the beaches trying to keep cool you know got to find your spot. they certainly do. >> we have team coverage on this week's hot weather. abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is live in the east bay. >> and we'll get to leslie in a second. but let's start with spencer christian. how hot is it going to get the next couple of days? spencer. >> oh, well, let me show you how hot it is right now. they'll give you some clue. larry, we've already reached 100 degrees plus in many inland locations, and tomorrow there may be more inland spots topping out in the triple digits. right now it's 100 at saint helena and fairfield. it was 90. it was 100 in santa rosa just earlier. it's cooled down to 98. and all around the bay shoreline you can see we have temperatures right now near 80 degrees. look at the 24 hour temperature change is stunning. it's 20 degrees or more warmer than at this time yesterday in many bay area locations. and of course, there's this heat advisory that we have in effect until midnight thursday night for all locations in the bay area away from the coast and the bay shoreline. and of course, it's an excessive heat warning for solano county. under these conditions, heat related illnesses are possible.

as we look ahead to thursday, you can see that a little bit of cooling, but not much until friday. it will start to feel more comfortable on friday and saturday as temperatures settle into a more seasonable range. now, under these conditions, you're advised we are advised to drink plenty of fluids and wear lightweight clothing, take breaks in the shade or air conditioning when possible, and recognize the signs of heat related illness. if you're thinking of going to the beach to cool down, we have a beach hazard statement in effect until 12 a.m. friday until midnight thursday. as the surf is rough and there may be dangerous sneaker waves, so bear that in mind. and a little bit later i'll have the accuweather seven day forecast showing some cooler weather. jr. >> spencer, thank you so much. today on 3 p.m. on getting answers, i spoke with chris field, a professor within the stanford door school of sustainability. he quickly pointed out some of the dangers of the heat wave and ways that people can protect themselves. >> and one of the things that is important to remember is that these early season heat waves

are especially troubling and especially dangerous, mainly because people aren't ready for them. but but taking breaks, looking for shade, dressing in reflective clothing, all those can really save lives. >> field had one other piece of advice during the heat wave look out for the people around you. >> all right, now let's get to abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley, who is live in walnut creek, with a look at how people there are trying to keep their cool in the east bay. less >> well, you know, you might think of rolling down to your neighborhood pool, but in this case, this pool was closed until just five minutes ago. the swim teams are moving in right now, and that's because a lot of pools with school still in session in many places, aren't opening until this weekend at larkey park. but we decided it's only 98 degrees here. why not head further east? and we checked out a cherry farm. >> we'd like to try to just warn customers. sometimes we'll post on instagram, like just letting everybody know it's going to be a really hot day today.

>> so let's go a couple of rows and look okay. >> the cherry pit in brentwood is one of nearly 60 u-pick farms out in far eastern contra costa county. the cherry season is in full swing despite temperatures hitting 100 degrees. >> a lot of our cherries are favorite. cherries are kind of winding down a bit. we have a new variety that's a later season variety called lapin. >> the 100 degree heat is actually good for these late season cherries. it will accelerate the ripening so people can come pick them this weekend. close to a thousand people a day can come out to pick cherries on a single weekend day. >> it is really hot, so we always make sure customers come prepared that they have a lot of water, that, you know, they wear sunscreen and just take it easy while they're here. >> this is a nice compared to stockton. >> this family came prepared. >> i wasn't worried about the heat. they they have water in the car and ice. so they're all right. and then we usually don't stay out. like when it's hot. we don't stay out very, very long. >> sometimes like the heat.

sometimes it's just overwhelming. >> but there's a payoff. how how is it yummy? some followed it up with an ice cream treat at this brentwood splash pad, where kids darted into the sprays of water for some relief from the relentless heat that is kicking off the summer season. get ready for wednesday. it is extremely hot out here in the east bay, and as you were hearing, we're going to have a little bit more of this coming throughout the week. so brace yourself. it's the beginning of a long, hot summer reporting live in walnut creek. i'm leslie brinkly, abc seven news. >> leslie, thank you so much. looks like the swim team showed up there to a brush fire that destroyed a home and injured two firefighters is now 90% contained. the corral fire started saturday afternoon near livermore and tracy. it burned some 14,000 acres, more than 22mi■!s. at one point, the fire

