rhiannon. we begin with the crisis on the southern border and a new challenge for the white house. >> they're running into problems imposing president biden's new policy, which limits asylum seekers. former president trump back on the campaign trail, wasting no time attacking biden on the issue. >> in the meantime, today, trump is meeting with a probation officer following the guilty verdict at his criminal trial. abc's em nguyen has details beginning with the problems at the border. and. good morning, andrea. good morning. president biden tried to address a major concern for voters, the crisis on the border. but some nationalities are now escaping the president's new asylum ban. this morning, the biden administration's new border policy appears to be hitting a major logistical hurdles. the policy, which took effect last week, suspends asylum processing due to the surge of migrants at the southern border. those arrested between the points of entry are supposed to be deported immediately. >> we are allowed individuals to access asylum through the ports

of entry pursuant to a program that we developed, but the associated press reports some of those newly apprehended migrants have not been deported due to a scarcity of deportation flights to certain countries. >> many of the migrants arrested in the first days of the new policy were from china, and india. one group included men from mauritania, sudan and ethiopia. homeland security officials have said there is a limitation to the resources needed to deport some people, including other governments, not being cooperative. but there's encouraging news for the white house border officials say the number of migrants apprehended dropped 20% after the policy went into effect, a sign it may be deterring some illegal immigration. >> it's not too hot out here, right? you know, it's not bad, former president trump in las vegas yesterday blamed the border crisis on biden's policies. the people of nevada have had a front row seat to joe

centrist partner could affect broader support for his far right government. israeli protesters were back in the streets this weekend demanding the government do more to rescue the estimated 80 living hostages still held in gaza. do you believe that the prime minister will bring will bring the rest of the hostages home? >> he that is not interested in what's happening to the hostages , he's only interested in his political future. >> israel is defending its hostage rescue mission in gaza saturday. images from the raid taken by the israeli military show soldiers moving in by helicopter, then racing the hostages, including one woman and three men, to safety. the hamas run gaza health ministry claims at least 274 palestinians were killed in that raid, including dozens of children. israel insists there were fewer than 100 civilians killed, and

blames hamas for using civilians as shields. >> the forces came under fire from 360 degree threat. the tragedy of civilians being caught up in this is precisely because of how hamas is battling us on the battleground. our responsibility, our first and foremost responsibility, is to rescue the hostages. >> the white house acknowledges innocent people were tragically killed in that raid, and says it has urged israel to minimize civilian casualties. us secretary of state antony blinken is back in the middle east today, pushing a cease fire plan with no buy in yet from hamas. andrew andrea. >> alison. thank you. back in this country, new video of a landslide that wiped out a crucial state highway in wyoming . the road connects wyoming and idaho through the teton pass. many people who work at yellowstone use that highway to commute to work. now, their commute will be about 60 miles longer. the landslide stretches

for about 250ft. the cause is still being determined, melting snow could be one factor. it could take weeks or even months to rebuild the road we're learning more about. >> back to back shark attacks off florida. three people suffering bites in the wake of two other shark attacks elsewhere. and summer hasn't even officially started yet. oh my gosh, look at that harrowing new details after three people were injured in shark attacks along florida's panhandle, a teenager lost her hand and leg to what officials say was likely an eight foot bull shark. her mother describes the teen losing two thirds of the blood in her body and undergoing several surgeries, saying when her daughter awoke, her first words to us were, i made it. another teen was also injured in that attack with wounds to her foot, and 90 minutes earlier, about four miles away, a woman suffered significant trauma, leading to the amputation of her arm, prompting questions about why officials didn't close the beaches. then we didn't see fit at the moment to close down the entire beach while we ground troops and figure out what was

really going on farther down the gulf coast. this drone footage posted by see through canoes shows hammerhead sharks alongside beachgoers in saint petersburg. elsewhere, a man bitten by a shark north of san diego last sunday required surgery, and on friday, a woman bitten off oahu in hawaii was left in serious condition. if it seems shark attacks are happening more often, experts say protections established decades ago are helping populations rebound and feeding habits are bringing them to beaches, warming water temperatures might influence the distribution of some of these species, but as far as they're coming close to shore, that's where they tend to feed. some beaches are now using drones and other technology to track sharks and predict their behavior. experts say the probability of an attack is still extremely low . >> a hail storm is blamed for causing this damage to an austrian airlines plane. the flight landed safely in vienna without its nose cone, and with the cockpit windows shattered, the pilots say the storm was not visible on radar. passengers reported about two minutes of
