on abc seven news too close to home, a neighbor describes the panic after a massive brush fire near livermore forces people from their homes. the latest from the fire lines. also, a man is arrested for driving into people at a farmers market in the east bay, then leaving the scene and a historic election in mexico. as people lining up to vote here in the bay area, we'll take a look at the largest election in the history of that country. abc seven news starts now. >> always live. abc seven news starts right now.

>> you are seeing the burn scar from the first major wildfire of the season, and it's proving to be a tough battle for fire crews. thanks for joining us. i'm j.r. stone. we start with developing news on that fire still burning right now. this is a live bird's eye view right now from sky seven that shows the path carved out by the flames. this fire started yesterday afternoon. flames destroyed at least one building right now, we are not seeing any active fire from this viewpoint. we have seen firefighters and p-g-and-e's crews on the scene throughout the day. here's the latest on the so-called corral fire. it has scorched 14,000 acres, nearly 29mi■!s. cal fire now saying it is 50% contained. some neighbors were evacuated, but moments ago we got word that evacuation orders would be reduced to warnings. two firefighters were injured. cal fire says they were taken to the hospital suffering from minor to moderate burns. to add to the

concern, the fire is burning near the lawrence livermore national lab site 300 and experimental test site of explosive materials. you see, the fire is right along i-5 80. abc seven news reporter. now bernard spent the day there and is live now with the latest on the brush fire. cornell rjr yeah. >> cal fire says its crews have gained the upper hand on this major fire. most neighborhoods now out of danger. sadly, this home here on bernard road here in west tracy was destroyed in the fire. luckilly folks living here, uh- survived the fire. firefighters say strong winds fueled this fire across thousands of acres, chasing a lot of people from their homes. >> it was very terrifying. fire. big, big, huge fire in front of our eyes. a very scary 24 hours for angie garcia. >> her family sharing this cell phone video of the corral fire, making a fast march toward her

tracy hills neighborhood saturday night, we packed our things as there was a warning that of evacuation. >> barely got any sleep. >> neighbor lakshmi says. she grabbed what she could and got out. >> when we started seeing the flames, we saw how catastrophic it was and the whole hills were burning. i think from my from my house we could actually see like a big line of fire. >> cal fire says fierce winds carried the grass fire from near the livermore national laboratory site 300 to the edge of the tracy city limits. >> this is the largest significant fire of the year for us as an agency, battalion chief josh silveira says. >> 400 firefighters from across the state helped stop the wildfire at interstate 580, just yards from homes. he says by sunday, the weather started to cooperate with calmer winds and cooler temperatures. >> last night we had a very different conditions. we had sustained winds in the high 30s, low 40s. >> this ranch home west of 580

was destroyed in the fire. cal fire says the residents living here got out safely. >> it was very scary to be out of town and not be able to here, be here and do anything. >> amanda mamani lives across the street. a portion of her front lawn shows how close the fire got before firefighters stopped it. >> we're so incredibly thankful. like beyond belief, seeing part of our grass right there burned is, like, scary enough. >> from sky seven. you can see how close the fire came to other homes in the area. just a matter of feet. residents sending a very big thank you to all firefighters. >> thank you to everybody who had worked hard and given us the home back. thank you so much. >> a two firefighters suffered minor to moderate burns while fighting this fire. we're told they're in the hospital, but they are expected to be okay. 583 tracy has just reopened and we have learned that as of 6:00 tonight, those evacuation orders will be downgraded to warnings, meaning people can return home

with the understanding that they need to be vigilant and need to be able to leave again. if that call is put out. a cause of this fire remains under investigation. tonight and we're live in tracy. cornell, bernard, abc seven news, cornell, thank you so much. >> let's bring in abc seven weather anchor spencer christian to talk about the winds that have really been problematic for those fire crews. spencer. they really have, j.r. in fact, we have windy conditions all across the bay area right now. >> here's a look at the broader picture. you can see we have winds here in san francisco up to 35mph right now. gusts to 41mph at sfo. but even away from the coast, in our inland areas, as we've been pointing out, it's a windy everywhere. so let's get closer to where the fires are. we've got weather conditions here right now at tracy and livermore and partial conditions at altamont. now, notice the winds are relatively calm in tracy. only 11 mile per hour gusts right now over livermore, 14 mile per hour gusts. breezy, but not terribly gusty there, but over in the altamont area,

