live now at 6:00. another hot day on the horizon across the bay area, and things could be even warmer than yesterday for some of you. drew is here with just how high the mercury will be climbing today, and when we will finally see a cool down, then i warning employees are calling their own industry

reckless and secretive. >> they want more ways to voice their concerns and the mayor's latest push to breathe new life into parts of san francisco. >> the action to liven up union square in yerba buena that could include free parking. good morning. >> it is wednesday, june 5th. >> i'm going to start the check of our forecast with drew. yes, we're tracking that heat advisory again. >> records are likely this afternoon for another day. day two of our heat wave. so we'll take to our east bay hills camera. not a cloud from this vantage point. in fact, clear skies everywhere we have sunshine. you can see current conditions no matter where you are. you have that clear sky early on, we have that temperature map that shows you most of us are quite mild this morning, many of us starting out in the low and mid 60s at this hour. and this is the launching pad to get us into that hot afternoon. once again, the heat advisory has actually been expanded to include the santa cruz mountains now, and that just means we continue to find the increased risk of heat related illnesses over the next couple of days. so look at this inland. here we go again. it's

going to get hot. we're topping out at 101 in some of our hottest cities today. and that heat effect is cumulative meaning it adds on day after day. so you want to take those precautions. you do want to drink lots of liquids and find frequent breaks in the shade in the ac. today, around the bay shoreline, it's another warm one, mid 80s to the low 90s. and if you're going to the coast to get some relief, it will feel nice. just be aware that we do have a beach hazard statement along the entire coastline for the increased risk of sneaker waves with our active ocean current. let's say hi to amanda. see the commutes going this morning. >> good morning drew. here at the top of the hour. we're going to take a look at drive times. the good news really nothing in your way. this morning except for that typical slowdown you see there from tracy to dublin at 52 minutes. otherwise walnut creek to 580 12 minutes and then six minutes to get from highway four to walnut creek. >> amanda, the defense in david depape state criminal trial will begin their arguments tomorrow. depape is already sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for the attack on speaker emerita nancy pelosi's husband. now, the government just rested its case

yesterday after four days of testimony, a jury of seven men and five women listened to a revoiced transcript of david depape being questioned during his federal trial. in that transcript, there was an admission of the targets the 44 year old had on his so-called hit list after his planned kidnaping of then house speaker nancy pelosi. some people on that list included adam schiff, mike pence, bernie sanders, hunter biden, gavin newsom and george soros. >> i mean, the facts are actually pretty clear. so i think that they they really need to have something that a juror can hang their hat on. >> that legal expert says despite the extraordinary amount of evidence, it's unlikely to pap will get life in prison if convicted on these state charges . >> the 2024 presidential campaign returns to the bay area this week. donald trump brings his campaign to san francisco tomorrow. today, vice president kamala harris arrives to fundraise for the biden campaign. abc seven news

reporter gloria rodriguez is here with more on that. gloria. >> good morning. reggie, manny's cafe in san francisco's mission district is hosting the fundraiser for vice president kamala harris, but they're moving it to a bigger venue. vice president harris appeared on jimmy kimmel last night. she talked about contraceptives and abortion rights. >> to tell that woman that person, you don't have a right to make a decision about what happens to your body next. it's immoral. and i think most of us agree one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government should not be telling her what to do with her body >> and the vice president also talked about the guilty verdict in former president trump's criminal hush money trial. harris says that she believes the reality is cheaters don't like being caught and being held accountable. as far as today's

fundraiser, tickets run from $500 to $25,000 live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. developing news. the uc system is taking its fight against striking grad students a step further. the university of california officials sued the students union, saying the current work stoppage violates the no strike provisions in its labor contract, according to the chronicle. they say it will cause irreparable harm to the university if this continues. the suit was filed monday, the same day the state's public employment relations board denied the ucs request to halt the strikes for the second time this morning. we're following up on the pro-palestinian encampment on uc santa cruz campus. we first showed you this video friday on abc seven mornings. that's when law enforcement moved in to clear demonstrators from that space. the chancellor now says the encampment was disrupting services on campus and was also a safety issue. she says more than 100 people were arrested and the protesters did hundreds of thousands of dollars in

damage to the campus. a post from the uc santa cruz students for justice for palestine is drawing criticism after it backed the burning of this uc berkeley police vehicle. the jewish community relations council responded, saying anti-israel protests are taking a, quote, dark and dangerous turn. >> free parking on the weekend ends, maybe even some weekdays. that's one of san francisco mayor london breeds newest ideas to get more people downtown. yesterday, she also announced she's designating $50 million of her budget to invest in union square and the yerba buena district, and she reveals she wants to expand the vacant to vibrant program. that's where property owners offer free rent to pop up businesses. for a few months now. these ideas are something local merchants are excited about. >> it is so important and right now our downtown town needs all of us. what we're seeing here behind us is all of us. a village coming together and saying we want the heart of our

