when one door closes, another might open at golden gate fields what it could turn into as the last horse races get underway. plus from another, nascar weekend is back in the north bay and the stands are expected to be packed. good morning everybody. it's saturday, june 8th, and we've been talking about this june gloom. that's right. >> the cool down that really gripped much of the bay area yesterday. it was some gusty winds. it was sunny but boy a lot of temperatures dropped considerably. and today our inland valleys will certainly cool off a bit. there's a look at live doppler seven. our visible image shows that the fog is with us, certainly at the coast. even a little drizzle, but around the outer edges it's brightening up a bit, but we're not going to have a total blue sky today because we have a system working overhead throughout the weekend. it is 58 in oakland, 64 in san jose, where it is sunny and looking at

our exploratorium camera with the gray sky. it is in the upper 50s in santa rosa. so compared to 24 hours ago, the cooldown continues as much as 4 to 7 degrees. cooler from livermore to concord. and right now the winds. not much of a factor, but they'll continue to build throughout the day today, and that's going to allow for temperatures to top out in the lower 80s under partly cloudy skies inland near 70 along the bay shore, with the breezy winds and a lot of cloud cover at the coast. so we'll talk about brighter skies and a warm up coming up in a few minutes. stephanie. >> all right, lisa, thank you. now to a big change in the admissions process at one of the most prestigious universities in the country, stanford will once again require applicants to take the sat or act. the requirement was dropped four years ago. abc7 news reporter lena howland spoke with students who have mixed reactions. on friday. stanford following suit behind harvard, yale and dartmouth, deciding to reinstate standardized test score requirements during the admissions process. >> the pendulum has swung all

the way. the other direction, and the narrative once again, is , doggone it, i guess we need these tests. >> that's adam ingersoll, co-founder of compass education, a national provider for test prep and academic tutoring. he says the school first went test optional in 2020 because of public health concerns. the university said in a statement on friday. the renewed testing requirement will allow stanford to consider the fullest array of information in support of each student's application. they add a review of their policy, also found test scores are an important predictor of academic performance at stanford. >> they're simply saying that we think more information is better and we want to be trusted to consider everything that is available about a student's academic preparedness. >> though many students say that explanation isn't good enough if you're mad because, like, you think that the quality of student is getting worse, then like you can say that and say why you think that allen

delaware is a first generation college student coming from a low income family, he was part of stanford's first class of students that weren't required to submit test scores. >> you don't really need to do good on that test to be able to do good in school. >> i don't see that there's like this huge like need for it. given that like the classes that have been here afterwards, like with no requirement, are clearly like very capable, very smart. >> carmen davalos was part of the last class of students required to submit test scores. still he doesn't think it's fair to add the requirement back in. >> i'm pretty confused about it, to be honest, because i. i have heard a lot of like the criticism that sat and act ask act as like for their barrier of entry for like certain like populations, like people of color. >> stanford says this applies to all students currently finishing 10th grade and going into 11th grade in the fall. they will continue to be test optional for the future. class of 2029, applying this fall at stanford. lena howland, abc seven news an

orange county judge is putting an end to a strike involving academic workers at six university of california campuses. >> the uc system sought a temporary restraining order against the workers. it claimed the strike was causing damage to students. education. uaw workers began striking over the uk's response to pro-palestinian protests on campus. the union president is vowing to continue the legal fight. an update in the east bay. a brush fire near brentwood is now 95% contained and has burned more than 22 acres. it started at 11 yesterday morning near albers court and deer valley road. firefighters remained on scene overnight, trying to knock down the flames. thankfully, no injuries were reported and no structures were lost. the cause is not known this morning. this is the last weekend for horse racing at golden gate fields and berkeley's mayor is thinking ahead. he says it's a big opportunity to develop one of the most prized properties in

the bay area. in collaboration with albany, the two cities are working on a joint redevelopment plan, and it could include open space, housing and commercial development. even a hospital. >> now it's 2024, we're going to take a fresh look. >> whatever the cities decide, they will need voter approval. any development faces challenges, including rising sea level, even if it goes according to plan, it could be 5 to 7 years before construction begins . california lawmakers are taking another route to make psychedelic treatment possible after the fda shot down the authorized use of mdma, they're now introducing a bill to allow limited use for therapeutic purposes. lawmakers want to decriminalize the medical use of psilocybin, which is found in psychedelic mushrooms. the legalized use would only be for military veterans and first responders in just three counties san francisco, santa cruz and san diego. the aim is to treat work induced

