marking the 80th anniversary of d-day and a state visit to paris. >> today, donald trump virtually attends a probation interview stemming from his felony conviction in new york. that comes a day after his return to the campaign trail. abc's rachel scott with the details. >> it's not too hot out here right now. >> donald trump's first major rally since a jury of his peers convicted him on 34 counts of falsifying business records, a disgrace. the former president once again bashing the indictments that have upended his campaign. >> i got indicted again and again and again. i was never indicted in a period of this little tiny period of time, i was like a i was like a ping pong ball. >> trump, still facing three other criminal indictments, escalating his attacks on prosecutors, using profanity to lash out at special counsel. >> jack smith is a deranged, dumb guy. he's a dumb. >> trump supporters in line waiting hours in scorching las vegas heat as high as 99 degrees, some wearing shirts bluntly reading, quote, i'm voting for the convicted felon has the conviction harden your support for trump? oh yeah, the

former president also lambasting president biden's recent immigration executive action that strictly limits the asylum process. the border now temporarily closed to migrants crossing illegally. >> it's weak. it's ineffective. >> trump even mocking biden, reading a teleprompter. >> oh, oh, he wouldn't even say anything because he's incapable, five months out from the election, some nevada voters tell us they aren't sold on either candidate. >> it's kind of like a two way risk assessment. who's going to damage our democracy and our way of life. worse and who's damage is going to be harder to clean up? >> the former president departing las vegas, heading back to his mar a lago estate in florida, where he will sit for a pre-sentencing interview. sources do tell us that he will attend that interview virtually alongside of his lead attorney, todd blanch. rachel scott, abc news, las vegas. >> rachel, thank you. we should learn today if the president's son, hunter biden, will testify in his own defense at his federal gun trial if biden does not testify, prosecutors and his defense attorney will move to

closing arguments. hunter biden is accused of lying when he swore that he was not a drug user on a federal form to buy a gun in 2018. he's pleaded not guilty. >> russian warships are expected to arrive in cuba this week, but the pentagon says it's not concerned or even surprised a u.s. state. a u.s. statement says the deployment is part of russia's routine naval activity. cuba says none of the arriving ships will carry nuclear weapons. the pentagon says the planned naval exercises are part of russia's wider response to us for supporting ukraine. >> police in madison, wisconsin, are set to provide an update in a few hours on sunday morning's mass shooting on an apartment rooftop, nine people ranging in age from 14 to 23, were shot or grazed by gunfire. no arrests have been made so far. the city's police chief says it's a miracle no one was killed. investigators do not believe it was a random shooting. >> authorities patrolling the waters of the gulf coast this weekend were on the alert after shark bites sent three different people to the hospital. we're learning more about one of the

incidents which shattered what started as a mother daughter weekend. oh my gosh, look at that harrowing new details after three people were injured in shark attacks along florida's panhandle, a teenager lost her hand and leg to what officials say was likely an eight foot bull shark. her mother describes the teen losing two thirds of the blood in her body and undergoing several surgeries, saying when her daughter awoke, her first words to us were, i made it. another teen was also injured in that attack with wounds to her foot, and 90 minutes earlier, about four miles away, a woman suffered significant trauma, leading to the amputation of her arm, prompting questions about why officials didn't close the beaches. >> then we didn't see fit at the moment to close down the entire beach while we ground troops and figure out what was really going on farther down the gulf coast, this drone footage posted by sea through canoes, shows hammerhead sharks alongside beachgoers in saint petersburg. >> elsewhere, a man bitten by a shark north of san diego last sunday required surgery, and on friday, a woman bitten off oahu

in hawaii was left in serious condition. if it seems shark attacks are happening more often, experts say protections established decades ago are helping populations rebound and feeding habits are bringing them to beaches. >> warming water temperatures might influence the distribution of some of these species, but as far as they're coming close to shore, that's where they tend to feed some beaches are now using drones and other technology to track sharks and predict their behavior. >> experts say the probability of an attack is still extremely low. >> well, now some weather. the forecast in west texas who posted this video welcome the rain as it fell in temperatures close to 100 degrees. they'll get another chance to welcome more rain and even thunderstorms today. more storms are expected today in the northern plains. damaging winds, hail and a few possible tornadoes. and there's more triple digit heat this week from northern california to the southwest. phoenix reaching 113 degrees by wednesday. >> in north dakota, there's a lot of buzz about an amazing

discovery a father, his son and the boy's cousins are talking about their prehistoric find. >> here's abc's whit johnson. >> the chunky saurus is a dinosaur that you do not know what it is. >> an unlikely prehistoric discovery. >> kaden madsen, along with his cousins liam and jason fisher, were out for a hike when they came across something unusual sticking out of the ground. the three boys stumbled upon these fossilized remains of a tyrannosaurus rex while wandering across the north dakota badlands in the summer of 2022. their story, the subject of the documentary film t-rex, highlighting their rare discovery. >> they both came running up and jason had seen it and said, that's a fossil paleontologist tyler leeson returned with the boys, and a group of scientists to excavate the fossil, but it took another year to finally get the necessary permission to extract it. >> these young cousins, taking an active role in the excavation

