open. >> also tonight, an orange county judge is putting an end to a strike involving academic workers at six universities. city of california campuses. the uc system sought a restraining order against the workers, claiming the strike was causing damage to students. education. uaw workers began striking over the university system's response to pro-palestinian protests on campus. >> good evening. i'm julian glover and i'm dan ashley. >> thanks for joining us there is a new wrinkle in the war on junk fees here in california. a law passed last year to tackle the problem has ended up hurting a very important industry. talking about restaurants now, lawmakers are trying to make things right. >> abc seven news reporter tim johns is looking into why this change is so important to restaurants here in the bay area . >> a new law banning so-called junk fees across the state july first could soon be getting modified. on thursday, two bay area state senators introduced a new bill that clarifies how restaurants would be required to deal with the junk fee ban. in

the new bill, restaurants will still be able to charge things like service fees to customers, as long as they're clearly explained to diners ahead of their meal. >> that sb 478 was not intended to affect the restaurants, bars and food service providers that had a clearly listed, transparent service charge or surcharge or additional fee. >> the original bill was passed last year, but concern over restaurant fees started just a few weeks ago. i'm here at the palette tea house at san francisco's ghirardelli square, where they already include verbiage about service charges on their menus. however, they do tell me that the new law has still caused confusion among them and their staff. >> we know about it for a while, but exactly where they apply to a restaurant or not is nobody really knows for certain. >> dennis loooooong is the palettes general manager. he believes the new legislation is needed. dennis says restaurants like his rely on service fees to make ends meet, and the possibility of getting rid of them would have been detrimental

. he also tells me the money collected directly benefits his staff in a more equal way. >> so if a charge is considered a restaurant income and we can distribute that at our discretion. so we were able to tip our dishwasher, our line cooks and everybody in the restaurant will get benefit from it. and given the difficult time many restaurants have had recovering since the pandemic, thomas says she too, is thankful lawmakers are stepping in to make things clear once and for all. >> we just don't want to leave a law up to having it to be litigated to figure it out. >> lawmakers say they hope to pass a new bill on an accelerated timeline in san francisco. tim johns abc seven news. >> more than 60 firefighters battled a big grass fire near brentwood today. the blaze took off about 11 a.m. near albers court and deer valley road. it quickly went to three alarms, fire officials say charring 22 acres before its forward progress was stopped. it's now 95% contained, so they made

pretty quick work of this with no injuries, no structures lost. a cal fire is investigating the cause of this fire. the crystal fire meantime burning between saint helena and calistoga is also 95% contained. it scored 60 acres since it started on wednesday afternoon. one outbuilding was destroyed, but no homes burned for injured. firefighters were treated at a hospital and released. they're doing fine. >> we have some new developments in a case of racist threats into a popular dog walkers home in san francisco, we have some newly released video right here, and also screenshots of a person of interest. police want to talk with this person who they say may have some information about this case. terry williams says two threatening packages were sent to his home in april and may. black community leaders in san francisco are enraged over racist and sexist graffiti that appeared scrawled in front of city hall earlier this week. the graffiti appeared to be targeted towards mayor london breed. abc

seven news reporter suzanne fawn has the angry reaction from those local leaders. >> the word is sheer. there's two vulgar. vicious. that's right. and vile. >> amos brown, the president of the n naacp, is disgusted by the graffiti found at city hall. mayor london breed has not shared exactly what it said, but she says it's directed at her. on friday, black community leaders said the words out loud and denounced them. >> it's a racist slur. it's an offense of word. it hurts. it's hurtful. racial slur. today i think they crossed the line. >> i think the words they use was very egregious. i think it was very harmful and hurtful. and it's not about politics or protest. it's personal. this is disgusting. >> there's no reason why our community, our mayor, our city workers have to walk by that. >> yes, we are more we are more

than that. multiple city employees who came into work early wednesday discovered the graffiti. >> they quickly removed it. the san francisco sheriff's office says it's launched an investigation and is reviewing video surveillance footage, and it has increased foot patrols in and around city hall. various community leaders are speaking out to voice their frustration. >> this is the mayor of our city. she is a black woman. it is an assault on her and all black women. we don't take it lightly. we can't take it lightly. we can't let whoever did that get away with it, in the sense that we are going to be quiet about it. >> supervisor catherine stefani released a statement saying, quote, i'm disgusted by the racist and sexist graffiti at city hall this week. this crime is reprehensible, and i hope the perpetrators are found and held accountable to the fullest extent possible in san francisco , suzanne phan abc seven news. >> the downtown district in the

