livermore hills, but the wind wasn't so kind for a group of homes in san jose. a local farmers market flipped upside down before it even begins. a driver suspected of dui hits a booth and tries to drive away. a history making night in mexico. votes are being tallied in its presidential election. mexican citizens here in san francisco are upset with what they say happened in line. >> always live abc seven news starts right now. >> we begin tonight with the spread of flames in a section of homes in east san jose, three separate fires all burning at once, just blocks apart. in this one neighborhood, we're hearing from one homeowner who was inside, as tonight figured out how it all happened. good

evening, i'm j.r. stone. our sky seven was up overhead as seemingly out of nowhere, a trio of neighboring homes all erupted in flames. but luckily, firefighters were able to get everyone out safely. crews first got word around 4 p.m. they say the initial fire came from a garage on sand point drive. embers spread the flames to a home next door and one down the street. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is hearing from witnesses and one person who was even inside when fire broke out. >> a blanket of smoke covering this east san jose neighborhood sunday night. tall, bright flames coming from one home as firefighters desperately try to contain it and then i could hear, like, probably propane tanks start exploding. >> my car went up. >> heather turner looks on while her home burns.

>> i was inside my house and i could hear crackling and glass breaking, and as i was looking around, i could see that my bedroom window on the farthest side, the window broke and there was fire in the side yard between our two houses. >> it started as a garage fire in one of the homes, and it quickly spread to heather's house and her neighbors, the san jose fire department routinely started putting it out, but while they were doing that, their fight turned into a battle . >> while we were on scene initiating fire attack, uh- neighborhood residents report more fires starting in the area as two homes next to each other burned. >> the wind carried the embers down the street where another home caught fire. luckily the damage was minor. >> crews worked very hard in very difficult conditions in hot weather and windy conditions. >> no one was hurt in these fires, but as a cloud of smoke surrounds heather, she wonders what will happen next. >> where do you go? where do you go from here, i don't know, maybe my sister will come pick

me up. i can't drive anywhere. >> heather believes something between her house and her neighbors is what caused this whole thing. the san jose fire department has not released the official cause. they say that remains under investigation in san jose. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> ryan, thank you very much. the way that fire spread from home to home, then down the block is one example of how dangerous these winds can be. >> embers flying onto the roof roof. higher embers blowing from that initial fire traveled far, igniting another home about a block away. >> a p-g-and-e's camera caures the moment those flames jumped to a whole new street at 5:14 p.m, we see that fire appear behind a tree on judkins court, and by 516 you can see those flames have spread to a home only a matter of minutes to make this neighborhood fire so much worse, doctor steve quarles is an advisor emeritus at university of california, working to make homes safer from wildfire. he says this fire is a

classic case of ember cast, where strong winds carry embers far from the flames, creating new pockets of fire. >> that kind of isn't isn't so unusual. embers can be blown, you know, easily up to a quarter of a mile or half a mile and still have enough energy when they land to ignite. >> we're also tracking california's largest wildfire so far this year, smoldering near five 8-80 in tracy tonight, the corral fire started late last night and quickly jumped in size. here are the latest figures from cal fire tonight. the fire has scorched scorched more than 14,000 acres and destroyed one home, though it has not grown significantly since today's noon update. firefighters say it's now 50% contained. some neighborhoods were evacuated earlier, but those orders were downgraded to warnings around 6:00 tonight. two firefighters were injured in the first hours yesterday. cal fire says they went to the

hospital with minor to moderate burns. to add to the concern, the fire is burning near the lawrence livermore national lab site 300 and experimental test site of explosive materials. >> when we started seeing the flames, we saw how catastrophic it was and the whole hills were burning. i think from my from my house, we could actually see like a big line of fire. >> more than 400 firefighters helped stop the flames just yards from homes. fire crews tell us today's weather helped with calmer winds instead of yesterday's intense gusts. and then over in concord, yet another fire. this one burned the brush along highway four near the willow pass road exit. it first popped up around 830. it was quickly contained within a half an hour at about two acres in size, but illustrates just how active today and this weekend have been. let's bring in abc seven news weather anchor

