calabanga will not be opening next week as originally expected, but we know tonight the popular san jose water park, once known as raging waters, is going to be making a comeback in a big way. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez went to the park today to find out what was going on and got a surprise. >> yes, calabanga ceo came out to talk to her. they had a lengthy conversation, including details of how he plans to make a splash when the water park does reopen in june. >> here's a story you'll see only on abc seven news, just in time for summer raging waters,

now called calabanga, is just weeks away from opening in june. >> it's going to be a big surfboard, it says calabanga and, yeah, we're going crazy. >> steve dooner is the ceo of california dream and entertainment, which acquired the park for the past 90 days, crews have been repairing and revamping the 23 acre water park. >> this park. what's nice about it is it's big and the you're surrounded by all this nature. >> dunar has built a career creating theme parks for disney and universal studios, making improvements to this park hasn't been easy. >> you ever see the movie the money pit? this is it. >> the work behind the gates has included new food partnerships and installing three acres of turf. this is a high end, competitive, almost like a golf course grass. >> and underneath it we put a layer of what's called cooling sand. so every morning we spray the ■whole thing down. it retais the water. so when you walk on it, it's not hot. california dreamin entertainment and the city of san jose, which owns the

land, struck a deal earlier this year, with local hiring being key. >> cowabunga, san jose, they're hoping to fill 400 positions, and to date, they still need 250 more. >> but yeah, we need we need people. fast and furious council member domingo candelas said. >> the new operators are making a big investment. it's not little money, it's a it's a couple million dollars. he hopes with the new energy back to the park, it can bring new focus to the surrounding lake cunningham to be incorporating the marina and to see how we can potentially reimagine this park for, for decades to come, for the community to be able to enjoy, quite frankly, for dunar and his team, he said, the home stretch is the fun part. >> my wife has been here with me a couple of times. she walks through and she's like, you're not going to get done. i said, just watch. the magic happens overnight. seeing the people smile, you know, have everybody come through the gate all excited. that's the best part of this business in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> yeah, that is a great part of

it. well a visit to a water park might be on some to do list this weekend. >> abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> sandhya. yeah, and if you are going to be going, i just want to let you know dan and umma, that temperatures will be falling this weekend. >> take a look at the highs today. got up into the low to mid 90s inland. it was a hot one away from the coast. coast 59 in half moon bay, temperatures are falling 13 degrees cooler in livermore and concord right now compared to just 24 hours ago. you can pretty much see why fog is shrouding the golden gate bridge, and that's how you're going to start off the morning in some areas. fog and drizzle. temperatures in the 50s by noontime. sunny for most areas, gusty and cooler compared to today by 4:00 in the afternoon and we are looking at the return of fog at 7 p.m. now. temperatures are dialing back this weekend, but we are going to see a major warm up next week. i'll be back with those details coming right up. >> all right sandhya, thank you so much. pride month officially starts tomorrow, but symbols are

already on display in some of the bay area. city's events. this year could be part celebration, part call to action. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has a look at some of today's events. >> one flag at a time. communities across the bay area are kicking off pride month from sonoma county to oakland, so now we need to grow together and make it a international community so everybody can know and they can come here and be safe and feel like there is a place that they can call home. and in san francisco, a similar message this year's parade, grand marshals ushering in pride . >> the visibility for me, all the people that i grew up listening to, watch it on tv, they are part of the lgbtq community. that means a lot to me. it's about just being your authentic self and just be you and not think about anything else. >> it's embracing the fact that we can shine and also be a beacon of love. even in the darkest times. >> the theme this year is beacon