bay area's largest city has a new commitment from local leaders. 24 recent police academy graduates will shadow patrol officers in san jose. this was just announced this afternoon, and as abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes explains, this plan is getting both praise and some questions from downtown business owners. >> positive changes are being added daily to downtown san jose . >> it's vibrant as it has not been in a long time. we're standing here at the mural that was just now opened about a week ago. >> alex cetinski, a ceo of the san jose downtown association. he said art and the many new block parties have brought vibrancy and also safety. >> the more foot traffic you have in an area, the safer people feel, and safety has been a concern for many downtown businesses and residents. >> now, the city says it's responding to 24 recent police academy graduates are now assigned to downtown san jose as field training officers. >> it's 15 years since we last saw the field training program or fto in downtown, and i'm

excited to share with all of you that our recruits are back in this area. >> interim chief paul joseph said the program is essential for the department's downtown staffing and offers new training opportunities. while some businesses are encouraged by the news, others have reservations. >> the thought of newly trained officers walking around, potentially if they don't have, like social workers or someone with them, to ensure the safety of the people that they're dealing with. i worry about the people of downtown. >> business owner wendy bravo said she'd like the city to invest more in social services. >> people are really struggling and we really want to see the city provide more services for people that actually do something for them, and invest that care in walking around and checking on people and making sure they're okay, and also checking on the businesses to make sure that they're okay. >> we brought up those concerns with mayor matt mehan at the announcement of the program launch. >> many of the behaviors that people observed downtown and in other parts of the city that make them feel unsafe are not always crimes. and that's why

it's so important that we expand the number of treatment beds, and that when we do have folks who are committing lower level nonviolent crime that has a mental health nexus, whether it's addiction or some other form of mental illness that we're getting people the help that they need. >> one thing everyone with a stake in downtown san jose agrees on is that they're committed to keeping and adding to its vibrancy in san jose. zach fuentes, abc seven news. >> well, caltrain service will be shut down this weekend all weekend, so the agency can test its new electric trains. there will be some busses running between the san jose diridon palo alto and millbrae stations, where riders can transfer then to bart. the shutdown is a part of caltrans work to electrify the railroad with trains that are supposed to be faster, cleaner, and more efficient. the new trains are set to roll out this september. >> it is the final weekend of horse racing at golden gate fields after all of these years. the mayor of berkeley now says it's time to think big about what comes next for that racetrack and that prized piece

of property. abc seven news reporter anser hassan sat down with the mayor to discuss redevelopment plans for this really remarkable piece of land. >> when the last horse crosses the finish line this weekend, a new era and new opportunities will begin. >> now's the time for us to imagine something different in golden gate fields, berkeley mayor jesse arreguin says this is a big opportunity to develop one of the most prized properties in the entire bay area. >> he says the city's last plan around golden gate fields dates back to 1986, which allowed for a hotel and a composting facility. >> i think we can all agree that a composting facility is not the highest best use, so that very, very valuable real estate. so now it's 2024. we're going to take a fresh look. >> one third of the 140 acres are in berkeley, two thirds in albany. the mayor says the two cities are working on a joint redevelopment plan. some possibilities include keeping much of it as open space, housing and commercial developments, even a hospital. but whatever they decide, there are huge obstacles ahead. >> we're going to have to amend our general plans to allow for

whatever is going to be at golden gate fields. in fact, let's go to the voters in albany to approve whatever plan, even if the area is rezoned. >> there are a number of state and regional stakeholders that will be involved in the approval process. also, the cities don't own the land, although they do have regulatory approval over it. and then big challenges like traffic and in this case, sea level rise. >> all of the area that that is in berkeley and in albany, that's low land was all marsh and it's filled. it will liquefy in any kind of an earthquake. >> robert chast is with the environmental group citizens for east bay parks, and the former mayor of albany. he says it would require enormous amounts of diking to prepare and protect the land for housing. he adds, if it gets that far, it will likely end up in court. >> there would be a fight over this and the environmental community would not be in favor of those kinds of development proposals and would would resist, and there'd be a be a knock down drag out that would it would just never happen.

