>> and i'm j.r. stone. it's another hot one today. absolutely. >> we have team coverage for you. abc seven news reporter lena howland is sweltering in the east bay. >> we begin with spencer christian with more on the fire and the heat. okay, j.r, larry trying to get a closer look right now at the fire right there is off silverado trail on the eastern side of napa valley, up around saint helena, which is at 102 degrees right now. it's probably hotter than that because that was the 3:00 reading, waiting for the 4:00 readings to update. and as you might guess, under these, this excessive heat, our systems here are not up to date as they should be. they're sort of malfunctioning. but i can tell you that the wind has been generally light in that area. but there must be occasional gusts now near the fire because these fires generate their own gusts at the base of the fire. so we know it's over 100 degrees. there we know the relative humidity is low, and of course the wind uh- last wind report there was about 11mph. but that was the steady one. that was not the gusts. so as you're looking at this uh- panel temperatures right now, you see we have several locations right

now above 100 degrees 104 at brentwood, 101 at fairfield and concord. we've got numerous locations in the 90s, even around the bay shoreline, right now it's well over 80 degrees, close to 90 in some spots. the winds are generally not very strong, but near the coast they're a little bit breezier and up in parts of the north bay, it's a little bit breezier as well. we still have our our advisory, in effect, our heat advisory for all of the bay area now except the bay shoreline and the coast, and now includes the santa cruz mountains as well. that's in effect until midnight tomorrow night. and for solano county, it's an excessive heat warning that's also in effect until tomorrow night. and as we look at what's coming our way tomorrow, not a lot of relief in the inland areas is still going to be hot there. with mid-nineties to low one hundreds, there will be some cooling near the coast and the bay tomorrow. i'll give you a closer look at the fire conditions and how, when we can expect some relief from this heat a little bit later. larry and j.r, thanks so much, spencer. now to the east bay, where we find abc seven news reporter lena howland. >> it looks like lena has found

a little bit of shade. >> spencer just said it was 104 in brentwood. does it feel 104? >> oh my gosh, it feels like 115 out here right now. it is hot, hot hot. our temperature gauge actually says it's only really 101 degrees here in brentwood. but that hasn't stopped a number of families out from coming out and enjoying some of this sunshine. but whether it's out here at a splash pad, on a boat, out on a hike, we did talk to fire officials about what you should be doing now to protect yourself during this heat wave. during the bay area's first heat wave of 2020, for more than 120, anglers from across the country have set sail in oakley, hoping to make their biggest catch of the year. >> i'm from kentucky, western kentucky. it does get warm there, but we don't very often hit triple digits. >> ellen gray is director of the major league fishing western toyota series. the series kicked

off at six wednesday morning when anglers were encouraged to hydrate early and often, and to wear protective clothing. >> if we don't take care of the fishermen and the resources being the fish, then we can't have fish and tournaments because, he says, all fish caught here are released back into the water every night. if they bring in, we'll call it an expired fish, which they rarely do. they're penalized. >> meanwhile, people all over the east bay spent the day trying to avoid the heat. >> it's super hot today. i was just trying to. >> sorry. >> let me turn down this ac. i have it on blast because i'm just preparing for the heat. it's already at like 90 degrees. >> still, it wasn't too hot for 82 year old heriberto lopez out of antioch to go on his daily 2 to 3 mile walk and theo great, a pretty great walking no matter what. >> it's a sign of cold, but triple digits in brentwood are keeping crews from the contra costa county fire protection district on edge. >> we are in those prime, i hate to say it this way, but those

good fire conditions for vegetation, as far as vegetation fires are concerned. >> already seeing smaller fires earlier this week, fire officials are asking hikers to use common sense and take plenty of water to avoid getting stuck and tying up their resources. >> if that gets priority over the environment, over ■the fire. so we have to prioritize those responses. so if you call us and you're up on the mountain, we're coming to get you. and it could be quite a few people coming to get you. and that takes away from a vegetation response. >> fire officials are also reminding families to pack plenty of sunscreen, wear protective clothing, limit your time outside when you can, and also remember to bring plenty of water with with you at all times. for now. reporting live in brentwood, lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, lena, try to stay cool out there as people seek relief from the heat. a warning for beach goers. the national