spencer christian because as with the conditions in both of these fires, the winds and the heat not going to be leaving us this week. >> you're right about that, j.r. the wind has been a huge factor so far. we have heat building later in the week, but let me show you right now what the wind speeds are like across the region. much calmer than earlier this evening when we had strong gusts 25 to 30mph in many locations. and i'll take you over to the location now of the corral fire near tracy, and you can see the wind is calm in both tracy and livermore. however, over in altamont, although the temperature and relative humidity are not being displayed right now, you can see the wind gusts up to 26mph, which is still a significant factor for the firefighters there. good news is the relative humidity is rising, so that will help stop the spread of fires. however, as we look ahead, you can see over the next couple of days, starting on tuesday, inland temperatures getting up to and even above 103 degrees 100 degrees on tuesday and wednesday . so we've got a bit of a heat spike coming our way. hopefully we can find the firefighters can get full containment of that

fire before the heat kicks in. but even then with we have a heat advisor, in effect we may have gusty winds again. so there will still be concerns about wildfires as we go into the middle of the upcoming week. i'll have the full accuweather seven day forecast in a few minutes. jr look forward to that. >> spencer. you can check in on those weather forecasts and get the latest on these fires through the abc seven news bay area app for instant news and weather, download it and be sure to turn on the notifications. owns the weekly farmers market in walnut creek. had to be called off today after two people were hit by a driver who then tried to drive away from the scene. police say it happened early this morning, sometime after 5 a.m, while people were setting up their booths on locust street. one vendor tells us it was two vendors who were hit. they were taken to the hospital in critical condition. vendor we spoke with says the area is dangerous. >> in the morning, they put the signs up, they put the blockage up to block the road. but people ignore that. they don't seem to. i mean, they'll drive up on the

sidewalk to go by, he adds. >> police usually come during the market, but he'd like to see them there earlier while they're setting up. the driver of the suv was later found and arrested. their name has not been released, but they are expected to be facing charges. now to the critical votes being tallied up in mexico's presidential election. as tonight, both main parties are claiming victory. the country will likely elect its first ever female president. sochi galvez is pictured on the left. she represents the country's conservative party right now. early preliminary numbers show her trailing claudia shinbone of the leftist party. full results are expected to roll in overnight and into tomorrow. it's the largest election in the country's history and as you can see, mexican citizens were able to cast their ballots in the united states in person for the first time in 23 mexican consulate sites. we have learned many here at the consulate in

san francisco who were in line, were turned away after the locations closed at 5 p.m. our time, the national institute of elections tells me they were allotted 1500 ballots, but did not have time to register everyone who was lined up outside. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on the line, but important wait. >> the line, spanning four blocks around the consulate general of mexico sunday, mexican voters showing up big time at the san francisco polls. >> this is a party for democracy in mexico. we are all very excited and proud that everybody showed up and everybody wants a change and we're here for that. >> voters arriving from across the bay area waiting for hours here. >> we've been in the line for probably 2 or 3 hours already, and we're halfway there. a lot of people came at three in the morning and they barely left just right now. >> this is the first year mexican citizens living in the u.s. have been able to vote at the country's consulate. previously the options were to vote by mail or electronically. >> we've been waiting for five

criminal conviction. a new abc poll found abc news poll that is found 50% of americans think the former president's guilty verdict in his hush money trial was correct. almost as many 49% think trump should end his presidential campaign. as a

result, though, the poll found his favorability hasn't changed since the verdict. still, at 31% last night, trump made his first public outing since his conviction, walking out to cheers at an ultimate fighting championship match in new york. shortly after he sat down the crowd started chanting we love trump today, the former president's attorneys are repeating his promise to appeal the conviction on 34 felony counts. >> we plan to vigorously defend president trump's rights in the appellate courts all the way up to the us supreme court, if necessary. >> that abc news poll found president biden's favorability is also low and unchanged at 32. hunter biden is preparing for his federal trial tomorrow on three felony gun charges. this is the first time in u.s. history that the child of a current president will stand trial. he is accused of lying about his drug use in october of 2018, on a form to buy a gun in

delaware. he has acknowledged going through addiction during that time, but his lawyers say he did not break the law, calling the case politically motivated. as we celebrate pride year round here on abc seven and the pride month, celebrations continue across the bay area tomorrow, san francisco's city hall will hold a flag raising ceremony in the morning. city officials and community members will gather to help kick off the month's festivities. if you want to join them. it starts at 11:30 a.m. the mayor's office, san francisco, has events planned just about every weekend sweet groove and sounds there. today. the people's garden brought live music to the bayview neighborhood. people on third street came for the soul jam session. plenty of soul food. on top of the pride celebrations, organizers are marking black music month with several black artists from the bay area. as pride month rolls