city to be strong again. >> breeds action plan includes a $50 million bond measure on the november ballot to revitalize holiday plaza. that is a public square at the entrance to powell street station. >> current and former employees at two major artificial intelligence companies are sending a warning about their own industry. amanda, they've come together to publish a letter calling for more transparency. >> reggie, those employees describe the ai industry as reckless and secretive. and in an open letter, they say a.i. companies have weak obligations to share nonpublic information about the capabilities of their systems with governments. the letter calls for a.i. companies to stop blocking employees from openly criticizing them. it also asks for anonymous ways for workers to voice their concerns to regulators. last year, two senators released a bipartisan framework for regulating ai. >> we have a responsibility here now to do our part to make sure

that this new technology, which holds a lot of promise but also peril, actually works for the american people. >> if we let this horse get out of the barn, it will be even more difficult to contain than social media. >> but more than nine months after the announcement of that framework, not a single federal law governing a.i. has been passed. in response to the new letter, openai said, quote, we agree that rigorous debate is crucial given the significance of this technology and will continue to engage with governments, civil society and other communities around the world. openai recently said it will establish a new committee to make recommendations about safety. back to you. >> thanks, amanda. this morning, phone service is back up and running after an issue left millions of customers unable to make calls to other networks. the outage affected at&t and verizon customers in 24 states. at&t insists that calls to 911 were not impacted, but this is

the second major outage in recent months. at&t gave customers a $5 credit after that outage back in february. the company blamed that one on a technical error while it was expanding its network. the fcc is investigating both outages. >> temperatures are hitting the triple digits in some parts of the east bay today. for some people, that means going to pick cherries. i'm not sure why, but they are. it seems like it would be a hot day to do it, but the cherry pit in brentwood is one of nearly 60 u-pick farms out in far eastern contra costa county. the cherry season is in full swing right now. the temperatures will accelerate the ripening of the cherries by the weekend. close to 1000 people can come out to pick cherries on a single weekend day. >> it is really hot, so we always make sure customers come prepared that they have a lot of water, that you know, they wear sunscreen and just take it easy while they're here. >> splash pads will be popular spots again today. this is video from one in brentwood. you can see kids darting in and out of

the water having fun. also taking their shoes off. we have a lot of shoe video to show you and ice cream to eat. if you don't have air conditioning and need relief from the heat, cooling centers will be open across the bay area. many local counties suggest visiting libraries and community rec centers. there are more than a dozen suggested spots in santa clara county that includes three in san jose that will be open late. that's until 9 p.m. they are camden community center, emma prusch farm park and roosevelt community center. that one is also pet friendly. >> that's some good information because we are going to find those temperatures again. again, very warm to hot this afternoon. a live look at our okay camera this morning. and you can see it is sunny out there. current temperature. it's mild at 60 degrees right now. in fact a lot of us are in the 60s if not low 70s. and some of our warmer cities right now. so today's forecast, as you look at the inland areas, we will have full sunshine about 100 degrees this afternoon. it is going to be about 20 degrees above average for daytime highs around the bay shoreline. it is warm to hot

back into the 80s. we go and then along the coast we'll have sunny skies and temperatures a lot cooler in the 60s. so looking at highs around the region today, we're in day two of our heat wave. heat advisories are still in effect. we'll go to 99 in concord today, 101 in antioch and fairfield, 93 in napa, 99 in santa rosa, 93 in san jose, a warm, 83 in oakland, 78 in the city and the coast. looking quite nice in the 60s. but if you are going to the coast to get some relief, just be aware of beach hazards. statement in effect today and tomorrow could see breakers up to 15 to 20ft and the risk of sneaker waves as well. looking at your weather wellness today, air quality is moderate. pollen levels are moderate as well. uv index a ten out of 11. that is a very high kumasi. >> thank you drew. still ahead, the construction project almost done at sfo that could help you fly out more quickly than tense moments. outside the u.s. embassy in lebanon, a gunman attacking the building overnight

the live desk with how thousands of residents will be benefiting from it. >> amanda kumasi the district ten community market will provide free groceries to low income residents who qualify, according to the examiner. they

must meet certain criteria, including receiving public assistance, having children in the house or having a diet related illness. residents must live in the sunnydale, visitacion valley, potrero hill, or bayview hunters point neighborhoods. local growers will provide plenty of fresh produce. it will be open the first wednesday of every month to start, the city has plans to ramp up operations to as many as four days a week. city officials hope to serve up to 4500 people a month by this time next year, the market will be on third street between revere and casada avenues. t's good reason for this location. the usda says the area is a food desert that means people have limited access to healthy food and grocery stores. the city says it plans to bring this model to other neighborhoods, also experiencing food insecurity back to you. kumasi >> thanks, amanda. a gunman has been captured after a shootout outside the u.s. embassy in lebanon overnight. the lebanese military says its soldiers shot the man, who is only described