triggered mandatory evacuations and shut down lanes of i-5 80. >> we're learning more today about that eight alarm fire that destroyed a building in unincorporated redwood city. and today we're hearing from the developers. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes also spoke with neighbors. finally able to return to their homes. >> a frightening eight alarm fire tore through this building monday. that building considered a total loss. high wind not only made it a difficult fire fight, it also led to separate spot fires. now, i want to give you an idea as to just how far some of the embers traveled from this fire. this is obviously the building behind me. the wind carried some embers as far away as this field right here, where right now you can still see scarring and debris from the fire. on monday, neighbors and fire officials telling us that some of those embers traveled even farther than this. we had debris all the way down into palo alto. >> i'm hearing this morning, which is amazing. >> still, that fire was most dangerous to those who lived right next to it. >> when i evacuated, the flames

were already over and the heat was so intense and embers falling, i was i was for sure like, we're going to lose the house. >> james and michelle smith finally able to go back into their home tuesday morning after an overnight evacuation. michelle telling us that they moved fast to protect their home. he ran out with a the water hose and he started just basically watering our backyard and our neighbor's yard, their house. thankfully spared, though the backyard is torn apart, the downed fence revealing more of the extensive damage done to the building. >> we are currently under investigation for the cause of that fire. >> the affordable housing project was planned to have 179 units. it was a joint effort by san mateo county and mercy housing. tuesday we heard from the contractor on the project, roberts obayashi. it said in a statement. we are devastated that building b 104 of the units was destroyed by fire down to the podium slab. the fire started on the fifth floor and workers attempted to put the fire out with nearby fire extinguishers. but it grew too

quickly and within three hours the entire building was gone. the statement went on to say that no hot work was being done on the site, and they too are waiting to find out the cause. mercy housing said that it's fully committed to rebuilding fire. crews continue to monitor hot spots more than 24 hours after the fire was contained, and said they'd stay in place for as long as needed. in san mateo county, zach fuentes, abc seven news zach, thanks so much. >> a suspect allegedly connected to the fatal shooting of an armored truck guard is now in custody, police say 28 year-old artemio torres drove the car used in the robbery and shooting of 60 year old john mendez at kaiser hospital in san leandro in 2022. authorities in southern california arrested torres, the man accused of killing mendez was arrested back in october of 2022. he reportedly worked with mendez and was familiar with his route. june is gun violence awareness month and today a bay area lawmaker made a commitment to residents. napa congressman

mike thompson vowed to keep working on gun control measures. he is the chair of congress's gun violence prevention task force. >> i'm a gun owner. >> i support the second amendment. most people in my district fall into that same category. i can't go to the most rural parts of my district without hearing from students and their parents that they're afraid, and they're afraid that their communities aren't safe because of the issue of gun violence, thompson says there have been 194 mass shootings this year, more than days of the year so far. >> building a better bay area, focusing now on san francisco, and an effort to infuse new life into parts of the city. mayor london breed today announcing an action plan to liven up union square and the yerba buena districts. her new budget proposal includes funds to transform the areas into new neighborhoods where people will live, work and play. >> it is so important and right now our downtown needs all of

us. what we're seeing here behind us is all of us, a village coming together and saying we want the heart of our city to be strong again. >> mayor breeds action plan includes a $50 million bond measure on the november ballot to revitalize hallidie plaza. that's the public square at the entrance to powell street station. happening right now. the san francisco municipal transportation agency's board of directors meeting to discuss proposed changes to streets in the west portal neighborhood. that proposal was poorly received by community members when it was first unveiled. today, it's the board's turn to weigh in, with the goal of redoing the area near the west portal station. that project received greater attention after a family of four was killed by a driver who slammed into a nearby bus stop back in march. >> commuter confusion today in the east bay, smoke billowed from the caldecott tunnel when a pickup truck inside the left bore went up in flames just

before ten this morning. chp says the fire was inside bore two, and officers worked to get vehicles out of that tunnel. it created a traffic backup for drivers heading eastbound on highway 24 in orinda. a commuter told abc seven news. one problem was people abandoned their vehicles just outside the tunnel as all this commotion was going on. >> you just hear just loud bangs going off and you hear like people screaming at the far distance. there's a large vehicle pretty much engulfed in flames. >> you can see traffic in orinda was forced to turn around. no one was injured. the bore was closed for just under three hours. no word yet on what caused the ford f-150 to catch fire. >> coming up on abc seven news at four, the presidential election campaign heating up former president trump's bay area visit this week. opening day for oakland's newest professional baseball team. and we will take you there live. plus a very

