areas hit 102 104 for daytime highs. today it's about a 10 degrees drop. it's still warm out there inland. we'll go into the low 90s under full sunshine. but we're definitely getting a bit of relief from yesterday's intense temperatures today around the bay shoreline. mid 70s low 80s with full sunshine. and then along the coast. we do have a bit of a marine layer here. we will find temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 60s for daytime highs. still have a beach hazard statement along our coast for that active ocean current. let's check in with amanda, see how the commute is going this morning. >> good morning drew. here at the top of the hour we're going to take a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the backup is just past the parking lot. at this point. highway four to the city that's going to take you about 51 minutes and then down to the south bay are two 8017 cam showing nothing in your way. there it is. 602 we're heading back to the desk. >> thanks, amanda. happening today. former president trump is attending a fundraiser here in the bay area. it's one of his first public events on the west coast since his conviction on 34

charges last week. abc7 news reporter gloria rodriguez joins us live in pacific heights. gloria, it's going to be a very expensive event. >> it is going to be very expensive. and you know, today, former president donald trump will be here in pacific heights as part of his fundraising tour. tech billionaire david sax and his wife are co-hosting the event here. even in deep blue san francisco, this could be a solid atm for republicans. on the other side, organizers behind the inflatable trump chicken are bringing the bird out for the former president's visit. this is video from 2018, and we spoke to one organizer who said the group was inspired after former president trump was convicted of 34 felonies last week. we thought, hey, we're in a unique position. >> we have a chicken that's really large and we have a prison shirt. i think it's time to bring it out. so i just actually today, because we're doing a test inflation in went down into the basement where it's being stored on a pallet to

sort of take a look at it and see, does it have holes in it? has the shirt been covered in mold? and i'm happy to say it's ready to go. >> organizers of the anti-trump inflatables say they'll set sail with the bird from fisherman's wharf, passing by alcatraz and marina green and trump supporters plan to gather at marina green today, although he is not actually scheduled to be there. they are hoping that he will drop by, though live in san francisco. gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> thank you gloria. donald trump's visit to san francisco comes just a day after vice president kamala harris was here in the bay area. she made campaign fundraising stops in oakland and in san francisco, where she was met by protesters. we demand a cease fire. this demonstration was outside of an event in the mission yesterday, protesters voiced their opposition to the biden administration's support for israel and its war with hamas,

hoping that more and more people each day will realize that it is not only unacceptable and will be met with disruption. >> when you support and try to fund raise for an administration, facilitating a genocide. but you're also on the wrong side of history. >> both events, attended by vice president harris, were private. she didn't make any public statements. media was not allowed inside. >> in the north bay, cal fire crews worked all night on a fire that has burned close to napa valley's famed silverado trail. it started yesterday afternoon near saint helena, near the bell canyon reservoir and not far from many wineries and vineyards like mending wall and amana is also. this is also near the burn scar from the 2020 glass fire. so a lot of concern up there of course. >> yeah, reggie, the crystal fire has burned 60 acres and is at last check 65% contained. we know that it started around 145 yesterday afternoon during the bay area's heat wave near the 200 block of crystal springs road, again not far from the bell canyon reservoir. now,

crews battling the flames face temperatures of more than 100 degrees. five firefighters had to get medical attention. four of them were taken to the hospital. cal fire says the heat, combined with the steep terrain, made the fire fight difficult. one napa county resident says she saw a wall of flames heading in her direction. she got in her car and went to pick up. her parents, who also lived nearby, drove up the hill to get them and then called the neighbors that live up there, and then stopped by another neighbor that i knew was home. >> that i don't have their number just to say, get out now. >> everything's drying out, we started to see the end of may in the north bay. at least hear that fire activity really start to pick up. >> crews were able to make fast progress yesterday and forward progress was stopped last night. overnight cal fire said crews would focus on expanding their containment lines around the fire. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> kumasi thanks, amanda. well, we have been closely following

the student protests and demonstrations at college campuses across the country at stanford, 13 current and former students were arrested and taken to jail after taking over the school president's office. officials claim the building sustained extensive damage, including inflammatory graffiti on the walls. they say protesters shoved and injured a public safety officer yesterday. demonstrators rallied outside the jail, calling for the release of those arrested while back on campus. others blasted the university for removing their pro-palestinian encampment . >> i think that it's cowardly, they're retaliating against the entire encampment, even though they already arrested the students. so obviously it's a retaliatory action. >> the university issued a statement saying they are appalled by the actions of the group, adding that if any of the students arrested were seniors, they will not be allowed to graduate. >> eight developing news investigators in san francisco are working to find the person who vandalized city hall. mayor

