flames ignite in the hills of wine country. several well known vineyards in danger as they have been before. firefighters returning to the burn scar of the 2020 glass fire and fighting through 100 degree heat to take down yet another flare up of the early summer. good evening. i'm ama daetz and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us. as soon as we spotted the first bit of smoke really hit a worrisome nerve because of the area, of course, and because of how fast we know that these fires can explode. >> yes. good news is firefighters are getting a quick grip on the so-called crystal fire. they reached 65% containment about an hour ago with virtually no change in growth. now. >> calmer winds, thankfully, are helping keep the flames at bay and no buildings have burned. crews say it's the biggest test they've been handed this year for firefighters had to go to the hospital because of the tough conditions.

>> abc seven news reporter tim johns has more from saint helena . >> cal fire officials say while they've had several smaller fires so far this year, this is the first substantial one they've had to deal with this season. they say their quick response, along with their partners, was critical in ensuring that this blaze wasn't worse. sean moore was at her home in rural napa county just a few miles from saint helena, wednesday afternoon, when suddenly she smelled smoke after she went to look out the window, moore says she saw a wall of flames heading her direction. just a whole bad word. after processing what she was seeing, moore says she grabbed the dodge she's currently watching, immediately got into her car and went to go get her. parents, who live nearby, drove up the hill to get them, and then called the neighbors that live up there and then stopped by another neighbor that i knew was home, that i don't have their number just to say, get out now. cal fire says the so-called crystal fire broke out around 145 wednesday afternoon, amid a heat wave that has engulfed the bay area, among other harsh conditions. crews

battling the blaze faced outside temperatures of over 100 degrees. >> steep terrain really hot, so a lot of hard work trying to get hose up to that fire for the firefighters that were on the ground. >> this is the first major fire to break out in the north bay this season. fire officials say they're prepared for a potentially busy summer. they're urging everyone who lives in a fire zone to make sure they two are ready. >> everything is drying out. we start to see the end of may in the north bay. at least here, that fire activity really start to pick up the cause of this fire is still under investigation, but morris says she's just thankful for the quick action preventing this from possibly becoming so much worse. >> i'm just so grateful. so grateful. immediate response. they just they care and they're here for us. so i'm my house is here because they saved it in the glass fire. so they did it again. >> now cal fire says they are expected to have crews out here throughout the night and into thursday morning. just doing everything they can to make sure

this fire stays contained in napa county. tim johns, abc seven news. >> thank you tim, and we need to bring in abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian with some hopeful news after that stretch of heat. >> it's been pretty tough. he's tracking what we have ahead for us in our 24 hour accuweather forecast. spencer. >> all right. dan and i'm well, the hopeful news in saint helena is that the temperature has dropped sharply down into the 70s. now relative humidity is rising and the wind is relatively calm. it's only about 75 degrees there now. so that is of course helpful to the firefighting effort. now for tomorrow. here's your day planner. early tomorrow morning, mostly sunny with a few lingering clouds 64 degrees inland, 60 around the bay, low 50s on the coast. by midday it will be mainly sunny, 86 degrees inland, 74 around the bay, 60 on the coast going into the afternoon. the peak of our warming. we'll see mid 90s inland tomorrow, but no triple digits. upper 70s around the bay. low 60s on the coast. getting into the evening hours just around well before sunset. actually low 80s inland upper

60s near the bay, about 59 or 60 on the coast and there are cooler days ahead. the heat is receding. i'll have the accuweather forecast a little bit later. ummah. all right. >> thank you spencer. as we work to build a better bay area, san francisco's district attorney is looking to build a better city by providing opportunities to children and young adults in brooke jenkins's words, you will see the da's office working with them like you have never seen before. and she means it. >> you can expect to see students working in the san francisco district attorney's office on wednesday night, brooke jenkins formally announced her new access to hope initiative. >> fellowship opportunities will be available to give participants guidance and mentorship, along with all sorts of access for career and professional development. >> my goal is to hopefully empower our young adults and our youth to never have to come in contact with this system, not as a victim and not as a perpetrator. >> jenkins says her office in the past year has seen a rise, particularly in juvenile victims

, placing some of the blame on the drug crisis that's plagued the city. she says. that's just one of the issues kids are facing. >> we know that there are challenges within our public school system here, as well as a number of other things that, you know, some kids go through having incarcerated parents, having parents who have passed away. >> as for where she came up with the name, the district attorney provided a very simple explanation in it's titled access to hope because in my view, so many people end up in the criminal justice system because they are hopeless, and so they end up making poor choices because they feel they have nothing to lose. former san francisco supervisor malia cohen was one of those in attendance for tonight's announcement. she's currently the state comptroller, but recognizes the significance of what the district attorney's office is trying to accomplish. i think this is paramount. this is a game changer. the initiative includes a partnership with the sojourn project. it takes students to the deep south to learn about some of the key moments and people in the civil rights movement, cohen says. it is vital to expose youth to the

past to build a better future. coming from the african american culture and the diaspora, we firmly believe that you have to know your past so that you are not destined to repeat it. and people can apply right now for the fellowships through the district attorney's office official website. it's open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 24 at san francisco city hall today, mayor london breed said she was the target of racist and sexist graffiti sprayed overnight. >> this is not unfamiliar to me. i do deal with this every day, whether it's, you know, things that have said on social media as well as emails that i receive that describe me as exactly what was on this wall or even in front of my own home. >> the mayor says employees found the graffiti when they arrived for work this morning. the department of public works was quick to respond, as well as the sheriff's office. there is surveillance video, apparently, and mayor breed says the san francisco police department is investigating. >> time to get into tonight's abc seven news advancer at 11.

