>> our team staying on top of all of it. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley and i'm ama daetz. >> what we saw today in the past couple of days is concerning as firefighters were trying to fully tame the state's first wildfire of the season. other brush fires later broke out right nearby. >> we saw those winds and flying embers turn a building under construction into a total loss on the peninsula. but first, we want to fill you in on what's still to come. the first heat wave of the season arrives tomorrow, and it carries that apparent fire danger for many of us. yes. >> let's bring in abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel now to walk us through what we could be seeing. sandhya. well, temperatures are going to spike tomorrow and that fire danger will remain elevated. so dan, let's take a look at the heat advisory in effect for all inland valleys and mountains starting at 8 a.m. tomorrow. it runs until midnight thursday. we have the excessive heat warning for solano county, and that begins at 11 a.m. tomorrow. and it is in effect until 8 p.m. thursday. there is going to be a significant increased risk of

heat related illnesses, so keep that in mind. many of our inland areas will be in that moderate to major heat risk for inland areas. so just keep that in mind as well as those temperatures spike. look at how hot it's going to get. it's going to be a summer like sizzle 98 in santa rosa. triple digits fairfield, upper 90s, concord, livermore, 91, san jose and 92 degrees in gilroy. i'm going to be back to let you know how long the heat wave is going to last. coming up. ummah. all right, sandy, we'll check back. today's winds were what fueled this huge fire at an affordable housing development in the redwood city area. you see, just how big those chunks of embers were threatening nearby homes. neighbors are allowed back home tonight, but the fire on middlefield road did trigger evacuation orders and air quality alerts. the building was meant to be 179 affordable housing units, and a child care center was expected to be finished early next year. but tonight it is a total loss. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez has more on the huge fire fight in the middle of this

neighborhood. >> a housing project a decade in the making goes up in flames, officials say a fire broke out at the six story building off middlefield road around 1015 monday morning. fire officials say dozens of construction workers safely evacuated at the time. 8-80 division five. this is new video we're seeing from a resident who saw the fire from his backyard. >> and it was blowing towards the houses where we lived. and then my heart really started pounding. i mean, i my heartbeat was very, very fast. >> rene salas and his family were one of many who had to evacuate from surrounding homes. he waited all day to return. >> i've been hanging out here for since ten in the morning. >> the affordable housing project was slated to have 179 units, a child care center and more. it was a joint effort by san mateo county and mercy housing. the total cost of the project was $155 million.

>> construction. started last year, anticipating to be completed at the by the end of next year, and you know, it's just heartbreaking. it's a tragedy for the community. >> reporter during the firefight, crews said wind was a challenge. harold chappell, who spent 40 years in the fire service, said debris or embers can travel high in the air from a building fire. >> on these types of fires, you're probably looking at maybe up to a mile. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. chappell, homan said. this eight alarm fire reminded him of san jose's santana row fire in 2002, finding the cause will not be easy. >> everything that probably where the origin of that fire was, is burned and it's gone. so it's not like a house fire that has, you know, furnishings or walls with sheetrock on it where i can look for, you know, flame travel. >> fire officials say no injuries were reported and no other structures were damaged.

>> and i think, you know, they did a great job of containing it to the structure of origin. but at the end of the day, you know, it's still going to be it's pretty, you know, pretty catastrophic. >> a resident tells me crews knocked down part of the scaffolding since there was concern it collapsed. fire investigators will be working with the local building department to see what kind of investigation they can perform, so they can determine a cause in redwood city. lauren martinez, abc seven news happening now firefighters are monitoring a series of fires, all within miles of each other near livermore and tracy. >> the corral fire is the state's largest wildfire of the year so far and still smoldering in tracy tonight. the patterson fire raced through more than 100 acres of grass in just two hours, fanned by high winds. and tonight, dozens of people are still without power in livermore from a small fire on the eastern edge of town. let's start now with the patterson fire burning near altamont pass. flames move fast and the grass there off. 580. it's burned. 110 acres