move to las vegas while they're at it again. >> and that means abc seven news sports anchor casey pratt is out there with them at the coliseum, all decked out in black as tradition. casey a lot of eager fans behind you there. >> salvatore. yeah. once again, here we are in the parking lot chanting sell the team! uh- maybe nobody's listening, but they're still trying as hard as they possibly can. and this is a day that is a very conflicted day for a's fans because they want to be here. they want to show up, but they don't want to give money to the owner. so they've created another reverse boycott. they know it will not be as big as the last one, but they're going to be here tailgating, going to this game maybe one last time for many of them. and knowing that they at

four races. >> we've been coming here since 2003. we camp right over the 50 acres. >> 50 acres is the rv camp where steve rexford and family from novato are settling in for three days of racing. >> i bring the whole family and then all my friends and my son's bringing his friends now. so there's like eight, ten of us. we just have a good time and enjoy the race weekend. i mean, come on, this is perfect. >> honestly, it's just the community here. i think that's why i love it at sonoma in california more than anywhere else, because everyone's just here for a party and a good time. you know, you meet so many cool people in the pit. >> cars are getting a quick once over by crews before returning to battle on the track. >> we're battling for the points lead, so it's been really good for us so far this season. >> we found 13 year old cameron caraway from castro valley checking things out. we first met cam last year when he was becoming a rising star on the junior stock car circuit. he fully expects to be racing here one day. >> i'm still following my dream of hopefully becoming a future nascar cup series driver. still going strong for it. it's always

>> lots of fun stuff and temperatures will be more comfortable for some of those inland locations like you are headed to sonoma raceway. it will be about 78 degrees tomorrow. let's take a look outside and show you live doppler seven. we've got clouds along the coast and they're starting to spill in. breezy conditions helped cool things down in san francisco. winds are 26mph, but check out oakland gusting to 30mph. and in napa, 31mph. tomorrow, winds will pick up again. it will be breezy to windy and you can see the winds blowing the palm trees here in san francisco. there as we check out the bay bridge in the background, san francisco has dropped to 58 degrees. oakland 65, hayward 69. san jose 76. redwood city still hanging on to 80 degrees in half moon bay is cooler at 57, and we're seeing some of those low clouds move in here as it will show you a live view from the east bay hills camera, and that has helped cool things down quite a bit. also so for some of the north bay locations like santa rosa, petaluma and napa all at 64 degrees, and we're seeing some low 70s in fairfield, concord,

livermore, at 74. so here's what you can expect with the weather headlines. we're going to see fog and low clouds overnight. and then tomorrow the cooling trend continues not as drastic. we'll come down a few degrees for most locations under hazy skies and also some high clouds. but then we'll see sunshine build and warmth returns to the forecast and warmer days monday and tuesday with 90s for inland areas. so the future cast shows those clouds moving in overnight tomorrow will wake up to those low clouds. this area of green we could even see some possible drizzle along the coastline and some of our beaches. and then you notice the high clouds pass through. we'll see better, clearer conditions on sunday. and so temperatures might come up just a touch for some areas. overnight lows will generally be near the mid 50s for the most part. san francisco 53, san jose 57 degrees and a little bit cooler in the north bay and then temperatures tomorrow are closer to average. san jose hitting a

high of 80 along the lower part of the peninsula. comfortable in redwood city, 74, but still cool at the beaches. you notice near 60 degrees downtown san francisco 64 napa. tomorrow will be 77, santa rosa 86. and in the east bay, numbers will range from upper 60s to mid 70s towards fremont, our warmest locations will be in the low to mid 80s like antioch, brentwood at 84 degrees. so it is going to cool down just a touch more comfortable for many locations, except it is a bit chilly at the beaches when the wind blows. so tomorrow hazy and breezy. temperatures range from 60 to low or near 60 to low 80s. not too much change on sunday, maybe a bump up for some spots and then monday, tuesday, wednesday. that's when high pressure builds. we'll see 90s for the inland areas. lots of sunshine all week long, but the breeze will start to cool things down towards the end of the workweek. >> we can handle the low 90s no