oakland roots and the soul and the spiders. >> there's new teams, but we feel like there has to be pro baseball in oakland. >> brian kamal is a co-founder of the ballers. tuesday night's home opener at the historic richmond park is the first ever for this team. >> for us, this is about showing what a community can do when it works together to build something. >> our team is built by oakland volunteers, joined in over the past few days to get the field ready. the team has had a long stretch of away games, as work continued to bring the park up to the league's code. >> there is bleachers, the playground is fixed up, the streets are all fixed up around here. i'm really excited for baseball and more so though that the community will be able to use the park, year round. >> that also includes work done by the city. >> remember that northern california had the largest encampment right here across the street last april, the massive wood street homeless encampment was cleared out. >> sky seven shows what it looks like now. >> 4000 people into a residential neighborhood for home games is investment that we haven't seen before, so this is a very positive step for west

oakland, but it could also present some logistical challenges. >> fans are encouraged to use public transportation. there will be free shuttle service from the west oakland bart station, along with extra police, patrol and private security to monitor parking lots . >> we are doing what we can to ensure that people are able to make it here and feel safe in park, the team says. >> the goal is not to replace the a's. kamal wants to build a relationship between the team and its fan base, which he says will lead to a winning culture. >> our hope is that we can create a pipeline for players to the mlb and that ultimately a player who's got options might think, you know what, i want to be on the oakland ballers. this is actually my best path towards success in oakland, anser hassan. >> abc seven news and abc seven sports anchor casey pratt joins us live at raymond field, where the team is getting ready for tonight's first game. >> casey, what's the vibe like out there all year long? >> you know, larry, the vibe is interesting because they're still putting the finishing touches on this ballpark. they are still trying to get it all

ready for the fans who are arriving at 530. so gates open soon. and i just want to show you the incredible progress that you were just hearing about. they started this construction in march. this was a field that wasn't playable for little leaguers at that point in time. you can see they had to clear out the whole field. they had to put in brand new grass and turf. they had to build 4000 seats. they were racing through all of this at this historic park. this was a park where curt flood played baseball, where frank robinson played baseball. there is so much history here at raymond park. the oakland ballers are hoping to be the next chapter of that history. and just look at that incredible transfer formation. march 29th to today, june 4th. you can see a whole new playing surface seats and everything. so i'm going to bring in now a very special guest, jt snow, six time gold glover. you reached out to this team. you were inspired by what was happening and said,

but, today's the hottest day of the year. it may not be the hottest day for much longer, though. >> it felt that way outside. then i ran back inside. >> so the comfort of air conditioning? >> yes. spencer. christian, is it going to stay that way? well yes. and tomorrow may be even hotter in some spots. it's a brief heat wave, but it's a heat wave nonetheless. let's take a look at what's going on in our satellite radar composite image. we have a clouds out at sea, keeping their distance from the coastline. nonetheless, we still have that gust. vigorous breeze onshore, 36 mile per hour gusts at at sfo right now, 30mph at half moon bay and pretty breezy. just about everywhere. and the 24 hour temperature change is remarkable. it's about, 18 to 22 degrees warmer right now in most bay area locations than at this time yesterday. that's a significant warm up. let's take a look at current temperature readings. it's 71 here in san francisco was a few degrees

warmer earlier. we've got 77 apiece at oakland, at hayward, san jose, almost 90. 89 at both san jose and redwood city. 70 at half moon bay. looking northward. no marine layer at the golden gate right now. 98 degrees in santa rosa was 100 there a little bit earlier. petaluma 8696 at napa, 102 at fairfield and mid to upper 90s right now at livermore and concord. let's check out our forecast headlines. this excessive heat with concerns about fire will be with us again tomorrow, thursday and friday. the heat eases a bit. it will be cooler at the coast and over the weekend it will be still warm in some inland spots, but much more comfortable than the weather we have right now. looking at our overnight conditions. notice no marine layer is going to form and move at least onshore, and there'll be some little drizzly spots offshore between about 3 a.m. and about 7 a.m, but it will provide no cooling effect here for those of us who live on land overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid 60s in our inland areas closer to the bay, upper 50s to about 60. so

