 fans are expected for the electronic music concert by british artist fred again and dj skrillex. the show is being put on by the promoter of outside lands. >> pride month starts tomorrow in san francisco with a new purple pride block party. the party goes from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on market street, with activities set up along waller street as well, and oakland kicked off pride month a day early, with mayor shengtao raising a huge lgbt lgbtq flag at city hall. the town has a new reason to celebrate, too. this is the first pride month in which oakland has an lgbtq cultural district. it was approved back in november. it's in the lakeshore area, where bars catering to oakland's gay

impact climate change will have on our environment and you don't have to look further than our coastline to see the damage more intense storms and warming ocean temperatures are causing what can be done to shore up our coast. >> not much, experts say. >> california has 1100 miles of coast. the whole coastline is pretty much eroding. there's absolutely nothing we can do over the long run. the whole backed up pacific ocean. we don't battle with mother nature and when we're up against forces

that are certainly more powerful than we are along west cliff drive here. waves and tides beat the hell out of this coast. took out the road and the bike path. we lost 20 or 30ft in one day. and i've been here 55 years. i've never seen anything like this happen before. >> approximately. i lived there 45 years. we would lose a half an inch of foot at the most every couple of years until around 2010. big chunks of earth would fall into the ocean. at the shortest point. we're ten feet from the ocean. >> we built those houses without any regard for coastal erosion. >> it was the war. the waves and the wind. the cost of saving building was so astronomical. so to raise 10 million would be

almost an impossible task. nature takes the toll >> erosion is always a balance between the strength of the materials. the rock of its granite or sandstone, and the forces acting on it. so whether it's rainfall or whether it's waves, whether we're cutting a slope too steep, once we exceed the strength of the materials, it's going to fail. and it could be a river runoff, it could be a wave attack. it could be glaciers. so it's basically sort of the external forces dominating over the strength of the material. and the long term sea level is rising. we're going to have at least another foot of sea level rise, maybe more, by 2050. so the higher the ocean is , the more frequently the waves will attack the cliffs or the bluffs here. pacifica, santa barbara, where we get usually really high tides and large waves. that's when most of the

erosion takes place and the higher the sea level gets, the more erosion and the faster the erosion will occur. accelerating. how much faster it goes up. we don't know the other. that's going to be more problematic. up to 2050 and probably beyond, what we could call short term extreme events. a hurricane, a typhoon, a tsunami. those are going to get us in the short term with global warming. >> obviously, the sea is warmed up. the warmer it is, the more energy. and so you have stronger events, stronger storm events than you had in the past, maybe more frequent to through episodic events. >> we lose it all at once. and that's what happened here in january. so really high tides, seven feet plus offshore wave gauge showed waves 28ft high. those happened exactly at the

be a giant for like ten minutes a couple of years ago. or maybe not. aaron judge will play tonight for the very first time at oracle park, as the giants host the first place yankees in a weekend series. judge was injured the last time the bronx bombers came to town in 2019. but with a new scheduling format. the yankees are going to be here every other year from now on, so the yankees got off to a slow start this season. of course, the new york media was going bananas. what's wrong with this team? uh- now the judge is on a hot streak. 12 homers just in the month of may. tied for the league lead. total 18 so far. he's just the second yankee. get this with at least 12 homers and 12 doubles in a month. the other was lou gehrig in 1930. pretty good company as he comes home. >> it doesn't matter how you start. you're always going to have good months, bad months. just try to stay consistent and you know it's all going to work itself out. so it's, it's been a good month with a lot of wins. so happy about that. don't keep it rolling in june. >> i mean, the fact that we're in may and all the questions
