news and that breaking news is out of napa county, where a grass fire has burned at least 60 acres and is clearly threatening structures near saint helena. you can see the flames charred an area around what looks to be an estate. cal fire says the crystal fire is near crystal springs road and silverado trail. there are several wineries in the area, and cal fire says the flames are currently burning toward the bell canyon reservoir. it is not too far from rombauer vineyards. the bay area air quality management district has issued an air quality advisory. because of all that smoke that you see,

this fire is near the location of the 2020 glass fire, which wiped out hundreds of homes and damaged dozens of wineries. so we continue to keep an eye on that and say, good evening, i'm ama daetz and i'm jr stone. >> so for more on the fire conditions in the area, let's bring in abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian. okay, jerry, as you know, it's hot across the entire bay area. when the fire started, it was over 102 degrees in saint helena. right now it's still 100 degrees. as we look at the conditions near the fire. relative humidity 39, which is quite low. the wind hasn't been very strong there. the steady winds about ten 11mph, gusts up to about 19mph. but of course closer to the fire. the gusts may be stronger as these fires tend to generate their own gusts near the base. so the current weather conditions are not helpful to the firefighting effort all across the bay area. right now, we're looking at intense heat, numerous locations inland, as you can see, are at or above 100 degrees. other inland spots upper 90s around the bay shoreline. we have highs in the uh. temperatures right

now, upper 80s to near 90, and it's breezy generally across the bay area. the strongest winds right now are closer to the coastline, so we don't have those powerful gusts that we had yesterday. nonetheless we still have a heat advisory in effect until midnight tomorrow night for the entire bay area, and it's an excessive heat warning for solano county. that's in effect until 8:00 tomorrow night. and we don't expect a lot of cooling tomorrow, certainly not in our inland areas. a closer look at the forecast a little bit later. grandma. thank you so much, spencer. >> and we continue our team coverage with abc seven news reporter lena howland in the east bay. >> lena. >> well, it is hot, hot, hot out here at 100 degrees in brentwood right now. and yet we are finding no shortage of families outside, whether it's here at a splash pad, out on a boat or even out on a hike. we checked in with fire officials about what you should be doing now to protect yourself during this heat wave. during the b

first heat wave of 2020, for more than 120, anglers from across the country have set sail in oakley, hoping to make their biggest catch of the year. >> i'm from kentucky, western kentucky. it does get warm there, but we don't very often hit triple digits. >> ellen gray is director of the major league fishing western toyota series. the series kicked off at six wednesday morning, when anglers were encouraged to hydrate early and often, and to wear protective clothing. >> if we don't take care of the fishermen and the resources being the fish, then we can't have fish and tournaments because, he says, all fish caught here are released back into the water every night. if they bring in, we'll call it an expired fish, which they rarely do. they're penalized. >> meanwhile, people all over the east bay spent the day trying to avoid the heat. >> it's super hot today. i was just trying to. sorry. let me turn down this ac. i have it on blast because i'm just preparing for the heat. it's already at like 90 degrees. >> still, it wasn't too hot for

82 year old heriberto lopez out of antioch to go on his daily 2 to 3 mile walk and theo, great. >> i feel great walking no matter what. it's a sign of cold, but triple digits in brentwood are keeping crews from the contra costa county fire protection district on edge. >> we are in those prime, i hate to say it this way, but those good fire conditions for vegetation, as far as vegetation fires are concerned. >> already seeing smaller fires earlier this week, fire officials are asking hikers to use common sense and take plenty of water to avoid getting stuck and tying up their resources. >> so that gets priority over the environment, over the fires. so we have to prioritize those responses. so if you call us and you're up on the mountain, we're coming to get you. and it could be quite a few people coming to get you. and that takes away from the vegetation response. >> fire officials are also reminding families to pack extra sunscreen, wear protective

clothing, try to limit your outdoor activities when you can, and always bring extra water with you. live in brentwood. lena howland, abc seven news lena, thanks so much. >> a report out this afternoon says some californians may be able to keep their home insurance. after all, according to the chronicle, some state farm customers have received notice that they can keep their coverage, but the policy cannot include fire damage, the report says. the customers must also sign up for fire insurance through the california fair plan, a state created but privately run insurer of last resort. in march, the company announced that it wouldn't renew some 30,000 policies due largely because of fire and earthquake risks. in the south bay. >> more than a dozen people, including stanford students, were arrested on campus today. those arrests were made after the group of pro-palestinian protesters barricaded themselves inside the office of the university's president. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes

was at the jail, where more demonstrators called for their release. joins us now live from the south bay bureau. as we are continuing to follow the story of these campus protests, zach ummah, as many of those demonstrators were at the jail, the campus, the encampment back at the campus was being taken down. >> the university said that today's events that also led to a public safety officer being injured crossed the line. the demonstrators say that the university has not acted in good faith. fro will be free calls for the release of demonstrators who were arrested wednesday. those arrests came after the demonstrators barricaded themselves inside the president's office, sparking a chaotic early morning scene. the aftermath still around hours after, with graffiti on this building's brick walls, vandalism that those arrested say they were not involved in, they basically have maintained that they're entirely separate from any, like more formalized body of pro-palestine student

