mark in fairfield, upper 90s, concord, livermore, uh- san jose, 93 and gilroy, 96 degrees. there is end in sight to this heat wave. i'll be back to let you know when coming right up. >> dan, with just that graphic looks hot. >> yes, i know, all right. >> well, with this brutal heat, there is no doubt pools will be packed this week. lots of kids looking to cool down, but many swimming spots are short on lifeguards. it's a problem out of the pandemic, made more concerning as the cdc finds that accidental drownings are on the rise around the country. abc seven news reporter lauren martinez is poolside tonight looking at efforts to combat this lifeguard shortage. >> whether it's taking a swimming class or swimming for fun, some bay area pools are pushing to hire more lifeguards at flying fish swim school in mountain view. they're making an effort to remarket the position as not just a summer job. >> we have plenty of open positions now. we're always looking. we are a year round swim school, so we are always

looking for lifeguards to continue with us and stay on board. >> jennifer winter hatch is a lifeguard and she said to be certified is not cheap. >> about 40 hours worth of classroom and in water training. the cost is high. it can be anywhere between 3 to $400 for the class. the certification only lasts two years. >> here at flying fish swim school, they incentivize lifeguards by reimbursing them to those who can commit six months to a year, according to the american lifeguard association, the pandemic disrupted training programs, typically, about 300,000 new candidates are trained every year, and that number is now much less. >> it is a significant issue. we want our pools to be safe. our community deserves that. >> sarah shea is the parks superintendent with santa cruz county. >> yes. we do not have enough lifeguard swim instructors to accommodate the need of the amount of individuals who want

automatically shut down and new crossers will be deported. officials say. we are at that threshold, triggering tonight's closure. biden's action also outlines when asylum applications can resume and some exceptions to these rules right now to your voice and your vote. >> the presidential campaign trails are running through the bay area this week, vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump are stopping in san francisco one day after one another. we'll begin with a visit by the presumptive republican nominee, uh. mr. trump will be in town thursday as part of a fundraising tour, his first since last week's conviction on 34 felony charges. tech billionaire david sax and his wife are hosting the event with a venture capitalist in pacific heights. previous bay area campaign stops have not gone according to plan for the former president. remember these pictures? his trek through fencing and dirt to avoid protesters during a 2016 campaign stop in burlingame?

wearing a prison shirt. organizers are planning to set sail with the bird from fisherman's wharf on thursday, passing by alcatraz and the marina green. vice president kamala harris will be back in the bay area tomorrow for a fundraiser for manny manny's cafe in san francisco's mission district is hosting this event, though they're moving it to a bigger venue. tickets run from $500 to 25,000 apiece. >> we make it our mission every day to build a better bay area and finding those breakthrough. those are the things we love celebrating. so tonight we're finding one in the business world. for the first time in more than a decade, california now leads the u.s. in the number of fortune 500 companies, and the lion's share of those are right here in the bay area. a total of 44 of the nation's largest companies, and therefore workforces, are headquartered in the bay area. abc seven news reporter tim johns shows what's driving california's stellar performance. >> in a list published tuesday, fortune magazine announcing that california was home to 57 of the

nation's 500 largest companies, a higher number than every other state in the country. the news getting the attention of governor gavin newsom, who took to x to brag about the state's lead over rivals texas and florida. >> and it doesn't surprise me because, you know, it's such an important place to do business. >> jim wunderman is the head of the bay area council, he says. of the 57 companies statewide, 44 of them are based here in the bay area, with the vast majority being tech related. >> companies need to be here. the most powerful companies, the largest market cap companies are here. >> experts say the bay area's economic ecosystem is unique, with everything from high levels of investment, innovation and a highly qualified workforce. >> there was another release that san franciscans have the highest level of educated employees in in the country, and that's another piece where academia is so important. >> one of the biggest contributors to california's performance was the explosion of artificial intelligence companies. nearly all of the big

ai companies are based right here in the bay area. and with the technology still in its infancy, many believe that that explosion of growth is just the beginning. >> there's a lot of fuel to burn here, so we can go to the mature level of the ai. and if the ai technology is become one day become mainstream, then there is another technology you can show up here in silicon valley and start the cycle again. >> ahmed benaissa is a tech guru and professor at san jose state university. >> he says despite the tough times, both the bay area and california went through following the pandemic, he's optimistic about the state long term. >> california goes through cycles. it might go down a little bit few years, but it goes back to the top immediately after california, new york and texas tied for second place with 52 companies each in san francisco. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> our next breakthrough takes you to san francisco's castro district. the castro theater sign has been dark for several years, and the historic venue is going through renovations.