post-traumatic stress disorder. now there's a growing battle at the state capitol over the best way to tackle rising retail theft. there are dueling plans in the works. one is a proposed ballot measure. the other is a package of bills to crack down on theft. the package would toughen penalties for certain crimes and make it easier for law enforcement to arrest and charge suspects. the ballot measure would do a lot of the same things, but it would also change prop 47, which is a landmark criminal justice reform act that passed a decade ago. the ballot measure has the support of republicans and mayors in san francisco and san jose. but democrats at the state capitol still aren't sold. here's what the governor had to say. >> it's just i think there's a need to have it on the ballot. i have something on the ballot that doesn't actually achieve the goals that are intended, while i do something that can't be done legislatively with more flexibility. i think it's a better approach to governing. >> if passed, the bills would go into effect immediately. the secretary of state's office is

verifying signatures for this ballot measure, and it will likely be up for a vote in november. new developments now in a series of racist threats sent to a dog walker's home here in san francisco, you're looking at video that was released by police. it shows a person of interest who may have information about this case. terry williams says two threatening packages were sent to his home near alamo square in april. in may, a fire destroyed the house he shares with his parents. now, police say the fire investigation is separate from the racist packages. this morning, san jose police officer is on the road to recovery after three life saving surgeries over the past five weeks. mayor matt mehan and the police department celebrated officer jaime arredondo as he was discharged from the hospital. arredondo is credited with saving a mother and her children. last month, he and another officer were shot while they tried to stop a man who was breaking into a hotel room. the other officer had minor injuries and the suspect

was arrested. the downtown district and san jose want to reinstate the police field training officers program. 24 recent police academy graduates will be shadowing patrol officers in downtown san jose. now. this program is a way for newly graduated officers to rotate different beats around the city, and this is the first time downtown will be in that rotation. >> just 15 years since we last saw the field training program, or fto in downtown. and i'm excited to share with all of you that our recruits are back in this area. >> safety has been a concern for many downtown businesses and residents. the city says this is how they're responding to those concerns. as we head to break, let's check in with lisa. >> all right. good morning to you. 53 degrees here in the city. you can see all the cloud cover some haze. it's 61 down at the airport with some sunshine. it's a cooler day today. the breezy winds will be with us. and we'll see a mix of clouds and sun. but it's a brighter sunday, a warmer monday. we'll

apps in the hamas led attack on october 7th. according to israeli officials, their ages range from 21 to 40 years old. israeli forces say they're prepared for this operation for weeks. >> israeli forces have been preparing for this rescue mission for weeks. they are underwent intensive training. they risked their lives to save the lives of our hostages >> this morning, israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu visited the hostages in the hospital. israel's operation today is the largest recovery of hostages alive since the war began. seven have been rescued, so far. also new this morning, hospital officials say at least 94 palestinians died during fighting in that same area where these hostages were rescued. new this morning, harvey weinstein's

lawyers are appealing that he did not get a fair trial when he was convicted of rape in los angeles. his conviction was in 2022, and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison. the brief, filed yesterday, comes six weeks after his similar landmark conviction in new york was overturned, dropping a 23 year prison sentence there. now, the california appeal appellate judge argues that the trial judge wrongly excluded evidence in that case. happening now, you might have to make arrangements if you have plans to ride caltrain this weekend. service between san francisco and san jose will be shut down, so the agency can test its new electric trains. there will be some busses between the san jose diridon palo alto and millbrae stations. the busses will not run into san francisco. the shutdown is part of caltrans work to electrify the railroad with trains that are supposed to be faster, cleaner and more efficient. the new trains are set to roll out in september.

governor gavin newsom was in san francisco supporting a ballot measure to amend the california constitution to reaffirm gay marriage. the governor, along with several california political leaders, are supporting assembly constituted amendment number five. it's also known as ac five. the amendment would change the wording of what the state's constitution defines as marriage. the california constitution was changed in 2008, when it stated marriage was between a man and a woman, completely abolishes the traditional definition of marriage. >> this is so important and timely, especially during the month of pride, that when we celebrate, we often times need to reaffirm our commitment. >> california voters will decide this november. happening today, san francisco will hold its second annual juneteenth parade. it starts at 11 a.m. at market and spear streets and ends at fulton plaza, which is on fulton between hyde and larkin. there's also going to be a celebration

there. let's check in with for lisa the latest. >> all right stephanie you're right. good morning to you. we have the marine layer and a mix of mid and high level clouds. as a trough moves through over the weekend. but we are looking at those breezy winds once again. our visible image shows where all the cloud cover is. so it's beginning to thin out a little bit in the east bay, the south bay there even on the peninsula. but boy, a cooldown in store further cool down about five degrees cooler inland. and yesterday was in the low 70s at the airport. today not quite as mild and those breezy winds once again 53, san francisco 63 in hayward and 55 half moon bay, you can see the fringe of the fog there from walnut creek 59, santa rosa, 61, in concord and from our exploratorium cam are partly sunny and cool this morning. today breezy, a mix of clouds and sun. and then for next week, we're warmer, especially monday. tuesday will be the warmest day of the work week, so that's a look at the cloud cover beginning to thin out throughout the late afternoon. and then as we get into sunday we have more high and mid level clouds, but it's a sunnier afternoon still with