new jobs joined the economy last month. today's stocks dipped, but all three indices are up for the week. the dow lost 87 points today. the nasdaq went down below a 40 and the s&p 500 dipped about six points. well, americans paychecks grew at a faster pace for the first time in months. last month, workers made an average of almost $35 an hour. that's up 4% from a year ago. it's great news for employees, but it could also point to more pressure from inflation. higher labor costs could lead to higher prices. >> well, toys are not just for kids. adults seem to be spending more of their income on toys. a new report found 43% of adults bought themselves a toy in the past year. that amounted to $1.5 billion in the first four months of the year. out spending. any other age group, including preschoolers. no kidding. their favorites were collectible trading cards, legos, sports toys, and plushie stuffed animals. interesting. well, we

now know exactly where nintendo plans to open at san francisco's union square. according to permits filed with the city earlier this week, the new store will be at 331 powell street. it's an 11,000 square foot retail space that's part of the westin saint francis hotel. the union square store is close to the size of nintendo's flagship us store, which is in new york city. the only other location in the united states, the san francisco store, is expected to open next year. >> june, as you know, is pride month. so will san francisco's harvey milk plaza finally get renovated? >> it's taken 24 years, 24 years. >> yeah, not continuous trying, but like it's a series of efforts. >> it's been on again and off again for decades. why there's now hope on the horizon. >> and a reminder game two of the nba finals will be on sunday right here on abc seven. the mavericks trying to bounce back against the celtics after a dominating game one coverage starts at 4:30 p.m. it will be

is harvey milk plaza, home of the rainbow flag building. >> a better bay area means honoring the people who make the places like that plaza so special. the community has envisioned a more desirable plaza honoring the legacy of the late civil rights leader. >> an abc seven news reporter, lyanne melendez, is here to tell us that, you know, nothing is given. but leanne, there are a lot closer maybe to renovating the plaza. >> yeah, i think if you ask them, they'll say we're this close. we'll see, we'll see. with that said, the renovation of that plaza has been controversial. some are in favor, others not so much. not only will it be costly, but getting to this point has taken years. and so are we. surprised? well, it's the san francisco way, 1961 president john f kennedy made a bold proposition to congress, landing a man on

the moon and returning him safely to the earth. then in 1969, this happened. >> it's one small step for man >> you know the rest. so we have to ask ourselves, how is it that it took only eight years to put a man on the moon, yet it has taken more than 24 years to renovate harvey milk plaza in the castro district. >> you know how it is in this town. you know i mean, everybody has an opinion about everything as activist cleve jones and others reminded us, democracy is what defines us, but it often means delaying projects. >> in 1985, the castro muni station was named harvey milk plaza after the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in california. it wasn't until the year 2000 that there was a call to design a new plaza, but the on again, off again project never materialized. it's taken 24

years. >> 24 years. yeah. not continuous trying, but like it's a series of efforts. but this effort that started in 2016 is certainly moved to the farthest along. >> that's brian springfield of friends of harvey milk plaza, a group behind the most recent attempt to redesign the plaza. when muni announced it had to build a new, state of the art elevator on the plaza that set the wheels in motion for the overall project, jones, who was at milk's side during the many rallies and marches, says the project is worthy of a trailblazer. >> this was harvey milk's neighborhood. harvey milk was part of creating what we know as the castro today, which is known all across the world. and when visitors come here, it's a little bit underwhelming to come to harvey milk plaza and see this. >> the design is intentional. here's what it looks like now as you enter the plaza. the updated version will have a pedestal at the entrance and a meeting place

to encourage activism. which milk himself mastered. >> and at the other end of the site is the medallion that says hope. and that's in this park like setting. >> that area will be surrounded by 11 trees representing the 11 months that milk was in office before he was murdered. there will be a central terrace at the base of the rainbow flag created by the late gilbert baker, kathy amendola, who offers walking tours of the castro, says people from all over the world connect with that flag. >> it's such an iconic symbol globally and we just want to preserve that part of our history. >> the stairs that lead to the muni station will be pushed back, and once you enter the station, there will be an area honoring milk's legacy. this is what they have now, a few photos without any real context. as muni passengers seem not to notice the new design will be somewhat similar to what sfo has at the harvey milk terminal, but not everyone is on board.

