race is getting another major player always live. >> abc seven news starts right now. >> just as one reaches containment, another comes in a new brush fire in the hills above pittsburgh. there have now been a string of fires since last weekend. firefighters from across the area stepping in once again today. there is now a hope that this busy start to the season is not a sign of what may be to come. good evening, i'm j.r. stone. while area fire crews tell us a risk of a major wildfire is low right now, it's clear we're already off to a busy start to the summer season. and tomorrow, santa rosa fire will declare it the official start of fire season. today, cal fire and contra costa firefighters teamed up to contain this wind driven brush fire. burning up a good chunk of chunk of that is of a hillside right by a group of homes in pittsburgh. it's the fifth fire, totaling more than 40 acres to have burned in the last eight

days. and the larger bay area. abc seven news reporter tara campbell has more on today's flames and what might be ahead sunday. >> crews fighting back flames and yet another early season wildfire, this one in pittsburgh spreading more than 50 acres. we lost everything. 40 years of history was lost today, destroying a local theater company's warehouse where we store all of our sets and props, costumes, sound equipment, lighting equipment went up in flames today for a reason. >> we don't know. they're investigating right now. we had a structure fire that quickly spread into the vegetation. >> uh- crews had to pivot and change their tactics from a structure fire response into a wildland response. >> the bay area, seeing a handful of grass fires over the past week, including the crystal fire near saint helena spreading 60 acres. crews battling 100 degree heat had the heat wave last week. >> we got more heat ahead of us in the next couple of days, and so there is a potential for, that the fuels across the

landscape are going to be receptive to fire. >> jason clay is the spokesperson for cal fire sonoma lake napa unit covering six counties. >> we've actually elevated our staffing levels a couple weeks early, so we have reached our peak staffing levels, and that's just based on the conditions and the activity that we've started to see recently. >> and cal fire units throughout the state are following suit. >> you'll start to see that all across california that we're amping up our staffing levels, and we're having all of our resources ready to respond to fires. >> meanwhile, in santa rosa, monday marks the official start of the wildfire season with just the conditions, with how dry things are, the increase in fire activity, that prompted the declaration, division chief paul lowenthal says the risk of major wildfire is below normal for now, expecting the wet winter to make a major impact this season. >> fortunately, with how much rainfall we did get, that will help keep our heavier fuels. our brush, our timber, not as receptive to that fire spread, but i do definitely think that

there were a handful of sideshows in the east bay, including one right in front of the grand lake theater, and you saw some involved in firework activity. the sideshows in the east bay stretched from emeryville to oakland and south to san leandro, and a similar scene in san francisco. some though, might say this one was more intense as the car was engulfed in flames along the embarcadero. this sideshow happened just after 2 a.m. right next door to the iconic ferry building. police say it started to break up once officers arrived. no telling, though, how long that car was on fire and today graffiti could be seen on the side of pier one, which is right next door to the ferry building and the area where the sideshow happened. a second one of these happened at valencia and cesar chavez street in san francisco. police responded, but say no arrests were made. we make it our mission every day here at abc7 to find the things helping to build a better bay area, and we make sure to highlight those breakthroughs in

our communities. tonight, an uplifting story of support in oakland for an ice cream vendor that was brutally attacked while out on the job. abc seven news reporter lena howland shows you how the video of the attack turned into a sell out day. >> it was only two weeks ago when 50 year old felipe ramos batista was crossing the street when three masked people ran up with guns drawn in this surveillance video circulating social media, one suspect knocks the ice cream vendor to the ground and then the group runs off with some of his belongings. jose batista says he felt right there and then that he was going to be dead. batista is a father originally from guatemala, who says he just moved here from san diego. he had only been working as an ice cream vendor for 45 days before this attack. >> when i saw the video was just awful. >> enter christian fragoso after seeing the video, he teamed up with a friend to track the ice cream vendor down. >> sometimes when people get

robbed, they don't have no one. you know, no one to get help from. so we wanted to step up and help them. >> and boy did they by inviting the entire community to come by. batista out on sunday. one ice cream at a time. even oakland firefighters stopped by and waited in line in between calls because he has to provide for his family. >> he needs to put food on the table. he needs to have a roof, you know? so i'm just happy that we were able to help him out today in a matter of hours. >> he sold out close to 300 frozen treats, a handful of vendors also showed up to sell tacos. aguas frescas and more, only to give 100% of their proceeds over to batista contento feliz batista saying, i'm happy that they came here to lend me a hand and if this story sounds familiar, that's because you've heard it before. back in october, fragoso organized a similar buyout when a san francisco public works employee was caught on camera pushing

a special way. we like to get you ahead and on top of some of the storylines you'll be hearing about in the days to come. tonight, it's all about tech, starting with a big announcement expected from apple, the company's annual worldwide developers conference starts tomorrow. multiple reports indicate the announcements will include advancements in series ai capabilities. although the software is usually not available to users until the fall or later. apple is trying to keep up in the arms race with open ai and google, both of which held their announcement events last month. open ai is rumored to be collaborating with apple in some aspect of tomorrow's announcement.