london breed says she was the target of racist and sexist graffiti. >> this is not unfamiliar to me. i do deal with this every day, whether it's, you know, things that have said on social media as well as emails that i receive that describe me as exactly what was on this wall or even in front of my own home. >> the mayor says employees found the graffiti yesterday morning. the department of public works was quick to respond, as well as the sheriff's office. sfpd says they do have surveillance video of the incident. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins, taking an innovative approach to preventing crime last night, jenkins announced the new access to hope initiative. this fellowship offers young people mentorship and resources for career and professional development. jenkins says her office has seen a rise, particularly in juvenile victims in the past year, and she places some of the blame on the drug crisis that's plagued the city. >> my goal is to hopefully empower our young adults and our youth to never have to come in

plans to build student housing and low income housing on people's park. in april, the state supreme court made it clear the $312 million project will get the approval it needs. it would accommodate about 1100 students in more than 100 unhoused people who had been camping at the park. people who oppose the project want to preserve the park as a site for political activism. the park has been closed since early january. shipping containers have been blocking it, and surveillance cameras surround the park. back to you, kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. happening today? a crucial vote on san francisco's effort to bring a pair of pandas to the zoo. the board will take up whether to approve an exemption to city policy to allow the mayor to seek private donations to fund this project. that vote was postponed last month after some supervisors questioned if this exemption could create conflicts of interest for the mayor. the zoo is going to need some significant upgrades in order to host these pandas. the mayor thought she'd seal the deal

after a trip to china back in april, but not everyone is on board. a group is planning a protest because it says the zoo is, quote, crumbling and has other issues. a series of pop up drag performances returning to downtown san francisco today in honor of pride month, drag me downtown features performers at different venues each thursday from 5 to 7 p.m, the first happening today at harrington's bar and grill on front street. the next will be held at pabu on california street, and then the series continues on june 20th at third floor at the j hotel on clay street, which i told you i went to and it is fun. they have a rooftop. >> yeah, that is what you're talking about. that would be we should look into that. >> the last day is the one on okay. the 27th. got it. ten market restaurant. >> well, i myself cannot proclaim to be a drag queen. i can't say that i've walked in a drag. queens heels for the next few weeks. everybody's talking about jamie, a musical based on

the real life of a teenager who dreamed of becoming a drag queen, is playing here in san francisco. it's the first time we've ever had it here. he has to overcome something. many people in our community face discrimination and bullying. i spoke to some of the cast members about this show, including a drag queen that mentors jamie the musical. she even helped me into those heels. so take a look at 16 years old. >> he decided to come out as a drag queen. he made it happen. he went and found a producer, got his story told and that that story inspired the musical. phenomenal. that is. everybody's talking about jamie and katya. >> let's face it, it's your story. >> it is, you know, you know, once upon a time, there was a boy that did everything ten times faster and ten times louder than everybody else. and he was fearless and terrified and a genius and an idiot and a star. and yes, i am talking about myself, but i'm also talking about the star of our our show romelo, who is a generationally gifted talent. i feel like every night we're up

highs in the 80s and low 90s in the south bay heading along the peninsula. we'll go to 81 in san mateo, 84 in redwood city. so it is warm and sunny. 64 the high for half moon bay across the city today. we are going to stay in the 60s for most of the afternoon. 68 downtown, 67 for daly city, but south city, a little bit warmer at 73. we have some pockets of hot air in the north bay. 99 lakeport, 101 cloverdale. but cooler in novato at 8786. in sonoma, 76 the high in sausalito, the east bay today 70 and 8077. oakland 82. hercules will hit 83 in fremont and inland. today, we're about ten degrees cooler compared to yesterday afternoon. 96 in pittsburg, 90 in walnut creek, 93 in livermore. we're looking at the evening planner. early on. we have clear skies. we will likely see a little bit of fog returning with our marine layer along the coast late tonight, first thing tomorrow morning. so we'll keep that fog layer pretty close to the coast. but away from the coast we'll have clear skies overnight lows mainly in the 50s. now future tracker temperatures. we're calling it

into the city. and then we want to take you to some drive times highway four to the maze, 44 minutes a 21 minute drive to get from emeryville to san francisco, and then nine minutes from san francisco to sfo. back to you, reggie. >> thanks, amanda. this morning, cal fire crews continue to battle flames burning close to some napa county vineyards. the crystal fire has burned 60 acres north of saint helena near the silverado trail, close to the bell canyon reservoir. it is 65% contained. this is the first significant fire in wine country this year. it's near the burn scar from the 2020 glass fire. four firefighters were taken to the hospital for injuries related to the response and that steep, rocky terrain and in hot conditions. cal fire says they are expected to make a full recovery. >> happening today, the 2024 presidential campaign making a stop right here in the bay area, former president donald trump will be attending a fundraiser in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. abc seven news reporter gloria rodriguez in pacific heights live, where