there's a small group that wants to make minor changes without demolishing the current plaza. >> our problem here in the city right now is too much money. we've had a doubling of the budget. we need. this money is. it's. yes. don't spend the money on this. it's not community led. what's community led is to preserve this. >> still, the money has been coming in from private donations and state and federal funds, but nothing close to the 35 million needed to complete the work until mayor london breed included the project as part of a much larger infrastructure bond. are you optimistic that it's going to pass in november? >> you never know. i mean, the voters are cranky and they have good reason to be cranky, but i'm certainly hoping they'll vote for this bond because it's really, really important. we i'm hopeful it'll get through the board of supervisors, but we're not there yet, so we can't take anything for granted. >> but the word hope seems to resonate with those behind the project who have already promised a delivery date 2028.

>> i'll see you there in 2028. >> even jones remembers he was once told the project would never happen in his lifetime. >> now, cleve, this will happen eventually, but you probably won't be here to see it. >> ha ha. >> again, everything will depend on voters passing that bond in november, which includes not only that renovation, but other big projects. if it doesn't pass, i think it's back to the drawing board. and the reason for that is that we here in san francisco already have another bond, a school bond, and that's a big one, that one only passes. you only need 55% of the vote for that school bond. this one, which is not a school bond, requires a lot more. 66. two thirds. yeah exactly. so we'll see. thanks, liane. >> appreciate it. >> well, tomorrow the pink triangle installation gets underway at san francisco's twin peaks, all in honor of pride month. the triangle covers nearly an acre, and it takes hundreds of volunteers to get it

>> federal prosecutors wrapped up their case against the president's son, hunter biden, today in his criminal trial. they called up two more witnesses to convince the jury that hunter biden lied about his drug use on a gun purchase application. his own daughter took the stand today, giving a tearful testimony when asked about her father's battle with addiction to crack cocaine, president joe biden tells abc news he will accept the verdict regardless of what it is, and has no plans to pardon his son if he is convicted. >> it's been nearly two months since o.j. simpson died, and now, as is standard protocol after a death, the fbi has released its files on him. >> it's 475 pages of documents. and reporter carlos granda from our sister station in los angeles went through them. >> it was the so-called trial of the century. and now we're learning how some of the evidence was gathered. the documents released today mostly focus on the investigation. it shows the fbi was very interested in the rare bruno mali shoes that were worn by the

murderer. detectives actually visited italy to research the manufacturing and distribution of these shoes. >> what? probably the shoes issue is about is that because they were rare shoes and there wasn't any direct evidence of o.j. at the crime scene that they were trying to maybe match up some fibers that may have been left by shoes that he was wearing at the crime scene with these rare shoes that are made out there in italy. so maybe they were trying to make that kind of connection. i don't think they made it, though, in the end, because we never heard about that in the trial. >> hundreds of other pages show details about the collection and testing of forensic evidence from the crime scene. one page shows a number of fibers recovered from the infamous white ford bronco after all of that, o.j. simpson was acquitted of the murders of ron goldman and nicole brown simpson. the documents also include a memo warning at the time that due to the intense media interest in captioned matter and the potential prejudicial impact that public dissemination could have on pending criminal proceedings, the following information should be handled on

made it here in about 14 minutes, just in time for the sports cast. we did our 6 p.m. news hit at the top of the show with all the loud fans screaming behind me. now we're in a more serene environment because the game has begun. at raymond park, the oakland ballers are underway . it's an interesting day, though, because, you know, these fans are trying to show up and do something to prove a point, but they don't want to tell anybody how to enjoy these types of days. these could be their last days of oakland a's baseball. some came here to monte park, some are staying at the coliseum. >> yeah, it's kind of a tricky situation, especially for the people that are going to the a's game because none of them want to put a single dollar in the pocket of team owner john fisher. yet they're not going to have that many more days to enjoy the athletics in oakland. so kind of mixed feelings there. >> yeah. they knew they would never be able to replicate what they did with the historic reverse boycott. but they wanted to give fans an excuse to go out and enjoy one last a's game. if they chose to go to the coliseum or just stay in the parking lot