it's our way. we get you on top of the headlines you'll be hearing more about in the days to come. tonight, it's all about the big campaign visits in the bay area. tomorrow, former president donald trump will make a fundraising stop in san francisco. he'll be at the pacific heights home of tech billionaire david sax. supporters plan to gather at marina green. although trump has no official event scheduled, there today, a group of pro-palestinian protesters rallied in the mission outside of a fundraiser for vice president kamala harris. >> police set up barricades and only let residents through between 18th and 19th streets. now we saw officers take at least one person into custody. at least one protester got into the fundraising event at the chapel. that's a live music venue. security escorted him out as soon as he interrupted harris's speech. now we'll follow every piece of tomorrow's visit by former president trump. make sure you're not missing a moment of this with the abc seven news bay area app. you can download it wherever you stream abc seven news. >> our other abc seven news

advances at 11 tonight. there's a crucial vote on san francisco's effort to bring a pair of pandas to the zoo. mayor london breeds fundraising plan was already voted down by the board of supervisors. tomorrow, the board will take on whether to allow from private groups to fund the project. the zoo is going to need some significant upgrades in order to host the pandas. the mayor thought she had sealed the deal after a trip to china in april, but not everyone is thrilled about the pandas. a group is planning a protest because it says the zoo is, quote, crumbling and has other problems. >> new at 11, a flagship university is tipping toward becoming more of a sinking ship. founded nearly 100 years ago, cal maritime moved around the bay area until finding its permanent home during world war two at morro cove in vallejo. but tonight, the academy is facing yet another challenge, and abc seven news reporter lauren martinez explains the issues for cal maritime and what might be coming next. cal maritime, a nautical institution in vallejo, may have to merge

with cal poly san luis obispo. >> the california state university announced a recommendation wednesday for the two institutions to integrate. csu executives cite financial challenges and declining enrollment at cal maritime. we spoke with congressman john garamendi. >> cal maritime is extraordinarily important for the san francisco bay area. >> cal maritime, located by the carquinez bridge, is one of only six maritime academies in the nation that produce u.s. coast guard licensed mariners. they also provide specialized programs in marine transportation and marine engineering technology. >> cal maritime has been unable to really advertise its attributes. they are very significant. i mean, you could go to that school four years later, you have $100,000 a year job on a ship or on a shore. >> according to the csu, enrollment at cal maritime has declined by 31% from 1107 students in 2016 to 761 students

in 2023. >> cal poly, on the other hand, has as more applicants than they can take, and so some of those students are going to see an opportunity and there's more at cal maritime than just maritime. >> so out of all the csu's, why do you feel like cal poly is the right fit to pair with cal maritime? >> well, the title itself, cal poly polytechnical. well, cal maritime is polytechnic cal paula meaning many technical. obviously maritime technical issues. >> we spoke with vallejo mayor robert mcconnell. >> we had actually discussed the possibility of cal maritime being merged several months ago. >> as far as a name change, that's undecided for now. mayor mcconnell says cal maritime alumni are very loyal to the name. >> they would not look favorably. i think, upon a cal state identity. they will insist that the cal maritime name be preserved forever. >> the csu board of trustees

will vote on the integration in november in the south bay. lauren martinez abc seven news. >> one more note under the proposed merger, the vallejo campus would remain open where students could participate in cal maritime's specialized degree programs. but the school's leadership and operations would be merged with cal poly san luis obispo. cal maritime students would also be able to access programs and resources currently available only at cal poly. >> we have been closely following the student protests and demonstrations at college campuses across the country, and now the tensions have boiled over at stanford, 13 current and former students were arrested and taken to jail after taking over the school president's office. officials claim the building sustained extensive damage, including inflammatory graffiti on the walls. they say protesters shoved and injured a public safety officer this afternoon. demonstrators rallied outside the jail, calling for the release of those arrested while back on campus. others blasted the university for removing their pro-palestinian

the marine mammal center shared a video before it was taken to angel island state park for a necropsy. this whale is a female and is about 30ft long. it was first spotted in the bay on monday. this is the second dead gray whale in the bay area. the center has responded to so far this year. in april, a 40 foot whale washed at crown washed up at crown beach in alameda. scientists determined it likely died from injuries suffered when a ship hit it. ship strikes are not uncommon. they are the leading cause of death. in fact, for whales that is according to noaa. >> the state supreme court is expected to deliver its decision on housing at berkeley's people's park tomorrow. the ruling will likely end a three year legal battle that led to protests at the park earlier this year. university of california regents are accused of violating the california environmental quality act, with plans to build student housing and low income housing on people's park. those who oppose the project want to preserve the park as a site for political activism. >> the senate has failed to advance legislation that would