the fundraiser is taking place later today. good morning, gloria. >> good morning. kumasi supporters are planning to gather to greet trump here in san francisco, but opponents are also planning to gather to show their opposition to the former president. the political news outlet puck news obtained an invitation to trump's pacific heights event today, and according to the invitation, tech billionaire david sacks and his wife are hosting the event, along with venture capitalist chamath palihapitiya. you a candidate running for oakland city council, is part of a group of trump supporters organizing a rally to greet him at san francisco's marina green this afternoon. >> in this rally, being just a group of us men and women, citizens, we the people who wanted to greet trump, donald trump coming to san francisco and let him know our love is there and our support is there. >> and on the other side, the organizers behind the inflatable

trump chicken are bringing the bird out of retirement for today's event. back in 2018, the chicken circled alcatraz wearing a prison shirt, and organizers of the anti trump inflatable are planning to set sail with the bird from fisherman's wharf today, passing by alcatraz and the marina green. and as far as that gathering today at marina green, trump is not scheduled to be there. but of course, supporters are hoping he will drop by. live in san francisco gloria rodriguez, abc seven news. >> gloria, thank you. with a little more than a month to go until the republican national convention, donald trump's so-called veepstakes is heating up. amanda has more on the list of potential running mates. yeah, reggie. >> sources say the trump campaign has formally requested vetting information from potential running mates. that includes north dakota governor doug burgum, ohio senator j.d. vance and florida senator marco rubio. if rubio is chosen as trump's running mate, he may have to move out of florida. that's because a provision in the constitution potentially

bars the president and vice president from sharing the same home state, sources tell abc news campaign officials intensified their outreach last month while trump was on trial in his criminal hush money case. other candidates are likely to be considered for the job. trump campaign officials have also requested information from senator tim scott and congress members elise stefanik and ben carson. it's unclear how extensive the request to those candidates were. back to you at the desk, kumasi. >> thanks, amanda. developing news more than 30 people have died after an israeli airstrike hit a united nations run school in central gaza overnight. hospital officials say the school was housing displaced palestinian civilians. the israeli military says a hamas compound was operating inside that school. the white house released a joint statement with other world leaders. world leaders calling on hamas to close a cease fire deal and hostage deal, saying in part, quote, we commend the leaders of israel, as well as hamas, to

make whatever final compromises are necessary to close this deal and bring relief to the families of our hostages. as well as those on both sides of this terrible conflict, including the civilian populations. it's time for the war to end, and this deal is a necessary starting point. end quote. >> new developments, the effort to recall current oakland mayor xiang tao is inching closer to reality. members of the group called oakland united to recall shengtao, announced that they submitted more than 41,000 signatures on wednesday. that's about 17,000 more than required. organizers say their effort received support across oakland. >> they are tired, tired, tired, exhausted from this incompetent, dishonest mayor who's driving oakland into the ground. >> yes, mayor tao released a statement saying in part, we will not be distracted by the politics of out of town billionaires or special interests, and i will continue to work every day for oakland's

interests. i know we are stronger together for a new tool described as flying handcuffs will soon be used by san francisco police. >> put your hands behind your back. you're going to get rapped. no hospital. rap rap rap . >> abc seven news first demonstrated the bola wrap last year. the chronicle reports that specially trained san francisco police officers are going to be equipped with these lasso like restraint tools in the coming months. it shoots out 7.5ft of cord. it wraps around a person with two anchors that replicate fishing hooks. this is a non-lethal alternative to tasers, guns or batons. the makers of the bolawrap say that it's now being used by more than 1000 law enforcement agencies nationwide. >> california has secured a landmark settlement aimed at curbing the sale of ghost guns. ghost guns are untraceable, homemade weapons that can be built with kits that are sold online. attorney general rob bonta announced yesterday that three ghost gun manufacturers

are permanently banned from selling ghost guns. the ban also applies to parts that can be used to make the guns. under the settlement. the companies must also have their staff do firearm training in the south bay. >> be aware of your surroundings if you live in south san jose, police say they responded to several reports of mountain lion sightings. they say around 935 last night, residents saw mountain lion walking into the yards of some of the homes in the area of ella drive and war admiral way. if you look at that map, you can see that's only about a block or so away from great oaks park. police haven't said if the animal has been caught. >> a san jose program that once moved unhoused residents into motels will soon end, forcing people to think of where they're going to go next. the temporary housing access program housed people and help them get employed by the city. it was created in 2022 to temporarily help people get jobs, then eventually move them into permanent housing. the city will pay for the motel stays until

the end of the year. it's not clear how many people will have to move the theranos fraud case involving founder elizabeth holmes heading back to court next week. >> on tuesday, the ninth circuit court of appeals in san francisco will review the convictions of holmes and former company president sunny balwani in 2022. separate juries found the two guilty of defrauding investors in the now defunct blood testing company. holmes is currently serving an 11 year prison sentence. balwani received nearly 13 years. >> today, marks 80 years since allied troops stormed the beaches of normandy in what would be pivotal in defeating hitler and the in world war two. 2500 americans were killed in that operation. june 6th, 1944 today, normandy is hosting world leaders and the survivors now ranging between 96 and 107 years old. president biden and the first lady are attending the commemoration. >> he'll talk about the stakes of that moment and existential