as a syrian national. he was taken to the hospital. his motives are not clear, but local media published photos that appeared to show the man wearing a vest with the words islamic state in arabic. the us embassy says none of its staff was hurt. a live look at sfo right now. some good news if your summer vacation involves a flight out of sfo. a months long construction project that's been causing widespread delays is coming to an end a bit earlier than projected, airport officials tell our media partners at the sf standard work on the 28 left taxiway will wrap up no later than june 21st, which is about a week earlier than originally planned. officials say once the runway reopens, the only cause of delays will be weather related. the stanley cup finals start this saturday right here on abc seven. but what's even better is the first ever stany cup. this is going to feature adoptable dogs from animal shelters and rescues from across the country. now this is live who's representing the san jose sharks

bay. a moderate to major heat risk continues away from the coast. that moderate risk is this orange color. you see, which is encompassing a huge portion of the region. then the deep reds. that's where we find the major heat risk and just know that a heat effect is cumulative, meaning those days of heat stack up on your body. and so day two is tougher than day one. so you do want to stay hydrated, find ways to beat the heat, get in the shade, get into the ac, hit the coast. maybe to find those cooler temperatures. highs in the south bay 91 in santa clara, 98 in morgan hill. go to 90. in cupertino, santa cruz, it is warm, 83 degrees with that beach hazard statement along the coastline to the peninsula we go 83 san mateo, 90 hot degrees in redwood city, 84 in palo alto. but we'll keep it in the 60s with sunshine for half moon bay and pacifica across the city today, we'll see about a 10 degrees spread from the sunset to downtown. the coast stays cool in the 60s, much warmer downtown in the financial district will hit about 78 for a daytime high in the north bay. it is hot, 93 in napa, 99 in santa rosa, 92 in

novato, 91 in san rafael, the east bay. it is another warm one. 83 in oakland, 89 in fremont, we'll go to 87 in orinda and inland. this is where we have the major heat risk, because these temperatures are close to about 100 degrees in most cities this afternoon. this evening we hang on to a lot of this warm air. so it's a mild evening. we'll keep those clear skies. we do remain pretty fog free overnight tonight. so tonight a little bit cooler than we were this morning. this morning we were in the 60s. tonight more of us will drop into the 50s to get some more relief from this heat. here's the accuweather seven day forecast a heat alert today with widespread relief coming our way by friday. fog returns in the morning on saturday with seasonable temperatures over the weekend. the weekend is looking fantastic and then warmer weather starts to move in here early next week, guys. >> thanks, drew. now we're checking in with ginger zee who's live with what's coming up on gma. good morning ginger wanting to you reggie and kumasi nice to be with you. >> so coming up here on gma we'll start with the latest on

pieces of space debris in the east bay. martial arts icon bruce lee is getting an intersection named in his honor by the city of oakland. it will come with a plaque as well as well at broadway and garnett street. the city council took up the resolution yesterday, and approved it. lee opened up a martial arts school in oakland in 1964. at that very intersection. it's considered the birthplace of the martial art form jeet kune do, jeet kune do. excuse me. lee's bay area roots are extensive. he was born and raised in san francisco, next to 630 dueling presidential campaigns headed for the bay area. what you can expect today when vice president harris arrives and the plans in place for donald trump's high priced fundraiser tomorrow and oakland's newest sports team kicks off its home season in front of a big crowd at raimondi park. in fact, the ballers drew almost as many fans as the a's just a few miles away. >> wow. yikes wow. and it was warm out there. so those fans are certainly fighting the heat.

have moderate air quality out there today. and just be aware that it's another day of very hot temperatures away from the coast. even right now, you look at numbers currently and we're well into the 60s in most areas, 74 right now in brentwood. so this mild start will lead to another hot afternoon on the way. here's a look at the heat advisories. it actually has been expanded now to include the santa cruz mountains. so most of us will be dealing with the intense heat. the lone exception is the immediate coastline, which will feel quite comfortable. but inland today. this is why we have the advisories in effect for another day. temperatures take off quickly. we're heading into the upper 90s to the lower one hundreds later on this afternoon, around the bay shoreline. it's warm, full sunshine, mid 80s. some spots could even get into the low 90s once again. this afternoon, and then along the coast. certainly feels a lot better. will be in the low and mid 60s. but be aware we do have a beach hazard statement in effect along the coastline for the increased risk of sneaker waves the next two days. hi, amanda. >> hi, drew. not a bad commute for this wednesday morning here at 631. a look at drive times