we have gusts to nearly 30mph. and it's important to remember that as you get closer to the fire, these fires can generate their own microclimates and they can generate wind gusts near the base of the fire that are far greater than the winds at these locations that are receiving the weather observations. so the firefighters are up against a challenge right now as the winds are likely to continue being gusty during the late night and overnight hours before tapering off a bit tomorrow. and we have a little bit of a heat spike coming in a couple of days, which also increases concerns about the fires. i'll have a full look at the weather in just a few minutes. jr. >> spencer, thank you so much. we look forward to that. we are sending updates as they happen on this brushfire on the abc seven news bay area app. you can download it and enable push alerts to get news notifications sent to your mobile device. in the south bay police in san jose are investigating the city's 17th homicide of the year. officers got a call about a person down just after 1115 this morning near 17th street and east santa clara, right next to

roosevelt park. police tried to help the person, but the victim died at the scene. we don't know yet how they died or whether police have any suspects. two people are in critical condition after an suv hit them while they were setting up for the walnut creek farmers market this morning. police say it was a hit and run, and they later arrested the driver. abc seven news reporter ryan curry joins us live. ryan, what are you hearing from those vendors out there? >> yeah, j.r. good evening. i did speak with one vendor moments ago. he did tell me he was on his way to walnut creek to set up for the farmers market when he got the notice saying that it had been canceled. the farmers market happens here every single sunday. this is locust street, and it happens between la cassie and cole street. police saying that that crash happened closer to the cole street side of things. when people were setting up this morning. police say when they arrived, they saw two people who had been hit by an suv. they located the driver after the crash and arrested them. the vendor who i spoke with says he

sells here every single weekend. he has been doing so for several decades. he told me the people who were hit were vendors, but he does not know who they are yet. he's still waiting to get that. he says this weekend was supposed to be that of just a normal, regular farmers farmers market weekend that normally goes on in walnut creek. but he has say this area can be dangerous. >> they put the signs up, they put the blockage up to block the road. but people ignore that. they don't seem to. i mean, they'll drive up on the sidewalk to go buy concerns, obviously from vendors. >> i did reach out to walnut creek police for an update, waiting to hear back the name of the driver has not been released, but police did say they are expecting to be facing charges. the vendor you did just hear from says he police are here when things are normal. they are monitoring the farmers market while it's happening, meaning during the hours of the market. however, before and after he says they're not here. meaning when people are setting up and tearing down, they're not here. after this morning's crash , he says he would like that to

change. but for now, reporting live in walnut creek. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> thanks so much, ryan. happening today. polls just closed a few minutes ago in a historic election in mexico. country is likely to elect its first female president. mexican voters living here in the bay area showed up to the polls in san jose and san francisco today. just look at the line wrapping around the block outside of san francisco's consulate general of mexico. the two leading candidates are women claudia sheinbaum, part of the leftist party and backed by the outgoing president. the conservative candidate is social galvez. this is the first year that mexican citizens abroad can vote in person at consulates outside of mexico. >> it feels pretty good because we didn't see this much like mexican and like people, you know, come together to vote for our own rights. >> in parts of mexico, voters waited many hours in 104 degree heat to cast their ballots again . polls just closed at 5:00 with

the first results expected a few bay, a 3.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the alum rock neigorho in san jose early this morning. it happened around 3:30 a.m. the quake had a very shallodeptof just under six miles, and was feltidelin the area. people reported feeling the quake from san francisco to santa cruz. no significant damage or impact is expected. a criminal takedown involves toads in oakland. don't let the wide eyes fool you. here we learn why this toad is considered dangerous and some home grown talent used their musical skills to celebrate