you watch abc seven and tomorrow. >> there's a big event in san francisco that's expected to bring about 25,000 people downtown. the stage is set at civic center plaza for an electronic music rave featuring djs skrillex and fred. again, skrillex has nine grammy awards, the most of any electronic music producer. he and fred again have collaborated on a number of songs. >> if there's one thing skrillex is known for, it's being very, very loud. you know, a lot of bass drops, a lot of like frenzy . it's going to be very, very high energy, and it's also a 3.5 hour show, which means there's plenty of time for lots of special guests. well the show is sold out. >> in fact, tickets sold out in less than an hour. after the rave was announced earlier this week, there was a major meat spill on 8-80 in oakland this evening. >> what were believed to be chicken and beef parts fell off of a truck. multiple vehicles spun out on site. caltrans temporarily closed all lanes so

crews could scoop the meat over toward the shoulder, caused significant delays. as you can imagine, for commuters around 6 p.m. on the southbound side and plenty of cars that pass through this mess will no doubt be needing a wash tomorrow. new developments today in the murder of a man whose body was found by his wife outside a pleasant hill park this year. three people are now in custody and charged with his death. 37 year old santiago jacob was stabbed and killed after his custodial shift at the park in february. police say jacobo and the suspects, two women and a man, all knew each other. they say he was in a relationship with one of those women, and that she was being romantically pursued by the male suspect. police say evidence indicates they all worked together at an assisted living facility, and that the attack on jacobo was coordinated. >> notorious killer richard allen davis will not get his death penalty conviction overturned this morning. a santa clara county judge denied a motion to overturn the sentence

that davis got for killing 12 year old polly klaas back in 1993. attorneys for davis argued the death penalty conviction should be recalled because of california's moratorium on executions. polly's father, marc klaas, says the family will only get closure when davis is put to death. and remember to check out our streaming documentary, struck by justice the impact of polly klaas on our abc seven news streaming app. it's about the tough on crime laws that followed the murder of polly klaas. paul pelosi faced his attacker today in a courtroom in san francisco. it is trial number two for david depape, now facing state charges over the assault at the pelosi home. the husband of speaker emerita nancy pelosi told the jury the lengths he went to get help that night. in october of 2022, paul pelosi explained how he got to a bathroom to call 911, then convinced depape to go downstairs where police could get to him faster. pelosi's

testimony came after sfpd lieutenant carla hurley spoke at one point holding the hammer used in the attack. she also described the contents of depapes backpack, including an inflatable unicorn costume. depape says he planned to wear during his interrogation of the house speaker. david depape has already been convicted on federal charges and sentenced to 30 years in prison. >> pro-palestinian demonstrators who had been camping out at uc santa cruz for a month were cleared out by law enforcement this afternoon, but not for long. university officials say the unlawful campers had a chance to voluntarily disband and did not. the situation intensified last night when police started dismantling the encampment. at one point, students wearing bicycle helmets and construction hats tussled with officers in riot gear. some students say they were injured in the confrontation. >> they started getting violent and aggressive even more than they were before, and they started brutalizing students.

>> more than 80 demonstrators were arrested for failing to clear the area, including several uc santa cruz faculty members. after police left, students started setting up a new encampment. new trouble for ticketmaster, the ticketing giant's parent company, says its data is for sale on the dark web. live nation told federal regulators today it found unauthorized activity in its systems last week, the company says a hacker put user data up for sale on monday. it's not clear what kind of information the hackers got a hold of or how many people may be impacted, the hack adds to a tense year for ticketmaster. just last week, california and dozens of other states sued the company, claiming it used its monopoly to hurt concert goers. >> a lot more to come on this busy friday. marin county is looking to build a better bay area by how it addresses homelessness. the important ruling, made this week by a court and the bay area founder of a humanitarian organization, is nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the world.