since it started at about 415 this afternoon. containment is now up to 75, with no buildings threatened tonight. patterson pass is still closed. however, firefighters are sharing significant progress on the corral fire. that fire in tracy is now 85% contained with no growth reported since yesterday. so they've really stopped it in its tracks. all evacuations are lifted. the fire did destroy one home in its first few hours on saturday. neighbors tell us they rushed in to help and stayed until 3 a.m. to keep the flames from spreading to more homes. >> i took off running up the driveway, and i just thought it was a matter of seconds before my house was going to burn the last fire we're tracking tonight is off cross road in eastern livermore at the last time we checked, firefighters said it's burned at least ten acres. >> a power lines also came down in that area. p-g-and-e's says 42 people are without power right now. they're expecting to get it back on by 5 a.m. we do

psychedelics. the fda will meet tomorrow to look at treatments for ptsd using mdma or ecstasy. it follows years of clinical work from a san jose company, as well as years of debate. tonight, abc seven news reporter tim johns has more on what this new world could look like. >> on tuesday, officials from the food and drug administration will meet to discuss new potential treatment for people suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. advisers will specifically be looking at the results from clinical trials that examined a new treatment that coupled the drug mdma, along with therapy. lori tipton participated in one of those trials. >> the way that it allows a person such as myself that has had immense traumas to feel safe and open to discuss, like the worst memories, of my life, there's nothing there's nothing that i've encountered in all my years of different therapeutic models that has ever allowed me to do that. tipton is one of 8 million adults estimated to suffer from ptsd in the u.s, a disorder that san francisco based psychologist doctor andrea

zorbas says can be life altering. >> it can be so debilitating that somebody cannot get out of bed, they cannot work, they cannot maintain relationships, they cannot leave the house. the push to use drugs like mdma and others like it is nothing new, especially here in california. for years, some bay area lawmakers have sought to decriminalize certain psychedelics to help people suffering from ailments like ptsd. state senator scott wiener has been at the forefront of that push. his bill died in the state legislature earlier this year, but wiener says he and others are examining ways to possibly revive it. >> there are some people who are just categorically opposed to doing anything that could be perceived as normalizing drug use. they're just against it, and my response is that people are already using these substances. >> as doctor zorba says, for many ptsd sufferers, traditional treatments oftentimes don't work. that's why she's hoping the fda will ultimately decide to approve the new treatment.

>> my hope is that we can look past the stigma and we can really realize the positive effects and we can update our mindset of what can help somebody. >> the fda is expected to make a decision regarding the new treatment by august in san francisco. tim johns, abc seven news. >> and our next abc seven news advancer at 11. a vote on the controversial climate change study aboard the uss hornet in alameda, the historic ship there. tomorrow, the city council will decide a whether to let the experiment restart. scientists want to spray sea salt into the air from that decommissioned aircraft carrier. they're trying to see if those particles can reflect heat back into space, potentially slowing global warming. the city stopped the experiment over concerns it would hurt people's health and the environment. a review by two outside experts found. the research poses no risk, and our final abc seven news advancer at

11 the building tensions on uc campuses as we enter the last week of classes for the spring quarter, strikes are increasing at three more uc campuses uc san diego and uc santa barbara started today. >> uc irvine is set to start on wednesday and today for a second time. the ucs were blocked in getting a court order to stop the strikes as a result, teaching assistants aren't doing their usual grading work. it's a week before final exams at many campuses, grading deadlines are fast approaching and it may jeopardize graduation. >> 70 people face trespassing charges for a protest today at the lobby of san francisco's israeli consulate pro-palestinian protesters vow to occupy the building until they were removed. police put up barricades and we saw officers remove several people from the building. officers say they arrested people who refused to leave. they were cited and then released. >> new at 11 people are gathering in san francisco

petition calling on the el dorado county district attorney's office to open a criminal investigation in the first h5n1 bird flu cases have landed in san francisco. >> two infected chickens were found during an inspection of a live bird market in the bayview last month. the birds were asymptomatic, the health department says they monitored the market employees for ten days. none of them got sick. they also say no members of the public were exposed. >> the big life cycle bike ride is passing through santa cruz today. cyclists are taking on great distances to raise money for the san francisco aids foundation and other nonprofits. they kicked off yesterday at cow palace and set off on a 545 mile journey down the california coast to los angeles. riders have raised hundreds of millions of dollars since the annual event began in 1994. organizers say they've brought in nearly $11 million for this year's life cycle. heads up for this weekend. >> caltrain is canceling service between san francisco and san jose so it can test its new electric trains. there will be
