it will be a while before we feel any relief. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. the beach looks nice, doesn't it? we're talking triple digit temperatures in some parts of the bay area. dangerous conditions for fires. new at six. a small one sparked in san jose this afternoon. you're looking at time lapse video of the smoke. it burned near highway 101 and capital expressway, an on ramp was briefly closed. no homes were threatened and we have team coverage on these conditions. >> abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley is in the hottest part of the bay area. >> that's in a moment. but first, let's hear from abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel with just how hot it's getting sandhya hot enough to get you to notice dan and let me show you the temperatures for today. >> these are the highs. we had one record as expected, santa rosa hit 100 degrees. previous record was 98, set back in 1949. it was 101 in napa, 103. in fairfield, you'll notice 99 in concord, 88 in oakland, 74 in san francisco and 89 degrees in san jose. but it was only 66 in half moon bay temperatures right

now inland, still in the 90s and 100, we do have heat advisories up until midnight thursday for the inland valleys and mountains shaded in orange. excessive heat warning for solano county until 8 p.m. thursday. the risk of heat related illnesses remains elevated, so you'll want to take it easy out there because we have another day of hot weather coming our way, at least for our inland communities. tomorrow i'll be back to let you know exactly when we'll get a break from all of this coming right up, umma. >> all right, sandhya, thank you. and now let's continue our live team coverage with abc seven news reporter leslie brinkley. she found people making the best of the high temperatures. hi, leslie. >> well, you have to do that. it's about 98 degrees out here in walnut creek. now, ■a hour or so ago, it was hotter. it feels like it's cooling off because there's a little bit of a breeze coming through. and we're at the larkey park swim center, where the swim teams are practicing behind us. open for recreational swimming next week, so looking

for relief from the heat, we decided to go right head on into it and we went out to brentwood to a cherry farm. >> today we'd like to try to just warn customers. sometimes we'll post on instagram, like just letting everybody know it's going to be a really hot day today. >> so let's go a couple of rows and look okay. >> the cherry pit in brentwood is one of nearly 60 u-pick farms out in far eastern contra costa county. the cherry season is in full swing despite temperatures hitting 100 degrees. >> a lot of our cherries are favorite cherries are kind of winding down a bit. we have a new variety that's a later season variety called lapin. the 100 degree heat is actually good for these late season cherries. >> it will accelerate the ripening so people can come pick them this weekend. close to 1000 people a day can come out to pick cherries on a single weekend day. >> it is really hot, so we always make sure customers come prepared that they have a lot of water, that, you know, they wear sunscreen and just take it easy

would you believe that in march, they actually started construction on this baseball facility? a field in which you couldn't even play little league games because of the conditions they bet on oakland. they started before final approvals in the span of a couple months. they got this ballpark ready for baseball. they expect 4100 fans here. it's going to be a sellout crowd. and just before we did this hit, i caught up with kelsey whitmore, the pitcher for the oakland ballers who made the team at tryouts. she actually became the first woman to ever pitch in a pioneer league game. no stranger to making history. all right, i'm here with kelsey whitmore of the oakland ballers. you're no stranger to history here, but first, let's just talk about the history of the ballers playing their first ever game in oakland tonight. i mean, what do you think the vibe is going to be like in this place? oh man i think it'll be crazy. i'm i'm really looking forward to it. i i hear the community and the fan base of oakland is so excited,

so stoked for it. and i know i can speak on behalf of my teammates. we're all really excited and pumped to play for the city of oakland and just for our fans. yeah. and just recently you made pioneer league history, first woman to pitch in a pioneer league game. what are those honors do for you? i know, i know, you work your whole life to achieve these goals, but like to be put on that level where you're now an inspiration for young girls and girls watching the game. what does that do for you? yeah, no, i mean, any way i can to, you know, motivate, inspire and encourage others to kind of chase after they want in this life is always definitely a goal of mine. and, i don't really do it for, i guess part of those outcomes. it's just it just comes with it, you know, when you do what you love, then good things happen when you do what you love. and i think you know, just being a part of this league, being a part of this team and this, this community and, you know, this fan base and the organization is just exciting. and so, i'm just looking forward to season and what the what the rest will come. >> a six game home opening series. >> now they're just beginning festivities behind me announcing. and there are fired up fans. and maybe some of them

have tried this almanac brewing oakland ballers beer. let's talk about team support a pioneer league team up and created out of nowhere now has their very own beer for fans to drink at the ballpark. it's going to be a lively atmosphere out here. dan and i can't wait to hear that. first let's go oakland chant i think it's going to be very, very loud. >> oh yeah, that's really cool. i have to say. all right. thanks, casey. >> well, it hasn't been easy to get the park ready for the first ever home opener. >> no. tonight, oakland's newest team will set out to build on an old tradition of professional baseball in the city. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> as the oakland athletics are on their way out, the oakland ballers are hoping to keep the tradition of professional baseball alive in the city. >> we just felt like, you know, we've got a good thing going with the oakland roots and the soul and the spiders. there's new teams, but we feel like there has to be pro baseball in oakland. >> brian carmel is a co-founder of the ballers. tuesday night's home opener at the historic raymond park is the first ever for this team.