tonight on abc. >> a hailstorm battered an austrian airlines jet, breaking off the plane's nose and damaging its cockpit windows. authorities say the aircraft hit a thunderstorm cell while approaching vienna's airport sunday. the airline says it couldn't be seen on the jet's radar. the crew issued a mayday call before the plane landed safely. no one was hurt. >> police in rome are searching for the crooks who broke into a jewelry store. authorities say they broke into the shop by

digging a hole in the floor from a neighboring house. the burglars got away with about $540,000 worth of merchandise. police are examining surveillance cameras in the area. >> well, a much less sophisticated theft has prompted a search for a brazen thief in columbus, ohio. the porch pirate making off with a delivery just seconds after it arrived. law enforcement is attempting to crack down on the thieves. abc's alex presha reports. >> brash and brazen, this latest wave of package thefts has baffled some homeowners by just how bold these porch pirates are. this past week in columbus, ohio, a fedex driver had just arrived with a delivery. oh, when this thief ran up from behind and grabbed the package, leaving the fedex worker standing there stunned. that thief getting away with a brand new apple watch, i was shocked. >> i mean, i thought maybe it was a joke at first, kyle dorsch, who was home at the time, says the thief wasn't deterred in the slightest by the

presence of the fedex worker or his doorbell camera. i just feel bad. it's a lot of people, including ourselves. you work hard to get the things we have and for them just to be taken near. >> philadelphia, police are looking for porch pirates dressed as amazon delivery drivers. anger >> yes, because they wanted a gift for my wife. >> the area dealing with a number of thieves pretending to be amazon employees. the retail giant telling abc news in this statement we encourage anyone who's been a victim of package theft to report it to the police and will work with law enforcement to help as much as possible. the average price of a stolen package is just over $80. nearly half of these thefts are from single unit homes. 22% of theft victims had a doorbell camera and a quarter say they never received a refund. florida is using the law to discourage thieves. it's now a third degree felony there to steal anything from a home worth more than $40. >> we will raise penalties on people that steal packages from your front porch. >> now, some retailers are offering delivery services that

give drivers partial access to your home, your garage, even the trunk of your car. but what if you're worried about your packages being secure? most also allow you to pick them up from a secure locker or a location, just in case. alex presha abc news, columbus, ohio some good advice there from alex. >> alex. thank you. i've had packages stolen left and right, so infuriating. i prefer the pickup option. the locker. >> personally, that's safest option for sure. yeah. all right a florida family is celebrating an academic feat that may be the first of its kind. mike and tracy, dina's youngest daughter, was named valedictorian of astronaut high school. this year. that means all four rendina daughters finished at the top of their respective classes. mom is a teacher at astronaut high, and she credits her daughter's strong work ethic. >> congratulations to them overachievers and the best possible way you know, it's got to be some competition to the family that drives that, right? >> yeah. of course.

to make sure you do. it was last night in the third quarter against the mavericks. payton pritchard, who did not make a three in game one, basically goes from half court and banks one in which really gave the seeds the momentum. andrew was that luck or was he going for the bank? >> i don't know, but dallas could have cut that lead to three in the final minute, except boston's derrick white making the defensive play of the game, maybe even the series. we'll see how it all plays out. no foul. called on that block at the rim. it was all clean, and the celtics held on to win 105 to 98. game three is wednesday. here on abc in dallas. >> exciting stuff. and next caitlin clark says she's not disappointed about not being chosen for team usa at this summer's olympics in paris. >> social media disagrees. a lot of people were upset. you know, she's one of the most famous athletes in america, right now, and they want to see her in the stars and stripes. but she said that being left off the american roster gives her something to shoot for the next time. the olympics are around in 2028, which happens to be in los angeles as for those on the team, clarke said she's excited

for them and that she'll be rooting for the team to obviously win that gold medal. >> there were some rumors circulating that maybe she wasn't picked because she's not going to play a lot, even if she was on the team because she's so young, right? and attacked that maybe her fan base would have been a little upset if she wasn't playing. so that's out there right now. interesting. >> four years from now, she can wait just a little while. well, tonight in south florida, it's game two of the stanley cup for andrews. florida panthers. >> the panthers are trying to take a two game lead on edmonton after shutting out the oilers three nothing saturday night. it was the first game one shutout since 2011 when vancouver did it to boston. the bruins, though, went on to win that series at seven games. you can watch game two right here on abc. >> bobrovsky the playoffs. tell the people who he is. he's the goalie that got us shut out. >> that is right. he is a brick wall and the panthers look so good. they deserve this, right, danny? the panthers aren't. they haven't won ever in their existence.