michelle obama's mom, mary ann robinson, has died at 86 years old. robinson moved with the first family into the white house when barack obama was elected president. she helped care for her granddaughters, malia and sasha, from the campaign trail through her son in law's second term, michelle obama announced her mother's death in a statement tonight, saying, quote, in our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. >> as expected, former president trump is vowing to appeal his conviction for falsifying

business records to cover up a payment made to adult film star stormy daniels. under new york law, any appeal of a verdict comes after sentencing and that process could take a year, maybe more. trump is scheduled to be sentenced on july 11th. in the meantime, he is expected to be in san francisco next week, raising money for his campaign. an invitation shows tech billionaire david sax and his wife are hosting a fundraiser next thursday. the fda shared initial thoughts today about using mdma to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. the agency will hold a public hearing and advisory vote on the topic on tuesday. they'll debate the safety and efficacy of the psychedelic. the fda urges the importance of having a plan and a safe place with professionals on site while patients are impaired. that is how it's been done in clinical trials, paired with traditional talk therapy over several sessions, the vote to authorize this treatment will happen in august. >> for more than 20 years, her

work has changed lives around the world. and now, a woman from the north bay is a nominee for the nobel peace prize. the international eurasia press fund announced heidi coon's nomination today. the san rafael resident is being recognized for roots of peace, a group that's helped remove landmines and replace them with orchards around the world. is thanking her family and friends in the bay area for supporting her work. all my friends in marin county, the greater san francisco bay area and around the world made this happen. kun's group has planted more than 7 million trees on reclaimed mine fields, helping war torn countries create jobs and food sources. her work has made a difference for people from guatemala, south africa, ukraine and afghanistan. the peace prize winner is announced in october. >> building a better bay area is our daily mission here at abc7, and tonight we're highlighting a breakthrough in one county's efforts to tackle homelessness. a federal judge is allowing

marin county to keep managing an encampment that stretched for a mile. at one point, the encampment runs along binford road, parallel to highway 101 north of novato. a marin county has a plan to eventually move all of the people living there into housing. in the meantime, the county is removing any belongings spilling out from the rvs. this week, people living in the encampment asked a judge to stop that practice. the judge rejected their request. the encampment has gone from 115 residents last summer to 90 people now, with plans to get them all housed within three years time. >> a breakthrough in oakland, where it's the first work of summer for students and the city has set out to ensure no child goes hungry. more than 50 locations for the summer food service program have opened at places where kids are already spending their summers. 35,000 kids rely on free or reduced lunches in oakland during the school year, so the city's goal is to serve more than 120,000 meals in the next few months. >> that hot lunch is what

families depend on during the school year. because of the you know, what's going on, the inflation, prices are going up. it's hard to pay bills now. >> these meals were supplemented by oakland's sugar sweetened beverage tax that was passed by voters in 2016. >> and our last breakthrough is a bay area institution, at least for beer lovers. and it's going to be back in business and pouring suds again. anchor brewing closed last year, as we reported at the time, after more than 100 years. but it's getting a new owner, abc7 news reporter cornell bernard, with what we know about the buyer, the city leaders are calling this a very big deal for san francisco. >> anchor brewing set to reopen the taproom, including the factory here on dejaras street. a billionaire stepping up to make that investment. >> the beer is just excellent and i'm glad it's coming back. >> anchor brewing, home of anchor steam beer, could soon be back on tap. i think that's

great. >> it's the oldest craft beer, so in the united states and you know, craft beer is big right now. and i think san francisco needs it. >> since 1896, anchor was a san francisco original until its former owner, sapporo brewing, decided to close last july. >> i can't wait to get back to work on my part with anchor brewery. >> hamdi ulukaya, billionaire founder and ceo of chobani yogurt, making it official on instagram. he's branching out into the beer business as anchors new owner. >> let's do this. >> the news that anchors brewery and taproom will reopen on deharo street is an economic godsend to san francisco. supervisor shaman walton is already sporting his anchor brewing swag. >> this is big for san francisco as a whole. as you know, we've had a lot of businesses shut down anchor steam being one of them, so it's exciting for the city. it's extremely exciting for district ten mayor london breed posting on x this is not just an investment in san francisco. >> it's a recognition of what makes our city truly special.