>> for us, this is about showing what a community can do when it works together to build something. our team is built by oakland volunteers, joined in over the past few days to get the field ready. >> the team has had a long stretch of away games as work continued to bring the park up to the league's code. >> there's bleachers, the playground is fixed up, the streets are all fixed up around here. i'm really excited for baseball and more so though that the community will be able to use the park uh- year round. >> that also includes work done by the city. >> remember that northern california had the largest encampment right here across the street last april. >> the massive wood street homeless encampment was cleared out. sky seven shows what it looks like now 4000 people into a residential neighborhood for home games is investment that we haven't seen before, so this is a very positive step for west oakland, but it could also present some logistical challenges. fans are encouraged to use public transportation. there will be free shuttle service from the west oakland bart station, along with extra police, patrol and private

security to monitor parking lots. we are doing what we can to ensure that people are able to make it here and feel safe in park, the team says. the goal is not to replace the a's. carmel wants to build a relationship between the team and its fan base, which he says will lead to a winning culture. >> our hope is that we can create a pipeline for players to the mlb and that ultimately a player who's got options might think, you know what, i want to be on the oakland ballers. this is actually my best path towards success in oakland, anser hassan abc seven news, and we're following the story as firefighters continue putting out hot spots at that massive affordable housing complex destroyed in a big blaze. >> drone view seven captured what's left of the construction site still smoldering. as you can see after 24 hours since it started the fire at the six story complex in unincorporated redwood city is really just a terrible loss for affordable housing efforts. it would have had 179 affordable units, including some for unhoused

people. we heard from the contractor for the first time today about all of this, roberts ohbayashi tells us that workers tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers, but it just spread too fast. neighbors forced to evacuate worry they'll have nothing to come home to. >> flames were already over and the heat was so intense and embers falling. i was i was for sure like we're going to lose the house. >> fire investigators don't know yet how the fire started. the contractor says workers were not doing any hot work on the site. mercy housing, the partner of the project with san mateo county, says it does plan to rebuild. >> smoke billowed from the caldecott tunnel when a pickup truck inside the left bore went up in flames around ten this morning, created a big backup for traffic heading eastbound on 24 toward orinda, and drivers were forced to turn around. no one was injured. the bar was closed for just under three hours. no word yet on what caused that. ford f-150 to catch fire. >> all right, coming up here next. we're live with efforts to

francisco's union square, where mayor london breed talked today about her plan to draw more money, businesses and people to that area, which has been struggling. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn was there for the mayor's announcement and

joins us live in the newsroom with the story tonight. suzanne. >> dan, mayor breed says she wants to set aside millions of dollars from her new budget to help boost business along powell street and in union square. now, the mayor says even more money can help revitalize the broader downtown area if voters approve her november bond measure. >> we are back, folks. we're not coming back. we are back. >> san francisco mayor london breed says there are some exciting changes in store for union square and the yerba buena district. the areas have been hit hard by vacancies and retail store closures as part of her budget. the mayor says the city will invest $15 million. my budget investments include more active fashion, more nightlife downtown, more opportunities to turn areas of downtown and entertainment zones, and the vacant vibrant program in downtown san francisco, where property owners offer the space and free rent to pop up businesses for several months. the mayor wants to expand that.