that's changed. the sign is all lit up again. we saw one post on social media where someone said the last time they could remember seeing the sign and marquee lights was 2016. we heard from the theater operator, another planet entertainment, which says it is going to hold an official relighting event on june 19th that coincides with the opening of the frameline film festival and our final building, a better bay area breakthrough is a new market that's coming to san francisco's bayview hunters point neighborhood. >> it's opening tomorrow on third street and will serve low income residents called the district ten community market, who will provide free groceries to those who qualify. there is plenty of fresh produce provided by local growers. there's a good reason for this location. the usda says the area is a food desert. that means people have limited access to healthy food and grocery stores as well. >> now to oakland, where the ballers home opener marked a breakthrough for the community. you know, it hasn't been easy to get the park ready for the first ever home opener. they've been working very hard since march to

turn raymond park into a baseball stadium, and it paid off tonight with a sellout. >> 4100 people filled the stands. abc seven sports is casey pratt caught up with mayor shengtao at the game? >> i'm at the oakland ballers game with oakland mayor shang tao, and just looking at how quickly this came together. when you bet on oakland, look what happens right when you bet on oakland and you're a good partner. >> look what happens. you get results. >> yeah, they put $1.6 million into this ballpark. they took care of it. they even started before final approvals. they really did bet on oakland. and this is a space that can now be used by the community. so how heartening is it for you to see how quickly this came together? >> you know, a year and a half ago, i came into office as oakland's 51st mayor. there was the largest northern california encampment right across the street. this park wasn't even a park. it was not usable, you know? and so what we really did was we housed all the people who wanted the housing over across the street. now we're having affordable housing go up over 100 units. and this park, it is electric defying. look at this.

people accused of sex crimes over the past five years. san jose police made these arrests as part of the department's annual warrant sweep from february through april. they arrested 46 suspects with outstanding warrants, all are accused of sex crimes ranging

from misdemeanors to felony sexual assault of a minor. >> a lot of these sexual assault survivors, obviously are going through a lot of trauma, dealing with trauma and so the healing process will be a lengthy one. so hopefully with our detectives work with the sexual assaults investigative unit, they will have some closure and peace of mind. >> the 46 arrests are more than double that of last year's sweep. >> developing news with the pro-palestinian encampment on the uc santa cruz campus that saw law enforcement move in early friday, and an update today from the chancellor, she said the encampment was disrupting services on campus. it was also a safety issue. she says more than 100 people were arrested and the protesters did hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage to the campus. a post from the uc santa cruz students for justice for palestine is drawing criticism after it backed the burning of a uc berkeley police vehicle. the jewish community relations council responded, saying anti-israel protests are taking a, quote, dark and dangerous turn. now to a story we have

been following closely a san jose company's proposal to allow the psychedelic drug mdma to be used to treat ptsd was rejected today by an fda panel. advisers cited flawed data, questionable research conduct and potential risks from the drug as reasons. while the fda is not required to follow the panel's recommendation, it is expected to make a final decision by august. lycos, the company behind the work, says it plans to work with the fda to address the panel's concerns. >> we want to show you some incredible video a toddler with her family on a drive through safari had a run in with a giraffe that had her in freefall. here's what happened. two year old paisley toten was in the back of a pickup with her mom this weekend, riding through a wildlife preserve in texas. they were feeding the animals when a hungry giraffe grabbed her shirt and lifted her into the air. fortunately, mom was right there to catch her. >> as soon as she went up, her mom just yelled, hey! like hey! and the giraffe just kind of let

go. my left. >> it got your shirt? yeah. was it scary? oh, what a sweetie. >> paisley is okay and now has a stuffed giraffe as a souvenir. the wildlife center appears to have changed its rules, now no longer allowing people to ride in the back of pickup trucks, sonoma county's board of supervisors voted today to end its avian flu emergency. >> the outbreak was first detected at two poultry farms last november. the virus spread and ended up affecting 11 commercial producers in sonoma county. as a result, 1.2 million birds were euthanized. now, california's agriculture department says avian flu has not been detected at the companies since february 1st. so with the emergency order lifted, there are plans to repopulate the farms in the east bay. >> martial arts icon bruce lee is getting an intersection named in his honor by the city of oakland. it will come with a plaque as well as a broad at broadway and garnett street. the city council took up the resolution today and approved it. lee opened up a martial arts