weather service has issued a beach hazard statement for today and tomorrow, because waves of up to 20ft are possible. this is video from half moon bay, taken about 20 minutes ago. the beach hazard statement covers all of the bay area and stretches from cloverdale to monterey. it does not include the santa cruz coast, however. now to another kind of hazard heat and fireworks. >> with the 4th of july coming up, hayward police are sending out a warning to anyone thinking about using fireworks in their city. the department says anyone caught shooting off fireworks can face up to $50,000 in fines. in addition, property owners where the activity takes place will be fined. >> now to the race for the white house. and today, vice president kamala harris was in the bay area for several fundraisers. she was met with protesters in both oakland and san francisco. abc seven news reporter luz pena was in the mission district, where the vice president made her second and final stop today. we demand a cease fire. >> demonstrators took over sidewalks and streets as vice president kamala harris made her

fundraising in the bay area is crucial, according to menlo college political science professor melissa michaelson. >> we are a bipartisan piggy bank, both democrats and republicans. >> trump had 9% of the votes in san francisco during the 2016 presidential election against hillary clinton. on thursday. tech leaders will host him in the city. >> there's this huge battle happening between progressives and conservatives, republicans and democrats, and there's all these people are like, i want to be part of what's happening and a way that they can be part of what's happening is to give money. >> turns out, both parties fundraising in the bay area at the same time is strategic. >> there's the added pressure of now that the conviction of donald trump has come out, both sides want to show how they're getting momentum out of that decision. campaigns report their fundraising every quarter, every three months, and the end of june is the end of a quarter. and so there's a huge push this month to raise as much money as

barricading themselves inside the office of the university's president as part of a pro-palestinian demonstration. officials claim the building sustained extensive damage, including inflammatory graffiti on the walls. they say protesters shoved and injured a public safety officer this afternoon. demonstrators rallied outside the jail, calling for the release of those arrested while back on campus. others blasted the university for removing their pro-palestinian encampment following this morning's incident. >> i think that it's cowardly. they're retaliating against the entire encampment uh, even though they already arrested the students. so obviously it's a retaliatory action. >> the university issued a statement saying they're appalled by the actions of the group, adding that any of the students arrested today were seniors. if any were seniors. they won't be allowed to graduate. stay with us for continuing coverage of the college campus protests in the

mammal center shared this video before it was taken to angel island state park to determine cause of death. the whale is a female about 30ft long, first spotted in the bay on monday, and this is the second dead gray whale in the bay area the center has responded to just this year. new developments that just might make a difference for you in the next major earthquake. today, the u.s. geological survey announced a major improvement to the shake alert system, all because of data that was gathered by satellites. >> abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is here with a look at those changes. suzanne. >> so, j.r, right now you'll get an alert on your phone when there's an earthquake nearby of a magnitude 4.5 or larger. satellite data has just been incorporated into the warning system. so that means if there's a very large earthquake, you'll find out how big it is. and where it's centered a lot sooner. scientists say that will give you more time to take action. >> oh, my god.

>> major earthquakes could mean major damage as you can see just below me, the magnitude seven earthquakes are the ones that typically cause a lot of damage, and they're significant events. so an early warning could be a key to protecting people and infrastructure. the shake alert earthquake early warning system sends alerts to users in california, oregon and washington via a phone app. those warnings, usually just a few seconds, depend on how far you are from the epicenter of the quake. now there's a big improvement, usgs scientist bob degroot is a lead shake alert operations team member. >> we've now integrated global positioning system data into our overall data feed, into how we collect information about earthquakes. >> gps sensors will allow for more accurate determination of the increasing magnitude by incorporating data from gps systems and using data from 1500 seismic sensors, scientists will be able to give people more opportunity to protect themselves and to drop, cover and hold on. >> here's how it works. the gps