potentially harmful incident. these six toads were being illegally shipped to the bay area. they're called granular toads and are usually found in the amazonian basin. they're a restricted species in california because they could pose a threat to bay area wildlife and ecology. the toads were seized by the california department of fish and wildlife and are now at the oakland zoo's vet hospital. the zoo is working with a wildlife confiscation network to find them a new home on the track. work that slowed bart service this weekend is expected to wrap up on time. bart suspended service this weekend between san francisco's 24th street mission station and daly city. the glen park and balboa park stations were closed, and there was also no green line service from berryessa to daly city. the agency warned of 30

hillsboro beat out nine other finalists in lagos bay area's mini master model builder 2024 competition. his winning concept a lego dragon in math class. the competition was held today at the legoland discovery center in milpitas. james advances to the national competition on july 31st, where he will need to build something based on the bay area. happening tomorrow, the final week of wheel of fortune, before longtime host pat sajak steps down. this week's theme is titled thanks for the memories and will involve tributes to

sajak. the 77 year old has hosted the iconic game show since 1983. last june, he announced he would retire following wheel of fortune's 41st season, which ends friday. ryan seacrest will take over as host in september. you can watch sajak's final shows weeknights at 730 here on abc seven news. join right now by spencer christian. and you know, in his heyday, he was averaging over 40 million viewers. so it's almost like this newscast. exactly right. >> maybe we'll pick up a couple of years now and increase our numbers. yes they might be outside enjoying the weather though. i hope they are. we've got pleasant weather out there. a bit breezy though, i should say. in fact, gusty in some spots. and as you can see, there's a mass of clouds pushing into the pacific northwest right now. some of those low clouds will form here in the bay area during the late night and overnight hours. but the main factor in the weather right now, the headline is the gusts up to 41mph at sfo, 24mph at novato. and all across the region. we

have fairly windy conditions. i did have a nice view for you here from sutro tower looking out over san francisco. apparently the low clouds here we go. you see a clearing a little bit 58 degrees in san francisco, right now we have mid 60s at oakland and hayward, low 70s at san jose and redwood city, 57 at half moon bay. cue the clouds. now the view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. the temperature readings at this hour 86 at santa rosa, petaluma 6877 napa. low 80s at fairfield and concord, 76 at livermore. and now we'll take a look at our forecast headlines tomorrow. mild but cooler than today was. but then tuesday and wednesday we're going to experience some sizzling summer like heat. in fact, the heat advisory will be in effect for % of thursday with the risk of heat related illness under these hot conditions. right now, though, we're looking at the evening and the overnight hours, bringing us an increase in clouds and of course, the cooling effect into tomorrow. so we'll see temperatures a little bit lower tomorrow than they were today. but the overnight numbers are not looking very low at all. it's going to be uncomfortably warm in some

spots, with overnight lows generally in the upper 50s to low and mid 60s. so if you don't have air conditioning, i hope you find a way to stay cool and sleep comfortably tonight. now. highs tomorrow 59 half moon bay 65, san francisco low 70s on the bay shoreline, mainly upper 70s inland. and i mentioned that heat spike. we have a heat advisory in effect for all of the bay area away from the coast and the shoreline from 8 a.m. tuesday to midnight, thursday. and it's an excessive heat warning for solano county under these conditions and increased risk of heat related illness if you don't stay hydrated and if you don't, and if you expose yourself to too much direct sunlight and heat. okay, so here's the accuweather seven day forecast cooler tomorrow mid 80s inland low 70s around the bay. upper 90s to about 100 inland. tuesday and wednesday, upper 80s to near 90 around the bay shoreline those two days. even on thursday as the heat eases a bit. still very warm inland with mid 90s expected, there, but the heat eases more on friday and

native american culture in oakland today. the free event had dancers, musicians, food vendors, and native artisan market and market there. this was just the third annual festival, and organizers say they hope for more in years to come. that looks like a lot of fun, and i love the dancing right there. we talk about this weather situation in spencer. i know the winds with the fire and then this week we lead into more sort of extreme weather or hot weather. yeah, it's going to be like a mini heatwave.