organizing on campus, whether it be an organizing body, whether it be an encampment. this woman who goes by the name emily had been a spokesperson for the encampment, though she said these demonstrators weren't involved in organizing the encampment. she said they asked her to speak on their behalf. >> they have simply felt that they cannot observe any longer, is what they told me, and they have felt that their, that the school is not acting in good faith towards students who have been acting in what they consider to be good faith. adam swart is the founder of crowds on demand, a firm that organizes advocacy events and demonstrations. >> he called the move by demonstrators wednesday morning a bad tactic. >> you are making it very easy to reduce the entire move, the entire pro-palestine movement into the most violent, absurd misguided acts. instead of keeping the focus on your core, talking points about the human rights matter at hand, the university said 13 were arrested. >> campus newspaper the stanford

daily said one of its reporters is one of those arrested, and while allies of the arrested demonstrators were at the santa clara county main jail in san jose, calling for their release, the university removed the encampment. i think that it's cowardly, they're retaliating against the entire encampment, even though they already arrested the students, the university said it removed the encampment in the interest of public safety. >> in a statement wednesday, it said in part, quote, until today, we have allowed the encampment to remain. the situation on campus is now crossed the line from peaceful protest to actions that threaten the safety of our community. now, the university has also said that any individuals who are arrested that are students will be suspended. if those students are seniors, they will not be allowed to graduate. the spokesperson for those demonstrators said that they made their decisions knowing what the consequences could be. right now, live in the south bay bureau. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> thanks, zach. another group of pro-palestinian protesters gathered on san francisco's valencia street today outside a

fundraiser by vice president kamala harris. police set up barricades and only let residents through between 18th and 19th streets. we saw officers take at least one person into custody, at least one protester attended the event at the chapel. a live music venue. security escorted him out as he interrupted harris's speech. >> former president donald trump is also making a fundraising stop in san francisco. he'll be in town tomorrow for an event hosted by tech billionaire david sachs, who lives in pacific heights. tickets range from $50,000 to half $1 million. trump supporters are planning a rally at marina green tomorrow afternoon. it's not clear if that's where trump will arrive, but sitting presidents sometimes arrive at marina green by helicopter. the location is also just down the hill from the trump fundraiser. on the other side, the organizers behind the inflatable trump chicken are bringing the bird out of retirement for thursday's event. back in 2018, the chicken circled alcatraz wearing a prison shirt. organizers are planning to set sail with the

bird from fisherman's wharf, passing by alcatraz and marina green at san francisco's city hall. >> mayor london breed says she was the target of racist and sexist graffiti painted on city hall. overnight. the mayor held a news press conference late this afternoon. abc seven news reporter melanie woodrow joins us live from the newsroom with more j.r. >> right now that graffiti is covered up and the mayor did not share exactly what it said, only that she believed the message was aimed at her. she says employees who arrived for work early this morning reported the graffiti, and the department of public works was quick to respond, as well as the sheriff's office helping to ensure the minimum number of people would be impacted or exposed to the graffiti. >> i'm pretty sure i was a target. i mean, this is not unfamiliar to me. i do deal with this every day, whether it's, you know, things that have said on social media as well as emails that i receive that describe me as exactly what was on this wall or even in front of my own home where there have been spray paint such words.

sadly, consistently and i'm really grateful to public works department because as soon as it happens, they immediately get to it. >> mayor breed says sfpd and the sheriff's office are investigating, and there is surveillance video. she also said more information, and possibly images of the graffiti would be made available to journalists when it can be released in the newsroom. melanie woodrow, abc seven news. >> melanie, thank you. the state supreme court is expected to deliver its decision on housing at berkeley's people's park tomorrow. the ruling will likely end a three year legal battle that led to protests at the park earlier this year. university of california regents are accused of violating the california environmental quality act, with plans to build student housing and low income housing on people's park. those who oppose the project want to preserve the park as a site for political activism. >> a san francisco sports bar, loooooong. that sports bar is long legal battle with the nfl heads to court tomorrow, the owners of mucky duck are suing

the league over the nfl's sunday ticket tv package. the lawsuit was filed back in 2015, and since then, it's become a class action case. mucky duck and other plaintiffs claim the nfl engaged in price fixing scheme in a price fixing scheme that limits fans ability to watch out-of-market games by inflating the cost of sunday ticket. if the nfl loses this case, the league could have to pay out a whopping $21 billion. >> coming up, it's official a petition to recall oakland mayor shengtao has now been filed with the city. we'll hear from organizers of the recall effort. >> plus, one day after oakland's newest baseball team held its first home game, what are the reviews from the neighborhood? we'll hear from the community near raymond park when abc seven news

about an hour ago, members of the group calling itself oakland united to recall shengtao, announced that they have submitted more than 41,000 signatures today about 17,000 more than required. organizers say their effort received support from across oakland. >> they are tired. tired. tired. exhausted from this incompetent, dishonest mayor who's driving oakland into the ground. yes >> statement saying in part, we will not be distracted by the politics of out-of-town billionaires or special interests, and i will continue to work every day for oakland's interests. i know we are stronger together in west oakland. >> the city's newest baseball team made history last night with its first ever home game at raymond park. the ballers didn't win the game, but they are hoping to win over the community