sensors measure how far the earth has moved, either up or down or sideways left, right. >> and the seismic sensors tell us how fast the ground is moving. >> usgs geophysicist jessica murray says this is a big deal. >> i think it's very exciting because it's bringing in a whole new kind of observation that we didn't have available in the system before, and improving its functionality for the very large earthquakes that eventually we will encounter. >> the improvements to the shake alert system are welcomed by the san francisco department of emergency management, who told us, quote, we are encouraged by recent developments in earthquake warning technology and look forward to continuing our work with usgs to ensure san franciscans receive the earliest warnings possible. we encourage everyone to take steps today to prepare for the next damaging earthquake and the shakealert earthquake early warning system is a public safety tool for more than 50 million residents and

for you, it's called the bola wrap. and we showed you this video last year. the chronicle reports that specially trained san francisco police officers will be equipped with this restraint tool in the coming months. the electronic handheld lasso device is an alternative to a taser or a gun or a baton. it shoots out a 7.5ft cord that wraps around a person with two anchors that kind of look like fishing hooks, each device costs around $1,300. the makers of bolawrap say it's used by more than 1000 law enforcement agencies nationwide. >> that video, larry, is incredible. >> it's unbelievable technology how they just keep talking, i keep walking, yeah, but we got to talk about the weather because it is hot outside. yeah spencer it's a scorcher out there. spencer. yeah, it is a scorcher for the second consecutive day. >> and of course, we've been talking about fire concerns the last several days. and we have a fire in saint helena right now over the silverado trail area, just off silverado trail, in fact. and it's burning 60 acres at the moment. it's a 102 degrees and uh- saint helena. so

we'll get you more on the fire a little bit later. i want to show you what's going on with the wind right now. wind may or may not be a factor in containing that fire right now, because the wind up in that area has not been very gusty today. although once a fire develops like that, it can generate gusts at its base. so right now, up in the north bay, we're looking at wind speeds anywhere from nine to about 12mph. it's breezy, near the coast and around the bay shoreline, but nothing like the powerful area wide gusts we had yesterday. here's a view from sutro tower looking out over san francisco, where it's 74 degrees right now. oakland 7985. hayward 90 at san jose, 91, redwood city. there's some of that heat we've been talking about 61 at half moon bay, blue sky over the golden gate for the second consecutive day, generally indicating when you have the absence of a marine layer, a bit of warmth, and it is warm 98 degrees up at santa rosa right now, 60 in petal, 86 rather in petaluma, 90 in napa, 101 apiece in fairfield and concord, 99 in livermore. these are our forecast headlines. heat advisory is in effect now through tomorrow night up until

midnight tomorrow night. as a matter of fact, a beach hazards rough, dangerous surf will be with us into tomorrow evening. so the coastline may not be the safest place to go right now. tomorrow and friday, the heat eases and the cooling begins. and that can't happen soon enough. overnight, look for just a few high clouds swinging by. a small area of coastal clouds will develop south of the golden gate, right along the santa cruz mountains or the peninsula coastline. i should say, but mainly clear skies overnight and another mainly sunny day tomorrow. now, overnight lows will be generally in the mid to upper 50s, so a pretty mild overnight but not like last night's warmth overnight where many locations had lows in the low 60s and then tomorrow's highs 60 for half moon bay 68, san francisco. notice we'll see some cooling right around the bay shoreline. upper 70s there, where today we had upper 80s inland areas. many of which were at or above 100 degrees. today will be in the upper 90s tomorrow. antioch, one of those. livermore 93 up in the north bay. high of 94, likely at santa rosa. now let's talk about our heat advisory, which is in