codify the right to access contraceptives nationwide. the right to contraception act fell short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. the bill was put forward by a group of senate democrats in the aftermath of the 22 supreme court decision that overturned roe versus wade. republicans dismissed the legislation as a political ploy. >> we're going to see democrats engage in a show vote, and there's a reason for that show vote, because democrats in the senate, every one of them, their views on abortion are extreme and radical. >> this is not a show vote. it's a show us who you are. vote. >> democrats are looking to put reproductive care at the front of their agenda. in the lead up to the november elections, all but two republicans present voted against the measure. >> a report out this afternoon says some californians may be able to keep their home insurance after all. according to the chronicle, some state farm customers have received notice that they can keep their

coverage, but the policy cannot include fire damage, the report says. the customers must also sign up for fire insurance through the california fair plan, a state created but privately run insurer of last resort. in march, the company announced it wouldn't allow some 30,000 policies due largely because of fire and earthquake risk. rubio's coastal grill has filed for bankruptcy protection. the fast casual restaurant chain said diminishing in-store traffic and significant increases to the california minimum wage contributed to the financial troubles. the news comes days after rubio's announced plans to shutter nearly 50 locations. 11 of those in northern california. rubio said it plans to continue to operate 86 restaurants in california, arizona and nevada. the value of nvidia passed $3 trillion today. only two other companies have ever reached that point apple and microsoft. nvidia makes artificial intelligence chips. its headquarters are in santa clara.

the company's value eclipsed apple's today, so nvidia is now the second largest publicly traded company in the u.s. >> speaking of technology, those earthquake alerts that we receive on our cell phones are improving. the u.s. geological survey says tonight that the shake alert system will now use gps data. scientists say incorporating satellite data and using 1500 seismic sensors will give people more of an opportunity to drop, cover and hold on. the sensors measure how far the earth has moved, either up, down or left or right, and tell us how fast the ground is moving. >> i think it's very exciting because it's bringing in a whole new kind of observation that we didn't have available in the system before, and improving its functionality for the very large earthquakes that eventually we will encounter. >> the shake alert alert app sends alerts to people via a cell phone app. you can sign up for it now by going to the site on your screen. shake alert .org. >> california's first heat wave

of the season is a reminder of the dangers of working outside. oswaldo perez supervises a group of farm workers picking cherries this week in san joaquin county. he makes sure they stay safe in the triple digit heat. >> if someone is feeling the heat because it's hot, if you need to sit down and rest, there's no problem. >> perez makes sure water is handed out to his crew throughout the workday, and they wrap up around 3 p.m. before the heat peaks each day. >> it's got to be hard working that heat. >> yeah. all right. so let's check on this heat. yeah. >> abc seven news weather anchor spencer christian is here. is it easing? spencer? it is easing. >> i'm happy to report. as a matter of fact, the next couple of days, we'll see it getting progressively more comfortable. right now we're looking at cooling around the bay area and moderate to light winds. in fact, we don't have any wind speeds over ten miles per hour except for one location, two locations sfo excuse me, and rio vista with 12 mile per hour

winds. so when we go under clear skies, a nice view of san francisco from sutro tower. we have upper 50s right now in san francisco and oakland, 64, hayward 70 at san jose, 68. redwood city. half moon bay checks in at 52 degrees. a nice clear view from mount tam, in fact, looking down onto the bay and portions of san francisco. we have 64 degrees right now at santa rosa, petaluma, 5564 at napa and mid 70s at fairfield, concord and livermore. those inland areas are a little bit slower to cool down than locations around the bay and on the coast. and these are our forecast headlines. heat advisory remains in effect even with the cooling through tomorrow evening, as does the beach hazards alert through tomorrow evening. we have rough and potentially dangerous surf right now, and then on tomorrow and friday we'll see the heat easing starting tomorrow and cooling begins on friday. tomorrow, tonight, rather under mainly clear skies. look for low temperatures generally in the mid 50s. still pretty mild, but not nearly so mild as the last night's lows, which were in the 60s in most locations. then highs tomorrow under mostly sunny skies. 64 half moon bay

68. here in san francisco around the bay shoreline, mainly upper 70s to about 8081 degrees. inland areas still pretty warm tomorrow. no triple digits are likely, but we'll see low to mid 90s in many inland locations from the north bay to the inland east bay down in the south bay. look for a high of 89 at san jose, so that heat advisory for the bay area is still in effect, covering all parts of the bay area except the bay shoreline and the coast. and that means that under these conditions, of course, there's an elevated risk of heat related illness. for solano county, this is an excessive heat warning, which is more severe, of course, than just a heat advisory. and if you're thinking of going to the beach to cool off, well, we have beach hazards to keep in mind, so might not be the safest place to go. we've got elevated wave heights, a risk of sneaker waves and rough surf, and that's in effect until tomorrow evening as well. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. so tomorrow still warm inland, but no triple digits. then on friday we get some real cooling with inland highs barely reaching 90 degrees. in fact, friday saturday and sunday. very