. and now, with the long stretch of home games, some residents are voicing concerns over the traffic and noise. abc7 news reporter anser hassan has more. >> it was a historic first pitch. the first ever home opener for the oakland ballers at raymond park, which brought out a sellout crowd. with all the fanfare inside the park, there were a few nearby residents who raised concerns over traffic and noise. >> i have to say, the noise wasn't that bad. i was expecting it to be a lot louder. i mean, there was a lot of foot traffic and car traffic right when the game started and probably like towards the end of the game. >> andrew kline reed lives across the street from the field. he fully supports the oakland ballers playing here, but he says he does understand his neighbors concerns. >> there was some tailgating going on which some of the neighbors did have concerns because it started so early and some folks do work from home. but other than that, you know, i didn't know negatives. >> i believe it's a good

investment. it creates jobs. >> randall harrison has lived in the neighborhood for 71 years. his house is three blocks away. he's excited that the ballers have made it their home too. he wasn't impacted by traffic, but adds the game time should help. >> i'm glad they started the games like 630 and people can mow the out at least no later than 10:00, which is a reasonable time for safety reasons. >> and organizers say opening day is always the busiest, and there were many conversations beforehand around traffic and noise. they add that raymond is a ten acre park and was designed for big sporting events, but they are monitoring and adjusting accordingly. >> we're going through an adjustment period with raymond park specifically, where more people want to be there. that's going to create more traffic, that's going to create more noise, that might disturb some people. and i think that's just going to need to be an ongoing adjustment and conversation process. >> the team's next 11 games will

move forward. the city council has unanimously voted against letting the experiment restart. scientists had wanted to spray sea salt into the air from the decommissioned aircraft carrier, to see if the particles could reflect heat back into space. the idea was being looked at as a way to slow global warming, but the city stopped the testing shortly after it started over. concerns it would hurt people's health as well as the environment. >> well, it feels comfortable here in the studio, but it's a different story outside. yes. >> let's get to abc seven news. weather anchor spencer christian sweating just on the school drop

off walk today. >> if only we can invite everybody to come join us in the studio right now. so, you know, we've got the heat, we've got fire weather conditions, we've got brisk winds. but fortunately, as you can see, the winds are not so gusty and potentially dangerous as they were yesterday. it's windy here closer to the coast. however, many of our inland areas have breezes right now between 13 and 18mph. we've got sunshine and we've got heat, but it's diminishing at the moment. 73 degrees in santa rosa and now san francisco, oakland, 7583 at hayward and san jose, 91 degrees and 59 at half moon bay. blue sky over the golden gate. and it's warm up north 97 degrees at santa rosa, petaluma, 8289 at napa, 101 at fairfield, 100 at concord and 99 at livermore. looking out over the bay from mount tam. these are the forecast headlines. heat advisory in effect through tomorrow night. beach hazard, rough and dangerous surf. that uh- alert is in effect until tomorrow evening. and tomorrow and friday. the heat will begin to ease and there will be further cooling on friday into

the weekend. now, the forecast animation shows a few high clouds passing over tonight. a limited area of low clouds will form along the peninsula coastline won't amount to much though, because we'll have sunny skies to start the day once again tomorrow and it will be another fairly warm day. speaking of warm overnight, not quite so warm tonight as it was last night. we had lows in many locations last night that didn't drop below 6264 degrees. that's uncomfortably warm for overnight , but tonight we'll see mid to upper 50s for the most part. and then highs tomorrow mid to upper 90s in the inland areas. many of which were up above 100 degrees today around the bay shoreline where we had upper 80s to near 90. today we'll have low to mid 80s tomorrow, and the coast will have highs in the low to mid 60s. still, though, that heat advisory is in effect for all of the bay area except the coastline and the bay shore through tomorrow evening. of course, under these conditions, there's a greater risk of heat related illness. and for solano county, it's an excessive heat warning thinking of going to the beach? you may want to reconsider that because we have rough surf, a risk of dangerous sneaker waves, elevated wave

heights, and this beach hazard statement is in effect through tomorrow evening. here's the accuweather seven day forecast again. heat eases tomorrow, but it'll still be pretty hot inland, with some locations reaching mid 90s low 80s around the bay shoreline. there'll be further cooling on friday, saturday and sunday. that's a three day stretch. it looks great. just lovely, comfortable weather coming our way, but temperatures begin to rise again early next week. not into the hundreds, but at least into the 90s. >> okay, still like that beach picture? yeah, i'm still dreaming about plotting a way to get away. >> thanks, spencer. >> okay, former stanford women's basketball star cameron brink is headed to the olympics. >> oh my god, oh my god >> thank you. >> what a moment. brink shed tears as she got the news. she's been selected to represent the united states in three on three basketball in paris this summer. brink currently as a rookie with the los angeles sparks in the