planning to protest her visit today. live in the studio. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thanks, gloria. vice president harris not the only one campaigning in the bay area this week. former president donald trump will also be making a fundraising stop in san francisco. he'll be in town tomorrow for a fundraising tour, his first since last week's conviction on 34 felony charges. tech billionaire david sacks is going to be one of the co-hosts of this event. sacks lives in pacific heights. previous bay area campaign stops haven't gone according to plan for the former president. you may remember his trek through fencing and dirt to avoid protesters during a 2016 campaign stop in burlingame. >> oh boy, i felt like i was crossing the border. actually tickets to tomorrow's event range from $50,000 to ha million. >> abc seven news insider phil matier explains that even in deep blue san francisco, it's a solid atm for republicans. >> people forget that about, you

back in 2018, the chicken circled alcatraz wearing a prison shirt or organizers. there it is. organizers are planning to set sail with the bird from fisherman's wharf, passing by alcatraz and marina green. we're following the story as firefighters continue to put out hot spots after a massive fire at an affordable housing complex in redwood city, drone view seven captured what's left of it. the area was still smoking more than 24 hours later. it's a big loss for affordable housing efforts. the complex would have had 179 affordable apartments, including some for unhoused people, the contractor said. workers tried to put out the fire with extinguishers, but it just spread too fast. neighbors forced to evacuate worried that they'd have nothing to come home to. >> flames were already over and the heat was was so intense and embers falling. i was i was for sure like, we're going to lose the house. >> fire investigators don't know how the fire started. the

contractor says workers were not doing any hot work on the site. that's work that involves gas or welding equipment that can easily start fires. mercy housing, the partner of the project with san mateo county, says it plans to rebuild the family of a little boy who was a victim of a vicious dog attack on a san francisco sidewalk, is hoping that the dog's owners will come forward. >> surveillance video captured the scary incident in the marina. here it is. so you can see the four year old boy he's walking with his nanny when that big white dog ran toward him and attacked. now the owners were dining outside. they got up. they kept the dog from continuing to attack the child. the nanny says the couple eventually went back to their table to finish their meal. they didn't apologize and they didn't leave any contact information. the boy ended up having to get five stitches. abc seven news spoke with his mom and the executive director of sf animal care and control. >> he asked me, why did the big white dog hurt me? and he absolutely broke my heart

because he didn't do anything wrong. >> we have a leash law in this city. the dog should have been on a leash. second, the owners of the dog are legally obligated to give the victim or in this case, the nanny contact information, name, phone number, address. that's the law. you have to give that information out. >> now, if the owners are found, the city will decide what will happen to the dog. >> celebrations underway ahead of tomorrow's 80th anniversary of d-day. today, heads of state and world war two veterans are gathering in france. president joe biden arrived in paris this morning. few of the veterans who served in that war are still alive. the survivors are around 100 years old. d-day marks the beginning of the end of world war two, when the u.s. and its allies stormed the beaches of normandy in 1944. it honors those who fought the war and ultimately won peace. >> it's hard to describe, you know, all these people never think they'd recognize old

accusing a man of murdering her roommate. knox was convicted of the 2007 murder, but was exonerated in 2015. at the time, she accused the owner of a bar where she worked of killing her 21 year old british roommate. she's not serving time, as she's already spent four years in jail for the original sentence. >> alameda county prosecutors are warning people about a real estate scam. according to the chronicle, a scammer pretended to be a property owner to swindle a real estate agent out of $560,000. officials say the scammer called the agent, claiming he was dying of cancer and needed to sell a lot in oakland, but the escrow officer researched the property and contacted the actual owner, who said the lot was not for sale.

this is where temperatures could reach some record highs. yesterday we had some hot spots. about 100 degrees will likely find some pockets of intense heat again today. so highs today are heat. advisory continues for another day. we're day two of a three day heat wave today. 90 in cupertino, 93 in san jose, 98 in morgan hill, 97 in los gatos along the peninsula will go to 83 in san mateo, but hotter in redwood city at 90 degrees 86, in los altos. the coast in the low and mid 60s, with full sunshine now across the city today we'll have a pretty wide range. we'll find those cooler temperatures in the 60s close to the ocean, but downtown in the financial district, much warmer at 78 degrees 79 for south san francisco in the north bay. hot today 99 cloverdale. same in santa rosa, 96 in sonoma, we'll go to 91. in san rafael, the east bay. it is warm with that moderate heat risk. 83 in oakland but 89 in castro valley. the same in fremont and then inland. we have the major heat risk because 101 in fairfield, 100 in pittsburg, 98 in