>> it is now 644 developing news in hunter biden's felony gun trial. the prosecution could rest its case as early as today. in court yesterday, two of biden's exes testified about his drug use during their relationships with him. the president's son has been charged with three felonies from the purchase of a gun in 2018. prosecutors are trying to prove the president's son illegally

purchased a colt revolver while he was allegedly addicted to drugs. they also say hunter biden lied about his addiction on federal paperwork. >> the senate has failed to advance legislation that would defy the right to access contraceptives nationwide. the right to contraception act fell short of the 60 votes needed to move forward. the bill was put forward by a group of senate democrats following the 2022 supreme court decision that overturned roe versus wade. republicans dismissed the legislation as a political ploy. >> we're going to see democrats engage in a show vote, and there's a reason for that show vote, because democrats in the senate, every one of them, their views on abortion are extreme and radical. >> this is not a show vote. it's a show us who you are. vote >> democrats are looking to put reproductive care at the front of their agenda. leading up to the november elections, all but two republicans present voted against the measure. >> new developments the world

health organization confirmed the first death related to bird flu. it happened in mexico. it's the first human case of the h5n1 strain of bird flu. this strain is different than the strain currently circulating in livestock in the u.s, which infected three dairy workers, the w.h.o. says the mexico patient was a 59 year old with no history of exposure to poultry or other animals, so the source of the person's infection is unknown. >> prince william gave an update on his wife's condition during an event commemorating the 80th anniversary of d-day. in a video circulating on social media, he's heard telling a veteran that kate middleton is getting better. he also said she would have loved to be at the commemoration for d-day. the princess of wales is undergoing treatment for cancer. she announced her diagnosis back in march. she stayed out of the public eye since in vallejo, there could be a big change on the horizon for cal maritime academy officials are proposing a merger with the california state university system. >> it's due to declining enrollment, according to the

csu, cal maritime enrollment declined by 31, going from 1100 students in 2016 to just 761 students last year. they believe a merger with cal poly san luis obispo would be a good fit. we spoke with congressman john garamendi about the academy's challenges. >> cal maritime has been unable to really advertise its attributes. they are very significant. i mean, you could go to that school four years later, you have $100,000 a year job on a ship or on a shore. >> cal maritime is one of only six maritime academies in the nation that produce us coast guard licensed mariners. it's been around for nearly 100 years. the csu board of trustees will vote on the integration in november. >> some state farm customers might be able to keep their home insurance after all, according to the chronicle, some homeowners received notice that they can keep their coverage, but the policy cannot include fire damage. the customers reportedly must sign up for that

fire insurance through the california fair plan, which is a state created but privately run insurer of last resort. the company announced back in march it would not renew some 30,000 policies, largely because of fire and earthquake risk. >> it's our morning money report. starting in august, ebay will no longer accept american express as a form of payment. san jose based ebay says a credit card company's fees for processing transactions are, quote, unacceptably high. the national retail federation says the fee can be as high as 4% on premium rewards cards like amex. the partnership between ebay and amex ends august 17th. nvidia is now the second largest public company in the us, right behind microsoft. the company's value surpassed $3 trillion, inching past apple's $2.99 trillion market cap. nvidia makes artificial intelligence chips, and its headquarters are right here in santa clara. the

forecast today inland it's still warm but about a 10 degrees drop in our daytime highs compared to yesterday. will stay in the 90s with full sunshine around the bay. shoreline will have the sunny skies, upper 70s to lower 80s and along the coast. it's a mix of sun and clouds and daytime highs in the low and mid 60s, so heat begins to ease. that's the headline today 80s and 90s in the south bay 89, san jose, about 91. in morgan hill, along the peninsula will hit 84 for redwood city, 83 los altos, san mateo 8160s for half moon bay in pacifica across the city. today, it is going to feel cooler compared to yesterday or the day before. most of us will remain in the 60s for daytime highs in the north bay. we do have some pockets of hot air from lakeport to cloverdale to ukiah 90 to 186, though in sonoma, 84 san rafael feels a lot better in sausalito today at 7689. in vallejo, the east bay 70s and 80s, 77 in oakland, 80 in richmond, about 81 in newark and then inland. we're about ten degrees cooler today compared to