>> we're going to be doing more of that along powell street and making more and more investments. we are really excited in the investments that the city is making to support this, to try to revitalize this, just even these three city blocks. >> the mayor also wants to make holiday plaza a destination. i introduced a bond that will be before the voters in november that will provide $50 million to invest in holiday plaza to make it more of an attractive destination. >> support this bond. >> imagine housing above a holiday plaza. imagine music, hear. >> the mayor also wants to expand cultural experiences like night markets, and bring a mixture of art, culture and commerce into union square and yerba buena district. >> so we know that we have the cultural cachet to help turn some parts of soma downtown into the next cultural attraction for san francisco. so with these investments, the mayor breed is going to be giving to the

filipino community. we want the world to start to think about soma pilipinas on the same vein as japantown and chinatown. when you come to san francisco. >> finally, mayor breed is talking about free parking on weekends, maybe even on some weekdays at various parking garages like ellis o'farrell. free parking is something this san francisco resident supports. >> yes, it's difficult to park here and it is expensive, so i think that would help. >> and the mayor hopes that things like free parking pop ups, even investing in a filipino cultural zone could help revitalize san francisco. supporters say it may even help bring new life to emporium center mall. now, that is all hinging on the san francisco city budget being passed. some of those changes could start this year live in the newsroom. suzanne fan, abc seven news. >> all right, suzanne, thank you. the mayor's pitch today is a culmination of several different efforts to improve downtown. abc seven news insider phil matier joins us for our 3 p.m. program called getting answers to put the plan into context. >> right now, she's trying to revitalize the downtown. the era

of the retail that we saw down there has changed those stores have to be filled with something. she is sort of scrambling around to try different things. this plan is a reaffirmation that of those things that sort of started and maybe didn't get off the ground, she wants them to stay and keep going. >> part of the mayor's plan relies on voters approving a new bond measure. now, phil tells us, voters seem to be more hesitant to give the green light for new spending, both in the bay area and across the state, for that matter. >> all right, let's get to our weather, because we really are heating things up around here. >> yeah, dangerous heat in some spots. meteorologist sanjay patel is here. sandhya. >> yeah. and dan and umma, you can definitely feel it out there. let me show you the 24 hour temperature change. it is 24 degrees warmer right now compared to yesterday. at this time in napa, 22 degree difference in livermore, 15 degrees warmer and san francisco 11. in san jose. in case you want to get out of the heat and

head to the coast, i do want to warn you of beach hazards. it's not only large breakers, 15 to 20ft coming up tomorrow and remaining up until about midnight friday. it's 8 a.m. tomorrow until midnight friday. there's also a risk of sneaker waves, so it's a rough northwesterly swell moving in our direction. just something to keep in mind. now let's talk about the evening forecast. still going to be hot at 7:00 inland in the 90s. you'll notice the temperatures dropping to the 80s by nine and then eventually to the 70s by 11 p.m. around the bay, warm 80s and then eventually 70s to 60s and along the coast. this is where you find that relief from the 60s to the 50s, a live view from pier 39. and you would think that the warm weather would be a big draw for visitors. but look at this. the sea lions are still packed in there right now. blue skies up above, high pressure in control of our weather. and as this ridge continues to move closer to us, we have another day of hot weather coming our way. what does this mean? there

they couldn't access their business line of credit. and abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow has been investigating exactly what's going on and is here with the story. melanie. >> dan and umma, when we first heard about this from one san francisco small business owner, we thought it might be an isolated incident, but it turns out a bunch of people are impacted and struggling with this migration, jamming up a dedicated phone line that's been set up to help assist clients. russell grover is a music lover who turned his passion into his profession. jiffy tickets a reseller of concert, theater and sporting tickets. >> i love music. i've been to over 1000 events, concerts, theater, sporting events. >> but grover says he feels like he's on the losing team. following jpmorgan chase's purchase of first republic bank. >> first republic bank customer for a long, long time, my favorite bank that i've ever banked with jp morgan chase tells seven on your side. >> last week it migrated 800,000 consumer and business deposit accounts to the jp morgan chase systems. some products, though, like business lines of credit, won't transition to jp morgan

chase systems until later this year. and therein lies the problem. >> the business line of credit, unfortunately, is in limbo right now. it is trapped inside first republic's online, yet nothing can ■be done online. with first republic. it hasn't migrated yet over to the chase side. so therefore i can't access it to take any money out or to pay it. >> grover can't just go into a chase branch either until the migration. he doesn't have a chase account number yet. >> i was in the bank last week and i ran into two other individuals, small business owners, that had the same exact issue. >> i did. the only option right now for customers like him is to call a support line and ask a representative to make a draw request. >> it's an hour and a half whole time to get to somebody in the business section for chase. >> right now, the bank tells abc seven news volumes are higher than usual, and it expects call wait times to continue to decline each day. >> in this instance, we had many bills due last week that i couldn't pay because i couldn't access the line of credit, right? >> grover says he's had to move thousands from his personal line