on. remember, abc7 is the only place you can watch the 54th annual san francisco pride parade live on june 30th. streaming everywhere you watch abc seven news. well, about 25,000 people showed up for a smash hit success. downtown skrillex and fred against rave at san francisco's civic center plaza brought out huge crowds last night. mayor london breed was watching from across the street from the balcony of city hall. the sold out event had some surprises, including a showing from rapper and producer anderson. paak it also served as a sweet homecoming for skrillex, who lived in san francisco for ten years. music could be heard all the way from the castro district, and they wrapped up the show by the 10 p.m. per city curfew, joined right now by spencer christian. fun times all around. yeah, it looks like quite an event. yeah, all the people just packing into san francisco and it's nice and cool here, which is a different story outside of the city. >> exactly. we've got some heat coming. it was warm today in the

inland areas, as you point out. cool here in the city. but we've got some intense heat coming our way in just a couple of days, so it might even warm up here in san francisco. here's a look at what's going on as you look at the satellite radar composite map. you see some very active weather pushing into the pacific northwest, some rainfall. in fact, we're not getting any of that, but we are getting that onshore flow, which accounts in part for the very breezy, gusty conditions we've had the last day or so. and even now, although the winds have diminished a bit, we've got gusts to 13mph at novato and over in the inland areas, rio vista has wind speeds, sustained winds at 25mph. so let's take a look under clear conditions right now from sutro tower down onto san francisco, where it's 57 degrees 58. at oakland, we've got low 60s at hayward, san jose, redwood city, 54 at half moon bay. another clear view from mount tam looking down onto the bay. so far, the marine marine layer has not moved into uh- obstruct our view. 69 degrees in santa rosa right now, 57 at petaluma. we've got low to mid 60s at napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. now we move along and take a look at

our forecast headlines tomorrow. mild but cooler than today was. so we'll have more clouds in the picture tomorrow tuesday and wednesday. sizzling triple digit heat will move into the bay area in our inland areas. it'll be pretty warm in other spots as well, and the heat advisory has been issued will be in effect for wednesday. actually, tuesday, wednesday into thursday night because of the risk of heat related illness from this heat spike that's coming our way. right now, we're looking at the overnight conditions and the forecast animation. you'll see some clouds developing overnight , continuing into the early morning hours, but it looks like the sun will break through as well, giving us a partly cloudy start to the day tomorrow. maybe even a couple of spots of drizzle near the coastline overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the upper 50s to low 60s, so very mild overnight and tomorrow mild as well, but not very warm. inland areas will warm up mainly to the upper 70s to around 8081 degrees around the bay shoreline. low to mid 70s on the coast. we'll see highs around 60 now skipping ahead to tuesday. we'll see upper 90s to a few triple digits inland. then on wednesday even more triple digits showing up as

the heat intensifies a bit, and even on thursday as the heat eases just a tad, it's still going to be warm to hot in our inland areas. as a result, a heat advisory will be in effect for all of the bay area except the bay shoreline and the coast and over in solano county it will be an excessive heat warning, so limit your time outside in the intense heat. limit your exposure to the sun. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. those two very hot days coming our way tuesday and wednesday. we'll also produce highs near the bay shoreline near 90 degrees. so it's going to be warm just about everywhere . there's a still very warm, but the heat eases a tad. friday more cooling moves in and then by next weekend, temperatures will be back in a more comfortable and in a healthier range. more in a seasonal range. 80s inland 70s around the bay. >> you truly just hope we don't have those intense winds again when that heat comes on. >> that's a concern. obviously a concern for firefighters and for people who live in those high fire uh- zones. yeah. >> thank you so much, spencer.

we are tracking two major fires tonight across the bay area in east san jose. a fire starting in a garage spread to three homes tonight. strong winds sent flames and embers flying through the neighborhood off of quimby road. those fires are now out, and firefighters are investigating the cause. the other fire we're following is the largest wildfire in the

state right now. containment is up to 50% on the corral. fire burning near tracy. it started yesterday near the lawrence livermore national lab site 300. the fire burned more than 14,000 acres, with no significant growth reported in several hours. we know it destroyed one home overnight and came very close to others along i-5. 80 neighbors are relieved tonight that their lawn is all that burned. >> we're so incredibly thankful. like beyond belief. uh- seeing part of our grass right there burned is like scary enough. >> people in tracy who were under evacuation orders are able to go home tonight, though firefighters are telling them to be prepared if the fire flares up again. no word yet on the cause of the corral fire. tomorrow in san ramon, p-g-and-e's will be giving us a look at its new wildfire prevention, technology and mitigation strategies. they plan to talk about the progress they've already made ahead of this year's fire season, and