certainly a to be continued there and also tomorrow, a major boost for a bay area company at the center of the ai boom. it will be the first day of trading for santa clara based nvidia, after a ten for one stock split. that means there are now ten times as many shares, but they'll cost one tenth of the price they did on friday when the split was initiated. and nvidia's share price has surged. more than 190% in the last year, putting it out of reach of many regular investors. abc seven news has long covered the ups and downs and of animal rights concerns at golden gate fields, and today horses ran their last race on that track. it's closing after 83 years of racing. a sad day for some. one fan drove from lake tahoe to spend one last afternoon at the track that she remembers as a kid. i've been coming to the track here since since 1948. >> great, great memories and i

hate to see it go, but i know it's a sign of the times. >> the general manager tells us the closure is because the company decided to consolidate efforts in southern california at santa anita park. it comes at a time when horse racing popularity is down. the amount of horses bred for racing is less than half of what it was in 1990, and the mortality rate of horses in california has spiked outside today. animal rights activists held a funeral procession for the horses who died here. now to the pride month celebrations across the state and across the bay area as abc seven celebrates pride all year long, the oakland lgbtq cultural center held its first ever rainbow fair today by lake merritt. the event was free and family friendly, connecting the community to resources and friends. people came to eat, dance, and learn about the center's services. >> many people used to defer to san francisco to go for

san jose. right now it's at 60, but san francisco is at 53. oakland 56 degrees, and half moon bay. also one of the cooler spots at 54. but then check out these clear skies over san jose right now. and in the north bay, we're seeing some of cooler numbers in petaluma at 52 degrees. fairfield and concord in the upper 50s. a live shot from mount ham shows the clouds starting to creep in all across the bay from the coast. and here's what you need to know. so tonight we'll be dealing with some low clouds and fog. we could even have a little bit of patchy drizzle along the peninsula coast tomorrow morning to tomorrow. it's going to really warm up. plenty of sunshine for everybody except at the beaches. and then a heat advisory kicks in tuesday. and this is when numbers could hit triple digits in some inland areas. so we have the clouds filling in. in fact tomorrow morning when you wake up or early in the morning is a good time to open up the windows to let the cool air in, because temperatures will generally be in the low to mid 50s. san

francisco 52, oakland 53, san jose 55. and you'll want to let the cooler air in because look at how warm it is going to be. san francisco will hit 70 tomorrow under plenty of sunshine. oakland 75, san jose 86. and then check out the 90s there. back in the forecast. concord livermore and santa rosa all at 90 degrees. fairfield. even a little bit warmer. we're going to jump ahead to tuesday. and this is when it gets really hot for the inland areas like fairfield, antioch, 98, also cloverdale, even at the beaches it will be quite warm. san francisco 73, san jose will be 90 on tuesday. wednesday we hang to on the heat, but it does start to cool down. thursday will be significantly cooler as the sea breeze kicks in, and we could even wake up to very overcast conditions on thursday. so here's the accuweather seven day forecast. we are warming up tomorrow and it's going to be really hot on tuesday. a great day to head to the beach, but there is a heat advisory in

elections. it's a risky move for macron, setting up an election where his party may lose control of the national assembly. macron says the decision to dissolve the assembly is serious but shows his confidence in democracy. it's a big step forward for an electric air taxi company out of the south bay. san jose based archer now has a critical approval from the faa. the company got the approval this past week. it is a partnership with united airlines, as it wants to eventually fly on demand air taxis from major airports, including sfo. as soon as next year, they take off and land vertically like a helicopter, minus the noisy and polluting gas motors. archer's midnight aircraft still needs another certification before they can start carrying paying customers. happening tomorrow a film exploring the impact of racism gets its second debut. origin is heading to hulu. months after it

look ahead to the nba draft. no rest for the coaching staff. head coach steve kerr will be in charge of the u.s. national team for the olympics in paris. other staff members also going around the globe to help teach. warriors assistant coach ron adams joins us tonight on after the game. he sounded like a proud dad bragging about his kids and all of their accomplishments. >> steve. of course, everyone knows, will be coaching the olympic olympics this summer and we're really excited for him. and it's going to be a real fun thing. it's pressure packed, not a simple job to be the head national coach of our men's

basketball. but steve will do a terrific job. he's got a great staff and, you know, it's really going to be a great thing to watch. >> i know you're going to mention other coaches, but i just want to jump in here real quick because it used to be that job, was basically an automatic gold medal. not so much anymore. with how the rest of the world is caught up, it's tougher and more stress, way more stressful. it's tougher. >> and then kenny is assisting on the french national team. >> kenny atkinson. >> yeah, and i'm a little envious because he's going to have a big, tall guy that maybe he can stick in front of the rim and wemby and, have fun with, so, you know, i'm happy for him. i'm envious of him, too, because that's a fun job to do this summer. and then, chris dimarco, many people may not realize coaches, the national team of the bahamas and they can still qualify for the olympics. they have qualifying tournaments in europe, but they're if they win, they'll be in the olympics. and they did a terrific thing last

summer. they beat argentina twice in their zone. argentina was the fourth ranked fiba team in the world. they beat them twice to advance to the to these qualifying rounds in europe to make it to the olympics. so i'm so proud of those three guys that they're involved in international basketball. kenny played a long time in france and speaks french and, and then the other guys, i'm excited for all of them. so it's going to be a really good summer for our coaches and international basketball. >> so the bahamas is your neck of the woods. could i get like an assistant's job on demarco's staff like i'll just hang out by the beach. >> let's go, let's go, let's do it. that's where he's looking. >> he's he always looks for help. he's looking. if you would say you wanted to help, he would, he would. he would take you long. >> i know he would. >> is there any salary? >> no. well no. >> that's that's that's basically the same deal i have with the donald, like, in fact, you may have to pay for your flight to go to the camp. >> oh, boy.