of credit to cover jiffy's bills. >> it's horrendous. it's terrible. customer service. >> after he reached out to seven on your side and we reached out to the bank, he says a team lead called him and told him the accounts would be migrated over in october, four months from now. >> this is david against goliath. i can't get any kind of answers and i was hoping that you guys could. >> and even with that additional information, ryan grover says he's opened up accounts with another bank, and he plans to apply for a line of credit there and close his chase account. jp morgan chase said it could not disclose to us exactly how many customers have business lines of credit that have been impacted to wait till october. >> months. >> well, at least online. so the option now is to call. but you heard those phone times are like 60 to 90 minutes. then you have to ask somebody to do your transaction for you. then you have to wait 1 to 2 business days versus what a click on line. you could do it instantaneously. it's a mess. >> all right. thanks mel. >> well, today the prosecution rested its case in the second trial for the man who attacked

sidewalk. they're angry because the dog's owners simply walked away, and now the parents are hoping those dog owners come forward. >> abc7 news reporter luz pena spoke to the boy's mother, who says her son was traumatized by the attack that sent him to the hospital. >> it was unprovoked and unexpected. these are the seconds leading up to a four year old getting attacked by a dog while walking home with his nanny in san francisco, uncertain, appeared out of nowhere, charged towards him, chased him and pinned him down and bit him really viciously. the nanny called the mom frantically as the four year old screamed and bled on the sidewalk. the dog owners can be seen blocking their unleashed dog from continuing to attack

the boy as they tried to get the dog under control. the nanny says the couple went back to their table to finish their meal, didn't apologize, and didn't leave their contact info >> yeah, i couldn't believe this happened to my son and was shocked and i was heartbroken and i wish it happened to me instead of him. >> it's been almost two weeks since the attack. the family wants to keep their identity private but decided to speak out, hoping to find the couple in the video. what's your message to the dog owners? >> this just cannot happen again. like it's not acceptable and these people need to be held accountable. >> a day after the attack, this mom went back to the area, searching for answers. finding the surveillance video. she turned to police. >> when i filed a police report, we didn't have anything, any information on the owner and i think they made it clear to not have high expectation with the investigation.

>> an sfpd said their attack is being investigated by the vicious and dangerous dog unit dogs that are that confident to chase run up to and bite without any provocation whatsoever. >> our dogs that have aggressive propensities and have demonstrated them in the past, usually the executive director of the san francisco animal care and control described the couple's actions as illegal. >> we have a leash law in this city, the dog should have been on a leash. second, the owners of the dog are legally obligated to give the victim or in this case, the nanny contact information name, phone number, address. that's the law. you have to give that information up. >> if the dog owners are found, the city will decide the dog's fate. in the meantime, this mom is hoping her efforts will protect others as she tries to explain this to her son, he asked me, why did the big white dog hurt me? >> and he absolutely broke my heart because he didn't do anything wrong in san francisco.

>> luz pena, abc seven news. >> new developments a suspect allegedly connected to the fatal shooting of an armored truck guard is now in custody. police say 28 year-old mo torres drove the car used in the robbery and shooting of 60 year-old john mendez at kaiser hospital in san leandro in september of 2022. authorities in southern california arrested torres last week. he faces felony robbery charges. the man accused of killing mendez was arrested back in october of 2022. he reportedly worked with the victim and was familiar with his route. >> tonight, the government has rested its case after four days of testimony and david depapes state trial for the attack on paul pelosi, he was already convicted in federal court. the defense in this state trial will begin their arguments on friday. abc seven news reporter stephanie sierra has the latest now from court reporter a jury of seven men and five women listened to a revoiced transcript of david depape being

questioned during his federal trial. >> in the transcript, an admission of the many targets the 44 year old had on his so-called hit list after his planned kidnaping of then-house speaker nancy pelosi. some on that list included adam schiff, mike pence, bernie sanders, hunter biden, gavin newsom and george soros. cross-examination from the defense revealed an article was found in a pabst garage titled is george soros carrying all the work of hitler? it also detailed his online history, leading up to the attack, which included searches of brutal crime scenes including the grisliest crime scene photos from 1920 new york city. legal expert adam gassner weighs in. >> i mean, the facts are actually pretty clear. so i think that they they really need to have something that a juror can hang their hat on. >> testimony also included depapes admission that he planned to use nancy pelosi to lure his target. one a

the guy we expected. the niners have signed running back christian mccaffrey to a two year extension that will keep him in red and gold through the 2027 season. mccaffrey had no guaranteed money left on his previous contract, so this solves that issue. opens up some salary cap space as well. the way they reconfigured the money, it also raises mccaffrey's average annual salary to $19 million a year, which is extremely high for the running
