confinement or even prison. >> abc's christiane cordero has the latest on both of these cases. christiane. good morning. >> rhiannon. good morning. as hunter biden's trial gets underway today, former president trump has a new suggestion when it comes to his own criminal case. this morning, former president trump is suggesting the supreme court weigh in on his felony conviction in new york, where a jury found him guilty of falsifying business records. judge mershon will sentence trump july 11th, four days before the national convention. trump on social media last night took issue with that timing, asking highly conflicted judge mershon will make a decision which will determine the future of our nation. trump then suggesting the united states supreme court must decide my revenge will be success and i mean that. trump promised revenge during an interview over the weekend, saying this when asked about the possibility of facing house arrest or even prison time. >> i think it would be tough for the public to take, you know, at a certain point, there's a breaking point. >> this is another dangerous appeal to violence. and it is

yet another reason why americans are going to decide they don't want a convicted felon in the oval office. >> trump also acknowledged he does not sleep a lot these days. >> i don't say that as a badge of courage. you know, a lot of people don't sleep and they maybe do, i rarely eat breakfast. i don't it's funny, i love food, but i don't necessarily. i'm too anxious. experts say it's highly unlikely trump will get prison time, and with a lengthy appeal process expected, his sentencing will likely be delayed until after november's election. >> i think when you look at the jury instructions here, judge mershon, essentially, i wouldn't say rigged the deliberations, but certainly steered the jury towards the verdict that he clearly wanted. >> but polls show most independent voters believe trump got a fair trial. and 1 in 6 republicans, 16, say trump should end his campaign because of his conviction. trump has railed against the justice department, claiming president biden weaponized the agency against him. but today, prosecutors from the justice department will be in a delaware courtroom for jury selection in

hunter biden's trial, the president's son faces three felony gun charges, accused of falsely swearing on a form that he was not a drug user when he bought a gun in 2018, attorney general merrick garland appointed special counsel david weiss, a trump appointed d.a, to the case. hunter's lawyers could cast doubt on who exactly filled out the form and whether hunter biden was even an addict at the time. >> the uniqueness of this case is that hunter biden's addiction is very public, just think about it this way. how would you know if someone had an addiction? that's usually a very private, issue. >> jury selection could last up to five days. if convicted, hunter could face up to 25 years in prison. but nonviolent first time offenders rarely get serious prison time for gun charges. >> andrew christian, thank you. fire crews are getting the upper hand on a wildfire burning about 60 miles east of san francisco. it's already burned about 22mi■, but it's now 50% contained families in about 100 homes that were forced to evacuate have since been allowed to return.

strong winds and extreme heat in the area helped fuel the flames over the weekend. >> the other big story from california this morning a serious shark attack at a popular beach. a california man is recovering from what's being called a significant shark attack. north of san diego. >> he grabbed a few others, ran down without knowing what he was running toward, and responding to. >> lifeguards say the 46 year old was swimming off del mar beach around 9 a.m. when the shark bit him. >> there was an initial bump and then there was a bite, and then there was the shark still in range, potentially like coming back toward him and him having to, like, reach out and kind of defend. and that's where where the hand and arm lacerations were sustained. >> the victim was swimming with a group. they brought him to shore, where lifeguards jumped into action. >> there was definitely a lot of blood in the water. and so we started pulling him in, a surfer came over and gave us his board and so put him on the board, and

i jumped on top of him and started paddling in. >> and he was in stable condition after surgery with injuries to his torso, arm and hand, experts say the likelihood of an encounter is low, but sharks are coming closer to shore on both coasts because of cleaner waters and booming baitfish population. officials in some beach towns are now using drones to track sharks, some with thermal imaging and capabilities to drop flotation devices. experts are analyzing the dna from the man's wetsuit. they're trying to determine the size and the type of shark, one expert says. it was likely a juvenile great white shark. >> and breaking overnight. mexico has. alexis has elected its first female president. former mexico city mayor claudia sheinbaum is celebrating a landslide win over the opposition candidate, who is also a woman. sheinbaum was backed by the current president. she'll also be the first jewish person to lead the country. >> israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is under growing pressure to accept a ceasefire deal that's laid out by president biden. the deal

calls for a six week pause in fighting, and it would secure the release of hostages. now, the white house says if hamas agrees, israel would say yes to the deal. meanwhile due to the war in gaza, the maldives, a majority muslim country, is banning israelis from entering the country about 11,000 israelis visited the maldives last year. >> we haven't heard his name in a while. but today, doctor anthony fauci, the man who became the face of the covid pandemic response, is back in the spotlight, headed to capitol hill to face some tough questions. here's abc's alison kosik this morning. >> doctor anthony fauci is set to publicly testify on capitol hill for the first time in two years in what's expected to be a fiery hearing led by house republicans. >> take down people. incorrect. as usual. senator, you are incorrect. almost everything you well know, you deny, you deny. >> today's hearing about the government's handling of the pandemic could be reminiscent of heated exchanges like this. fauci claims senator rand paul's

repeated attacks have put his life and his family's safety at risk. >> that kindles the crazies out there and i have life threats upon my life, harassment of my family and my children. >> ahead of the hearing, a subcommittee has released a transcript of closed door interviews with fauci in january, in which he was questioned about whether he knew about former colleagues allegedly skirting public records laws. in one email exchange, a former colleague wrote to another there is no worry about freedom of information act requests. foias i can either send stuff to tony on his private gmail or hand it to him at work or at his house, he is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble. doctor fauci also acknowledged in the closed door session, as he had before publicly, that the wuhan, china lab leak hypothesis