that's uncomfortably warm overnight weather for most of us. highs tomorrow a mid 60s at the coast, 73 here in san francisco. low to mid 80s around the bay shoreline. some bay shoreline locations may approach 90 degrees inland areas once again. upper 90s to low one hundreds, and there may be more locations tomorrow maxing out in triple digits than we had today. so the heat advisory remains in effect for the bay area. all locations except those near the coast of the bay, shoreline and the coast. this is in effect until midnight thursday night and over in solano county. it's an excessive heat warning. and of course, under these conditions, there is an increased risk of heat related illness. and if you're thinking of going to the beach, bear in mind that we have rough seas. a beach hazard statement, in effect until midnight thursday night, elevated wave heights and the risk of sneaker waves down at the coastline. here is the accuweather seven day forecast. one more day of this intense heat, and it's still going to be pretty hot inland on thursday with highs in the mid 90s. but you can see we'll have significant cooling at the coast

and around the bay shoreline on thursday. friday, more relief from the heat arrives over the weekend. it will be mild to warm with a very pleasant weekend. certainly compared with the heat we have right now. but early next weekend to midweek we can see another. we'll see another rise in temperatures. we're not predicting triple digits yet, but we could see mid to upper 90s. all right. >> going to be toasty. >> certainly is toasty. >> people taking off the clothes already. suntan lotion is a must. >> absolutely. >> yep. we will remain fully clothed. much to your relief, uh- hayward is celebrating pride month today. the city raised the progress pride flag at city hall. that progress flag adds additional colors to the rainbow flag. black and brown are for marginalized communities as well as those living with aids or hiv. blue, pink and white. that's for the transgender community. the city council made a proclamation at its meeting tonight, or will make one to reaffirm its commitment to the lgbtq plus community, and our coverage continues all month long, culminating with the 54th annual san francisco pride parade sunday, june 30th. you

the hush money trial in new york? >> probably a very pleasant one because he ignores any of his critics, including any of the protesters that might be out along the route or even at the outside. the event, because he's going to be bringing in not something blue, not something red, but something green. this uh- hosted event is a sellout. they're getting anywhere from 50 to $500,000 per person or per group. it's sold out in advance, so while san francisco has this image of being a solidly blue state, there is a lot of red money here. and silicon valley is coming out and opening up their checkbooks in big numbers for donald trump. >> interesting. i want to continue on that point in a moment. but first, we've heard mr. trump disparage the bay area quite a bit in the past. listen to him talking about nancy pelosi and san francisco back in 2019, san francisco, if you look at what's happening to her district, her district is going to hell with homeless, with that they're not taking care of with needles all over the street,

with tents, with people with sanitation. obviously, he's not going to be dealing with needles and any of that because he's going to be in private residences for the most part. but i want to follow up on the tech executives. a lot of them are are more aligned with mr. trump than you would think, necessarily because of business interests. >> that is right. and, you know, when it comes to politics, there are those that have ideologies and there are those that have the business side of it. and the business side of it is what fuels a lot of the money involved here. and tech in california is very interested in deregulation. they don't want the government interfering with them. they're interested in tax breaks and they want open markets here and abroad so that they can move their, their, their products and their factories to wherever they want them. the elon musk's of the world are almost libertarian. they like to think of themselves in, in like government hands off and trump is that package as

opposed to joe biden, who is heavily on the side of labor, heavily on the side of regulation. and so they say they may not agree with trump's personality or his ethics, but they do agree with his economic policies, and that's what's driving them. yeah. >> follow the money. right so this is kind of a touchy issue because republican candidates who are, you know, are looking at november. and how do they either embrace mr. trump or distance themselves, because a lot of his candidates that he's backed have lost. >> yes. and in california, there are a couple of tight races that could actually determine the outcome of the house of representatives, which could be key, especially if there's a disputed election. so what do they do? well, they're being quiet right now. and while, you know, you sit there and go, it might not be that easy. actually it is because most of the candidates, the republicans we're talking about are are in areas like the central valley or in, southern california. donald trump is going to san francisco, beverly hills and newport beach. he's not going to be in modesto