think you could get away with the pool weather, but it is going to be cooler. dan and umma, let me show you the live pictures from our tower cameras. they all pretty much tell the same story, which is the fog is back. it's a pretty murky view in emeryville from emeryville, as you can see, visibility right now. four miles in half moon bay, six miles in san carlos. so something you'll need to watch out for if you do have early morning plans. the marine layer is 2000ft deep. that is being enhanced by this system here with an atmospheric river that's heading into the pacific northwest. it is going to drench them, bringing them the potential for flooding rain for us, it's just going to drop our temperatures. right now, those numbers have dropped down to the 50s and the 60s. the winds have been gusty today and they continue to remain gusty around concord, 26 miles an hour. that is going to be the case as we head into tomorrow along the coast. we'll have the strongest winds 25 to 35 miles an hour. here's a live view from our emeryville camera looking at the port of oakland overnight

tonight. areas of fog and drizzle tomorrow. breezy to gusty and cooler and the middle of next week. we've got summerlike sizzle coming. let's talk about what's going to happen next week, particularly tuesday and wednesday. high pressure is going to build in and as it does, temperatures soaring into the upper 90s to low 100 seconds. that's why an excessive heat watch goes up for lake county and solano county from 11 a.m. tuesday until 8 p.m. thursday. dangerous heat will increase significantly. the risk of heat illnesses, so something to keep in mind if you're sensitive to the heat. and here's a look at it, a preview of it. most models are keeping the inland areas in the 90s, even though that one's hinting at a little bit higher on tuesday. by wednesday, all bets are off. we're talking triple digits inland, looking at the hourly forecast tomorrow morning, you don't have to worry about any triple digits this weekend. some fog around the bay and the coast. the fog will be around near parts of the coast while into the afternoon, and most other areas will see the sun. it's going to be a pretty

i want to be partaking in that. frog: there's the famous lombard hill in san francisco, but not a whole lot of people know about the equally as curvy and steeper hill that is vermont street in the potrero hill neighborhood. we're gonna charge down vermont street, windiest road in san francisco. it's gonna be great. i say just get as low to the ground as you can and have protective equipment on. man: there's a lot of wipeouts, yeah. you can see pile ups all the time, like mid-course, like people just running at hay bales. but that's also part of the fun. man 2: the greatest event in the bay area, if not the west coast, full of shenanigans. childlike wonderment. i'm gonna just try it. frog: the originator of bring your own big wheel was a man named jon brumit back in 2000. jayman: he found a big wheel and just decided, "hey, i'm gonna do this." and then other people are like, "yeah, let's do this again." and it just kind of kept going. still a well-known and yet still somewhat unknown and underground event. but there's people that come from around the world to be here to do this event. luis: i want to get out of the routine, like we are doing every day the same, the same. we need to do something different and to be with our community. ♪ ♪ i saw everyone dressed up and i was like, "hell, yes. this is my thing." this is what i'm here for. san franciscans love an excuse to wear a costume. i have actually known about it for years, and i just never-- i just wanted to come watch. and then i'm like, "no, i'm gonna do it." all free. just gotta sign up. it's only by donations. man: when you're lining up for the first time and everyone's just sitting there like, ready. as soon as they say go, everyone in the entire scene

just kind of goes down the mountain at the same time. man 2: you really wind back and forth and slam into the hay bales. it's just chaos and it's a lot of fun. we know the optimal racing line, but once you get pile ups in the middle, we're quite sure how that's gonna go. man: they just gotta hold on tight and just make it to the bottom. woman: as people race down the hills, there is so much that can go wrong with their big wheels. the bars will go wrong, the pedals are off, the seats fall out. there's a lot of carnage generally, that the organizers of bring your own big wheel have to deal with. i was thinking about how can we take this problem and offer a very good solution, which is joyfully upcycling all the carnage. it's a diy pit stop. we want to let everybody fix their own bikes and provide stuff for them to do the repairs. ♪ ♪ help mitigate the trash that ends up at the end of the day. keep some bikes on the road, keep people riding. jayman: you should absolutely come just to see the spectacle of it, just to get that laughter of it. keeping sf culture alive, that's my number one priority right now.