about work still to come. attendees will get a tour of the hazard awareness and warning center, and the crew will demonstrate how they use their equipment for fuel moisture testing and fire mitigation work in the north bay. a search and rescue success for two separate people in sonoma. a missing 62 year old hiker was reported missing in the occidental area last night at nine teams searched through the night and into the day until they were able to find them. noon today is when they found them. took them to the hospital with minor injuries. a 28 year old woman and her two dogs were also found today in rural healdsburg, after her boyfriend reported her missing after spending the day on the beach, they were found safe around 11 p.m. last night after getting turned around on the way to the car. water is flowing again to downtown atlanta after a two day outage shut down businesses and left many homes in a pinch. a large part of the city remains under

an order to boil water before drinking it. mayor says one of the city's two major water mains has been repaired. >> we could have done a better job over the past day and for that i apologize. >> the city handed out bottled water at fire stations. the repairs were complex to complete in a tight space. megan the stallion had to cancel friday and saturday night shows because of the outage, but they were both able to be rescheduled to sunday and monday. now to a stinky escalation in the conflict between north and south korea. north korea is promising to stop sending trash filled balloons across the border at least for now. hundreds of balloons started falling across south korea this week. they're carrying everything from cigaret butts to cloth scraps and even manure to north korean leaders say it's in response to south korean activists floating leaflets of propaganda over the border. south korea threatened

to retaliate, and earlier today, north korea said it would stop the trash campaign temporarily. late last night, nasa launched the first of two tiny satellites that could have a huge impact on the understanding of our weather, climate change and sea level rise right here in the bay area. abc seven meteorologist drew tuma has an inside look. >> turns out, if you want to understand the future of earth's climate, you need to measure it top to bottom. that's why nasa researchers are about to zero in on the north and south poles, trying to understand how much heat is flowing through the earth's basement and attic region, eyes that are warming even more quickly than the rest of the planet. brian druin is a principal investigator with the nasa jet propulsion lab in pasadena. brian, why are we studying the poles? why is that so important in regards to the rest of the earth? >> there's a tremendous amount of ice uh, which when it melts, it goes into the oceans and

spreads around the whole planet and causes the sea level to rise. >> first, it helps to understand that hotter air from the tropics typically churns around the planet, with a significant portion being released into space at the polar regions. but what if increasing greenhouse gases changed that pattern? to learn the answer, nasa is launching two shoebox sized satellites in a mission called pre-fire. they'll orbit both the arctic and antarctica, measuring the radiant energy being released and that area where the heat is emitted. >> it's not well studied, and it's changing. it's changing fast due to the warming climate, and the consequences could be lasting. >> researchers have already documented a decades long pattern of global sea level rise, but fellow nasa jpl researcher josh willis also studies how that ocean warming is melting glaciers from underneath, and that includes massive areas from greenland to the so-called doomsday glacier in antarctica. measuring 80

miles across glacier in antarctica are the elephant in the room. >> they're huge, they have the potential to disappear very quickly. and they're really being driven by ocean warming. >> understanding the changes at the poles could be key to predicting the changes the bay area will see in the coming decades. everything from erosion along our coastline to rising sea levels that could threaten the shores of san francisco bay. >> the rise we saw in the early 90s was less than half of the rate of rise that we see now, but what can we expect and how much time we have to prepare are still critical questions. >> questions nasa hopes to answer, in part with the help of two shoe boxes in space, collecting critical data about our planet. drew tuma, abc seven news. >> happening tomorrow, the final week of wheel of fortune before longtime host pat sajak steps down. this week's theme is titled thanks for the memories

late in the off season when they picked up both third base and matt chapman and starting pitcher blake snell, now the latter. the reigning nl cy young award winner has yet to regain his form, and this afternoon against the yankees, another setback. snell threw 99 pitches today and this was the final one in the top of the fifth inning, a ball to alex verdugo, and he immediately hops off the mound in obvious discomfort. officially it's a left groin strain, but he recently spent a month on the injured list, or il, with an adductor strain, which essentially it's the same thing, manager bob melvin figures snell will head back on the injured list with this latest setback, and snell is frustrated because he feels like he was really close to returning to his cy young winning form of last season. >> we'll get there. i mean, i can stay here. there's been a lot that i've learned this year that's going to help me get back quicker and start, dominating. so it sucks that this happened, but it happened. so face it head on and attack it. and get back.