effect for all of the bay area except the bay shoreline and the coast, and now includes the santa cruz mountains. this is in effect until midnight tomorrow night. under these conditions, there's an increased risk of heat related illness in solano county. it's even more severe. it's an excessive heat warning that's in effect until 8 p.m. tomorrow. if you're thinking about going to the beach, well, we have a beach hazard statement in effect through tomorrow evening. wave heights are elevated. the surf is rough. there's a risk of dangerous sneaker waves. so once again, it might be a good idea to stay away from the coast until the waves settle down in the surf becomes a little calmer. here's the accuweather seven day forecast so we get a little bit of cooling near the coast and bay tomorrow. still pretty hot inland, but we can say that the heat will be easing tomorrow. cooler pattern on friday. it will feel noticeably cooler just about everywhere. and going into the weekend we will hold on to that cooling pattern with a few clouds in the sky, but mainly bright sky conditions. mild to warm but not hot, but early next week monday, tuesday wednesday looks like another warming

arguing that the officers were not in uniform and did not show their police identification. elder and natale yort faced life sentences before they were reduced, and then italy's highest court ordered a new trial. a final decision is expected next month. meanwhile, attorneys for american amanda knox say they will appeal today's decision by an italian court that reconvicted her of slander. the seattle native made headlines 16 years ago when she was charged, then convicted of murdering her roommate in italy. during the process, she was convicted of wrongly accusing a bar owner of committing that murder. knox will not serve time in prison, as she's already spent four years in jail for the original sentence. >> the theranos fraud case involving founder elizabeth holmes heads back to court next tuesday. the ninth circuit court of appeals is set to review the convictions of both holmes and her president, ceo boyfriend, sunny balwani, in 2022. separate juries found the two guilty of defrauding investors and the now

defunct blood testing company. holmes is currently serving an 11 year prison sentence. balwani received nearly 13 years. >> this week, the dmv cut in-person services. so many are online only right now. >> yeah, but some viewers tell seven on your side. they clicked on a link they thought was the dmv. instead, it was a third party company that charged extra fees. >> yeah, this was especially upsetting for an elderly east bay man who disputed extra charges on his credit card. and then he was threatened to be charged with fraud after that, abc seven news reporter stephanie sierra has the details. >> i didn't want to go to court. i'm not a criminal. >> 81 year-old alan jensen. just wanted to renew his car registration. a simple task was anything but. >> look at. look at this. >> alan wound up buried in paperwork and facing legal threats. it's not about the money. his ordeal began when he went online to register his two vehicles. the top search result said dmv registration renewal. >> right there. that's what i

clicked on. >> he assumed it was the dmv, so he followed the prompts and paid $956 to register two cars. he didn't notice this disclaimer in fine print at the top of the page. this was not the dmv. it was a third party company that charges extra fees for dmv services. later he received tags for one car but not the other. a notice said that the car needed a smog check, but he knew it did not. so he called the number. >> we're not going to send you the tags until after you've had this car smog, i said. well, no, i don't need the smog. my car. >> alan finally realized he was never on the dmv website. it was need tags.com, and it had charged $150 in extra fees. not only that, the company insisted he get a smog check he didn't need. now his registration was about to expire, so alan drove to a dmv office, paid the fees in person, got his tags on the spot, and no smog needed. but

now he'd paid twice to register that car. >> i finally got really mad, so alan disputed the charges with his credit card. >> that's when need tags came after him. >> they're going to bring you to court. >> need tags. said alan was under investigation for fraud and theft. an email said, quote, this is your final notice. any chargeback will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, and you are subject to court costs, legal fees and bank liens. >> they're trying to make me feel like a criminal. 2324 need tags sent 30 pages of documents to alan's credit card company saying chargebacks are considered theft. >> even though they're legal. >> i'm not a criminal. i'm i've never been to jail. >> as he showed us mounds of paperwork, alan broke down in tears. how did a simple car registration come to this? we found dozens of complaints online about need tags, many saying the company led them to

news and that breaking news is out of napa county, where a grass fire has burned at least 60 acres and is clearly threatening structures near saint helena. you can see the flames charred an area around what looks to be an estate. cal fire says the crystal fire is near crystal springs road and silverado trail. there are several wineries in the area, and cal fire says the flames are currently burning toward the bell canyon reservoir. it is not too far from rombauer vineyards. the bay area air quality management district has issued an air quality advisory. because of all t
